This video helped me immensely this morning. I was using my backup key the last couple weeks after digging it out because my doors locked on me mysteriously at the gas station. Tried starting 2003 XJ8 this morning with that backup key and .........nothing. No crank. Put battery on a charger most of the day. Noticed it was drawing some amps, so figured that might be the problem. Came back to fully charged battery later on.....still nothing. No crank with backup key that worked up until now. Watched your video and the light bulb went on. Sure enough, tried my original every day key ......VOILA!!! Started right up! Maybe these keys are getting to an age where they are going to be a high fail rate part. Pass the word.
This was an excellent video. I have the exact same problem with the exact same car and model year. The Jaguar dealership has had it four times and couldn't figure it out, new battery etc all repairs that didn't work. Still sits there unable to start. For some reason placing the key in the drivers door, locking it and unlocking it and repeating that cycle again seems to reset the key and starts some of the time. It looks like I need new keys, something that wasn't even suggested by the experts. So thank you very much for this video, it was the most in depth and accurate video I have seen with this problem... People should also check to make sure the light is engaged by the Park Shift as the car won't start if it doesn't recognize park at the shifter either... This model year is plagued with this problem you solved... Thank you!
I have a newer model a 2005 jaguar xk8. You can reprogram the key and the remote controller. There is actually only 1 key given with a jaguar. The other is a valet key green and can only be used in the door and ig ition. The guy or customer may have pressed the valet button by accident and now the regular key doesnt work. I am almost positive that your diagnosis is correct and it is the key. Good job! And excellent video.
Ivan, you need an multi-frequency RFID reader that you can place near the key to see if it is responding. It is likely that RFID chip in the key uses the low frequency radio (the power lighting your LED device) to re-transmit the correct numbers back to the car. Even if you couldn't actually read the data, you would then know at least if the key was dead or not. Maybe this key was dropped one too many times ......
Looks like you boys are having a good time out there on Staten Island!!! Always interesting case studies. Usually easier working as a group! Looking forward to more videos
I believe that the security indicator light is not at the top of the dashboard, that is the ambient either temperature or light sensor. The light your looking for is a little LED directly left of the gear shifter. Typically people miss it because the LED is finished smooth against the moulding, When you run your finger over it you don't realize it's there
Hey Ivan, it's worth understanding clearlty exactly what the flashing on the key test coil indicates. Tell me if I'm wrong, but the most it can tell you is that the Ignition cylinder antenna coil is receiving a V pulse from the immo module? It does not tell you if the embedded key chip transponder is sending its code even though the magnetic induction from the transponder does also pulse the cylinder coil. There is really no way of telling from the test flash LED whether this indicates just a good pulse from the key module, or a good pulse from the key module and then from the key transponder. ie you don't know if the transponder is good or bad? Do you think that's right?

Great question, Drew! We did a quick continuity check on the Y and W wires while the KTM was unplugged, but there was no way to get at the wiring while it was plugged in.
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics True, accessibility is always a challenge. From Jagrepair.com : "Take your transmission shifter and put it in the “N” position from “P” and try to start the car. The shifter selector switch has been known to wear out or out of adjustment causing a no start situation. If the car does not start put it back in “P” and check the inertia switch. When activated, it de-energizes the ignition relays in the engine compartment, driver's side fascia and trunk fuse boxes. It also removes ground inputs from the BPM and windshield wiper stalk switch. This stops the engine and fuel pump, unlocks any locked door, and de-energizes unnecessary electrical systems. The switch is reset by pressing down on the rubber cap on the top of the switch. If your doors lock, windows, seats and the wipers work and the dash lights up then all should be good, but if it makes you feel better reset the inertia switch. Check that you have a fully charged battery and that you have power to all fuse panels. First check that you have 12V + a few. This is important and should not be taken lightly. I have the same problem with my 96 I use the module first then it wouldn't start then I got out locked it back with the module unlock the it manually outside the vehicle then it started
Since this is an older system, it makes me wonder if the system could be tricked (bypassed) into allowing the engine to start by connecting a test light to battery + and then connecting the other end to the "OK to start" wire, then turning the key to the on position and attempting to start the engine. It might work, but I don't know exactly how this system functions. Could it also be a possibility that the "OK to start" wire is open between the key transponder module and the engine computer?
The keys internal transponder chip does not use a battery. It uses the magnetic field produced by the transceiver ring antenna, around the key cylinder, to excite and wake up the transponder chip inside the key. This magnetic field was seen at work when the key was initially turned on and his tools LED blinked. This proved the key theft module was turning on and energized the transceiver antenna ring. Hope this helps. Have a blessed and safe week.
@@billyyoder8171 oh ok, Thanks for the info. the led proved that the key theft module was transmitting, but there wasn't a test to validate that the electronics in the key were working correctly. Can't you fake the "ok to start" signal on that connector from the key module to the body control module? Maybe just with a test light. I would assume it's just a logic level supplied by the key module once it has read and verified the key - No?
@@randyhughes5160 If your relay only operates when you pulse the coil with a one-time code.. I suggest doing some research on cryptography, if you can stomach some math. I'm pretty sure everything in a Jag that old is thoroughly broken by now, but if they did their jobs half way right it shouldn't be as easy as a DC signal.
[back, again. / I called the jaguar dealership and they told me this. The reason why my jaguar won't crank and won't start is 1. check the starter relay. or 2. bad electric fuel pump. or 3. the jaguar needs to be reprogrammed and i would have to give them over the phone some info on the car
Not even similar to the Mercedes parasitic draw from the ignition key being programmed by a 3rd party, but same territory. Perhaps a replacement lock with the key from Jaguar ? OK if the owner is a millionaire. Interesting to see how this resolves.
I think it's unfair to call British logic system in this video, logic state 0=low, logic state 1=high, your reading it like it should be saying on/off. If you read what it says at the top of the column it says "VALUE". I bet if you look at code setting criteria for this it will tell you the inputs are active high or active low therefore what your seeing is the logical value of the input/output. On an active low system taking the input low can actually switch something "ON".

