The other thing about the Avalon is that the first owners were typically older drivers who babied them and did all the scheduled maintenance on time at the dealer.
I recently bought a 96 Avalon with 210k from a 75 yo man. I was surprised when I removed the valve cover. That's the cleanest 1mz I've ever owned. The only thing I don't like is the fabrics on the sun visors and headliners are bad. They won't hold up in my area.
I bought a 2008 Avalon 2 months before Covid hit. It was owned by a older lady who drove it to church, and the grocery store. Not sure if I’ll find another for that price, for a long time. It’s value has almost doubled.
If you pull a Carfax on some Avalon's you can see them typically falling from 1st or second owners, some dealer maintained. Just do your research, its still possible to find them in great shape. I was going to help a friend buy one, it was probably the cleanest Avalon I seen, was an 06 with the remote start, light blue, barely over 100K, fully loaded, 2 owners, dealer maintained by both, 0 rust, mechanically clean, engine looked great and clean. Suspension was tight, road great for what it was, V6 had more than enough pep, coming from RWD V8's it didn't feel compromised. One of the only cars in the price range with heated AND cooled seats, plus you get dual zone, easy to install an Android auto/Carplay headunit and a backup camera. The only gripe I had was that the seats weren't as comfortable as a true luxury car, they're plush but the lumbar leaves something to be desired for me, basically a Camry's seats. Didn't end up buying it because it was 9K (today's market, geez) and the dealership damaged it after taking the pics and scuffed up the rear bumper real bad, tried to claim there was nothing they could do about it, so it was a pass, but I highly recommend these.
Wizard you are correct. That Toyota (if made in Japan) is worth every penny of cost to purchase. I always bought GM products, I'm 72 years old. 2018 I had a bout with kidney cancer. I needed a car to replace my 2004 Impala. I needed something for my wife that was reliable in the event the cancer put me in the ground. I bought a Lexus ES350, 2015, in 2018. My health is reasonably good after having kidney cancer. But this car will spoil you. I made a correct decision (my first car that was not made in the USA. Quality you can see and feel when you drive it. When American car manufacturers can produce a car with this quality, I will again buy American. Until that happens, I will buy Lexus/Toyota. I'm 72, 6 heart procedures, been on a ventilator. 3 yrs ago I found a 2008 Avalon Limited, 24k original miles, garaged and Pristine Condition. I now have 61k. Normal maintenance, had to replace high beams, dash has a crack which was a recall years ago. Leather looks brand new as does carpets, mats etc. I've made 6-7 trips of 1,400 mile round trip, 11 hours one way with 5 hours thru mountains cruising at 80+ mph. I've had 2 Camry XLE's v6's loaded with navigation etc, 2007, 2011 that were superb, bought new without ANY problems. ES350 is a gorgeous, well made vehicle. I've had over 22 cars, mostly new leases. Biggest piece of crap I've ever owned - 99 Chev Tahoe. Spent $1,000's in maintenance and repairs. 80k miles in 3 yrs and trans was going, fuel pump for $1,500, 3-4 sets of brakes, rotors. Changinging differential fluid ever 20k.
I have an 07 Avalon. Almost 300k miles and I plan on getting it to half a million. No major repairs, front bearings and cv axles are the only big repairs I’ve ever had to do. Plan on getting timing chains replaced soon only because of high mileage. Love this car
Does it have the 2GR? Even then I’ve never seen timing chains break/stretch on those motors, usually the timing gears and oil control valves like to give out occasionally. The timing covers have a habit of leaking as well sometimes
I have a 2009 Avalon with 348,151 miles . Everything still works , minor repairs wheel bearing and tires but this car will easily go 500k. Thanks for the video!
this car, in my eyes, is one of the most underrated mainstream luxury vehicles. EVER. these things ride so smooth and quiet, and they have automatic everything. truly such a good car that nobody seems to talk about. *edit: i also forgot the heated/cooled seats, gigantic backseat, and good power. all under (usually) $20,000.
@@alanroberts6918 my '03 rav is in the shop all the time getting parts replaced. but that's because it's old. and, i bet that's false, considering that car is almost 40 years old. the avalon is an overall better luxury car reliability wise compared to all german and american cars.
YES! Thanks for reviewing it! It's in such great shape, and no surprise it's the first Avalon I see come to your shop and it required very little work, it's THAT good of a car and I can personally testify to that with the one we own, 190k miles and still runs with zero oil leaks.
I really appreciate you knowledge and honesty. Also, I totally agree that cars should be STOCK and not modified. I own a 2013 Avalon that I bought from an older couple that bought it brand new. I got it in FEB 2020 with 28k on it. They were selling it because they were buying a new Lexus RX350. This car was garage kept and emwas as clean as brand new. It is the Limited model with the Tecnology package and is a wonderful car in all respects. It had the window sticker and all service invoices and the previous owner took beautiful care of it. Originally it cost $42k and I bought it for $18k. It now has 36K on it and I feel it was money well spent on a wonderful car that I plan to keep for many years and many miles
They're gonna have to bury me in my '05 XLS. I just turned over 196000 and still runs like a champ! I call it my Japanese Roadmaster! I saw it in the background of Hoovie's video and was hoping you'd do a vid on it. Great cars and great video Wizard!
Yay! Car Wizard is working on an Avalon like mine. A few comments; I love my Avalon.. It is not as sharp to drive as my old TL-S, BUT it accelerates similarly and is more plush for long drives - has nearly the same power output but doesn't need premium gas. I added a GTA Bluetooth kit to the factory stereo, which is REALLY GOOD btw for a stock unit. This generation not only has great rear legroom but the rear seats also recline... which Toyota did away with in the next generations. Super reliable car for sure. The 3.5 were prone to have an oil line leak that should have been covered by a Toyota recall. Bought mine over 2 years ago at 160k, now have 190k. I got a great deal (like 3k under book value) on it due to a broken front spring and bad exhaust flex pipe. I put new struts/springs on it, some new front suspension bits, brakes and had a new flex joint put in. Been an absolute rock ever since. Yes it is plain... but that also allows you to do 85 in a 70 without getting a second look. Oh, with this crazy car world we are in it keeps going up in value... even with the mileage. Me driving this car as long as I possibly can will DO WAY MORE FOR THE PLANET THAN BUYING A NEW EV! Hold on to these, one day people will give an arm for a non electric / non Turbo, dependable car that still goes when the electric grid fails!
Bought 08 avalon used with 35k miles in 09 . Give it to my daughter with with 167000 miles and it still going strong . Best car I have ever own. …if my daughter if want to get rid it I would re buy it from her .
I’d argue the generation before this one is even more reliable. The engine in that car is non-interference. I see them on a daily basis beat to absolute s***, but they’re still trundling along. Amazing cars!
Absolutely. You find 2nd Gen Avalons with 300k+ miles all the time, meanwhile most used 3rd gens that I see seem to only make it to around 250k before they're trashed. I'm sure the 3.5 is much more powerful, but I'll stick with the 3.0
I can personally attest to this. My dad has a 2003 with 241k right now, oil change interval isn't consistent (10-15k sometimes), a bunch of steering components could probably be replaced, struts went bad like 60k ago, timing belt to my knowledge is original, but she just keeps on trucking.
I brought this same car recently but a 2005. BLOWN away by how good the car is. It’s not just reliable this thing is fast and loaded with features. This could be the best used car on the market. It’s very quick the engine is powerful. I love the power you don’t expect it to be quick. It’s very roomy and it has features in the top trim that some new cars don’t come standard with
I have a 2015 Camry with the same engine/transmission. The drivetrain is butter smooth. Normal driving is just absolutely effortless, but if you put your foot down it'll have you in ticket territory in no time flat. Best car I've ever had.
I have an 05 Avalon too ... probably the best used car ive ever owned. Comfortable, reliable and economical. That 3.5 is incredible .. pass anything you like!

