8:23 It wasn't an orphanage. It was her house. With her family inside. That was the cause for Alice going "insane." Her survivor's guilt is 100% his fault alone. He tricked her into believing it was her own fault for varying reasons, but wonderland, Alice's own psyche, tore apart his hypnosis, years of brainwashing, and gaslighting simply by the sheer absurdity of it.
The twist in Alice Madness Returns did not come out of nowhere. The truth about Dr. Bumby is foreshadowed as early as the opening cutscene and is driven home to the player with less subtly in every chapter. NPC dialogue in the first two chapters alone pretty much spell it out. While the overall symbolism of the Infernal Train doesn't add much to the story, it becomes a symbolic Chekhov's Gun when Bumby meets his end.
I'm also pretty sure that Bumby didn't burn down an orphanage, it was Alice's home. Soma's is pretty well hinted at too. It's made really clear throughout the playthrough that the scan is just a copy of the mind and not a transfer. Spoiler below: It's the reason why there was an issue with people committing suicide after being scanned. They didn't just want to scan a copy of themselves and wanted to actually live on in the simulation so they were killing themselves immediately following the scan.
I don’t think it’s very obvious on your first playthrough, I for one did not see it coming that he was selling children into the sex trade, but the story does reveal that he did things to Lizzie and caused the fire, but the end reveal did catch me by total surprise tbh
The ending of _Alice, Madness returns_ is actually even worse than you made it out to be: 1) he pinned the blame for the fire on Alice, and made her even believe that it was her! 2) it is implied that he doesn't even shy away from lobotomy to create his dolls! 3) Alice realizes the truth and murders him in broad daylight and relapses into madness. PS: 1) it wasn't the orphanage but Alice's home and he killed them all, except her. 2) There was an orphanage like this in the real world in post-war Vienna (officially a catholic orphanage!)
Also that he made advanced on her sister who was a minor, he had access because he worked with her dad. and on the night of the fire he raped her, killed her in the process and set up the fire to cover up his tracts. Since then he has been selling kid prostitution and then making them forget it. He probably did it to Alice too or was going to
So no matter what, he won. If Alice tried to get the police, no one would believe her because she was an asylum mate. If she just left him alone, he can continue his crazy scheme unfazed. And with her canon ending, she's driven mad and is likely now wanted for murder. BRO'S PLAN WAS FULLPROOF, I HATE HIM
The twist in Soma was out on the open since we see the transfer happen once before. And it's discussed in game. The only one holding on to the idea that it's a transfer is Simon, who loses it at the end. And it's his screaming that causes the unit holding Catherine to short circuit after she finally loses her patience with him.
Exactly. It's a great game but the "twist" was frustratingly obvious long before the end. The only way it can be justified is that, in the middle of all the horror, Simon just didn't want to see it.
also Jules stated that Simon was alone at the end of the game when in fact the original clone Simon you play as at the start of the game is still in the facility in a unconscious like state
In the first place, the simon we play as is nothing more than a scan of the original. The original simon dies a couple of years after the scan and like decades before the game.
the twist gets fridge-horror scary when you take into consideration the amount of diving suits missing, the headless diving-suits in Upsilon and the likeliness of there being more Simons before the player character who failed at some point, maybe even some enemies you encounter actually being Simon but in another mechanical body, unaware it's trying to kill it's own another self.
8:07 he didn't burned orphanage, he burned her house, which is main thing in first game, where, if I remeber correctly, Alice try to convince herself that fire wasn't happened because of her.

@@stevenbarten1755 The EARN YOUR KEEP part refers to how the kids are being made to forget where they've come from so they don't resist Dr. Bumby pimping them out to the highest bidder. I’m continuing the lobby for what culture to post a bloody spoilers list at the beginning of the video and in the description for videos like this that are literally all spoilers. I hate debating whether I want to watch it because I like what culture, but constantly being wary of having to hit the pause or skip button before a spoiler I don’t want to see. It’s easy enough to put a spoilers list at the beginning rather than diving headlong into them.
I'm not sure what prompted Jules to start putting in this sweet little messages at the end, but I always eventually forget and it's a very nice surprise when I find myself watching another video.
I was kinda sad not to see the plot twist from Death Mark make it onto here... At the start you meet this living doll named Mary who tries to help you with the curse/mark thing. Halfway through the game you find her shattered across the floor. At the end its revealed that she's the source of the marks and in the bad ending has one of the creepiest moments with "Mary is right behind you."
I can't praise Madness Returns enough, I love that game. Though the twist isn't out of left field, either. Plenty of foreshadowing. But mostly I want to comment on the fact that TRUE CRIME made the top of this list. Like, I don't know anyone who even remembers this game and it makes the TOP of this list.
It's Typhon, NOT Typhoon. Typhon are the aliens; a Typhoon is a tropical storm. It's Morgan, NOT Mason. Morgan is the main character of Prey; Mason is the main character of CoD Black Ops. It's H. R. Giger, NOT H. R. Geiger. Giger was the Artist; Geiger was the Physicist.
