The Italian Gangsters seemed, for a short time, like compassionate, loving human beings in this scene, so moved by the music. An amazing contrast to all their previous threats and killings. The soundtrack choices for this movie are exceptional; almost TOO good: how did the music editors get it THIS right? There are many Goodfellas trivia/inside story YTs and blogs, etc. however, none go into any detail about the music aspect of the film.
I've never understood how people can reduce themselves to one single genre of music. I understand preferance will always be there, sure, and that's fine, but I don't get why you're surprised you like a music that's vastly different in style to what you normally listen to, like it's almost a sin that you do, or like you're betraying you're own sense of identity by doing so. You see it all the time "I'm a metal head but i love this" Yea, so what? Good music is good music. Stop confining yourself to your own sense of identification. I'm sure you'd find it's not just a one-off and there are many more songs of the same genre you'd like if you get shit out of the way.

Jerry Vale was born Gennaro Louis Vitaliano in the Bronx, New York, to Italian immigrant parents, and grew up in the Wakefield section of the Bronx which at the time was composed mainly of Italian-American families. In high school, to earn money, Vale took a job shining shoes in a barbershop, singing while he worked. His boss, Vito Veneziano, liked the sound so well that he paid for music lessons for the boy. Vale started singing in high school musicals and at a local nightclub. Still a teenager, he left school to work in a factory as an oiler alongside his father. Vale's early nightclub performances led to additional shows in the early 1950s, including one lasting for three years at the Enchanted Room, a club in Yonkers, New York. When Paul Insetta (road manager for singer Guy Mitchell and hit songwriter) heard him there, he signed him to a management contract and further coached him. Insetta arranged for Vale to record some demonstration records of songs he'd written, and he brought them to Columbia Records. Guy Mitchell introduced Vale to Mitch Miller, then head of A&R at Columbia Records. Vale signed a recording contract, with Insetta as his manager for many years to come.
I like how Henry is mesmerized by this performance. You can tell in his face that he is resonating with the meaning of this song about being in denial of his lust for other women.

This short scene here was my in my opinion is the most important and yet most unnoticed one. It showed a humane side of these blood thirsty butchers. That even no matter how gory the life was, there was still some ability to appreciate beautiful things in life.

I love this kind of music and I'm 15. Jerry Vale was the first singer that got me into this type of music. The first song I heard was You Belong to My Heart and from there I started expanding out to different songs and different singers like him. He's honestly one of the few people I admire. With this scene: One could make the argument that Henry Hill was genuinely moved by the performance - which informed his decision to bang his Goomar - but in a way that's supported by a sort of romantic idealism. For better or worse: This solidifies SOME humanity in the Henry Hill character. He's certainly nowhere near perfect (or even decent) and a cad for cheating on his wife...but for a man caught in a world of ruthless murderers and psychopaths; he's comes off as looking like the best version of a REAL person that the Mafia could ever hope to produce. Both Carbone and Tommy are largely guarded and unaffected by the moment, as they see it as something that they just have to do to get what they want (i.e.: bang the girls). They only ever need to honestly react to things that incite anger, or give them a reason to defend. With everything else (wives, kids, crew, etc); they can just go through the motions to reach their personal pre-determined goals. Hits are nothing but business, Stealing is Eating, which dovetails into Cheating is Eating...that constant equation is the void, staring back; their persistent engagement in that equation is them, blinking as it stares back. And every blink means more and more of your soul erodes, until the point where the only cathartic release left in your life is trowin' someone a beatin'...
I remember going out to caberet nights and restaurant nights like this where everyone was dressed up and danced properly into the small hours. Magical and I'm so glad I remember even though I was a boy then

i think this scene is supposed to kinda reinforce the idea that henry isnt a sociopath but tommy is. henry is clearly moved while tommy is thinking about something else