I have a 2011 Camry with a 3.5. My car has 350,000 miles on it and it still runs and drives like it’s new. Just had to replace the CV axles but I’m pretty sure it was time. Other than that only maintenance type items have been replaced. It doesn’t burn or leak any oil. I drive 100 miles a day for work and I’m not planning on getting rid of it anytime soon. After 400k I might start thinking about it. It’s almost like a challenge now.
As much as I am a Chevy guy, I know the Toyotas are kicking butt in the area of reliability. I don't like to admit it, but it is just a fact. Toyotas are good cars. Like Car Wizard said, if I was to suggest a car for the less mechanically inclined or younger people in my life, I would suggest a Toyota. Great video as always. She has a 2005 Avalon and while she complains about not having a new car, she cannot find a new one that she likes more. Her mother had a 2018 Avalon and my wife hated it. This 2007 looks almost identical to my wife's car. While this car is not quite as quick as the Maxima she used to have, this car is pretty quick and her mechanic (me) likes how much easier it is to work on than the Max plus the parts are cheaper.
I remember wanting to get one of these back in 2007. However, the kids were still at home and we had more expenses then. So we ended up with a 2007 Camry XLE. Same 3.5L engine though. We still have our Camry and it runs great. Only 88K miles on it too. Still I always loved the full ride of the Avalon. I talked my best friend into purchasing a 2014 Avalon Hybrid (used) at the same dealer I bought our Camry at. He still has it and really enjoys the car. The front seats are so 'open'. He is over 6 feet tall so it works well for him. Great gas mileage as well....
I’ve had an 07 Avalon for about 5 years now. It was my very first car and was a salvaged title when I got him. I’ll admit to putting quite a few bumps and scratches on him over the years. He’s at over 180,000 now. A few months ago he was totaled again during a collision. Fixed him up with some parts found at a junk yard and he’s still driving like a dream. Practically indestructible! Definitely going to be my kids’ first cars.
My mom had one of these. Gifted to a relative after 160k miles. Never saw a repair shop except for a 100k mile service. The relative is still driving it with who knows how many miles now. Wizard isn't lying. It's that good.
Thie generation of the Avalon is my favorite. It's a near-luxury car that could have been a Lexus. Its smooth-riding chassis soaks up endless miles of bumpy roads with legendary Toyota reliability. I love the interior, the covers for the radio, and the Venetian blinds airvents. It makes the entire dash look seamless. Power-wise, it's just ok. It's good enough, but how great would the 4.7 litre V8 have been in this car? Sadly we will never know. It should have been an option.
It is a Lexus lol. Just swap that T for an L. It was Toyota's top of the line, especially in the 2007-2009 range. I have an '08. It is the ultimate car payment killer and absolutely will not die. I have put 219,000 miles on it. My girlfriend has a 2012 Subaru with 110,000 miles on it that has had issues consistently that I take care of.
I had a customer have one of these. Last time I worked on it, it had 260,000 miles on it. The only thing that was kind of a pain was the lug nuts always rounded off because of the caps on them. Other then that and other wear items, even at 260k it still ran like a champ and drove really well.
I have a 2018 Avalon and I love it. The ride is so smooth and so far has been very reliable. The only things I replaced were wipers, tires and battery. It has a little over 60K miles and I expect it to go much more, too bad Toyota decided to discontinue the Avalon after the 2022 model.
@@bill90405good point. I was told that Avalon drivers were trading in for the Highlander. It also gave them the chance to introduce the Crown in the US which was a mistake.
👍👍 Two thumbs up. Rocking an 03 Avalon with 153K miles on it. Runs absolutely fine. The leather on the drivers seat and steering wheel is shot but you'll get that when a car is two decades old. Invest in seat covers if you're keeping it that long or using it as a daily. White/beige does stain easy - choose darker or black leather to help hide those marks. A spare carpet floor mat for the drivers side is recommended too because your heel WILL eventually make a hole in the original.
Just got a 2006 and it's a posh flying living room built like a tank. I call it the Japanese Jaguar...more reserved style, but she has it where it counts. Huge fan of the Limited trim level, it's packed with every gizmo they had and they ALL still work.
My dad has a 07 avalon with 300k miles now he drives just over 100 miles round-trip for work daily. He lives his car he has had almost no problems minor .and it had under 100k when he got it about 5 years ago. He loves it and said same as wizard it's got plenty of miles left he's gonna drive it till it drops.... ours has nav controls we're that tape deck is
Great video! One note on the dash - if you have one of this era and the dash is cracked, Toyota had a warranty exception to replace the dash, so ask your Toyota dealer if yours is covered. I have an '01 and an '06 Avalon and love them!
Ditto on my 2000 XLS, and recent 2005 XLS with a very powerful engine, it's a Rocket! One thing though: Gotta change that 2005 VVT-i bank one, rupturing rubber oil supply line with an all metal one! YESTERDAY!!!
Tomorrow I'll be setting off on a cross-country trip in my Toyota Sienna to visit family who recently moved to Newton, KS a couple years ago. The V6 has almost 270,000 miles on the odometer but I still feel confident in it's reliability.
Our current 2011 sienna awd has just gone over 300,000 , my daughter drives our old 2004 with 480,000 on it and they both run great with no problems, we do very regular maintenance and all is well 🤩👍🏻
Toyota Australia sold the, 2GR-FE Supercharged TRD Aurion outputting 241 kW (323 hp) of power and 400 N⋅m (295 lb⋅ft) of torque in the mid-2000's but halted production due to poor sales due to the high price and availability of V8 cars from Holden and Ford.
Just bought a 2008 Avalon with 230k miles for $1,800. Good maintenance and records for the car. New suspension parts all the way around. It was throwing a misfire code, and that is why the owner was selling it so cheap at originally $2,500. All it needed was an alternator. Been driving all the time. Love the 268 hp.
I am a firm believer that if you take care of anything it will last. I have a 2008 Kia Sedona with 226540 original miles. Everything works. It doesn't burn a drop of oil. The transmission works flawlessly. Everything electrical works (except the sliding doors) which I now open manually which I prefer since it's faster. The air conditioning works fine. The paint job has no rust or flacking or crazing. I have faithfully maintained the vehicle since it was purchased new. I have replaced tires, had alignments and balancing done. I replaced the alternator. I have also needed new batteries over the years...all expected replacements and repairs due to age and usage. But the engine and transmission are perfect. I hear a lot about how bad Kias are but that has not been my experience with this vehicle. So you can take all this for what is it worth. I have been buying Kias since 2003 and my experience with this brand has been a very good one. Just thought I would share this.
My inlaws have owned 2 Kia's and both had engine replaced under warranty. Engine and Tranny make the cars history. Also, my Kia Sophia back in 1999 started falling apart a month after buying it. From crappy engine, clutch and electric windows to the electrical system melting down under the dash to the window seals leaking. Bad news!
I have had mine since 2017, just about to tick over 200,000 miles. Just replaced all the front end suspension parts and the rear is next. Gonna keep that car forever
I daily a 96 Avalon with 200k as the family transport with 3 kids, 2 in car seats. Just had the timing belt serviced. When the 12 year-old has another growth spurt we will get Sienna.
The great thing about Toyota is that the quality & reliability of my base model 07 ce Corolla is as good as that top of the line Avalon. Is my daily driver with 216k miles. This car has needed the least repairs and lowest maintenance cost of any vehicle in my family since 1985. That includes three other Toyota's ,89 Cressida, 90 4runner & 05 Sienna.
I have the same generation of corolla (03). Its my first car and I honestly dont know if ill ever have another car as good as it is. 6+ years and 80k+ (currently sitting at 225k) and ive never had to replace anything other than brakes and a couple hubs, although i did once do a couple of gaskets that were starting to weep. Truly convinced that only time can kill it. Those cars are legendary
I have a 06 manual ce and I love it. I bought it with 180k miles 2 years ago for college and it's been a bullet proof trooper. My previous 03 Sebring with half the miles was a pos that constantly broke down. Probably the best 2k I've ever spent

