Ever see that "Pinky and the Brain" episode "Brainwashed"? Part of it involved a land of hats. Sure, it was really just a bunch of people (and lab mouse; yes, just one, as Pinky's stupidity made him immune) forcibly given amnesia and made to think they were the hats they wore, but it was still hilarious and fitting of the theme.

BOTW in Master Mode was still easy. The only "Challenge" was the Master Sword Trials, because enemies regen health (which imo was dumb).
If they took out the regen, made AI smarter, and made it so you take double damage, then it could be just a little bit harder. Otherwise, I'm still fighting Lynels at 3 hearts. So long as you can dodge and parry, you can kill anything....
There is no incentive to get hearts over stamina, because killing things faster is much more efficient than being able to *maybe* take one more hit....
In short, remove/rework the counter system to be less lenient. But hey, that's just my opinion. It definitely had it's challenge when I first started the game.

Mother 3 was pretty dark and a depressing game. Sometimes its not really "All ages" considering how dark it is. Thats the only nintendo game that is necessarily "All ages".

Mother 3 is COMPLETELY different than GTA V, if GTA is somebody's favorite game, they may not like mother 3's play style. But mother 3 is the best game ever in my opinion. I just like it's play style more than other games.

Sage of Fire There was so much traveling around that you had to do, and you had to go those shrines which didn't have much action and were very boring for me. Everybody seems to love the game, so I assume it's just that I'm into more of a constant action thing, which isnt very present in Zelda except for the few parts with a lot of combat.

Tbh the people who complain it's too easy haven't even played the game (or at least not far enough)...Some of the post game moons definitely aren't easy at all. The game forces you to learn how to make good use of cappy for some of them.
And then there is people who complain that it is too easy but they go over and play cuphead and complain it is too hard...people will just try to fuck everyone up

King Aardvark : They are talking about review bombing. People who give games 0/10 without even playing the game. Sony fans for unknown reasons are the worst for it, they have heaps of good games supposedly so why they do this is weird.

I think Mario Odyssey was meant to be easy and forgiving in order to encourage exploration.
The reason deaths only take 10 coins, the reason moons count even after death, the reason there are checkpoints everywhere.
They want you to explore every nook and cranny of the worlds. They want you try to see if you can do that crazy risky jump or see if you can go down that narrow path.
If they game reset you every time you died, exploring would be so risky and time consuming that it wouldn’t be worth it to take the jump.

Levels are big but that doesn't always mean better. They are all hit or miss. Some hit wonderful and others don't really work.

The unique content are the overused power moons scattered everywhere, speaking of which just makes the game easier and boring.
The True Mario Fan it's not an evil shitty micro transaction if you can still unlock the stuff in game without ever owning an amiibo. After saving peach you can buy (with in game coins) or collect power moons in order to unlock all the wedding costumes in game. Heck, when you first land on the moon, cappy gives the costume you get for tapping the wedding mario amiibo for free, no crazy cap shop needed. And don't say "oh it's going to take years to unlock the wedding costumes!!11 its just like darth vader in battle front: either waste 40+ hours of your life grinding for him or pay" as everyone is saying, moons are extremely easy to collect. You can also buy them in groups of ten in the shop with in game coins and I find coins quite plentiful in Super mario odyessy. Amiibo are completely optional and i feel like this would still be the way to unlock the wedding costumes in a world where amiibo were never invented at all.
I do not like mario 64. It's just a 3D version of Mario Bros and it adds no originality to the franchise. The paintings as world portals was a good idea but was executed terribly. All Mario does is run, jump and collect stars. It was too easy and the final boss had such a simple mechanic. 1/10.

