20 | Crossing the Western Pacific on a Wooden Boat

- We set out on an ocean passage across the western pacific from Fiji to New Caledonia, about 700 nautical miles. This passage had some great sailing, and some scary moments as a severe squall passed over us in the night and kept the boat pinned down on her side until we could reduce sail. Overall this was one of our best passages yet, seven days spent exploring the beauty of the open ocean.
Julia is a traditional wooden boat, built in 1960 in Desolation Sound in British Columbia to William Atkin's Ingrid design. She is a Pacific ocean veteran, with many blue water miles under her keel.

Just a note that this was filmed prior to the recent unrest in New Caledonia.
was wondering about that
Absolutely beautiful Ingrid….
Question about your solar plant… How many watts of solar were you running during that passage…? And what is your daily amp draw down on your house bank? I like your dodger solar array mounts… Any issues regarding daily battery amp replacement to your house bank?
Great video of the passage. Thank you.,,,
I’m departing Mexico for the Marquesas next March/April….
Enjoy your stay in NC👍👍⛵️⛵️
must have been close
Great news to see you safe a month ago. I look forward to seeing your next post. Stay adventurous, stay safe!
Your videos are so clear. Thanks for great videos and not about getting drunk on a beach partying or advertising a bunch of products. Just real sailing and sober people thanks.
I also like the music a lot
100%!!!
wade - Yes. Their visuals are the best. I sailed around in 1973 and love the water colors, big waves, even the nasty squall.
I write this while safe and dry and warm in the woods of northern California. The ocean is a very unnatural place to live. But love it !
I think you two have the best sailing channel on TH-cam. Really enjoy your content. Thanks. 😁
Agreed
Second that!
It is always worth the wait for your excellent videos. Some very beautiful sailing. 👍🏻
Nothing healthier for a wooden boat than getting it out to sea and romping across an ocean. That knock down didn’t sweep the decks clean which is a testament of the durability of your deck layout.Good no nonsense boat. Thanks for sharing this incredible lifetime experience with us.
Great video. I think this video has captured the size of the waves at sea better than any other video I have seen. Well done, and safe passages.
You can fix your roller sail with good quality housepaint. We use Behr latex primer/enamel, flat. It has lots of titanium dioxide, the same stuff used in sailmaking materials to make UV resistant mark cloth they put on lighter headsails. I am a lifetime sailmaker and have used this on many sails. Just remove the old cover and paint two thinned coats of the paint. You can re-do it in a couple years. Costs about 35$ a gallon. Can be tinted if you die for color. This has been tested and is used in experimental aircraft that have dacron wings. Works on your house for many years, why not your sail. Then you get rid of the heavy stuff, save a ton of money, and get a super tight roll as well. Just sayin'
Thanks for the info. I will remember that. I like low tech solutions.
Excuse my ignorance, but by "roller sail" are you referring to headsail / jib??
@@mrbogardmusic i didn't want to say roller fooling, which is how i think of it after years of sailmaking and deaaling with the various issues, including the sudden failures that happen because people don't ever really look at their sails and see how they are ready to blow up. They just roll them in until that fateful day.
Excellent advice! :) Anything that helps sailors save $$$$ is sooo welcome :)
@@Mike7O7OFunny, I was under the impression that yacht owners were wealthy retirees with large trust funds and booming stock options and pension pots.
Especially enjoyed the quiet moments when the music is off and just the sound of the boat making her way as she hums a familiar tune under her breath in chorus with the Wind and Sea. Have a lovely journey and thank you for sharing.
It's refreshing to imagine the camaraderie cruisers share, especially in this encounter at sea. What a treat for them if their paths coincide, again
A wooden Ingrid is a thing of beauty. You make very good sailing videos along with the commentary. Best of luck.
Perfect timing, just sat down with a brew and your latest adventure pops up for some of my favourite escapism!
🍻To nomads everywhere🥂
Great video of those powerful ocean swells, that's difficult to capture on film! Looking forward to the next episode!
I love you guys, love the boat, love the skills. I wouldn’t disparage any woman who even set foot on a small offshore sailboat, but to see one, who was visibly scared and shaking, maintain her composure was refreshing!
That is the most I have felt like I was sailing from any video on youtube! Thanks! ⛵⛵⛵
So refreshing to watch a video with appropriate, non-intrusive music. Watched it to the end. Brill! UK viewer.
It is a delight whenever you release a new video.
Real sailing, nice video, nice music and outstanding narration….I enjoyed it a lot….
The work you put into Julia is evident in how well she is going now. Tarnished brass on a wooden sailboat are just so right. Beautiful video documentary about your adventure!
You guys restore the romanticism often lost in cruising vlogs. I really appreciate how you chronicle and capture to the sea-state of your passage. Well done.
Just absolutely love watching you sail and explore. What a wonderful life. Be safe
Thanks again for a wonderful video. Always appreciate the effort and work it takes to put these together and I'm always happy to see a new video. Cheers.
Beautiful and inspiring. Thanks so much for taking the time to get out these videos... they capture the essence of the cruising dream in a purity that few others can approach.
The greater the distance between the highest highs and the lowest lows, the more perspective and wisdom life brings. You two have just covered new ground between those two extremes. Congrats, ...enjoy the bigger in-between!
I'm so impressed with you two "salts". Courage, curiosity and love of the ocean is quite a combination and you have it. Your vessel is the perfect rig for your passages and seems to find a groove of stability and strength.
Nice goin.....!!!!
My favorite sailing channel. Something very calming and organic watching your beautiful wooden boat work through the water. Thanks for another great video!
My Sunday’s are always the best when Madison Boatworks has a new video posted. Thank you for sharing your wonderful sailing adventures. Truly magnificent work. There is not another sailing channel on TH-cam that captures the true essence of sailing like this channel accomplishes!
