    For those of us who prefer a lighter, but sophisticated kit, thanks for giving MFT a chance. I look forward to your final impressions of the OM-1 and the format in general.

      The OM-1 is fantastic, it offers features none of the competitors has. For animals in action that is specially the ProCaptureSH2 mode. - The animal and eye detection is at least as good as the one of the Sony a1. The M.Zuiko lenses outer worldly good. Honestly, I don’t understand why Olympus ditched the camera section. However, the new company OM Systems did an awesome introduction with the OM-1.

      It seems like MFT has moved in the direction of high quality but hefty gear. The cameras and lenses don't seem all that much smaller than the competition. The om-1 is basically the same size as an r7

    • @brucegraner5901
      @brucegraner5901 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Reloading20 I think that's a good observation. I just rented an R7 and found my Lumix G9 more refined across the board, BUT, an R7 Mark 2 with some of its rough edges smoothed out and that 33-meg sensor, combined with the 100-500 zoom, would be a very serious lightweight contender, maybe a replacement for the much respected Nikon D500. The R7 has eye-track while my G9 is more face-tracking but I was surprised how often the R7 told me it was locked on the eyes of a bird when it actually had the wing. The Lumix 100-400mm is a very sharp lens but not as smooth as Canon or Nikon glass but it is lighter than the Canon zoom and at least a grand less expensive plus I really like the ergonomics of the G9 which was way ahead of its time in 2018. If Lumix can improve the G9 even as half as much with the G9 Mark 2 it would be a camera worth waiting for.

    • @Reloading20

      @@richardfink7666 like I mentioned, many mft lenses aren't much smaller, if they even are smaller, than the comparable rf lenses.

    This was excellent Duade, I loved it.

Have booked a trip to O'Reilly's with the two Mad Photographer's in September but we are going to extend our stay to three weeks total ,to have a good look around in the back blocks. Its really nice to see you having fun with MFT. I think its still an underapreciated system and your MFT-videos capture exactly why most of the MFT-users love their system: Its light, its small, it has great lens qualitiy and most imortant: its just a lot of fun to use. It would be nice to see some more MFT-content of you in the future.

    I have been using this lens with EM1 MK II and its a killer combination. As others have said, this performs extremely well with 1.4tc while maintaining the image quality. It’s nice of you to show m43 gear here Duade as they have some pro level gear with very low price which might help a lot of hobbyist or entry level photographers, even help others who are thinking of making the switch. I switched from Nikon 2 years ago and have never been happier. I even had few images do well in international photography competition so image quality wise there are no issues at all.

    The absolute best photography videos on TH-cam are your out-in-the-field sessions! I could watch them for hours on end. Not only do you give us useful information in regards to the particular equipment, you also provide a fantastic entertainment element. Love how you always make the best of every situation- switching from birds to landscape and back as the situations warrant.
    As for the weather conditions on this kind of day, I actually prefer the diffused lighting created by clouds and limited fog. This helps me to keep from blowing out the highlights and improve the fine details of the white plumage of Egrets or other brightly colored water birds. Color enhancement/saturation can always be done in post editing. Of course, a warm ray of sunlight at daybreak or at sunset is always a nice touch but it doesn't always work out that way.

    • @Duade

      Thanks mate, you are too kind, I too enjoy the infield videos, but they can be boom or bust if there are not birds about. Yes, overcast can be great as you can shoot all day, works well for bush birds. I struggle a bit with water birds as the water takes on a white reflection which can be hard to deal with. Have fun out there, Cheers, Duade

    No need to apologise for wonderful landscape shots. Getting into nature is the whole point of the exercise, so why not record it. A desire to get a photographic record of birds I see has morphed into a growing love of photography in general and in particular birds in landscape. I have read many reviews of the Olympus 100-400 and 300 f4 but still look forward to yours. My M.Zuiko 75-300 does a great job for the price and is so portable, but too often I find myself wishing for greater reach especially with small birds.

