Wow these tails cam out soooooo friggin clean. I gotta say that clear is the best on the market. I've used it before on paint projects and have never been disappointed with the results. great videos!
Thanks for the kind words and the reassurance on the clear coat👍 so far both the ae86 tails and evo headlights look just as good as the day I cleared them. I am hoping they don't fade or chip in the long term, but so far so good! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel 👍😎
Dude, nice!! Love the ingenuity with the epoxy and inexpensive pigments! I've worked with VHT Niteshades quite a bit, and I know the look you're going for. Two light coats, allow to cure, then use a DA polisher with a microfiber pad and Meguiar's Compound. Some of the tint will compound out, but leave it a shade or two darker than you want it. After compounding, wet sand with 2000 grit, clean, and clearcoat. It'll give that sweet, "stock appearance" tint. Hope this helps! :)
I’ve been dealing with this a while. UV made them what they are and proves to be the culprit to many repairs. The night shade rattle can suck. 2k clear with black tint to preference. JB weld contractor pack with a bondo applicator sanded. The plastic is brittle and flex’s at pressure, repaired squire a few in my days. Can’t justify taillights that cost more than the car. Great video, keep it coming.
Watching all your vids now! One thing you can do, though it requires a spray gun and compressor is mix clearcoat with black paint in order to dilute the colour to get the right shade for tinting.
done this a lot on headlights / taillights on cars ive flipped. its amazing how a little spare time and some sandpaper can really transform something. I have never done the epoxy fix you did and thats really cool. might have to give that a whirl! excellent video man. those look amazing
el ponciaw hahaha thanks man. Doing all of these projects myself and learning as I go, almost always leads to problems of some kind. el ponciaw hahaha I know that feeling all to well. I was scared to sand these tails, which were already in really bad shape! My evos headlights are awful, they are super oxidized and I am wanting to do this to them next. I'll probably make a vid on that as well. Still a little hesitant about sanding the evo headlights, but if the finish turns out like the 86s tails, I'll be super happy haha. How did yours turn out?
Thanks for watching! Yup I try to show the good and bad because everyone makes mistakes. I'm just happy to see how good they turned out, even though I ran into problems along the way. Thanks for tuning in!
@@TheBSRecord cool. I just purchased a mazda 626 coupe that should arrive in a few days time (transporter, as its half way across the country in a pandemic) and one thing i need to fix is a crack in the lights. I will look out for that clearcoat and see if we can get it here in europe

I definitely want to try what you suggested on a future set but I have to get better with a paint gun before trying. Thanks for watching and commenting, I love hearing feedback from the viewers!
@@TheBSRecord Yeah, I've tried getting a slight smoked look to tail lights before but NiteShades is temperamental... Good to hear the tail lights are still going strong.

Thanks for the vid. It was very helpful. Could you confirm that the cracks were filled after the clear coat ? I couldn’t see it on the close up. Thanks
Thanks man! I filled the cracks first and applied the clear coat after. The clearcoat helped fill any imperfections so it looks super smooth. You cannot feel the cracks anymore 👍

Dang that sucks, I know the feeling. My mom backed into my Evo and left a nice scrap all the way down the driver's side. Ughhhhh I was so mad but it was my mom, I can't be too mad at her! Lol 😂
Great job! But Highly recommend not spaying tint. Instead wrap in tinted film. It's consistant and removable if you want to change later. Plus it doubles as a rock guard. That clear is the bomb! Used it many times to do fenders and smaller projects, even did whole bumper covers before. You only have 24hrs to use it after mixing so make sure you have enough project to use all of it and not waste it as it's $22 a can on Amazon. I always dust the 1st coat on and then go a lil heavier the following passes.
Thanks for the comment and suggestion! After using the VHT night shades, I would probably suggest the same. Tinted film seems like a great option, and it removable. My only worry would be the tint de-laminating or flaking off. I guess one could say the same for paint if it isn't prepped and applied right. That clear coat is magic in a can! It's crazy to see how far aerosol paints have come! Thanks for tuning into the channel, hope you are enjoying the content!
from the outside, yes. If the spider cracks happened from inside, the light it will be much more difficult to repair. Most of the spider cracks on mine were from the inside of the lens. Its looks better, but I can still see some of them. Hope this helps!