After getting caught by surprise by unexpected gusts, I cannot imagine what you two must have experienced during that squall. Glad you two and Julia made it through safe and sound.
I am 61 years old already and I am completely fascinated with sailing and the ocean and have never been sailing. I just love boats and the water. This is an interesting video I must say. I watch numerous sailing videos and this one is pretty cool. I love the idea of traveling and arriving at an anchorage and getting up in the morning sitting on the deck with a nice cup of coffee and watching everyone getting their day started, exploring the places with no schedule and enjoying different places. Love your videos and look forward to more.
61 is young! :) I was offered a spot on a 37' Najad making a Pacific passage in 2019, and celebrated my 70th birthday not too far from the equator. One of the best experiences of my life.
@@humblestever24 I meant in the dext of I haven’t spent much time on the ocean not to mention sailing but I still have a fascination with it
@@humblestever24 This is getting taken out of context. I am 61 and still working in construction as an electrician. What I mean by that is I wish I could have taken time in my life to enjoy the ocean more. When I retire soon that’s what I plan on doing. My comment was directed at the guy on the video cause I thought it was cool .
I am mid seventies and have sailed all my life. Physically, it is getting difficult now, so passage making is in the past. Life, kids, work, etc stopped me living aboard for extended periods. I did do one trans Atlantic eastwards from St Maarten to the UK. I enjoyed the video very much.
SO happy to see another video!!
Thank you for posting your latest part of your journey. The epic sail continues!
Beautiful images ! Thank you !
One really feels the movement of the boat.
How exhilarating!
Very courageous!
Thank you for sharing this beautiful video.
Glad to see your back after a short pause. Great video!
Watching from Victoria, BC so you can imagine the smile on my face when I heard the other boat say it was from Victoria.
Beautifully done as usual, thanks guys!
What beautiful scenes of sea and sky and the ketch itself!
50 knots gail winds unforgiving sea squals recipe for certain mutiny amongst the crew, but the second mate remained steadfast. Red skies sailor's delight, so happy the sea passages continues on, cheers from Sf bay
Waves...
Filmed so beautifully!
As always beautiful to watch, thanks guys
Absolutely a great job guys!
From a fellow Pacific Northwest sailor.
"We sighted land on the seventh day" sounds almost biblical. There was the wonderful photography we have come to expect from you guys, showing the Pacific with its ever changing moods, and that wonderful sky.....indescribably beautiful. All the colors, the light, what a show! That was a scary squall that tested your Julia, but she didn't let you down. Thanks for sharing another memorable adventure.
Did the Auckland- Fiji- Vanuatu- New Caledonia circuit in 2023 on a Hood 38, had a nasty trough come through just before entering the koro sea but we had plenty of pre-warning, your squall looked worse ! The passage from Musket Cove to Tana in Vanuatu was probably the best three days sailing of my life, love your skin on frame dinghy :-) fair winds !
Thanks for this beautiful video Who remember me my navigations. I loved the song of the sea produced by the progress of the wooden boat. Only the wooden boat resonates like a musical instrument full of harmonics.
I listened to it enraptured and being on board I enjoyed the beauties of marine nature, including the rough bad weather. I love this type of navigation and now that I am old I miss it a lot. Thank you!
Thank you for a perfect video. Seeing the vast ocean and the waves is captivating.
I guess this means you'll be uploading on a more frequent basis. Great and realistic footage. Thanks for sharing. Much appreciated. Take care.
Gorgeous photography, thanks.
Another beautiful chapter on your journey! Thanks for sharing
Beautiful images, incredible narration and another epic sail, your vlogs are awesome!
thanks for sharing!
Beautiful video in witch you also show that a passing isn’t always easy. Can’t wait for the next one!
A treat to sail with you again,,and have you show me the beauty of shadows on water and the sound of waves on a hull and strength of your wooden boat,,you built it well
Beautiful music excellent narration
Such lovely people and vessel❤
Sizler gerçek denizcilersiniz.Tebrik ediyorum.May your bow be clear and your wind be easy
Many thanks for another episode. They are always worth the wait. I’m thinking this captures more what ocean cruising was like maybe 50 years ago, in all the classic cruising books I read as a teenager. And love all the actual sailing footage, even managing to capture the waves, which is always challenging. And appreciate the shared experience like your watch schedule.
Te lo puedo asegurar, hace 50 años era más o menos así, a parte de no tener ni Internet ni GPS ni información meteorológica....ni frigorifico! por eso pescábamos más.
Always a treat when you guys upload a new video!
Love your videos. Just wish they were more often 😂 seriously though, they are so poetic.
My favorite sailing porn! Fantastic boat. Beautiful scenery. Unobtrusively narrated. The sporadic posts makes these videos feel so very special. Safe travels!
It's a beautiful world we live in, wouldn't you agree ?
Mother Earth, let's take care of her. Thank you for sharing your trip.
Me habéis impresionado.
Great to see your post again, the videos give me goose bumps. Thank you for sharing all the beauty.
True to life. "It just came out of nowhere " that squall. But reefed just in case. Sniff the wind in that way, recognise the portents. Something is about to happen. And it does. A relief almost. The Galerna on the north coast of Galicia is one of those,
Always impressed with you both! Your courage is to be commended! The experience will make you both stronger! Can’t wait to see the next experience!
That was wonderful. Thanks for the great videography and sharing all that.
Always a treat to see your videos. Wishing you all the best
Majestic
Wonderful memories to last a lifetime.
Glad to see you back👍…You are one my Favorite Channels…Try to Stay Safe and Enjoy 😎
Beautiful escape , I love your films. The calm narrative, well chosen unobtrusive music and focus on the beauty of nature and the vessel sailing and sailing. The rwo of you are there like old friends with whom one has settled into a comfortable togetherness with no need for endless yabber-yabber. 🌷✨️💕
Always a treat when there is a new video out, a real treat thank you so much for sharing1

