Congratulations on your graduation. Your future plans will fall into place. Painting pole tips: Clean them thoroughly first, or your efforts will be wasted. Prop them on sawhorses or the like so you don’t have to bend down or over them too much, and use an old stool when possible to sit. It’s a lengthy job. Only paint in a well-ventilated area. First paint them with primer and let dry. Topcoat should be a durable high-gloss outdoor paint. I’ll paint as my charger to use, but it lasts a lot longer. Remember that you can’t put an oil base topcoat over a water-based primer coat. You have to pick either water-based or will best and stick with it. Oil-base paint is horrible when it comes to cleaning your brushes. If you want to add stripes to your poles, use masking tape or the like to delineate the area you’re going to paint a second color. Makes it lots easier to stay within the lines that way. Don’t take the tape off until the paint is thoroughly dry, though.
“Will best” = oil based. The point is, oil based paint is harder to use but lasts longer. I forgot to add that you should clean out your brushes immediately after you are finished and not let them sit or else you will be buying new brushes quite often. That is expensive. Also, if you are painting in an area that you care what the floor looks like, is the drop cloth. Any cheap one will do. Wear some old clothes and shoes that you never plan to do anything else with but the painting. It is guaranteed that the paint will get all over your clothes, your shoes, and you. Wear a handkerchief over your hair to protect it some. Keep a rag handy to wipe your hands or, better yet, wear thin plastic disposable gloves to spare your hands and nails. It’s worth the extra bother, believe me. Nine-tenths of painting is getting ready and cleaning up. If you don’t do that right, you will hate everything about painting. The painting itself is not that hard. It’s helpful to have several sizes of brushes. You’ll need a big brush to cover large areas or else you will be there for hours. You’ll need a small brush for detailing and to cover up small mistakes.

Painting poles is easy don't worry. Make sure you suspend the poles on like sawhorses or something, wrap the sawhorses with rags because if you don't it leaves marks in the new paint where the edges dig into the poles, and if you're masking, get good quality masking tape. I just painted my poles, it was satisfying :)