I'm mostly just curious about the spiderweb like cracks. I have a 1988 Honda Accord hatchback that looks very similar, and has a fairly large region that is just filled with little internal cracks and I don't know how to fix it and you cannot find the *hatchback* tail lights for that year anywhere for sale...
This is brilliant. I've been thinking of making my own lenses for my Cressidas corner lenses that always eat rocks. I want to add protectors for em I think. Possibly mix the walmart paint with some sort of clear coat in order to make the walmart paint closer to the correct color.
Thanks for the kind words, and that is definitly an option. I would be worried how the vinyl would hold up to the elements though. Thanks for watching!
pprotory yeah your probably right, I didn't see any at the place I was at when buying the paint unfortunately. I do think however, if I mixed less paint and more epoxy, it would have come out a lot more transparent. Oh well, hopefully someone can try the same thing with transparent paint and let me know how it turned out. Thanks for watching!
No problem, glad you liked it and happy to see you are going to try it on yours as well. If you decide to try and tint them, make sure you hold the Niteshades can high above the tails to avoid streaking, which is what happened to mine. Nightshades is sort of hard to work with, if it's your first time using it lol. Goodluck and let me know if you run into any problems or have any questions.
Thanks man will do, i just got another set of the kouki coupe redlines! so I wanna freshen them up. Good tip on the night shades! Where you located? I travel a lot maybe we can collaborate if I am in your city
Nice! good luck with freshening them up. I still need to wet sand the clear on my tails and get that super gloss, mirror finish. I'm located in KY, if you are ever near by, let me know!
sucks it didn't work out as you originally planned, they still look super good though. my favorite 86 taillights are the kouki notchback levin taillights, the zenki ones are nice too. great video as always!

TheBSRecord I just got some daytime running light lenses for my 240 but they are damaged. Guy I got them from didn't say they were damaged but you know people these days. So I am looking for a solution. Your video gave me some ideas of where to start.

ae86 - sr5 to gts conversion haha for sure, so much sanding. Its great when it all comes together, even if it wasn't what I was originally expecting. Still loved the results though! Thanks for watching and the comment, I need to kick it into gear and catch up to you and your progress haha
can i suggest that you go ta a rc shop and pick up some tamiya smoke paint fo rc bodies. its ment fir plastic and it is more of a bronze color. worked really good on my friends 240zx coupe.
Also did you put the tape behind the lens or on top? I am confused rn and really need to do this to my car as a piece of it has broken off at the edge.
The tape was just clear packaging tape. I used the tape from the outside to create a "wall" and rebuild the chipped piece with epoxy. I hope this helps, sorry for the late reply
How are your tail lights now? I’m only asking because you didn’t use any plastic primer before your clear coat. Not using plastic primer which is clear, will result in any clear coat pealing off.
Wavey Davey they look just as good as the day I sprayed them. I have even applied tape to the clear coat and then pulled the tape up to make sure the clear wouldn't delaminate. I see where you are coming from with the plastic primer, but I don't think it is a necessary step, as long as the plastic is preped and clean properly before paint. I'll let you know if it ever starts delaminating and will update this video to let others know too. Thanks for watching and the support!
I wanted to shave the taillights fully for that clean, sleak look. I intentionally sanded down all the raised areas to achieve this. You could always keep those raised areas, just be carefully sanding around them. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Well done! Being dutch (always have something to say 😇🤣) remember watching the shows on discovery with chip foose, perhaps an idea to sand the clear slightly to remove the last bit of orange peel and buff/polish it to mirror finish 😎
Hey man my car i just bought some used taillights not knowing a piece was broken off at the edge and has scratches on it. Can i use the epoxy as the lens ? It’s clear lens would i just need regular epoxy and tape on the edge?
Well that settles it! With how the clear on the tails worked out, you HAVE to paint the car yourself! Side note: I really hope you take this type of amazing attention to detail to the mechanics of the car as well. Much too often I see builds do amazing engine work with terrible body work, or amazing body work with average mechanics. Maybe a person has to have super human patience and above average financial resources to do both. Corners usually have to be cut in one way or another. But I really hope you keep this pace up and do something like build your own mega-squirt ECU, and find real motorcycle itb's, or set your own backlash on the LSD and weld your strut inserts. I see a lot of my own journey in this and as a result I think I'm going to take apart my 86 and do the body work the right way, I focused on the mechanics and lost energy by the time I got to the body. So all I'm saying is if this thing leaves the garage with a open diff, rear drums, and stock ECU, I'll cry and punch a little kid, which pretty much makes you an accomplice to child abuse...just saying.
+Rii hahahaha yes I plan to offer just as much attention to detail as I have with the body to the mechanics. I am a strong believer in "do it right the first time". With that being said I will be learning everything as I go, so it will take some time. However, I do plan (once it's painted) to throw a seat in, taillights/ headlights, and the suspension back on and whip it around the neighborhood for a couple hours hahaha. I have to get it back on the road for a couple hours just for sanity sake. Don't worry though, I plan on rebuilding a smallport 4age from the ground up with either itbs or side draft carbs. Maybe an engine bay tuck too 👍