Thanks for your excellent channel. On of the best sailing channels on TH-cam.

That was a good passage, mostly smooth sailing interspursed with some excitement! Again, excellent photography and music! The whole video was excellent but that last shot of Julia against the sunset was just over the top! Enjoy your stay!
your videos are getting better and better. I appreciate the detail in the sailing conditions and vessel. Safe travels and best wishes!

Thanks, always happy to see a new video from you guys....never disappoint
THAT'S really a romantic SAILING VIDEO ..... wonderful scenes from the waves and your boat ..... congratulations for your successful turn 😁
Some years ago I was sailing with a similar boat and friends from Hauraki Gulf / Auckland to New Caledonia ..... just wonderful ! 😀
Im really enjoying this video. Its a cold, windy and wet day here in Montreal today, and I have my balcony doors wide open to let in the cold breeze, and the effect was full on while watching your video! I really felt like I was on the waves with you.
I always enjoy your videos and the way you describe your adventures. Thank you!
Again an amazing video, thank you!
YES!!! Outstanding!! ❤️👏🤌
Ty you so much so happy your beck. Cheers from Vancouver Island
omg this is soooo beautiful to watch! knowing also some other youtube sailing channels yours is maybe the greates and most beautiful. Calm narrating, great music, down to earth sailing and epic footage 😎🤌 awesome!!
I recently discovered your channel and I really love seeing your adventures. My, my, crossing such vast distances of water in that wooden sailboat is amazing and scary at the same time. Your videography is great, so great that at times I have to turn away from the rolling waves for a few seconds because I almost feel that I am right there with you. I can’t wait to watch your next adventures.