why the hell do people think the challenge comes from the enemies and bosses? it's a platformer, the challenge comes from the level design, which I think this game does pretty well as far as difficulty scaling goes. There is a serious difference between cascade kingdom and bowser's kingdom. Bowser's kingdom has bottomless pits and lava and both are instakills, tons of bombs and the enemy you capture in bowser's kingdom is used well with the design of the level and with said enemy you are constantly hopping around above bottomless pits and other hazards.
If there were anything I'd complain about, I guess the levels are pretty basic? I'd love to have had a nicer variety of levels, maybe a ghost house would be a nice settings instead of having two water levels. More creative settings like cap kingdom would've been cool or maybe have had the ruined kingdom be a full level instead of just the settings for a boss fight (LOVE the visuals in that level, it clashes with mario in a good way.)
What level design? There is no part of the game that’s hard unless you bad at games
regardless of whether or not you think the game is hard, there is absolutely no arguing that bowser's kingdom is flat out more hazardous and more difficult than cascade kingdom.
It’s just that these people never played the game
The difficulty from enemies is nullified in a 3d space because you can circumvent them and they become a nonissue. The only way to make them a threat is to force the player to deal with them and that usually means halting progression, leading to a game that isn't very fun to play because your progression would be constantly halted to deal with these things that the game wants you to perceive as threatening.
That actual platforming is way, way more inviting to develop difficulty around and can lead to fun and interesting navigation while scaling the difficulty properly through the experience.
Since there are no objective truths when it comes to design philosophy I'm just going to say that both sides of this exchange are gonna show some subjectivity. That being said, I believe completely differently about what type of difficulty a 3d platformer should try to cultivate. I think making combat more complex takes away from the core experience and would just be a secondary obstacle to the average player and just come out as an annoyance. I think the margin of enemy variety you can make and have fun fights with in the 3d platformer setting is pretty small. Instead I think enemies should be placed to complement the platforming, or even have a mechanic within them that enhances/cripples your platforming ability. This game actually does this quite well with the capture mechanic and non-capturable enemies in general. The up-roots help you get to hard to reach areas and the birds in bowser kingdom (forgot their name, forgive me :C) help you navigate over large pits and tall walls. And the guys that slam the blocks down in bowser's kingdom (again, not familiar with the name) give you some platforms to work with if you choose to.
If your game is primarily a platformer, I think you should use all the tools available to enhance platforming. The same applies to combat oriented games and I think any mechanic introduced should complement the mechanics they're working with and not be two different playstyles packed into a single game. I think enemies should be tools to utilize and not one of the primary hazards you use to scale difficulty.

Also you never really picked up on the fact I was just taking the piss out of the switch, so the validity of my comment isn't necessarily something all that important. However the experience of DOOM on the Switch is vastly inferior to other consoles with a locked framerate and marred visuals that make it seem choppy in comparison to other consoles, so no, it's not astounding at all since you can play graphically intensive games on mobile phones which don't have dedicated graphics. y'all nintendrones can't take any criticism lmao.

I particularly hate the 80 on Metacritic from an official reviewer whose only criticism was "too many moons". Also I feel like there are a lot of official Metacritic reviewers who are disappointed that it isn't Galaxy 3, something it was never meant to be.

The game's difficulty was never the point of Mario Odyssey. It's more about taking in the sights and sounds of these wonderfully weird environments and sounds and using Cappy to find a creative way to collect the copious amounts of Power Moons. If you really are looking to Mario for a challenge, then you play Lost Levels or the insane amounts of Kaizo-like levels in Mario Maker.
Yeah I think the whole put-yourself-through-hell thing has a time and a place, but don't forget the fun in exploring! The shiba inus that play catch? The giant champagne glasses? THE ENDGAME WITH BOWSER?

Orion Icarus the only thing that was a challenge for me was the beach volleyball moon. Even though there was only 1 challenging moon, I have still played it for over 130 hours and have fun every time I pick up the game.

The fighting systems are radically different. Yo-kai Watch combines real time and turn based action, into an incredibly coherent fighting system. This fighting system requires a lot more strategy than Pokémon’s ever did once you start going up against the harder bosses. You have to manage your item turns, keep your healers alive, increase the amount of tribe unity bonuses on your team by rearranging the position of your Yo-kai. It just goes on and on.
The story in Yo-kai Watch is very different when compared to Pokémon’s as well. Instead of fighting for Gym Badges and bragging rights, you actually go around helping people. And, in the 2nd game, you have to travel back in time to meet your dead grandfather, and equip a new Yo-kai Watch.
Yo-kai Watch isn’t near dead. There are still active players in the community, and there are still people who watch the anime. Yo-kai Watch was never a Pokémon rip off. These games only shared the same genre. Calling Yo-kai Watch a rip off of Pokémon is like calling Super Smash Bros a rip off of Street Fighter, because they’re both fighting games.
Moral of the story: Yo-kai Watch is not a Pokémon rip off, so make sure you think before you comment.