Why don't you enter the EKA code via the drivers door locks and if it recieves it at bcm put key in ignition engine should start quick check to make sure that bcm and pcm work crank run and then further investigation
Hello! Everyone in here I have 1997 jaguar XJ6 L the car is not locking or unlocking with the fob just with the key have no interior lights headlights not working and no crank at all I try started with the direct wire to the starter and the car is running any ideas how to fix this issues? Thank you all in advance.
And the swifter not moving even when the car is on
Great logic exercise, is there any way to check the key's logic
Hi Ivan do you know where I can get that tool that you got from keith ? would love to get one ! thanks again Joe
I have a no crank issue my fuse box clicks and red light flashing on dash whenever I try to crank it and the key fob isn't working even after a new battery I noticed a crack in the board could it be that ?
Does Jag still use LUCAS ELECTRIC? I remember watching a show about cars and the host said Brits drink their beer warm becauze even Fridges are made by Lucas.
This car is Ford electronics
great video Ivan and Maic
What code reader are you using?
I have the same problem with my 96 I use the module first then it wouldn't start then I got out locked it back with the module unlock the it manually outside the vehicle then it started
Since this is an older system, it makes me wonder if the system could be tricked (bypassed) into allowing the engine to start by connecting a test light to battery + and then connecting the other end to the "OK to start" wire, then turning the key to the on position and attempting to start the engine. It might work, but I don't know exactly how this system functions. Could it also be a possibility that the "OK to start" wire is open between the key transponder module and the engine computer?
Joseph Wash I was wondering that too. I thought the key code was also in the engine ecu. :(
Friend you Ave proble between the computer and the board
What scan tool are you using . I'm trying to decide which one to buy.
does the key have a internal battery?
I'd love to see what the inside of the key looks like. a spectrum analyzer would be helpful to see what the RF transmissions look like.
Was this issue ever resolved? I am facing roughly the same problem.
Yeah you need a new set of ignition keys.
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I dont have a scan tool as fancy as yours, but using a voltmeter as was able to rule out everything except keys and a couple other things. I told my customer that he would likely need a new set of programmed ignition keys. So it's really good to see a video with almost the exact same issue, coming to the exact same conclusion as my own. Thanks for replying, and making videos!
These cars use that crappy Ford key which will also tear up your pockets.
Anyone else shocked that 2001 Jag is still on the road to begin with?
All this crap just to start a car.
And if that doesn't work change all the fuses and relays
Did the key ever fix the issue?
are you locate in north east.. or else?
Can't you just wire a resistor in and bypass the KTM?
Why not just 'hardwire' the "okay to start" input of the ECU?
@@trevorvanbremen4718 it's coded with key but I'm sure there's a way to bypass
I would agree, seems like a bad key.
Jaguars make me swear alot. 😁 Nice diag to figure out that one!
You guys make a great team there. The Staten Island automotive gremlins don't stand a chance. 👍🍻
Can't you fake the "ok to start" signal on that connector from the key module to the body control module? Maybe just with a test light.
I would assume it's just a logic level supplied by the key module once it has read and verified the key - No?
Great question, Dave. We actually tried a test light "bypass test" at the PCM, but the signal is more complicated than just a simple "ON or OFF".
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics has this been a confirmed fix with a new key and program?
I have one of those transponder detectors too. Best $5 I’ve ever spent 😂
John Pilgrim same here even tho I don’t use it much lol

@@SinCityAnimal south main auto, Eric O, has a link in his Amazon tools link. Just scroll through it and you'll see the tool.

@@billyyoder8171 Thank-you
Good case study
have you check the battery in the key?
There is no battery in the key...just a chip :)
Very nice video.thanks
I saw one video of a guy with a mustang that would not start like this and he put his key by a magnet and then the car would then start !
Why can’t you apply power to the wire coming out of the key transponder and start the car
It's coded or it wouldn't be secure
That would be too easy ;)
Jusb1066 that’s like saying you can’t buy pass a relay
@@randyhughes5160 If your relay only operates when you pulse the coil with a one-time code.. I suggest doing some research on cryptography, if you can stomach some math.
I'm pretty sure everything in a Jag that old is thoroughly broken by now, but if they did their jobs half way right it shouldn't be as easy as a DC signal.
Monkeh the more computer they put in it the easier it is to bypass maybe you never seen a guy steal a car you can bypass it all
Weird British logic? Just like the way they count the second floor of a building as the first floor. The first floor apparently doesn't get a number.
[back, again. / I called the jaguar dealership and they told me this. The reason why my jaguar won't crank and won't start is 1. check the starter relay. or 2. bad electric fuel pump. or 3. the jaguar needs to be reprogrammed and i would have to give them over the phone some info on the car
Do my dog could have found that problem and about 2 meanings may be 3
Not even similar to the Mercedes parasitic draw from the ignition key being programmed by a 3rd party, but same territory.
Alarm system ? Cutting comms between bcm, key module?
Change the battery in the key fob!
There is no key fob lol...transponder is integrated into the key