Love your channel. I bought a 2007 Toyota Avalon for my Granddaughter. The first test drive sold me. The engine was strong, but the previous owner let so many things lapse for just basic maintenance. I put 1,000 in it to make it safe and road worthy and now she wants something NEW. Guess what, I'm now getting the Avalon!!! I'll be putting another 3,000 into it to upgrade the stereo and other things she never got done that needed doing. It currently has about 199,000 and the engine and transmission is showing no signs of going anytime soon. After the test drive I suspect it may have another engine put in, not sure, but it acted new. OMG it has a timing chain!!!! BONUS!
Last Friday I was at a Toyota dealership for a maintenance on my Camry and was very tempted to exchange it for a 2019 Avalon with 15k miles that they had in the lot.
I really enjoy my 2001 Avalon XLS. Purchased new from my local Toyota shop. 140,000 on my 21 year old car and it runs like a champ. My daughter owns a 2003 Avalon and my wife owns a 2006 Avalon. No issues whatsoever on my car. The ‘06 has had only minor work done. No complaints from this Toyota family.
I have an 08 Avalon which has served us well for the better part of a decade. Going on 180k miles. They come from the factory with Irridium plugs which I've never had to change. Limited trim has the HID low beams which aren't super reliable. The only expensive bill I've had was the dual-zone core going out in the dash, only way to replace that is to pull the entire dash out. I replaced the blower motor myself, literally just open the glove box and you can reach the 3 bolts to drop it into the passenger footwell. 100% agree with the wizard on this.
I drove a 1995 Avalon for 10 years and over 200k miles. No issues except regular maintenance. It had a great comfortable ride, and adequate power from the 3.0 liter V6. I bet that thing is still running for somebody to this day.
I have an 09 Avalon with 250k miles that I’ve owned for 10 years and it still runs like a champ. Other than water pump replacement (which the failure was caused by me putting non OEM fluid it) and one ignition coil going out it’s been dead reliable. All I’ve done is oil changes and a transmission drain/refill. I intended to replace it this year but given the market I’ve decided to hold onto the Avalon for another year or two.
I drive a 2011 camry (same generation as this car) and In my opinion this was the best generation of toyotas. perfect blend between practicality and electronics.
@@jasontengan1233 I had the V8 LS400, it was a great car... Awesome luxury and looks, but drank gas like it was free, lol. I sold it and bought a 2011 Avalon limited, superb gas mileage, very comfortable and has more room than the LS400. Both are extremely reliable 👍🏾

Fun fact, the trim wood paneling is not plastic even on the dash, they carve the shape from real wood grain, and hydro-dip in a protective plastic finish. Look up the dealer price, hundreds of dollars per panel
Wizard,I bought my daughter a 2001 Toyota Avalon 5 years ago for her first car.I bought it at a local auction,all the bidders would pop their head in and see that it had 236K on it..I bought it for $600 including fees.It's still on the road today with 267k on it now.I've had to do usual maintenance and some small things like a bad coil,O2 sensor,cam solenoids.but that's it.It doesn't smoke,leak,tick nothing.I know the timing belts will be it's death but until then she loves it.I am a mechanic I just don't feel like doing them,At that point I will buy her something newer.
I have an 03 Camry i4 with 201,000 miles that is only now needing some work. The flex pipe for the exhaust is all but shot but other than the regular changing of fluids and plugs, new water pump, normal stuff , I haven’t had to do anything intense in the maintenance department. Best $2,500 I ever spent and it still gets 26-30mpg and is a life saver right now with gas being so expensive. I’d take this car on any journey across the Midwest.
I drive a 2007 Avalon, bought in 2012 with 61K miles and paid $16,000. Best car ever. Currently 168K miles. It is a beautiful dependable car I hope to drive till I die. I am 69 years old.
Ditto. I purchased my 07 Avalon XLS in 2012 for $16k w/ 32k miles. 10 years later at 101k miles still riding great and can’t justify buying another car any time soon. My mechanic (toyota) mentioned to me and my wife, this year and model is one of the best and not to sale it.😊
Had 07 avalon as my first car. Loved it Loved it Loved it and road triped it everywhere across America. Roomy, quiet, comfortable, quick enough, good on gas for what it is, and reliable. Had to sold it when the evaporator start leaking. 2000 job to rip the dash just didn't make sense. Can't live without AC in texas
Love the Avalon & was in search of one but I ended up buying a 2010 Lexus ES 350 Base Model a few years ago & have zero regrets. Toyota makes incredibly reliable cars, I will never buy another manufacturer's wheels.
I have a 2010 es350 and It drives smoother than brand new Mercedes I've tested l.. the only problem is the gas mileage isn't good but it is a V6. Very comfortable car, ice cold AC!

These cars are immortal. Never break down, just keep rolling on. I have a cousin that owns a 2000 Avalon with 240k miles. Against my advice he seldom changes the oil (hasn’t changed it in about 30k+ miles) or does any regular maintenance. The struts are blown, brakes are warped to hell. But it keeps going.
@jeepthing98 I dunno, I kinda hope he continues to neglect it so he learns the hard way. Also I’m really curious on how long this car will last with zero maintenance. The only “maintenance “ he does is occasionally add oil, but it’s never been changed the whole time he’s had it.
brother, tell him to swap to full synthetic oil, do a trans flush, and get struts, brake pads and rotors. not that expensive of a repair. can get 4 oem struts for around $300 and brake stuff is like ~$250. trust me, it will make a world of difference
I bought a 2014 Avalon Hybrid in Limited trim as a certified used car. It’s up to 95K miles, and it has been amazing. I have only had to perform routine maintenance like oil changes, tires, and brakes. It’s reliable and actually fun to drive in the mountain twisties.
I have a 2007 Avalon, bought it in 09 with just over 20k miles. Without a doubt the best money I ever spent on a car. I've done the maintenance religiously, actually I change the oil and filter every 3k miles. The only modification I've done is to remove the plastic engine cover. I like the look and sound of the engine, especially during hard acceleration and the rpm's get above 5k. There's a couple other things I really like. Self leveling headlights and reclining rear seats. Her name is Blue, as of today she's got just over 89k miles. It's roomy, comfortable, quiet, on the highway 30 mpg is average. I'm well into my 60's and I have no intention of ever buying another car, although my mechanic tries to buy her every time she's in for service. By the way, several of my family members tried the cheap route and bought GM vehicles with the 3.6, they're having some regrets. I'm happy, happy, happy 😊
It’s a great choice vehicle. It should last you well past 300k marker for sure. Of course, it’s no speed demon but it will get you from point a to point B.
@jbvilla82 It may not be a speed demon compared to some of the newer sports cars, but it is surprisingly quick and powerful. From 40 mph if I floor it to pass another vehicle, it spins the tires as you go around and by the time you pull back into your lane the Avalon will be hitting 80 mph. I don't know what the top speed of this car is, but I've had it up to 130 mph and she was still pulling. That was as fast as I wanted to go. Something else about the Avalon is the aerodynamic shape of the body causes the car to feel more planted to the road as your speed increases. I can't say enough about how good this car has been.
I have one! I welded a trailer hitch on mine, and Paul ATVs, and JetSki‘s with it! 200,000 miles on mine and no problems. I bought it with 58,000 miles on it.
I just inherited an 02 Avalon with 98k. It was garaged every winter and received every bit of maintenance by age instead of miles. My aunt and uncle even kept every receipt for service in a folder that came with it. Yes, even the timing belt was done a few years back. The window sticker was in there too; they paid $27k for it new.
I just had a silver avolon in the shop today. The owner attempted to do a tune up and somehow sucked rags through the intake port. It came in misfiring on the center cylinder on the back bank under the intake manifold. I sold plugs and gaskets to get to it. Replaced plugs and moved the coils around put it back together to find that it still misfired on cylinder 3. Tore it back down did a compression check and nothing on #3. It was after I tested compression that the customer admitted to the rag being sucked through the engine. I soaked the valves with PB blaster put a leakage tester on it and physically blew out the shop rag stuck in the valve seat. Put it back together and it quit misfiring on cylinder #3. Customer was happy that the engine did not need to be removed and the cylinder head gone through.

Just bought a 2006 Avalon Touring for 7k with 43k miles on it. One owner who passed away. Very well maintained, had all the records. Has some scrapes and dents So smooth & quiet on the highway, it's actually relaxing. But I've never owned a car this wide and long. Driving & parking in-town, I was having some second thoughts, especially since my son is going to learn to drive on it and commuting to community college. This great video reminds me why I bought it, and should hang onto it!
I’d say what it makes those more magic than Audis, Mercedes and anything else fancy is that *Toyotas are built to last.* They are friendly to their owners. While other fancy cars look cool, drive fast and all the stuff that gets the attention of people, they don’t last or require high costs to do so. And Toyotas(as well as other japanese cars) do not turn your bank account into a hurricane.
I think most of the jags with the 4.2 are also very reliable, I wouldn’t own an audi or mercedes before a 4.2 jag, (not newer ones with the 5.0) we had toyotas before and they were good on reliability but just love jags and their uniqueness, quality etc, the older ones gave them a bad rep, the XKs and XJ8s, especially XJ8s are beat up all the time by neglectful owners with over 200k and the engines still run and beautiful interiors hold up well
My dad had a 2000:bought brand new. He stopped driving in 2019 and I bought it off him for $3500 and 108,000 miles. Now at at 147,000 and the car is bone stock original. Oil changed every 3000, tranny every 30K. It drives like it just drove off the showroom floor. It was supposed to be the extra car, but I love driving it.
The XLS models also have the dual mode shifters, that allow you to shift like a manual transmission. That plus the engine make our 2007 Avalon an absolute ball to drive!