Monster Prom is mostly very cheerful and tongue in cheek, with bucketfuls of black comedy. Sure, some routes are more serious than others, but it's mainly just funny. Then the second term DLC has bundles of depressing endings. I'd say the craziest twist is that Hope, a minor side character from a witch coven, is actually just one of several Hopes who are endlessly killed and then replaced with no memory of her own death. It's just so out there.
Spoiler for Death Stranding ahead. You should have included the twist that shows us that Amelie, Sam's sister, was actually some sort of spirit and the real Amelie is trapped on the beach.
Say that you didn't understand prey whitout saying it, if you think the whole ending is "get a thypoon to convince other thypoon to stop the war and all be friends" you didn't understand the ending, they "created" to fight other thypoon, it would be pretty stupid otherwise
True crime was so great at the time. The ability to take out Cars at the tires and shoot from your vehicle were what separated it from GTA. Well that, and the whole ending
I really enjoy your videos, but, somehow, it felt SO SATISFYING to hear you say 'Alice's sister', instead of 'Alice's-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s sister'.
"The train is coming with it's shiny cars, with comfy seats, and wheels of stars. So hush, my little ones, have no fear. The man in the Moon is the engineer."
these are great twists but I do wish DDLC was on here too... I mean, Yuri's death came out of absolutely nowhere and was awful (not to mention the absolute shock/trauma of seeing Sayori's body omg)
So to understand why true crime was such a jarring twist, it's essentially GTA but you're a loose cannon cop. You can play for hours and never see anything that breaks too far from reality.
Narcosis. You find out that you aren't even the one narrating the story. On top of that you don't even make it to escape pod in time and die wondering the ocean floor with the ghostly phantom for all eternity.

Big love Jules, I've been struggling recently and your mental health speeches are one of the few things that are keeping me going
The writing in this video is actually brilliant
I've a feeling #1 pulled some inspiration from "Big Trouble in Little China" with that plot twist.
Missed one 😉
I still remember that Hist mission from Oblivion. That was an awesome plot twist!
As the fighters guild quests were not as enjoyable, I did feel some impact of emotion as the reality sets in that I helped murder an entire village
3:00 SARAH??!?!?!?!
The best part about Prey was chilling in space and basically becoming Thor with a 🔧
Totally amazing video,Jules from what culture gaming, fantastic job.
Say that you didn't understand prey whitout saying it, if you think the whole ending is "get a thypoon to convince other thypoon to stop the war and all be friends" you didn't understand the ending, they "created" to fight other thypoon, it would be pretty stupid otherwise
I'm 03:28 in and wondering when I can see what the source of the yucky thumbnail is.. Edit FOUND IT!!
True crime was so great at the time. The ability to take out Cars at the tires and shoot from your vehicle were what separated it from GTA. Well that, and the whole ending
Heat Signature is a similar design to Hotline Miami while also having a similar downer ending.
We need a True Crime remake asap
I really enjoy your videos, but, somehow, it felt SO SATISFYING to hear you say 'Alice's sister', instead of 'Alice's-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s sister'.
The end of SOMA didn't come of out nowhere. What happened literally happened several times through the events of the game.
"The train is coming with it's shiny cars, with comfy seats, and wheels of stars. So hush, my little ones, have no fear. The man in the Moon is the engineer."
That drunk!?
Alice: Madness Returns at the end turned so fcking dark....even in comparison with the rest of the game...
You know McGee knows how to use the Alice ip when he makes a twist more disturbing than the game it’s in, and have fit the theme of the game.
It's because the monsters in real life are far worse than any that live in our minds.
these are great twists but I do wish DDLC was on here too... I mean, Yuri's death came out of absolutely nowhere and was awful (not to mention the absolute shock/trauma of seeing Sayori's body omg)
it isn't typhoon it's typhon
Wasn't earth already gone in soma too? Like prey? Forgot from what
Does Jules carry the WhatCulture channel on his back? 🤣 Hey, I'm not complaining lol
Very few of those were disturbing.
Uugh, you forgot Kunikazu Okumura in persona 5-
honestly kinda surprised none of the fear effect stuff is on here
Bumby burned down Alice's home not an orphanage. Good Job on either not paying attention playing or doing proper research.
This video is seriously full of errors and clearly wasn't read over carefully
In soma the girls name is Catherine not sarah
So to understand why true crime was such a jarring twist, it's essentially GTA but you're a loose cannon cop. You can play for hours and never see anything that breaks too far from reality.
Narcosis. You find out that you aren't even the one narrating the story. On top of that you don't even make it to escape pod in time and die wondering the ocean floor with the ghostly phantom for all eternity.
Soma DESTROYED my soul.
I was listening to this while doing something else and I thought that a man had a breakdown named Mike Dawson.
First of all I loelve the channel. 2nd PREY is not a reboot please stop saying this if you watch the no clip documentary Bethesda made Arkane use the name and they created a kick ass game. Please yall watch the no clip docs on PREY and Arkane studios.
Does anyone know what song is playing in the video. It's absolutely banging 👌🏽