    Duade I really enjoyed the beautiful subdued winter light and tones and it looks like you did too! So much creativity on offer with the mist/fog and wonderful to see many moody silhouette shots. Trees and underrated and make great subjects in mist/fog conditions like this. That foggy sunrise on the hill reminded me so much of rural NZ this time of year (and the Hutt Valley river valley I live in). The sunrise Grebe shots are a delight and so beautiful in that light. Impressive subject tracking and focus on the Cockatoo and Egrets inflight Duade. An impressive and versatile package with the OM-1 and 300mm F4 coupled with the crop factor. Great to see the OM-1 name live on from the original film camera of the same name 50 odd years ago. A really enjoyable winter landscape and wildlife experience and your enjoyment in the field was infectious! Thanks as always mate.

    Great video here Duade that highlights a number of things........
    1: you'll always get better images if you get out early and scout your location and intended subjects behavior and movements, rather than staying at home and missing the best light and activity.
    2: take "the blinkers" off and immerse yourself in your surroundings , it's amazing what else you might observe.
    3: be prepared.......make sure you've got all your camera gear ready to go, wear suitable clothing, and experiment with different POV and heights etc.
    You also amaze me with how quickly you seem to adapt to different equipment, formats etc. The Olympus gear certainly looks the goods and so compact too!!
    I will be interested in what Canon reports on your R7...........hopefully something that is isolated to just yours!

    It is fun to watch how much you enjoy your "job". I saw the landscapes behind you, and was screaming at my laptop. Then, you noticed too and produced some enviable landscape images. Blue gums make great subjects. How did it feel getting great shots _without_ lying in the mud? What are the four-color blue-ish bands across the top of the trees on the road? And sulfur-headed cockatoos, I think they are my favorite bird ever.

I moved from Canon 90D to R5, missed crop factor but after Canon stopped Sigma I cancelled my R7 order (it is too compromised too) and was thinking the ON1 with that very lens might be the perfect accompanying body (together the cost less than a 500/600mm f/4 lens for the canon and seem to get great results.

    Really pleased you are giving the OM1 and 300mm f4 a crack. It is the kit I have been using for a while as it is so good, so light and has some awesome features. I also have the Canon R5 and 100-500 and find I almost always use the OM1 as the Procapture and in-camera image stacking has transformed my photography. Despite any prejudice about low light performance, my default ISO is 1600 and I find that even 12800 is usable as long as you don't underexpose and use DXO to tackle noise.

I used to own the Sony a1 and multiple g master lens but then I tried the OM1 and the 300mm combo and I was hooked! I find myself using the 1.4x teleconverter quite often to give myself 840mm range and the image quality with the teleconverter is still exceptional! Autofocus performance is affected slightly, though. If you choose to get the 1.4x teleconverter, I’d love if you could do a review on it! Lastly, would be really cool if you could get your hands on the Olympus 150-400 review to do a review on it with the OM1:) just some ideas

    This was fun, obviously you thought so as well! It's so nice see someone almost giggling by delight over 1) not getting overrun by a car while 2) getting an excellent Bird & Landscape combo photo😂
    On the serious side: I wish I had more money, so I could get one of these camera systems as well, either Olympus or the Fuji. I don't remember if Fuji is a micro as well or if it's 1:6 and I don't intend to check it out before I post this comment🙄
    Sadly, it isn't only a question of funding, it's also the problem with fitting *all* that gear (not gonna let all the Canon stuff go!) into ONE cabin-approved bag for travel, and then manage to get everything on my person when out in the field...
    It seems I have to choose, then stay the course, in real life.And I already chose The Canon Way, so here I am, condemned to feel the forever-curiosity-itch about those green grasses on the other side of the fence...

    I bought this lens when it first came out and paired it with an EM1 mark2. I really loved the combo for bird stills, but I'm primarily a videographer, so traded that lens in for a Sigma 150-600 Contemp, Metabones speedbooster and some cash and put them on a Panasonic GH5. The versatility of that Sigma lens far outweighs the sweet size and performance of the Oly 300mm f4. The Oly was razor sharp, but the Sigma is at least knife sharp, too...I still think the best bargain in long-tele zoom lenses ever. Thanks, Duade. Another sweet video.

