I could see all kinds of problems with it. Like the components randomly falling out, structural issues that make the phone bend, people trying to use 3rd party batteries and the phone explodes, etc. Letting the consumers mess around with the hardware is never really a good idea either.

And I remember when I was about take a trip to Manila for a birthday trip, I saw some note from Cebu Pacific warning everyone who owns the Note 7
It still is banned and was even outright discontinued, because the overheating proved to be unfixable.

Project Ara is a solid idea that could come back once again.
Tony Tarantula , no it isn’t a solid idea, it is one big heap of wishful thinking. Reality doesn’t work like that. There simply is no benefit to the idea at all. Even environmental benefits do not exist as it simply takes a lot more resources/packaging to build individual components as opposed to an integrated phone.
Build it as a good, up to date chassis, offer it with several stock variations with an entry, mid-range and flagship spec set up at corresponding price points. Consumers buy what they want, of course certain features like expandable memory, 3.5mm jack, bluetooth, nfc, Wifi etc should be integrated but camera modules, further memory, batteries, maybe even charger connectors could be made to plug in and play. We're on USB-c now but what if you could simply switch a module and upgrade to whatever the future is? Definitely a viable idea, just needs some thought.

Except it would just fail again. People aren't smart enough to realize this would save them money and hassle. Plus, people are really dumb and want a shiny new design every 2 years not a truck that will ably do the work but not look all new and shiny as you put various things in it. I agree. The purpose of a wristwatch is to tell u time. That basic & simple purpose allows people to want adding "accessories" to it to make it not "basic" object (make it fancier). Meanwhile, the purpose of smartphone is complex, varies and very up-to-date...so adding "accessories" seems meaningless if the purpose isn't updated as well

I have some fancy pocket watches, that would have been considered luxury at the time, that are going on a century-old now.....
Vertu, really did made a lot of more sense, back in the days, where they were no smartphones and the lifespan of a phone was a lot longer. I knew some rich people with Vertu phones back then and everybody loved it, it was seen as a jewelry, as fashion accessory in a world where the appearance of the phone was the main diversity factor of them, it stood out. But in the modern world, where the smartphone is basically a consumable you change every year or so, due to the fast development of software/hardware, device like that is bound to fail.

I remember Project Ara from before it was in Google’s hands and was known simply as “Phonebloks”. Google bought the idea out (though I think Motorola had it between then) but eventually scrapped it. I remember being disappointed because at the time I was quite taken with the idea.
I still really liked the idea of a modular phone.
It's honestly not, from so many points of view. I'm surprised it went past the idea stage.

I was flying around this time. I remember a warning before the plane took off that the note 7 was not allowed because it could catch fire. Also that turning the phone off wasn’t enough and it could still catch fire.

They had a camera AI that would search items just by taking pictures of them. And I think the other gimmick was a 3D display which was just a glorified live wallpaper. It was an absolute joke of a phone

Project ara looks really cool and practical. Am an android user. I prefer battery and performance. Camera is the least of my priority. However these days, its like i must buy the whole package
It's just that modular phones are inefficient with space and cost, the battery is never going to be good on any phone designed like that as the battery needs to slot into those sections being less efficient in space and also the battery would have to also have a protective wall on it taking up even more space or making the battery even smaller and by the time you've bought all the parts your phones going to be more expensive than most mid tier high performance phones anyway.

I had a Blackberry Storm and I loved it. While the Storm had its' issues, it was still futuristic compared to the feature phones before it. Also, what you don't realize is that at that time the iPhone was an AT&T exclusive. If you happened to live in an area that was lacking AT&T coverage, the iPhone was a no-go.

With the galaxy fold, we gotta keep in mind that Samsung actually listened to the feedback and fixed a lot of the problems before the final release, something that other phone companies probably wouldn't do. It's an ambitious phone so of course it's gonna have some problems, bottom line is they fixed it.

Problem solved: Want a luxurious design on a phone? Make your business sell luxurious cases.
This has been partially been dabbled on by few franchises for merchandise (though in the $80-100 market). One example that comes to mind are the Death Stranding bumper cases. owo

I'm not saying this to be funny I genuinely mean it on how this is just bottom barrel embarrassment at comedy. You've single handedly killed humor and every comedic act on the planet. I'm so disappointed that society has failed as a whole in being able to teach you how to be funny. Honestly if I put in all my power and time to try and make your joke funny it would require Einstein himself to build a device to strap me into so I can be connected to the energy of a billion stars to do it, and even then all that joke would get from people is a subtle scuff. You're lucky I still have the slightest of empathy for you after telling that joke otherwise I would have committed every war crime in the book just to prevent you from attempting any humor ever again. We should put that joke in text books so future generations can be wary of becoming such an absolute comedic failure. Im disappointed, hurt, and outright offended that my precious time has been wasted in my brain understanding that joke. In the time that took I was planning on helping kids who have been orphaned, but because of that you've waisted my time explaining the obscene integrity of your terrible attempt at comedy. Now those kids are suffering without meals and there's nobody to blame but you. I hope you're happy with what you have done and I truly hope you can move on and learn from this piss poor attempt.

When project ARA was announced i really was hyped and then it goes down the drain....my expectations crush and I'm still bitter till this day.
If they had been smart and used metal clips rather than magnets, I think it would have succeeded, also a rubber case to make sure that nothing pops out when you drop it. It was a interesting idea but it tried to be way too "futusistic designer", rather than a brick of pure utility, seriously magnets were all that held the tiles in.
Every phone I have bought has always been pure utility, got my headphone jack, no notch, no cut off corners. Utility will win over fashion eventually... Even if it isn't nearly a profitable as shoving a new $1,500 fashion accessory in front of people's faces every year.
I remember that Ara phone and wanting it. That and the Moto Atrix 4G. The idea of either a modular phone or a laptop-phone; omg. So cool.
About bending, the latest iPad Pro just breaks if you try to bend it. I have a previous gen iPad Pro and it is pretty bent and still has an intact screen and it works well.
When you buy a phone with 40gb of storage and a week after it there's a software update that take 30gb. 🤭