Super,, you realy made the lichts !!!!!!!!!!!!1
very nice man they look like new!
JJ Garage thanks man, they turned out looking great, I was so excited when I walked out into the garage the next day haha. Thanks for watching!
I would use respirator all the time.
Even when sanding products down is unhealthy just saying ;)
Good luck with your project. :)
Great advice, thanks for watching 👍
GREAT JOB!!
This is brilliant. I've been thinking of making my own lenses for my Cressidas corner lenses that always eat rocks. I want to add protectors for em I think. Possibly mix the walmart paint with some sort of clear coat in order to make the walmart paint closer to the correct color.
looks great
So what did you do to actually repair the crack?
For the crack I used a dremel widen it, then filled the void with clear epoxy. Sand and clear 👍 thanks for watching!
When getting the orange peel out of the clear coat, what grit did you use? I assume wetsand, of course.
Looks great. Worse case you can just use some smoked vinyl to achieve the look you're looking for 👍🏻
Thanks for the kind words, and that is definitly an option. I would be worried how the vinyl would hold up to the elements though. Thanks for watching!
Should have used transparent paint to tint the epoxy. Available at most arts and crafts stores.
pprotory yeah your probably right, I didn't see any at the place I was at when buying the paint unfortunately. I do think however, if I mixed less paint and more epoxy, it would have come out a lot more transparent. Oh well, hopefully someone can try the same thing with transparent paint and let me know how it turned out. Thanks for watching!
I've seen other videos they used food color lol
this is a great video! i gotta do this to mine as well.
I am going to do this and make a video of me trying these on mine! thanks for the great video bro!
I'm located in KY, if you are ever near by, let me know!
sucks it didn't work out as you originally planned, they still look super good though. my favorite 86 taillights are the kouki notchback levin taillights, the zenki ones are nice too. great video as always!
thanks yeah I am super pleased with how they turned out. Too bad the tinting didn't quite work out but its all good, I think I might like this finish better anyways haha. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Good job!
Thanks!
Great job done
Thanks a lot!
Wow dude, very good work.
Thanks a lot man, I appreciate the love!
TheBSRecord I just got some daytime running light lenses for my 240 but they are damaged. Guy I got them from didn't say they were damaged but you know people these days. So I am looking for a solution. Your video gave me some ideas of where to start.
Do you know if the clear coat product is anti-yellow and/or has UV protection?
Yes it does, that is one of the main reasons why I went with that paint. Goodluck on your project! 😁👍
Why you not use clear food coloring
You did an excellent job! I restored the ones on mine and I was just like you with my reaction....it's great to put in the time and effort and have a great payoff like that. Nice job. (Now part of the notification squad)
ae86 - sr5 to gts conversion haha for sure, so much sanding. Its great when it all comes together, even if it wasn't what I was originally expecting. Still loved the results though! Thanks for watching and the comment, I need to kick it into gear and catch up to you and your progress haha
Grate job man ❤
Looks great
Keep up the great job!!! 👍👍👍👍
Thanks!
Will do!
O resultado final ficou ótimo, parabéns!!!
obrigado!
I wonder how well this would work for my 85 RX7. Both mine have cracks in them and I can't afford to spend $550 on tail lights
If they were my tail lights I would give it a go. They are already cracked, so its worth a shot!
I'm buying $500 tail lights to do this on 😂😂😂
can i suggest that you go ta a rc shop and pick up some tamiya smoke paint fo rc bodies. its ment fir plastic and it is more of a bronze color. worked really good on my friends 240zx coupe.
I've never heard of the stuff but I will check it out. I'm still wanting to do something with my evo tail lights too, maybe this could be an option.
+TheBSRecord the olny thing is the cans are small but it doesnt take much
Another question: is the tape you used a special kind of tape or can you use any kind of tape?
Great watch!
Glad you enjoyed!!
I need to do this on my Celica
w8 why would u not take thinner instead of sandpaper n scratch down all the toyota/teq logos?
I wanted to shave the taillights fully for that clean, sleak look. I intentionally sanded down all the raised areas to achieve this. You could always keep those raised areas, just be carefully sanding around them. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Well done! Being dutch (always have something to say 😇🤣) remember watching the shows on discovery with chip foose, perhaps an idea to sand the clear slightly to remove the last bit of orange peel and buff/polish it to mirror finish 😎
Thanks for watching!! Definitly, I'll buff them, I just have to get the car finished first 🤣
Hey man my car i just bought some used taillights not knowing a piece was broken off at the edge and has scratches on it. Can i use the epoxy as the lens ? It’s clear lens would i just need regular epoxy and tape on the edge?
It depends on how big the piece is. It seemed to work great for my application.
What is the name of that paint? What kind of paint is it please?
The clear coat or the translucent black paint?
Black translucent paint: VHT Nightshade
Clear coat: spray max 2k 368 0061
Maybe an engine bay tuck too 👍
Awesome job......
Thanks a lot! 😎👍
Great video bro! :)
Thanks a lot! Glad you liked it!
