Is Olympus Worth Buying Into in 2022?

  • Olympus sold their camera division, but still released the OM-1 and 150-400mm f4.5 pro lens. The OM-1 was a little underwhelming in today's world. Would you really put down a lot of money with one of their pro lenses with their current bodies like the EM1 III and OM1? Today we test the 300mm f4 pro prime wildlife lens with the EM1 III. Is it much better than the little 75-300mm? How's the manual focus clutch, too sensitive? Slow motion. 120fps.

      The Olympus 300mm f4 and OM-1 is 200 grams heavier than a Nikon 400mm 4.5 with a Z6/Z7ii.

    • @tonigenes5816
      @tonigenes5816 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Z6/Z7 are not PRO bodies and the autofocus performance is behind OM-1.
      And 400mm on FF will not give you the same reach unless you mount an TC on it.
      Compare OM-1 to Z9, and then OM-1 will make sense from some points of view.

    • @thephotoyak
      @thephotoyak ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tonigenes5816 it depends what you need it to do, but I know which one I would choose.
      And the Olympus does not have more reach. A Z7ii "cropped" to 600mm is still a 20 MP image, the same as the Olympus, there will be a difference in IQ though, and it will swing 400mm 4.5.

    • @tonigenes5816
      @tonigenes5816 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you crop from Z7 you loose the sensor advantage and then OM-1 has all the advantages : much better autofocus, cheaper, more robust, more fps, more functions. For wildlife OM-1 is the best choice, while for landscape Z7 would be the best choice. As you said, personal needs matters here.

    You can assign the Peaking option on a button and turn it on/off any time. Olympus actually put several buttons you can customize on the M1 series cameras, just pick one. And normally (I didn't have Mark III, but it's most likely the same on that model too), if press and hold that assigned button, it's a shortcut for the submenu of the given function. For peaking that would be the color and intensity of it.

    I mostly do medium and large format analog film photography nowadays, but Olympus is my brand for digital, and I don't miss anything.
    If you like to venture into serious macro, you should try Olympus' TG-6 sometime. If you can overcome the small sensor, there is no better macro solution on the market below 5,000 USD. Up to 7:1 macro enlargement, automatic in camera photo bracketing and stacking (very useful with macro), up to 120 fps in FHD (and 240 in SD), 4K, waterproof up to 15 m, Raw and Jpg, the same processor as the M1X, etc. Plus it serves very well as a pocket sized point and shoot and doubles as an action cam. To me, it is all what I need as a digital camera. I now only use my Pen-F to scan negatives and positives with its high-res mode. When I want to create professional pics, I use my analog cameras, for everything else the TG-6 is all I need.

    Sadly , my EM10 Mkii is capable of doing all that I need a camera to do and my phone compliments it at the wide end .
    I gave my firmer dslr to one of my of nephews as he was thinking of taking up photography and I wanted him to have something useful to help him discover his favourite focal length and then have an idea of which lenses he liked , match those to s camera system that complimented the lens choice and not box that operates the glass

    Full frame shooter here. Not a wildlife/sport photographer, so I don't use something big and heavy like 150-600. 70-200 is the heaviest I use, usually for event documentation. And also not a portrait shooter, so I don't really care about super thin DoF.
    Once a senior photographer showed me how he could fit 3 MFT bodies + 6 lenses inside his camera bag and overall still felt reasonably lightweight. Obviously I can't do the same with FF system. I definitely like the idea of having smaller camera for daily use. Hmmm.... :D

The sharpness is still quite nice even with the teleconverter, but I would like to have more light so I don't have to turn up the ISO so much since I'm using fast shutter speeds in photos. That's what this lens is for. Even if you're shooting 120 fps video, that's still just 1/240 shutter speed with the 180° shutter rule. My E-M1 Mark II only goes up to 60 fps. I am looking for bird photos where the shutter is 1/500 or, ideally, even faster. So, every bit of light helps, and that's why you want this f4 lens.

    With IS in video with 600mm eqivalent I honestly think you expect something no camera can provide. It being lightweight is not helping. If you try to stan still while watching on something other than what your eyes would see, even if your hands are still, your frame will sway. It is just physiology. If you use stills-oriented IS you end up with jerks. If you use video-oriented IS you end up with sway or wobble. Either way it will make you sick. Either you get seizure or nausea. Sync IS is optimized for photos so it is seizure. But maybe there is some other setting of IS?

    The 300mm lens works better if you disable the manual clutch in camera body and then set MF to On in camera then the CAF menu goes to CAF+M, you then have CAF with manual focus over ride, no need to push the focus ring into the manual focus position.

    • @FortressofSound
      @FortressofSound ปีที่แล้ว

      How are you doing this? Not how my Em1 mk2 reacts. In video mode, CAF doesn't have the MF option. Only by switching the clutch can you do manual & auto focus while recording.

    When are you going to try out the GH-6? We know the AF is crap; but you like to focus pull anyway. And the stabilization is likely the best around.
    EDIT: I just got to where you said you're trying to get your hands on a GH-6. That will be a must-see series. Then, the R7. That may be even harder to find right now.

      John the AF will surprise him in real world use with native lenses. It is a bulky beast for a M43 camera, but it's 4k 120 is top of the line, and the colors are spot on. He would really enjoy the camera IMO. Also yes, easily the best handheld IBIS available IMO.

      @@JohnDrummondPhoto Yes. I have a massive lumix family. So that does put me in fanboy territory... I don't shoot wildlife (except my dog ) so I can't say for sure how it would do. In 60fps the AF in one area plus is pretty solid and fast. 120fps definitely slows the af down some, but the quality is outstanding.
      The IBIS while panning handheld is by far the best I have seen or used. Also great colors.
      Dynamic range and noise are it's biggest problems vs Sony and Panny full framers. Has about the same dynamic range as an R6. Only talking about video BTW. Battery life is also not great in 4k 120 or prores modes...
      Really fun camera. I do think it loses out to the Xh2s, but the lens selection is just so much better for m43.

The OM1 is a VERY good option for a lot of things. I really don’t care if a Porsche is faster than my Land Rover Defender! They have different purposes! Those comparisons are pointless!

    For photo, there is a huge IQ diference between 300mm F/4.0 and not only 75-300, but also the two 100-400mm lenses with m4/3 mount.
    For 4k video, camera will downsize the images, so IQ differences will become smaller, although is still visible easy.
    So yes, video is more forgiving with weak lenses.

    I have this setup. My OM-1's video is worse than my G9 except for when recording 4K24/30 in H265. All the H264 modes (4K60) look pixelated. I only shoot in 4K24. In that mode, it delivers better results than the G9's 4K24, despite having smaller file sizes (H265 more efficient).
    It's mostly a stills oriented camera that takes really good 4K24 (when shooting H265), but nothing more. For my standards, nothing is usable within the H264 modes. The 1080 also sucks.

    I finally joined the Sony E-Mount system with the Sony A6100. Had a super tight budget, perfect for a tech channel. The camera as well is hard to get as it's not even avaliable most of the time.
    At 66990 INR(~850usd) it was better than M6ii(more expensive), Z30 at the same price, XT200, M50(I and II) at cheaper price. XE-4 body only was at first available at the same price as A6100 with kit lens, and it was my perfect choice, but for some reason Fuji increased the body only price by almost 100usd!!! Deal breaker.
    Setting up the camera, and I'm already satisfied. Super crisp 4k, bullet proof AF, flip screen, clean HDMI out, usb charging. That's all!