I don't think I've ever skipped a car wizard video?? This was the exception. As soon as I saw it was a Toyota Avalon video? I knew there weren't gonna be any issues to address. Yup they're boring. But I've owned one and done essentially nothing other than oil changes and tires over the last 14 years. Perfect car low maintenance trouble free. Highly recommend this particular Toyota.
Love my 2011 Avalon, looks better than this first facelift and it’s been pretty much bulletproof. Only downside is the suspension can start to wear about 100/120k
There is no car ever made - past, present or future - that won't need things like bushings, control arms and/or ball joints, shocks, brakes, tires, hoses, etc every so often. 100,000 miles is the typical life of a shock absorber in ANY car.
I liked the first-gen Avalons with the bench seat and column-shift automatic. Weird to see that in a Toyota, but it should tell you who they were marketing the car to.
The first and second generations were better design wise in my opinion. The 3rd gen was a little too much like the Camry and even solara. yes I know they are based off each other. But there was still a lot of distinction in the interior. After that, they seem to have found their footing. Too bad the Avalon is no longer being made :(
I was just gifted a silver 2007 Avalon XLS by my aunt. Her parents had bought it brand new and then gave it to her and then she in turn gave it to me. Has 185,000~ miles on it and I love this thing! They kept all the records of maintenance as well and kept it very clean. It's the fanciest car I've ever owned, and the biggest!
Very good car but not a perfect car. Mine has had a perfect drivetrain and a quiet, comfortable ride. But on the negative side, the AC is leaking at the evaporator and will cost about $2500 to repair due to the very inaccessible location. Two of the door locks failed but this can be a relatively easy and cheap repair. The rear sunshade mechanism is broken and not worth fixing so I forced it down and pulled the fuse so no one could accidentally get it stuck halfway up. And finally the hands-free phone link and the navigation system are archaic and hard to use and you can't get updated maps. Other than that, it has been great.🙂
My 13 Highlander is at 124,000 and I’ll I’ve done is oil change, tires, and brakes. Literally nothing else ever. Also still in beautiful condition, even after the NY winters.
I have an '09 Avalon and '05 ES330, both in nice shape. Where I work I have been asked by two different guys if I want to sell them. I never had that happen when I drove Chrysler products.

My brother has an 06' Avalon w over 350k miles.. still running strong and smooth as ever. I've got an 08' w 177k that I paid only $3,700 for. I love the heated n cooled seats and it's got so many other convenient features. Even the rear seats recline. Best bang for the buck for sure!
I worked for Toyota when the Avalon was released. The Avalon was designed to be the low end Lexus. Instead, Lexus took a Camry and made the ES series and Toyota got the Avalon. Toyota got the better car for sure.
If you worked for Toyota then you would know that the Lexus ES350 or 330,300 were NOT camrys they are Avalons with more noise insulation and high end interior materials. It must have been the 90's since your position at Toyota
I have a 2005 toyota corolla CE with a 5 manual that sat for a very long time before my grandfather purchased it, when he passed away i inherited the car and at the moment it is sitting at 69,000+ miles, and still runs great. All i have done is wash it, change and refill the liquids, check and change the brake pads if need be and make sure the tires aren't flat and have been enjoying it.
The reason that old people drive these cars is because they are experienced, they have been through it and heard it all already. “I want some things that will last me out of here“
I currently daily drive an 01 XE Avalon my folks bought brand new. The thing runs like a top with 289k miles on it. Yay proper maintenance. It has the 3.0 motor, new shocks all around, a full tune up at 220k. The thing does not miss a beat. I love this car. My only complaint is the blend door that does not work due to cigarettes lol. Just buzzes and will randomly buzz driving hehe. Love you Mom!!!
My grandma bought one just like this new. Had bbs rims from the factory somehow. She just sold it last year with 250k miles and got another new Toyota.
Car Wizard, you'd be proud of me... earlier this year I flew to a city about an hour away (in New Zealand), then hitch-hiked for 2 hours to meet the (elderly couple) owners of a year 2000 Toyota Avalon, 100,000 km (about 60,000 miles), fully serviced, immaculate interior, just such a sweet V6 engine. Cost was $4k (in NZ dollars) or about $2k in US dollars. What a bargain. They are so smooth-running and reliable. Only thing to remember is to get them replenished every 5,000 km with synthetic oil as otherwise they tend to get sludge collecting inside the engine. I recommend these cars - far from exciting, but so nicely built and easy to drive. I owned a Lexus LS400 about 10 years ago but prefer the Avalon.
These third-generation Toyota Avalon's are excellent full-size sedans in the used vehicle market, because I am a fan of them. I am hoping that the Car Wizard will do another video on a reliable, used vehicle. For example, a 2005 Mitsubishi Endeavor mid-size SUV, because these vehicles are much more reliable, compared to the older Montero Sport's and any Isuzu vehicle in the used market.

I have a 2007 Avalon Limited. Mine has been to the moon & back with 383K miles on it & not to mention the few nights that it’s been idling while at Rest Stops. I bought mine when I was at my lowest in life. The serpentine belt snapped while leaving Birmingham to drive back home 40 mins away & still kept going(non-interference engine). The car took me safely across the country & back with 0 problems & will keep going until the wheels fall off or if I somehow manage to get it to a million miles.
With value being irrelevant, if I were just choosing a car to drive every day for the next couple years, I'd choose this over any of Hoovie's "super" cars.
In 2008 I purchased a new Toyota Solara convertible. I was driving on a twisty hilly road, dry pavement, and I touched the (anti-lock) brakes to slow down for a curve (I was only doing around 45 - I don't go any faster on this road) and the brakes locked up. Mentioned it to the dealer service manager and his attitude was 'Don't worry about it'. I got rid of it after about a year of ownership.
I have an '05 that I'm in love with. about 180K on it. I get maintenance and put gas in it. I had one injector and an alternator replaced. This one of the best cars I have ever owned. The headlights can be fixed with very little effort. I do family and friends every year on a variety of cars. they're easy to do. If you want I'd be happy to tell you haw to fix them. I like your show, good job.
In the process of acquiring a 2016 Avalon Touring. 59K miles. Expect delivery next Tuesday. Both my '05 Mustang and this car should outlive me. I am just starting my eighth decade on planet earth. My oldest son, who works as an estimator for the local Toyota body shop owns a Tundra and just bought a 2022 Avalon Touring (three days ago). Rode in it for the very first time today. Smooth as silk and and sweet as apple pie.
Got a 2006 Avalon with 260,000 miles for a friend of mine. We replaced the struts, plugs, and headlights. Also serviced the transmission for him. They really are awesome cars.
European car brands have a psychological problem with high mileage. The average ownership period of a car in Europe, whether bought/leased or a company car, is four years. Average mileage per year is less than 10,000 miles. So, by the time the car hits 100k miles, it's likely to be on its third or even fourth owner. The company doesn't care as 1) they don't build that model any more, and 2) anything that goes wrong can be blamed on the previous owners. Some Mercs and Volvos have done enough miles to go to the Moon and back, but those were built in the 60's. Current models? Nope.
Not enrirely true. Volvo's from the '90's also last; I myself had a1995 Seat Toledo (brother of the Golf II) diesel: 300.000 miles without any problem, total cost of repair and maintenance $0,01/mile ; same story for a 1999 Peugeot 406 Break diesel: 250.000 miles without problems. Mercedes 190 is also legendary reliable and lasting; it was the last MB designed to live forever.

The other thing about the Avalon is that the first owners were typically older drivers who babied them and did all the scheduled maintenance on time at the dealer.

