David, that antenna really needs a counterpoise (like a vehicle body) or radials. Efficiency will be very poor without it. Im sure it's enough for low speed digital modes while propagation is good but you would struggle to make a connection with another station with voice (Phone SSB) mode. For the existing setup, like in this video, make sure to bond the coax's shield (at the antenna connector) to the tripod. Also make sure all the major parts in the tripod are interconnected electrically. For a vehicle, I strongly recommend to use a Tarheel, screwdriver type vertical antenna. They work very well and require no tuner on all bands the antenna model s designed for. Changing bands takes just seconds without any external controllers.

Dave, on learning CW, here are a few tips from an old Ham, a “code Extra”. DO NOT memorize the characters. If you do, you will fail or never do more than about 5 WPM. Learn the sound. Use the Farnsworth method to learn the code. In other words, learn the sound of the code at a higher speed with a longer space between characters. I suggest sending them at 18 WPM with a 5 WPM spacing. This way you learn the sound and it is easier to increase your speed by decrease the spacing as you learn the code. Also an option for getting antennas up high are telescopic carbon fibre "flag poles" or fishing poles, these are pretty affordable and a 6m tall pole takes up very little space in a vehicle when folded.

I saw your bug out video a few days back and got a baofeng. Trying to learn how to use it. Super cool stuff that I'd never have gotten into otherwise, but communications is important when things go sideways from normal and for a few bucks it is a good thing to have. I plan to get to my local group when I'm off work early one night

I like the concept and would love to have one just like it, but at 80 yrs old, there is no way that I am going to go through the process of getting a ham licence, even though during my whole life I have worked in the communications industry. So pie in the sky for me. I already have the MS Surface pro with 1T storage, but that doesn't need a licence.
It would be time consuming but a video on how to use a bf-f9, like basics for a bugout or for if we had a huge storm where things are down for weeks or more, would be super helpful. I tried finding videos on basics and the content is difficult to sort through and they don't make instructional videos as good as you do
Robert, not sure Dave has that Radio to cover a video. In the end, the concept is always the same. Radio, antenna and power source. For that Radio, you won't need most of what Dave covers here. I have no experience with that Radio, but I am pretty sure any Baofeng programming video will get you started. The ones I have or have used are nearly identical. For basics of Ham radio.. I'd suggest checking out Ham Radio Crash Course to get started. May need to dig thru his voluminous content but Josh has a lot of great info for beginners, new vids and old. Don't be stuck on everything having to being about your radio. Take the greater concepts and mold your own comm plan. If you need to bug put or deal with the aftermath of a storm, you may have a chance to use other radios you will be happy you can figure things out. Just my thoughts. Best of luck. 73
In a emergency comm situation, a 20m is going to give you intel from far away. If you want to make regional contacts for support/supplies/etc wouldn't it be best to do a 40 or 80 meter setup? or NVIS?
Silly question maybe, but when I see "CQ POTA" is that a general CQ or are you looking for POTA members only? I've just gotten back on FT8 after 2 years away and I'm seeing quite a few POTA calls on the air. Also, there's a screen shot in this video that shows a map of stations. I prefer the Yaesu FT5DR over the Icom ID-52 namely because it will do what the 52 won't - TRUE WIDEBAND RECEIVE. I have both an ID-51 (VHF/UHF) and ID-31 (UHF) and like both of them however with the FT5DR from Yaesu I can transmit not only on the VHF/UHF ham bands but after a quick mod I can tranmist on FRS/GMRS/MURS/Itinerant Business/Marine/Air Band freqs in an emergency as well as receive FM & shortwave with a wire antenna clipped onto a ring terminal screwed down on the antenna connector. The ID-52 doesn't do APRS either whereas the FT5DR does. The quick-release belt holster clip for the FT5DR is also better than the ID-52. The ID-52 only picks up 88Mhz-174Mhz and 225Mhz-479Mhz yet Icom calls that a "wideband receiver". It's really not. The FT5DR receives from .5Mhz to 999.99Mhz. *That* is a true wideband receiver. That said, the ID-51 & ID-31 I have have been relegated for emergency use with digital voice with each other. And a Baofeng UV-5R just to have sitting out in view to anger the old, sad hams out there and to hand off to another operator who might have broken theirs during a special event I might be working.

I remember when you first explained the idea I thought it made a lot of sense, but almost the next day I saw HRCC answer a chat question about how effective they were with the idea that the body of the person holding the HT is already acting as a counterpoise, so adding a second shouldn't do much. Have you seen any appreciable change from it?
I haven't seen and commercial electronics that will take an EMP hit. Unless you store the electronics in some kind of Faraday cage or Faraday shield we're SOL.
My communication skills are pretty much limited to making puffs of smoke from a campfire. Morse code, I guess. Not putting this down, just making a comment of some kind because as I hear it helps. Keep on keeping on.
I think preppers should consider acquiring a crystal radio which requires no batteries to always have access to AM radio. They can weigh next to nothing (apart from antenna and ground) and cost just a few bucks to make. What do you think Dave?

That’s not exactly cheap, but it seems like many adventurous passtimes/hobbies you need to be in a rich and free country with a good job or just be rich to take part. It’s like TH-cam is the show n tell playground of the rich these days.

Don't drill your speaker stand, dave. Use small U bolts. Get the from home depot or Lowe's...or better yet, Ace hardware.

Without the counterpoise wire, the outside of the coax shield will radiate and that can cause distortion on the transmitted signal !

The mail is a PL-259 and the female is a SO-239.
G90 is a great budget option around 4-500$. Has a great tuner, no built in battery tho. Wide band receive also. I receive CB frequencies also on it.

I use the CP for 2m on my 705 when you not holding it. But the body works as a CP only if you are holding the radio correctly to my understanding

Not very. Unless they are in a Faraday cage then they should be fine. Just keep an extra baogang and in a cage and you will be golden.
I've heard that unless you are on the power grid at the time of the emp, then your gear should be fine. Not sure how true that is though.