most of these reviews looks like it came from "edgy" gamers who I believe are really confused as to what are they looking for in a certain game.
I'm not a die hard Mario fan, the only Mario game I played are the original super Mario, Mario 64, and Mario kart 8. but seeing the user reviews at metacritic just makes me... mad. so I want to help address some of it.
1) all game titles are all the same with a little bit of added formula (I.E the hat in Mario odyssey, ship battles in assassins creed 4, etc.), in fact Mario is the most diverse character out there that have racing games, party games, sports games, even educational games, and more. so stating that "there's nothing new" (even though the "new" gimmick in this game here is the hat) in a game is a negative factor are biased as hell.
2) NOT ALL GAME ARE SUPPOSED TO BE CHALLENGING OR REALISTIC. I think Nintendo already stated this when they (badly) marketed the Wii U to kids that they make games not as a way for players to escape reality into a new one, but as a way to have odd, creative, weird, and FUN experiences in a game, that's why their games are rarely realistic and are more family friendly (or kiddie as some would say). The last challenging Mario games that I've seen or known about is the original super Mario, and it was challenging due to it's limitations at the time.
3) I mean the game is about plumbers fighting against a giant freaking turtle that kidnapped a princess of a mushroom people kingdom and the plumber get paid by coins inside a small (but the same size as his body) brick cube that he have to break, and THE WEIRDEST THING that you can think of is the alien hat??
I'm not saying that the review that gives good score are in the right and all bad ones are wrong, reviews should be seen by the details of their analysis of the game. most reviews are dumb because good and bad reviews are all saying the same thing, it's just a matter of the reviewer personal experience/ problems with the game that'll influence the score (most of the time biased), and review scores will attract assholes and band-wagoners.
For some reason, I'm torn on whether or not you spelled all those names incorrectly on purpose for effect, or you genuinely dunced the whole comment, in which both instances I tip my hat to you sir.

Woah, I get that people should respect each others' opinions, but this is way out of wack. For starters, a new IP? Mario hasn't died out in any form or fashion. For the past several decades, Mario has been a forefront in the genres he's served it. From 2D to 3D platformers, to all his various spin-offs, it's incredible what Nintendo can do with a single IP. If you don't like Odyessey, chances are you just don't like the 3D platformer genre. Unless you can give me an indepth analysis of this game, compared with another platformer akin to Mario (which is a giant task), then ok, I see your point, but the only 2 things I can assume from your comment is:

I like the switch its just I dont have anything on it I would like to play right now until Xenoblade. Ratchet n Clank in my opinion was a better game. Better storyline, more n better gameplay mechanics, great level up system, graphically better, challenging bosses with better design, great platforming with the use of different skills n tools, great variety of weapons, n even though Ratchet doesnt have as much charm as Mario he has way more character.

Odyssey is a solid 6/10 - 7/10 though. In retrospect it’s not as great as everyone says it is. It has a very small replay value. I mean I know it’s Mario but the story is as cliche as always. All but a couple of the worlds are just very bland and not very exciting. Not mentioning that the worlds are relatively small also.
Then what lowers the score even more for me is that after you beat the game, you can just BUY moons to max out. The whole point of the game is to find and collect the moons. What’s the point if you can just buy them.

RE: "This game is too easy" - I think it completely depends on how you play it. If you go to toad for all moon locations, and only get the amount of moons you need to get to the next level as soon as possible, it will probably be fun, but definitely doesn't accomplish what the game is built for. Just like with BOTW - there are options; and the way you play affects the enjoyment
I think when they say "easy" they are talking about how easy it is to play and win and beat. Having added a few challenging moons post game doesn't make the game "not easy". 90% of the moons are easy.

I don't get why they have these expectations of Super Hard Mario games, except for a few instances or final levels, Mario hasn't been hard since he first jumped to 3D. Odessey is all about exploring (hence the overabundance of moons, narrative taking you to a different expansive universe, the incentive of adding more collectibles in already vistited worlds), it's more of a collectathon.
There are tons of moons that are very hard to get. There are also hundreds of moons you can't even get until you beat the game. It's not easy unless you go for the low hanging fruit only.
I accidently went through a level backwards and learned you can infinitely combo the hat dive.

There are a few other places you can be a dinosaur, for instance the sub-world section of the wooded kingdom, and a few pipe sections scattered around. It is used sparingly, but it certainly isn't just available in one place.

I'd just like to say a few things-
1. Being easy isn't a flaw with any game, being easy is varied depending on the player themselves
2. Motion controls are optional, even if they aren't that good to you. They're still optional regardless, you aren't missing out on much just because you can't or don't want to use them
3. Just because the game is 900p or 1080p doesn't affect the gameplay at all, 900p still looks fine and you can hardly tell the different between it. So why is that such a big deal to people?

Being easy can be a flaw depending on the game, but people must keep in mind that Nintendo is a family friendly company and, despite their efforts to bring adult titles to the Switch, Mario remains as their main family friendly, "Everyone"-rated game. Being easy is not a flaw, it's a design choice, and even then they gave us enough mobility tools to optionally amp up the difficulty if we so desire by skipping sections or explore seemingly out of reach areas (There's been a few videos popping up about that. Hidden coin stacks on really hard to reach places.)
If people is looking for a huge challenge laid in front of you from the get-go, they're looking in the wrong place. It doesn't matter what they say, they are looking for a Mario reskin of Cuphead, and Nintendo won't give them that. At least not in the foreseeable future.
