Curling iron repair - Thyristor diagnosis and replacement - Healing Bench #10

This hair curling iron was working but the tip was not heating up so I opened it up to inspect and did a repair. Check out the full process so you can know how to deal and inspect similar issues in the future as many other appliances might work in the same way.
The "healing bench" is a series of videos where I try to repair electronic devices of a different kind. Some are my own, some from friends and I explore them to learn their principle of operation and possibly fix it so it can have another life.

I am having the same problem in Remington hair curler. It's not heating up. According to your advice, I will change the microcontroller resistance. I'll also let you know later on. Let's see, what happens.

I'm not sure how you can change the microcontroller resistance but whatever you do, be careful. The device in question in my case is called s thyristor. It had nothing to do with the microcontroller as it was working OK.

Wish you had shown how to test the thyristor...

It usually fails either all contacts open circuit or dead short. Otherwise it has like diode bridge in between.

@@TasteTheCode I wrote that because I've got one that doesn't beep but shows a value (1890) on continuity testing but nothing when I put the multimeter on 2000 Ohms setting. So not being a specialist, I'm a bit puzzled.

That's too bad. Check with any of your friends. Someone might be into electronics and can try to diagnose what is wrong with it. Last option is to take it to a repair shop.

No idea. You can't see it on the video but there is a resin blob under the screen that covers the chip.

That is a typical resistive heating element. Please be careful with it as the mains voltage runs through it.