    Great video, really happy to see you giving the Ollie gear a go, Duade.
    I’m a Nikon guy but, not wanting to buy a Z9 and 400mm 2.8, about a year ago I bought the OM1 + 150-400 4.5 TC pro combo for birds and wildlife. And I was blown away. The full frame fanboys have no idea how the OM1 leaves their gear in the dust, from AI detection to frame rates (raw) to pro-capture (also in raw) to live ND etc.
    I know. I recently upgraded my D850 and Z6ii to a Z8, which works great with my 500mm 5.6 pf lens. But, even with Nikons latest and greatest features, it doesn’t keep up with my OM1.
    As much as I love my 150-400 (up to 1000mm ffe reach!!) I think the 300 may be their most versatile and sharp wildlife option. There used to be a 300 2.8 - it would be an amazing - although pricey - choice if they brought out a new version.
    Looking forward to your full reviews, including the compromises of M43 - which IMO are dwarfed by the advantages.

      Thanks for sharing your experience, Brian, yes so far very good, the only thing I am struggling with a little bit is the shadow noise at higher ISO which is to be expected. The AF is also very good for BIF etc but like most mirrorless can get confused at times by reeds and grass etc. If you have time what AF settings are you using? Cheers, Duade

    • @brianlemke6017
      @brianlemke6017 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Duade pretty simple for me. I find bird AI detect with all focus points selected (tracking off) picks up the bird quickly and locks on most of the time. I also have the AEL function switch next to the AF-on button programmed to toggle between all points and single point (for when the bird is in the bushes or against a tricky background). The AEL button itself is programmed to turn bird AI on and off or when pressed, to scroll to animal, planes, trains etc. On the lens I use the memory set button to set a preset distance and then the lens function buttons to recall it.
      I have my standard bird settings saved as C1 on the top dial, animal settings as C2, high res as C3 and bird pro-capture settings as C4. Each of those gives me a set starting point I know,then I adjust from there. Looking forward to hear what works best for you.
      And yes, the low light, high ISO situations are the trickiest. That’s why I think a 300 2.8 would be an amazing high end telephoto for this system. Cheers, and keep up your work please. Love your enthusiasm.

    • @alandunn4459
      @alandunn4459 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      100-400 is great but doesn't crop as well as the 300 f4. You really notice the quality of the 300 f4 compared to the 100-400 when your target is 50 metres or more away.

    Thanks for taking the time to show us all these types of videos we really appreciate it. I know it's a lot of work! I switched to micro four thirds last year after going through all full frame systems and apsc. Never in a million years would I have thought I would be an Olympus or Pansonic guy but here I am. There's something about the system that is just fun, not to mention portable. Obviously in many situations a larger sensor is better but I'm not a pro wedding or nature photographer and just like to have fun. But I will say there's no drawbacks for any of my landscape photography with M43. I like more depth of field without worrying about diffraction because I can just go to F11 and get F22 DOF. Just plain fun cameras, especially for video work as well. People don't understand until they try it, unless of course they use insane shallow depth of field as a crutch to make up for weak composition for portraits and such. But then again try out the Olympus 75mm 1.8 and it's bokeh city, if that's your thing. So many affordable lenses to experiment with.

      Thanks for taking the time to comment and great to hear you are enjoying your kit, I agree it has a fun element to it that is for sure. I am struggling a little bit with shadow noise and higher ISO but that is to be expected from a smaller sensor. I look forward to using it more. Cheers, Duade

    Really enjoy that opening landscape shot Duade! The Whistling Kites too! ! I'm now finally learning to do those little things like taking advantage of a lighting scenario and gaining the eye for what to shoot; and when to shoot it. Starting to shoot more landscapes really opened my eyes on how to better compose my wildlife shots too.
    Also, that wetland looks seriously incredible for bird and nature photography. Reminds me very much of a huge marsh I go to which used to be a channel of the Mississippi River here in extreme southern Illinois. One side of the road is sheer bluffs up to 200+ ft tall, which snakes den in after migrating out of the swamp. In summer there are tons of wading birds nesting and wood warblers, and not a soul in sight. Uphill it opens into dense forest and downhill is a nice winding river with a railroad bridge over it. Birds migrate right up the Mississippi River and stop along the way for a rest in this area.

    The Panasonic 200 f2.8 is a very nice lens to consider (a bit hard to find used) , I also have an old 150mm f2 Olympus from the older four thirds (vs current micro four thirds), there is a simple adapter that works well with the OM1. I shoot with both a Canon and Olympus and Panasonic. Gotta love the backpack options with OM1
