“There’s Nothing in This Apart From Fresh Produce” | Dragons’ Den

- With Andrew Watmuff's business partner Michael Beckett absent from the Den, Watmuff told the story of how the two founders had met at secondary school and had “a passion for food from an early age”. Fast forward 20 years and their food range could be found in Boots, Selfridges, Ocado, and Asda.
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

Sarah's excuse is too funny when you think about it. Literally would take a day sitting down with a designer to change, and then just make sure the new labels are on the next batch of shipments.

Nice guys selling great food that’s fresh ! Perfect !
Feel like using the packaging as an excuse to go out is a weak reason
I agree, like if the product is so great then help the guy rebrand it 🤔
This is a great comment, so to answer this, I think one of the things we have to keep in mind is that it's very easy to look at this like a judging competition. Someone does a good pitch, or has a good product, and we don't understand why they don't get an investment. We think they did great and when the dragons give a reason for not investing, we scrutinize that reason, as we should.
I think it's easy to look at this show from the Entrepreneur's point of view. We can say: "The entrepreneur nailed it, and as such, they deserve an investment."
Meanwhile, from the dragon's point of view, a very real reason for why they may not invest is just that it doesn't 'feel' right. That is to say, they can think someone else would do better. They can also think their capital is better spent on another business that gives them a better return. The reason we don't hear this deal often (though Kevin O'leary is very honest about it) is that it doesn't seem fair to the entrepreneur.
Let's take this guy for instance. He's got a decent business with fairly nice numbers. However it's nothing mind boggling. I may look at this pitch and think: "This entrepreneur does deserve investment, but... I'm not the one to do it.". I may feel like my capital can get me a better return on another pitch. I may feel like I can make 20% or 10% from investing in this guy, putting in some time and work with him, or... do I have a better chance of another pitch being something that's right in my wheelhouse. Do I feel like there's a better chance to come across a deal that will give me 30% or 40% or numbers that are twice as good as this guy's. Do I feel like a better opportunity will surface that I can feel more excited by?
If I feel that way... this guy will not get an investment simply because I'm not as excited about his idea as another. It also means I will not give him money because I want that money on hand to use if I find something else I like.
This is very unfair to this guy because he may hit it out of the park. He may do the best he can, and still not get a deal simply because I can think someone else will do better than him, or someone else will pitch a business that I'm more excited by. Someone else may give me more return for my money if I put it in with them instead of him. So this is why a lot of entrepreneurs can get squeezed for bigger percentage gains. It's not just what's 'fair' to them. It's the fact that I can leverage my money to give someone else the chance.
If I wanted to be very ruthless as a dragon, I could say: "I'll invest in you, and I'll take 30%." And if the entrepreneur finds that unreasonable or unfair and doesn't want to do it, asking why they should... I can respond with: "Because if you don't take the offer, I'll intentionally enter the market and compete with you. I'll squeeze your margins, I'll use my contacts in the industry to edge you out and put you out of business. Its a contact sport and now that you have my attention, you'll either take my deal, or I'll crush you." - This sounds like bullying and very unfair to the entrepreneur, but it's a reason a dragon could put a high price on their involvement. It is simply a play of: "You are paying me to support you, and not oppose you. That's why you'll give me what I want." etc.
So all in all... when you see a business where the dragons seem to have a silly reason not to invest, it might help us to look at it from the other side. The dragon may feel like the prize of this investment is not worth it compared to the chance of something else. If this guy was making millions in net profit, and came to the dragons to get them involved, they might make him an offer even if the idea didn't excite them too much simply because it's a great chance to partake in that net profit. They don't have to put in much work and they can leverage their connections and image, etc. What's more, other ideas are not likely to be this good by the numbers. So passing up this deal is harder for them to do. If the deal is a 130,000 net profit business with a bit more risk, they may feel their odds of finding a better business justify not using the money on this one, etc.
We can always think the dragons have a bottomless pit of money. I watch pitch after pitch and there could be a tonne I love. But it's unrealistic for me to think the dragons will give money to all these 'deserving' ideas. Kevin O'Leary is quoted as saying in one of the pitches: "You can take my money and my offer, or you can walk out that door. But if you walk out that door, you're dead to me. The next guy can come in, he'll get my money, he'll be incredibly successful, but not you." - And this is very harsh, but it's the mindset of why dragons can treat deals like something for them to manipulate to their liking. If you agree to the terms, you can get their backing, if you don't, they don't 'need' you. They are reasonably capable of assessing that someone else can get investment from them and make them a better return than you could. Of course there could also be a case where you hit it out of the park and they regret turning you down, or other ideas just frustrate them and they don't hear one that they liked as much as yours, then they missed out. But that often depends on how good your deal is relatively. Very high profit businesses often get offers from the dragons, even if the entrepreneur turns it down or is looking more for exposure.
So that's pretty much it hehe. Dragons may turn down a 'decent business' because they're looking for a good business. Dragons can turn down a good business because they're looking to hawk a 'great' business'. And sometimes dragons will invest in a 'decent' business to 'take a punt' (if you've heard this term used to justify their good deal by the numbers) if they feel like it on a given day hehe.
Yup, it's easy to modify the packaging, and it can be done in subtle stages if the brand is already on the shelves and selling.