I recently bought a 96 Avalon with 210k from a 75 yo man. I was surprised when I removed the valve cover. That's the cleanest 1mz I've ever owned. The only thing I don't like is the fabrics on the sun visors and headliners are bad. They won't hold up in my area.
I bought a 2008 Avalon 2 months before Covid hit. It was owned by a older lady who drove it to church, and the grocery store. Not sure if I’ll find another for that price, for a long time. It’s value has almost doubled.

If you pull a Carfax on some Avalon's you can see them typically falling from 1st or second owners, some dealer maintained.
Just do your research, its still possible to find them in great shape.
I was going to help a friend buy one, it was probably the cleanest Avalon I seen, was an 06 with the remote start, light blue, barely over 100K, fully loaded, 2 owners, dealer maintained by both, 0 rust, mechanically clean, engine looked great and clean.
Suspension was tight, road great for what it was, V6 had more than enough pep, coming from RWD V8's it didn't feel compromised.
One of the only cars in the price range with heated AND cooled seats, plus you get dual zone, easy to install an Android auto/Carplay headunit and a backup camera.
The only gripe I had was that the seats weren't as comfortable as a true luxury car, they're plush but the lumbar leaves something to be desired for me, basically a Camry's seats.
Didn't end up buying it because it was 9K (today's market, geez) and the dealership damaged it after taking the pics and scuffed up the rear bumper real bad, tried to claim there was nothing they could do about it, so it was a pass, but I highly recommend these.
Wizard you are correct. That Toyota (if made in Japan) is worth every penny of cost to purchase. I always bought GM products, I'm 72 years old. 2018 I had a bout with kidney cancer. I needed a car to replace my 2004 Impala. I needed something for my wife that was reliable in the event the cancer put me in the ground. I bought a Lexus ES350, 2015, in 2018. My health is reasonably good after having kidney cancer. But this car will spoil you. I made a correct decision (my first car that was not made in the USA.
Quality you can see and feel when you drive it. When American car manufacturers can produce a car with this quality, I will again buy American. Until that happens, I will buy Lexus/Toyota.

I'm 72, 6 heart procedures, been on a ventilator. 3 yrs ago I found a 2008 Avalon Limited, 24k original miles, garaged and Pristine Condition. I now have 61k. Normal maintenance, had to replace high beams, dash has a crack which was a recall years ago. Leather looks brand new as does carpets, mats etc. I've made 6-7 trips of 1,400 mile round trip, 11 hours one way with 5 hours thru mountains cruising at 80+ mph. I've had 2 Camry XLE's v6's loaded with navigation etc, 2007, 2011 that were superb, bought new without ANY problems. ES350 is a gorgeous, well made vehicle. I've had over 22 cars, mostly new leases. Biggest piece of crap I've ever owned - 99 Chev Tahoe. Spent $1,000's in maintenance and repairs. 80k miles in 3 yrs and trans was going, fuel pump for $1,500, 3-4 sets of brakes, rotors. Changinging differential fluid ever 20k.
I have an 07 Avalon. Almost 300k miles and I plan on getting it to half a million. No major repairs, front bearings and cv axles are the only big repairs I’ve ever had to do. Plan on getting timing chains replaced soon only because of high mileage. Love this car

Does it have the 2GR? Even then I’ve never seen timing chains break/stretch on those motors, usually the timing gears and oil control valves like to give out occasionally. The timing covers have a habit of leaking as well sometimes

YES! Thanks for reviewing it! It's in such great shape, and no surprise it's the first Avalon I see come to your shop and it required very little work, it's THAT good of a car and I can personally testify to that with the one we own, 190k miles and still runs with zero oil leaks.
I really appreciate you knowledge and honesty. Also, I totally agree that cars should be STOCK and not modified. I own a 2013 Avalon that I bought from an older couple that bought it brand new. I got it in FEB 2020 with 28k on it. They were selling it because they were buying a new Lexus RX350. This car was garage kept and emwas as clean as brand new. It is the Limited model with the Tecnology package and is a wonderful car in all respects. It had the window sticker and all service invoices and the previous owner took beautiful care of it. Originally it cost $42k and I bought it for $18k. It now has 36K on it and I feel it was money well spent on a wonderful car that I plan to keep for many years and many miles

Yay! Car Wizard is working on an Avalon like mine. A few comments; I love my Avalon.. It is not as sharp to drive as my old TL-S, BUT it accelerates similarly and is more plush for long drives - has nearly the same power output but doesn't need premium gas. I added a GTA Bluetooth kit to the factory stereo, which is REALLY GOOD btw for a stock unit. This generation not only has great rear legroom but the rear seats also recline... which Toyota did away with in the next generations. Super reliable car for sure. The 3.5 were prone to have an oil line leak that should have been covered by a Toyota recall. Bought mine over 2 years ago at 160k, now have 190k. I got a great deal (like 3k under book value) on it due to a broken front spring and bad exhaust flex pipe. I put new struts/springs on it, some new front suspension bits, brakes and had a new flex joint put in. Been an absolute rock ever since. Yes it is plain... but that also allows you to do 85 in a 70 without getting a second look. Oh, with this crazy car world we are in it keeps going up in value... even with the mileage. Me driving this car as long as I possibly can will DO WAY MORE FOR THE PLANET THAN BUYING A NEW EV! Hold on to these, one day people will give an arm for a non electric / non Turbo, dependable car that still goes when the electric grid fails!

I’d argue the generation before this one is even more reliable. The engine in that car is non-interference. I see them on a daily basis beat to absolute s***, but they’re still trundling along. Amazing cars!
Absolutely. You find 2nd Gen Avalons with 300k+ miles all the time, meanwhile most used 3rd gens that I see seem to only make it to around 250k before they're trashed. I'm sure the 3.5 is much more powerful, but I'll stick with the 3.0

had a '98 with 250k mi on it and it ran amazing. i replaced the timing belt and drove it 3 years before selling it without issues.
I can personally attest to this. My dad has a 2003 with 241k right now, oil change interval isn't consistent (10-15k sometimes), a bunch of steering components could probably be replaced, struts went bad like 60k ago, timing belt to my knowledge is original, but she just keeps on trucking.
Was worried that the customer would give up on that Lincoln, glad they opted for an engine-out service.

BLOWN away by how good the car is. It’s not just reliable this thing is fast and loaded with features. This could be the best used car on the market. It’s very quick the engine is powerful. I love the power you don’t expect it to be quick. It’s very roomy and it has features in the top trim that some new cars don’t come standard with
I have a 2015 Camry with the same engine/transmission. The drivetrain is butter smooth. Normal driving is just absolutely effortless, but if you put your foot down it'll have you in ticket territory in no time flat. Best car I've ever had.
I have an 05 Avalon too ... probably the best used car ive ever owned. Comfortable, reliable and economical. That 3.5 is incredible .. pass anything you like!

I have a 2011 Camry with a 3.5. My car has 350,000 miles on it and it still runs and drives like it’s new. Just had to replace the CV axles but I’m pretty sure it was time. Other than that only maintenance type items have been replaced. It doesn’t burn or leak any oil. I drive 100 miles a day for work and I’m not planning on getting rid of it anytime soon. After 400k I might start thinking about it. It’s almost like a challenge now.

As much as I am a Chevy guy, I know the Toyotas are kicking butt in the area of reliability. I don't like to admit it, but it is just a fact. Toyotas are good cars. Like Car Wizard said, if I was to suggest a car for the less mechanically inclined or younger people in my life, I would suggest a Toyota. Great video as always. She has a 2005 Avalon and while she complains about not having a new car, she cannot find a new one that she likes more. Her mother had a 2018 Avalon and my wife hated it. This 2007 looks almost identical to my wife's car. While this car is not quite as quick as the Maxima she used to have, this car is pretty quick and her mechanic (me) likes how much easier it is to work on than the Max plus the parts are cheaper.
I remember wanting to get one of these back in 2007.
However, the kids were still at home and we had more expenses then.
So we ended up with a 2007 Camry XLE. Same 3.5L engine though.
We still have our Camry and it runs great. Only 88K miles on it too.
Still I always loved the full ride of the Avalon.
I talked my best friend into purchasing a 2014 Avalon Hybrid (used) at the same dealer I bought our Camry at.
He still has it and really enjoys the car.
The front seats are so 'open'. He is over 6 feet tall so it works well for him.

