Remember backing Dubacilla who came from a country mile back to finish 4th and give me an each way return. Under a welter burden the ground simply wasn't soft enough for Master Oats who ran a gallant race under tiring late on. Three Gold Cup winners in this race as well, in the shape of Master Oats(95), Cool Ground(92) and Garrison Savannah(91). Great upload...:-)
Master Oats was still immense that day. Lumbered with 11-10 on his back (giving 18lbs to winner and even more to most others) over a distance about a mile too far from ideal with ground not likely suiting either…end of a really tough season including only 3 weeks between this and a Gold Cup? Such a class horse that season.
I remember this well because I was on a University field trip in Morecambe, we did a sweep and I got Party Politics, I’d backed him in 1992 when he won it. So when he started making his move at the end I thought I was in for a very good bigger, but it wasn’t to be!
Must be the classiest Grand National of the 90s at least. 2 previous grand national winners. 3 if you count the Void 3 Gold Cup Winners. 3 RSA Chase Winners 1 Hennessy Gold Cup winner. 1 Irish Grand National Winner 1 Whitbred Gold Cup Winner 1 Welsh Grand National Winner That year’s Gold Cup 1st 2nd and 3rd
Was with family as a kid on family retreat my sister picked out royal athlete at 66/1 2 days before .. my dad put £5 on it for us as a treat jumping for joy lol what a horse!
Was unemployed at the time, put a pound on royal athlete, ive never screamed as loud watching it! I thought he ploughed through the final fence! X great memories xxx
I wonder is this the only year when the first 2 in The Gold Cup both ran in the National in the same year. Plus there were quite a few previous National winners in the the field. Probably one of the classiest Nationals ever.
Nice or not nice is nothing to do with it. Jenny was royalty in horse training. She was the royal that never was, if you get my meaning. A woman of joy and tears, pride, passion and integrity.
Norman Williamson did not give Master Oats a great ride. They were attempting the Cheltenham Gold Cup/National double, and Master Oats finished legless. Kim Bailey generously said Master Oats needed very soft to slow all the others down, but, imho, Williamson rode a poorly judged race. Had he kept the horse mid-division slightly on the inner, I think he had a great chance.

Royal Athlete one of the best

Still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Went off at 40/1, but I got 50 in the morning.
I put a pound on royal athlete, got 41 quid back, lot of money in 95 mate!
Some old favourites in this
Great memories
Best round of jumping ever

The 1992 winner finished second here. Comply Or Die, the 2008 winner is probably the best National winner to be placed more recently.
Back in the 30s Golden Miller and Thomond took part.
@@uhegbu hedgehunter the best recent winner
What a brilliant trainer Jenny Pitman was.
Martin Pipe would disagree with you
Not a nice person either