I think the brand logo is okey, the name is as well, I like it. And 2.30£ for one is not bad either.
Not sure why they all seemed to go out based on the branding which could have been easily changed? "Yeah, I'll give you the money but we have to do something about the branding" ... no?
It can be expensive to rebrand. Yes they are millionaire investors but the cost can put them off. Since they are stocked in asda I can imagine they have already manufactured a lot of packaging and labels in advance. Plus the manufacturer would have to change the stamp they use for labels which costs money as well as stop production in order to swap out the old with new, which can cause delays in orders if its not done smoothly, etc. Its probably the hassle as well. Since the food market is so competitive it just comes down to; do you want to invest in a company that needs more work or invest in a company thats perfect and good to go.
I think Zen said it right. It's a lot of hassle to rebrand.
As an investor, you're looking at reasons not to invest. And these 2 guys are likely to very attached to the brand name, like Deborah said.
Maybe because it was so personal to him, they thought it would be pointless or rude to force him change it? 🤷♀️
I've seen Dragons agree to a deal only if the entrepreneur agrees to change the branding, but maybe that's what happens on DD Canada or Shark Tank.

Watmuf & Becket should make wheat muffins and biscuits
Their reasons for going out don't make sense. They could easily rebrand the product and change the name because no one knows about it yet.
It's because to rebrand you'll basically be starting from the beginning. Most if not all of your customers won't know you've rebranded when you've changed the packaging AND the name.
They are already in 4 supermarkets, 3 of which are prestigious ones. Changing away from their current posh looking branding could put those deals at risk.
I don't get why rebranding is so "easy", or why they should be forced to rebrand if they don't think it's necessary. They already have sales under their current name. It's a legitimate reason for declining a deal.
I think 3 of the dragons focused too much on the branding side of the business than they did on the product that was selling well and hitting the targets that a leading supermarket set for them. Good on Nick Jenkins though for having the courage to invest in them.
Either they edited some necessary stuff out or they just made up stuff to not invest. It was weird. I guess first to back out has competing investments and thats why they were out but that is a guess

Why are the dragons always so critical of the product when it's not perfect to their standard i.e. missing something on the label, the branding isn't the flashiest etc.
A dragon working with the investor can recommend a graphic design update, get their team to come up with concepts and put the new and improved version back into market. What's pretentious of the dragons is they always want the product itself to be ready-to-go from day zero. So many supermarket brands change up their graphic design and introduce it as a flashy new product on a near 1-2 year basis. Just look at the likes of Pringles, Coca-Cola etc. to name a couple obvious big ones. If the product ticks all other boxes, which in this case, it did, then take the investment and improve where it lacks. The other dragons seem only interested in putting minimal effort in and saying they can open doors and have contacts to put these products on the shelves, and that's it.
Nick Jenkins seems to be the most down to earth Dragon in this pitch, seeing that with just a few minor improvements the product's fine and ready to go to the marketplace. He's got a trick here for sure that the other dragons were too proud to see. Upon reading up on this the branding didn't even change and the business is still going and thriving. Kudos to Nick for not getting caught up in such a minute issue.
Deborah would invest if it came into the den today, BUT ive seen Shark Tank, the Sharks loudly declaring themselves out, and then coming back in again, its almost sweet to see the Dragons hold themselves to the format like that. This says nothing of what happens outside of the Den.
I think the dragons have no choice. It's a den's rule that if you come out you cannot come back in I'm pretty sure

I recall seeing several pitches where Dragons turn around and say: "Well I was out, but now, I may be back in." or they hear something that's changed or a piece of information is divulged that they like, and so they say: "Well I was out, but given this... yeah, okay, I'm going to make this offer."

£2.20 is actually a tiny bit expensive for the local market. It wouldn't be considered cheap. Even more so depending on how long ago this was recorded.
Good deal. Good man.
I heard if you poured a pot of Watmuff and Becket's under the bonnet, it'll really soup up your engine.

Nick is still chewing things over. LOL
Peter: "too elitist". I don't get his reasoning at times. Not everything has to appeal to mass market to become a successful brand. If that were so, supermarkets would consist of products which were all the same and all have the same price point. Take ice cream. Own brand tub £1.00, luxoury brands £4.00+ . Both sell, otherwise they wouldnt have space on the shelves and I can think of a few "luxoury brand" ice cream companies with very healthy profits Peter wouldnt sneeze at, but going by his logic here, he would've turned them down.