I’ve had an 07 Avalon for about 5 years now.
It was my very first car and was a salvaged title when I got him. I’ll admit to putting quite a few bumps and scratches on him over the years. He’s at over 180,000 now. A few months ago he was totaled again during a collision.
Fixed him up with some parts found at a junk yard and he’s still driving like a dream. Practically indestructible!
Definitely going to be my kids’ first cars.
We had a 06 Avalon Limited, we sold it ten years later with 125 K on it. It was the most reliable car that we have ever owned.
My mom had one of these. Gifted to a relative after 160k miles. Never saw a repair shop except for a 100k mile service. The relative is still driving it with who knows how many miles now. Wizard isn't lying. It's that good.
Thie generation of the Avalon is my favorite. It's a near-luxury car that could have been a Lexus. Its smooth-riding chassis soaks up endless miles of bumpy roads with legendary Toyota reliability. I love the interior, the covers for the radio, and the Venetian blinds airvents. It makes the entire dash look seamless. Power-wise, it's just ok. It's good enough, but how great would the 4.7 litre V8 have been in this car? Sadly we will never know. It should have been an option.
It is a Lexus lol. Just swap that T for an L. It was Toyota's top of the line, especially in the 2007-2009 range. I have an '08. It is the ultimate car payment killer and absolutely will not die. I have put 219,000 miles on it. My girlfriend has a 2012 Subaru with 110,000 miles on it that has had issues consistently that I take care of.
My Avalon is the best car I've ever owned! So Reliable and such a smooth ride, made me a forever Toyota buyer.
I had a customer have one of these. Last time I worked on it, it had 260,000 miles on it. The only thing that was kind of a pain was the lug nuts always rounded off because of the caps on them. Other then that and other wear items, even at 260k it still ran like a champ and drove really well.
Supposed to take the cap off before you take the lug nut off. Are you taking the lug nuts off with the caps on?

I have a 2018 Avalon and I love it. The ride is so smooth and so far has been very reliable. The only things I replaced were wipers, tires and battery. It has a little over 60K miles and I expect it to go much more, too bad Toyota decided to discontinue the Avalon after the 2022 model.

👍👍 Two thumbs up. Rocking an 03 Avalon with 153K miles on it. Runs absolutely fine. The leather on the drivers seat and steering wheel is shot but you'll get that when a car is two decades old. Invest in seat covers if you're keeping it that long or using it as a daily. White/beige does stain easy - choose darker or black leather to help hide those marks. A spare carpet floor mat for the drivers side is recommended too because your heel WILL eventually make a hole in the original.
Just got a 2006 and it's a posh flying living room built like a tank. I call it the Japanese Jaguar...more reserved style, but she has it where it counts. Huge fan of the Limited trim level, it's packed with every gizmo they had and they ALL still work.
Everything that you stated about the Avalon is exactly why I purchased this car 2 yrs ago! Great car, great speed, reliability and comfort!

My dad has a 07 avalon with 300k miles now he drives just over 100 miles round-trip for work daily. He lives his car he has had almost no problems minor .and it had under 100k when he got it about 5 years ago. He loves it and said same as wizard it's got plenty of miles left he's gonna drive it till it drops.... ours has nav controls we're that tape deck is
Great video! One note on the dash - if you have one of this era and the dash is cracked, Toyota had a warranty exception to replace the dash, so ask your Toyota dealer if yours is covered. I have an '01 and an '06 Avalon and love them!
Ditto on my 2000 XLS, and recent 2005 XLS with a very powerful engine, it's a Rocket! One thing though: Gotta change that 2005 VVT-i bank one, rupturing rubber oil supply line with an all metal one! YESTERDAY!!!
Tomorrow I'll be setting off on a cross-country trip in my Toyota Sienna to visit family who recently moved to Newton, KS a couple years ago. The V6 has almost 270,000 miles on the odometer but I still feel confident in it's reliability.
Our current 2011 sienna awd has just gone over 300,000 , my daughter drives our old 2004 with 480,000 on it and they both run great with no problems, we do very regular maintenance and all is well 🤩👍🏻

Fun fact the 2GR FE engine was also used in various different Lotus' and had a couple supercharged variants as well.
Toyota Australia sold the, 2GR-FE Supercharged TRD Aurion outputting 241 kW (323 hp) of power and 400 N⋅m (295 lb⋅ft) of torque in the mid-2000's but halted production due to poor sales due to the high price and availability of V8 cars from Holden and Ford.
Just bought a 2008 Avalon with 230k miles for $1,800. Good maintenance and records for the car. New suspension parts all the way around. It was throwing a misfire code, and that is why the owner was selling it so cheap at originally $2,500. All it needed was an alternator. Been driving all the time. Love the 268 hp.

I am a firm believer that if you take care of anything it will last. I have a 2008 Kia Sedona with 226540 original miles. Everything works. It doesn't burn a drop of oil. The transmission works flawlessly. Everything electrical works (except the sliding doors) which I now open manually which I prefer since it's faster. The air conditioning works fine. The paint job has no rust or flacking or crazing. I have faithfully maintained the vehicle since it was purchased new. I have replaced tires, had alignments and balancing done. I replaced the alternator. I have also needed new batteries over the years...all expected replacements and repairs due to age and usage. But the engine and transmission are perfect. I hear a lot about how bad Kias are but that has not been my experience with this vehicle. So you can take all this for what is it worth. I have been buying Kias since 2003 and my experience with this brand has been a very good one. Just thought I would share this.
My inlaws have owned 2 Kia's and both had engine replaced under warranty. Engine and Tranny make the cars history. Also, my Kia Sophia back in 1999 started falling apart a month after buying it. From crappy engine, clutch and electric windows to the electrical system melting down under the dash to the window seals leaking. Bad news!

I daily a 96 Avalon with 200k as the family transport with 3 kids, 2 in car seats. Just had the timing belt serviced. When the 12 year-old has another growth spurt we will get Sienna.
First gen Avalons are such a treasure, hope you keep it in the family.
The great thing about Toyota is that the quality & reliability of my base model 07 ce Corolla is as good as that top of the line Avalon.

This car has needed the least repairs and lowest maintenance cost of any vehicle in my family since 1985.
That includes three other Toyota's ,89 Cressida, 90 4runner & 05 Sienna.
I have the same generation of corolla (03). Its my first car and I honestly dont know if ill ever have another car as good as it is. 6+ years and 80k+ (currently sitting at 225k) and ive never had to replace anything other than brakes and a couple hubs, although i did once do a couple of gaskets that were starting to weep. Truly convinced that only time can kill it. Those cars are legendary
I have a 06 manual ce and I love it. I bought it with 180k miles 2 years ago for college and it's been a bullet proof trooper. My previous 03 Sebring with half the miles was a pos that constantly broke down. Probably the best 2k I've ever spent

Love your channel. I bought a 2007 Toyota Avalon for my Granddaughter. The first test drive sold me. The engine was strong, but the previous owner let so many things lapse for just basic maintenance. I put 1,000 in it to make it safe and road worthy and now she wants something NEW. Guess what, I'm now getting the Avalon!!! I'll be putting another 3,000 into it to upgrade the stereo and other things she never got done that needed doing. It currently has about 199,000 and the engine and transmission is showing no signs of going anytime soon. After the test drive I suspect it may have another engine put in, not sure, but it acted new. OMG it has a timing chain!!!! BONUS!
Last Friday I was at a Toyota dealership for a maintenance on my Camry and was very tempted to exchange it for a 2019 Avalon with 15k miles that they had in the lot.
I really enjoy my 2001 Avalon XLS. Purchased new from my local Toyota shop.
140,000 on my 21 year old car and it runs like a champ. My daughter owns a 2003 Avalon and my wife owns a 2006 Avalon. No issues whatsoever on my car. The ‘06 has had only minor work done. No complaints from this Toyota family.
My 2002 highlander v6 has 260,000 miles original engine and trans, minor repairs nothing more than a couple hundred bucks.
I have an 08 Avalon which has served us well for the better part of a decade. Going on 180k miles. They come from the factory with Irridium plugs which I've never had to change. Limited trim has the HID low beams which aren't super reliable. The only expensive bill I've had was the dual-zone core going out in the dash, only way to replace that is to pull the entire dash out. I replaced the blower motor myself, literally just open the glove box and you can reach the 3 bolts to drop it into the passenger footwell. 100% agree with the wizard on this.
I drove a 1995 Avalon for 10 years and over 200k miles. No issues except regular maintenance. It had a great comfortable ride, and adequate power from the 3.0 liter V6. I bet that thing is still running for somebody to this day.

