For really long HDMI cables, you wanna go with optic fiber ones. Got a 30 meter one and it works wonders for 4k, HDR etc. No perceptible latency for gaming, either.

For cables that see wear build quality is also very important. Frustratingly many cables (not just HDMI) don't offer any real strain relief. The repeated kinks just above the plugs kills so many cables.
I got a 4k tv a couple months ago, and just built a new PC about a month ago. I've used the tv with my PC a couple times, but stopped becauseI couldn't figure out what the hell was going on that enabling HDR would now make the display cut out. This morning out of boredom I tried using the old heavy duty 25 ft HDMI cable I used to need, but is no longer practical and it worked. I figured I just damaged the new HDMI cable I had bought or something. I was literally getting my stuff to head to the store and buy the cheapest cable they had when I noticed this thumbnail on the techquickie page. Thank you for saving me from buying another junk cable. Thank you Mr. Strieb
I would have liked to see the difference between HDMI versions/standards as well but great video!
It basically takes a PhD to understand the many data protocols associated, audio, video, subtitle signsls, CEC, ARC, HEC, DDC, etc... and how and why they've evolved.
Ugreen is the best on cables, absolutely love the things they make.
thanks for this video.
I used to work in hi end AV and Hi-Fi sales and when digital signals like HDMI with linear PCM and beyond came about, I had to basically have this conversation with every customer I dealt with. Alot of them would refuse to believe it was at all possible to interfere with a binary signal and make even one of its "1's" or "0's" anything other then a carbon copy from transmitter to receiver . We actually had to set up a visual experiment with longer and longer HDMI cables (which at the time cost more then some peoples cars) showing signal lost as the transmission was taken further away from for a common source (through an understandably "EMI" noisy AV show room). the further the signal was taken the more data was lost resulting in complete loss of pixel data that "most" television picture processing units replaced with a generic solid green pixel.
It got worse, as new and higher bandwidth signals came about like the fist "uncompressed" Dolby and DTS signals from "new" Full HD Blu-Ray players Along with "Deep-Colour" (the un-spoken and seldom remembered precursor to HDR, which disappeared with the slow death of Plasma TV which until the very recent introduction of OLED, was the only screen technology with the ability the produce the sadly missed but unforgettable colour tone known as BLACK), so much signal was forced through the HDMI pipes that entire blocks of colour data would be (in some cases) be replaced with this solid green replacement, and complete audio channels would violently pop in and out of existence.
Just like everything with diminishing returns, it took us using over $40000NZD worth or AV gear to sell $1000 to $50000 AV systems to customers with deep pockets, that in all reality would use it to watch analog broadcast's of "Coronation Street", knowing it was better then their neighbors.
Thank's again.
Learned this applies to displayport cables as well. I had a decent one hooked up to my 144hz monitor and my monitor would randomly disable gsync and downclock itself to 85hz. I was about to return the monitor because I thought it was defective but I first decided to buy new cables for it. Once I plugged in that new gold plated displayport cable I never had any issues again.
It’s been proven that the more expensive the HDMI cable is, the more the opposite sex is attracted to you.
Marriage flips that around, though.
Only if he/she is a gamer, though.
Only if you can sell her the HDMI cable, though.
That's why I'm gay.
I think that's an inverse relationship, appropriately.
4:45 minutes. What you want to know and need to know without all the filler and history of video connectors back to 1920. This was one of the most perfect editing jobs I have seen this year on TH-cam.
Just another note, for long runs (beyond 15 meters or so) I would say making the jump to ethernet or fiber optic is the way to go. Purchased a pair of 30 meter fiber optic HDMI cables to run to some projectors and they have been great, pretty much no delay or reduction in quality. Definitely would recommend them, and they are super thin.
HOLY SHIT, FIBER OPTIC HDMI IS REAL
Fibre optic hdmi?!?!? *researches at the speed of light for this item*
Finally a good techquike video
If you want 4K60, make sure it's listed as an HDMI 2.0 or above. If you want 4K60 with HDR, make sure it's HDMI 2.0b or above (you're usually safe if they mention it has HDR support). If you want 4K120 or 8K60, make sure it's HDMI 2.1. If you need 1080p then buy whatever up to and including an HDMI 2.1 cable because they're all backwards comparable and they don't sell HDMI cables that lack the 1080p features you need. The premium vs standard thing is nonsense. I've seen cables advertised as premium that weren't 2.0 and it doesn't guarantee HDR support.
I usually go with Amazon Basics cables for 1080p because they're cheap and they do the job. If I need something higher I buy the cheapest thing with the correct specs and good reviews. For example I needed a 1' HDMI cable to hook my PSVR box up to the PS4 Pro. So I got a 1' HDMI 2.0b cable with good reviews because it needed to be 4K60 with HDR.
Thanks for the video. I have a single HDMI cable that I swap between a second monitor and a TV, and I’m also going to be repositioning my TV and will need a longer cable so this helps.

Mmm, should probably have mentioned active and fibre optic cables for those who need long runs.
I've got a cheap one about 1 year ago, when i unplugged it one day the cable came but the plug was stuck in the graphics cards HDMI socket. I think build quality is the most important since these cable are usually good enough.
TL;DW - 3 HDMI standards:
Standard Speed - up to 1.2
High Speed - v1.3 - 2.0b
Ultra Speed - v2.1 (really only needed for displaying 8K60/4K120 with non DSC signals)
Wrong. Speed rating is not related to version features.
Plenty of premium high speed cables support all or some of the new features of HDMI 2.1 such as ALLM, VRR, eARC, QFT, QMS.
I believe the main comment is wrong and the comment below me is wrong, but I'm too lazy to actually explain why I think they are both wrong because I need sleep.

@@IReallyWantThisName read the comment again and enlighten yourself my dude.
Ultra Speed - introduced with v2.1
Really only needed for displaying 8K60/4K120 full chroma when no display stream compression.
Said nothing about the non bandwidth related feature set of v2.1 being restricted to Ultra Speed spec.
Those features are tied to the protocol of v2.1 and dependent on the display and device communicating on what's available and supported.

1:08 “Gopher cables”
I recently bought a fiber optics HDMI cable. This cable introduces no lag when doing long runs of HDMI like in my case of 20 meters.
A common misconception. A fiber cable is not "faster" than a copper cable. Light and electrical energy are the same thing. Light is simply very, very, high frequency electrical energy. Look at the EM spectrum chart. Bottom is audio, top is Xrays and Gamma rays with light in the upper 3/4 of the scale. And they both obey the laws of propagation velocity, which is 66-68% the speed of light when traveling through matter - like copper or glass. In fact the fiber cable is actually a bit slower by several nanoseconds as the conversion from electrical to optical and back adds propagation delay.

Cable gauge also plays a role in wire resistivity. Those thicker cables are worse not because they don't bend, but because the low power signal being pushed through is meeting higher resistance (at least at longer lengths).
I had a major difference when I switched my USB type B cable for my audio interface with a UGreen cable. I used to get signal noise after 70% gain, now I get zero signal noise at 100% gain.

Gold sucks for tools!!
@Chrix but gold tools are the fastest for mining
Even just normally speaking, I question it, cause just like Minecraft, gold is a really soft metal, so I'm not sure how that'd help longevity at all.
@@TotemoGaijin Gold is often used in circuit boards of computers, smartphones and other electronics for their ability to stand up to corrosion. If you live in an area with high humidity, you might consider a gold HDMI cable. The gold plating will protect the connectors and prevent corrosion much better than regular cables.
