An important part about there not having been the concept of zombies in this world is not just the name, but the fact that they don't have all the tons of movies we do to reference and therefore think ahead about all the ways to avoid or protect themselves against them. Many of the things we see them do or not do and we say "Oh that was dumb they should have....." but we only think of many of things they should do, or not do, is because "Like in that other zombie movie". The comparison to vampires would be more like not knowing that you need to stake them in the heart, or decapitate them or to always carry a cross and garlic. They don't have all the Romero movies to think of tactics and have to learn it all as they go.

This episode with Carl's horrible pain, Rick's dealing with grief and Shane being supportive is so realistic and amazing.