I have an 09 Avalon with 250k miles that I’ve owned for 10 years and it still runs like a champ. Other than water pump replacement (which the failure was caused by me putting non OEM fluid it) and one ignition coil going out it’s been dead reliable. All I’ve done is oil changes and a transmission drain/refill. I intended to replace it this year but given the market I’ve decided to hold onto the Avalon for another year or two.
I drive a 2011 camry (same generation as this car) and In my opinion this was the best generation of toyotas. perfect blend between practicality and electronics.

Fun fact, the trim wood paneling is not plastic even on the dash, they carve the shape from real wood grain, and hydro-dip in a protective plastic finish. Look up the dealer price, hundreds of dollars per panel
Wizard,I bought my daughter a 2001 Toyota Avalon 5 years ago for her first car.I bought it at a local auction,all the bidders would pop their head in and see that it had 236K on it..I bought it for $600 including fees.It's still on the road today with 267k on it now.I've had to do usual maintenance and some small things like a bad coil,O2 sensor,cam solenoids.but that's it.It doesn't smoke,leak,tick nothing.I know the timing belts will be it's death but until then she loves it.I am a mechanic I just don't feel like doing them,At that point I will buy her something newer.
it's a non interference engine, so if the timing belt breaks, just replace it

I have an 03 Camry i4 with 201,000 miles that is only now needing some work. The flex pipe for the exhaust is all but shot but other than the regular changing of fluids and plugs, new water pump, normal stuff , I haven’t had to do anything intense in the maintenance department. Best $2,500 I ever spent and it still gets 26-30mpg and is a life saver right now with gas being so expensive. I’d take this car on any journey across the Midwest.
I drive a 2007 Avalon, bought in 2012 with 61K miles and paid $16,000. Best car ever. Currently 168K miles. It is a beautiful dependable car I hope to drive till I die. I am 69 years old.
Ditto. I purchased my 07 Avalon XLS in 2012 for $16k w/ 32k miles. 10 years later at 101k miles still riding great and can’t justify buying another car any time soon. My mechanic (toyota) mentioned to me and my wife, this year and model is one of the best and not to sale it.😊
Had 07 avalon as my first car. Loved it Loved it Loved it and road triped it everywhere across America. Roomy, quiet, comfortable, quick enough, good on gas for what it is, and reliable. Had to sold it when the evaporator start leaking. 2000 job to rip the dash just didn't make sense. Can't live without AC in texas
Love the Avalon & was in search of one but I ended up buying a 2010 Lexus ES 350 Base Model a few years ago & have zero regrets. Toyota makes incredibly reliable cars, I will never buy another manufacturer's wheels.
I have a 2010 es350 and It drives smoother than brand new Mercedes I've tested l.. the only problem is the gas mileage isn't good but it is a V6. Very comfortable car, ice cold AC!

These cars are immortal. Never break down, just keep rolling on. I have a cousin that owns a 2000 Avalon with 240k miles. Against my advice he seldom changes the oil (hasn’t changed it in about 30k+ miles) or does any regular maintenance. The struts are blown, brakes are warped to hell. But it keeps going.
@jeepthing98 I dunno, I kinda hope he continues to neglect it so he learns the hard way. Also I’m really curious on how long this car will last with zero maintenance. The only “maintenance “ he does is occasionally add oil, but it’s never been changed the whole time he’s had it.

brother, tell him to swap to full synthetic oil, do a trans flush, and get struts, brake pads and rotors. not that expensive of a repair. can get 4 oem struts for around $300 and brake stuff is like ~$250. trust me, it will make a world of difference
Don't switch to full synthetic at 200,000 miles...you'll be looking at oil leaks. Research this and you'll see. @@jeekboi
I bought a 2014 Avalon Hybrid in Limited trim as a certified used car. It’s up to 95K miles, and it has been amazing. I have only had to perform routine maintenance like oil changes, tires, and brakes. It’s reliable and actually fun to drive in the mountain twisties.
I have a 2007 Avalon, bought it in 09 with just over 20k miles. Without a doubt the best money I ever spent on a car. I've done the maintenance religiously, actually I change the oil and filter every 3k miles. The only modification I've done is to remove the plastic engine cover. I like the look and sound of the engine, especially during hard acceleration and the rpm's get above 5k. There's a couple other things I really like. Self leveling headlights and reclining rear seats. Her name is Blue, as of today she's got just over 89k miles. It's roomy, comfortable, quiet, on the highway 30 mpg is average. I'm well into my 60's and I have no intention of ever buying another car, although my mechanic tries to buy her every time she's in for service. By the way, several of my family members tried the cheap route and bought GM vehicles with the 3.6, they're having some regrets. I'm happy, happy, happy 😊

It’s a great choice vehicle. It should last you well past 300k marker for sure. Of course, it’s no speed demon but it will get you from point a to point B.
@jbvilla82 It may not be a speed demon compared to some of the newer sports cars, but it is surprisingly quick and powerful. From 40 mph if I floor it to pass another vehicle, it spins the tires as you go around and by the time you pull back into your lane the Avalon will be hitting 80 mph. I don't know what the top speed of this car is, but I've had it up to 130 mph and she was still pulling. That was as fast as I wanted to go. Something else about the Avalon is the aerodynamic shape of the body causes the car to feel more planted to the road as your speed increases. I can't say enough about how good this car has been.
I have one! I welded a trailer hitch on mine, and Paul ATVs, and JetSki‘s with it! 200,000 miles on mine and no problems. I bought it with 58,000 miles on it.

I just inherited an 02 Avalon with 98k. It was garaged every winter and received every bit of maintenance by age instead of miles. My aunt and uncle even kept every receipt for service in a folder that came with it. Yes, even the timing belt was done a few years back. The window sticker was in there too; they paid $27k for it new.
I just had a silver avolon in the shop today. The owner attempted to do a tune up and somehow sucked rags through the intake port. It came in misfiring on the center cylinder on the back bank under the intake manifold. I sold plugs and gaskets to get to it. Replaced plugs and moved the coils around put it back together to find that it still misfired on cylinder 3. Tore it back down did a compression check and nothing on #3. It was after I tested compression that the customer admitted to the rag being sucked through the engine. I soaked the valves with PB blaster put a leakage tester on it and physically blew out the shop rag stuck in the valve seat. Put it back together and it quit misfiring on cylinder #3. Customer was happy that the engine did not need to be removed and the cylinder head gone through.
You're one of the few mechanics who manages to modify a verb with an adverb and an adverb with another adverb. You mom and dad raised you well! And you must have paid attention in English class. One huge thing you should have mentioned is the VVT-I line on bank one. It should be replaced with an all metal line.

Just bought a 2006 Avalon Touring for 7k with 43k miles on it. One owner who passed away. Very well maintained, had all the records. Has some scrapes and dents So smooth & quiet on the highway, it's actually relaxing.
But I've never owned a car this wide and long. Driving & parking in-town, I was having some second thoughts, especially since my son is going to learn to drive on it and commuting to community college. This great video reminds me why I bought it, and should hang onto it!
I’d say what it makes those more magic than Audis, Mercedes and anything else fancy is that *Toyotas are built to last.* They are friendly to their owners.
While other fancy cars look cool, drive fast and all the stuff that gets the attention of people, they don’t last or require high costs to do so.
And Toyotas(as well as other japanese cars) do not turn your bank account into a hurricane.
Not only that, but if you ask me,reliability is a luxury.
I think most of the jags with the 4.2 are also very reliable, I wouldn’t own an audi or mercedes before a 4.2 jag, (not newer ones with the 5.0) we had toyotas before and they were good on reliability but just love jags and their uniqueness, quality etc, the older ones gave them a bad rep, the XKs and XJ8s, especially XJ8s are beat up all the time by neglectful owners with over 200k and the engines still run and beautiful interiors hold up well

My dad had a 2000:bought brand new. He stopped driving in 2019 and I bought it off him for $3500 and 108,000 miles. Now at at 147,000 and the car is bone stock original. Oil changed every 3000, tranny every 30K. It drives like it just drove off the showroom floor. It was supposed to be the extra car, but I love driving it.
The XLS models also have the dual mode shifters, that allow you to shift like a manual transmission. That plus the engine make our 2007 Avalon an absolute ball to drive!

