    Acoustically the fiddle seems to be one of the only instruments that is totally polarized between joy and sadness...it seems to me that you can't get hate out of a fiddle. .

    • @joyoffiddling
      @joyoffiddling  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Very thoughtful observation, Jason. I would not be qualified to comment on all the countless different instruments in the world, but as far as the fiddle is concerned, self expression with this particular instrument really does run the gamut of complex human emotion with the possible exception of hate, as you mentioned. There can certainly be anger in the way a fiddle tune is played...some of the great legends of fiddling were well known to have been pretty cantankerous folks. For me personally, some tunes themselves have personalities inherent in them and they demand to be played a certain way. I have a long list of favorite tunes and high on that list are "Choctaw" and "Cattle in the Cane". Both tunes speak to me on a visceral level. There is a "darkness" to them for me. Not in an "evil" sense, but in profundity and gravitas. Both are deeply soulful and emotionally complex compositions and perhaps this is why they can be expressed so well on a soulful and complex instrument like the fiddle.

      Hey Derek. Sincerely sorry to hear of your T.A., but very gratified to know that you find some comfort in this music and/or the videos on this channel. You may find it interesting that many members of the fiddle family suffer from anxiety and depression. (including folks you see in these videos, not to mention yours truly) They too find respite in the music. The Joy of Fiddling Channel is always open to you and anyone who feels like stopping by for a musical hug.

      Joy of Fiddling
      • 1 second ago
      hey there, Michael. With a few exceptions, you shouldn't have too much trouble tracking down music for most of the tunes that are on the Joy of Fiddling channel...either in books or with simple on line searches. One of the biggest "original" sources of tunes for fiddlers (who can read music) in my neck of the woods (Western and middle American states and elsewhere) has always been Cole's 1000 Fiddle Tunes (and its original incarnation Ryan's Mammoth Collection). But do understand, you will never find exact music for what you hear on this channel. The fiddlers you see here have been playing these tunes for many, many years, and their arrangements and licks are always evolving. What started out as a simple two part tune may have been built upon and added on by many fiddlers over many years until it has become a complex multi-part tune. They stay true to the original structure and melody of the tune, but "sing it" in their own voice and notation can vary a great deal. (like jazz musicians taking a song standard and making it their own) But that's one of the reasons why some fiddling is such an amazing art form. In my mind it epitomizes what musical self expression is. You can take a hundred fiddlers and have them play the same tune and each interpretation of that tune can be unique. It's a beautiful thing when a fiddler is able to be in a space where they can allow the tune to tell him or her how it wants to be played in that moment.

      Hey there, Connie. These particular members of the fiddle family reside in the Portland, Oregon area. Dougy is originally from Kentucky but he came out to look around a bit and we sort of kidnapped him. @joyoffiddling  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, bless your heart, Connie. Happy to have you stop by the Joy Fiddling channel and thank you for what you do planting seeds of the music in Curlew. None of us would describe ourselves as "bluegrass fiddlers", but we are huge fans of Kenny Baker and all of us play his tunes. Very smart of you to expose your students to jamming. It is one of the great joys in life for musicians like us. We prefer it to competing or performing. Also important for youngsters or anyone new to this music to know that there is such a thing as 'jam etiquette" and the rules and culture of that etiquette change from one style of fiddling to another, one part of the country to another, one group of musicians to another. Navigating those different dynamics can be a little tricky at first but it's definitely worth it to practice patience and keep one's eyes and ears open. Luckily the folks in these videos have been playing together for years and years and years. We all love and respect each other and are bigs fans of each other's pickin'' and fiddlin'.