I don't think I've ever skipped a car wizard video?? This was the exception. As soon as I saw it was a Toyota Avalon video? I knew there weren't gonna be any issues to address. Yup they're boring. But I've owned one and done essentially nothing other than oil changes and tires over the last 14 years. Perfect car low maintenance trouble free. Highly recommend this particular Toyota.
Love my 2011 Avalon, looks better than this first facelift and it’s been pretty much bulletproof.
Only downside is the suspension can start to wear about 100/120k
There is no car ever made - past, present or future - that won't need things like bushings, control arms and/or ball joints, shocks, brakes, tires, hoses, etc every so often. 100,000 miles is the typical life of a shock absorber in ANY car.

I liked the first-gen Avalons with the bench seat and column-shift automatic. Weird to see that in a Toyota, but it should tell you who they were marketing the car to.

The first and second generations were better design wise in my opinion. The 3rd gen was a little too much like the Camry and even solara. yes I know they are based off each other. But there was still a lot of distinction in the interior. After that, they seem to have found their footing. Too bad the Avalon is no longer being made :(

I was just gifted a silver 2007 Avalon XLS by my aunt. Her parents had bought it brand new and then gave it to her and then she in turn gave it to me. Has 185,000~ miles on it and I love this thing! They kept all the records of maintenance as well and kept it very clean. It's the fanciest car I've ever owned, and the biggest!
Very good car but not a perfect car. Mine has had a perfect drivetrain and a quiet, comfortable ride.
But on the negative side, the AC is leaking at the evaporator and will cost about $2500 to repair due to the very inaccessible location. Two of the door locks failed but this can be a relatively easy and cheap repair. The rear sunshade mechanism is broken and not worth fixing so I forced it down and pulled the fuse so no one could accidentally get it stuck halfway up. And finally the hands-free phone link and the navigation system are archaic and hard to use and you can't get updated maps.
Other than that, it has been great.🙂
My 13 Highlander is at 124,000 and I’ll I’ve done is oil change, tires, and brakes. Literally nothing else ever. Also still in beautiful condition, even after the NY winters.
These cars of that year are MEANT TO LAST. Very good and reliable cars. Easy to work on and still fast

I have an '09 Avalon and '05 ES330, both in nice shape. Where I work I have been asked by two different guys if I want to sell them. I never had that happen when I drove Chrysler products.

My brother has an 06' Avalon w over 350k miles.. still running strong and smooth as ever. I've got an 08' w 177k that I paid only $3,700 for. I love the heated n cooled seats and it's got so many other convenient features. Even the rear seats recline. Best bang for the buck for sure!

I worked for Toyota when the Avalon was released. The Avalon was designed to be the low end Lexus. Instead, Lexus took a Camry and made the ES series and Toyota got the Avalon. Toyota got the better car for sure.
If you worked for Toyota then you would know that the Lexus ES350 or 330,300 were NOT camrys they are Avalons with more noise insulation and high end interior materials. It must have been the 90's since your position at Toyota

I have a 2005 toyota corolla CE with a 5 manual that sat for a very long time before my grandfather purchased it, when he passed away i inherited the car and at the moment it is sitting at 69,000+ miles, and still runs great. All i have done is wash it, change and refill the liquids, check and change the brake pads if need be and make sure the tires aren't flat and have been enjoying it.
The reason that old people drive these cars is because they are experienced, they have been through it and heard it all already. “I want some things that will last me out of here“
I currently daily drive an 01 XE Avalon my folks bought brand new. The thing runs like a top with 289k miles on it. Yay proper maintenance. It has the 3.0 motor, new shocks all around, a full tune up at 220k. The thing does not miss a beat. I love this car. My only complaint is the blend door that does not work due to cigarettes lol. Just buzzes and will randomly buzz driving hehe. Love you Mom!!!
My grandma bought one just like this new. Had bbs rims from the factory somehow. She just sold it last year with 250k miles and got another new Toyota.
Car Wizard, you'd be proud of me... earlier this year I flew to a city about an hour away (in New Zealand), then hitch-hiked for 2 hours to meet the (elderly couple) owners of a year 2000 Toyota Avalon, 100,000 km (about 60,000 miles), fully serviced, immaculate interior, just such a sweet V6 engine. Cost was $4k (in NZ dollars) or about $2k in US dollars. What a bargain. They are so smooth-running and reliable. Only thing to remember is to get them replenished every 5,000 km with synthetic oil as otherwise they tend to get sludge collecting inside the engine. I recommend these cars - far from exciting, but so nicely built and easy to drive. I owned a Lexus LS400 about 10 years ago but prefer the Avalon.
These third-generation Toyota Avalon's are excellent full-size sedans in the used vehicle market, because I am a fan of them. I am hoping that the Car Wizard will do another video on a reliable, used vehicle. For example, a 2005 Mitsubishi Endeavor mid-size SUV, because these vehicles are much more reliable, compared to the older Montero Sport's and any Isuzu vehicle in the used market.

I have a 2007 Avalon Limited. Mine has been to the moon & back with 383K miles on it & not to mention the few nights that it’s been idling while at Rest Stops. I bought mine when I was at my lowest in life. The serpentine belt snapped while leaving Birmingham to drive back home 40 mins away & still kept going(non-interference engine). The car took me safely across the country & back with 0 problems & will keep going until the wheels fall off or if I somehow manage to get it to a million miles.
With value being irrelevant, if I were just choosing a car to drive every day for the next couple years, I'd choose this over any of Hoovie's "super" cars.
In 2008 I purchased a new Toyota Solara convertible. I was driving on a twisty hilly road, dry pavement, and I touched the (anti-lock) brakes to slow down for a curve (I was only doing around 45 - I don't go any faster on this road) and the brakes locked up. Mentioned it to the dealer service manager and his attitude was 'Don't worry about it'. I got rid of it after about a year of ownership.

One of the most undervalued 04-06 vehicles today, Tundras go for $10-15k, while a good similar Sequoia can be had for $6-8k.
I have an '05 that I'm in love with. about 180K on it. I get maintenance and put gas in it. I had one injector and an alternator replaced. This one of the best cars I have ever owned. The headlights can be fixed with very little effort. I do family and friends every year on a variety of cars. they're easy to do. If you want I'd be happy to tell you haw to fix them. I like your show, good job.
i own 2. a '06 and '12, and the Gen 3 avalons are my fav. They are uber dependable and drive great. .. very fast, very smooth, and cheap to own

In the process of acquiring a 2016 Avalon Touring. 59K miles. Expect delivery next Tuesday. Both my '05 Mustang and this car should outlive me. I am just starting my eighth decade on planet earth. My oldest son, who works as an estimator for the local Toyota body shop owns a Tundra and just bought a 2022 Avalon Touring (three days ago). Rode in it for the very first time today. Smooth as silk and and sweet as apple pie.
Got a 2006 Avalon with 260,000 miles for a friend of mine. We replaced the struts, plugs, and headlights. Also serviced the transmission for him. They really are awesome cars.
I have a 2000 Avalon that I've had for years and has 300,000 miles and all I do to it is change the brakes, tires an oil once in awhile.
European car brands have a psychological problem with high mileage. The average ownership period of a car in Europe, whether bought/leased or a company car, is four years. Average mileage per year is less than 10,000 miles. So, by the time the car hits 100k miles, it's likely to be on its third or even fourth owner. The company doesn't care as 1) they don't build that model any more, and 2) anything that goes wrong can be blamed on the previous owners. Some Mercs and Volvos have done enough miles to go to the Moon and back, but those were built in the 60's. Current models? Nope.
Not enrirely true. Volvo's from the '90's also last; I myself had a1995 Seat Toledo (brother of the Golf II) diesel: 300.000 miles without any problem, total cost of repair and maintenance $0,01/mile ; same story for a 1999 Peugeot 406 Break diesel: 250.000 miles without problems.
Mercedes 190 is also legendary reliable and lasting; it was the last MB designed to live forever.
@@janvanhaaster2093 I'll allow the Daimler and the Volvo, but a Peugeot? How many times had the engine and the bodywork been replaced? Theseus' Paradox is the only way a 406 would survive that long. A 504, maybe. But not a 406 without extensive surgery.
