Cub Cadet Mower Deck Replacing Idler Pulley

- Today's video addresses a simple technique for replacing the idler pulley on a 26 hp Cub Cadet 48'' mower deck. This is not a video for the seasoned or well experienced homeowner, its for those less familiar with routine maintenance. The same process can apply to many many other brands with slight variation. With care, a rubber tie down can be used to hold the breaker bar or ratchet in place if there is no place to block it with a piece of wood as shown in the video.
Many simple repairs like this can be accomplished by the owners themselves. However to some people the repairs seem too daunting to attempt. My suggestion, if you are physically capable, is to investigate first what the issue is and try to determine if you have the weapons in your own arsenal to attack the repair before calling for service. Pick up and delivery alone can be 50 dollars or more. As always, though know your limits, because there's always the possibility of doing greater damage to the unit than the problem was originally. I just picked up another mower from a friend. It's only 6 years old and the deck is rusted through so bad you can't even mow with it without it flexing so bad the blades hit each other as well as the sides. LOL Its a good running 20 hp single but they went ahead and bought a new one. Sooooo.....what am I gonna do with the motor......? I don't know either. Yet. LOL

Mower decks and ground engagement tools wear out faster than anything.
Having a dealer as a friend is cool.
I never park any of the vehicles back near the little bit of fence row. Mice ate the antilock brake wires off the Somoma.
I've had mice attacks several times over the years. That '94 in the background was the worst though. They ate the wires off the electronic box all the way up to the metal on my '85 Ford though. Dang, they are worse than squirrels for damage. My buddy gives me quite a bit of stuff that is very useful.

The worst part over the years was solving the alignment problem with the dual drive belts. Yeah, spare parts come in quite handy on occasion.
Man yeah Mr Wendell!! Somehow I just knew there wouldn't be a fancy new package with a new idler in it used here😁 Nope got the spare bucket of parts out and found not one but two perfect matches and one almost perfect!! I am the same way, worry more about the mechanics of the equipment rather than the frills of them! Always said, chrome don't get ya home!! 🤦🤦🤣🤣🤣 I bet the Mrs is gonna be tickled pink now, her mower is ready for another several years!! Hahahaha...this was a 'pennies on the dollar' repair if there was one !! Now where did THAT come from you might ask....well, I have this friend that's gonna make some T--shirts..... LOL I agree, mechanicals over prettiness is the important option. You can use a bunji cord in lieu of the wood block, but ya might get slapped in the face if it slips. LOL The Missus is quite happy and spent 4 hours on it yesterday trying to get ahead of the growth !! I've got her to where she too can pick up on strange noises or 'feels' to her car. She's tipped me off to tread separations as well as the brake squealers and actually a wheel bearing one time. Back when she was working it might be a month between the times I'd get the chance to drive her car so I always took her tips serious. Thank you once again for the early morning visit Nelson. Seems like sealed bearing is one of those good idea or bad idea. Glad you have a friend that have parts for you.
Well, I can't complain about 18 years out of a permanently lubed idler !! My buddy sells tons of Cub Cadets and a few years back took on a second line of Mahindra utiity tractors too.

Cool David. Some are very easy to change out. Others are rusted/oxidized so bad at least ONE of the bolts will twist off. LOL But that's the way it goes.
They sure don’t make them with pride and like they use to.....companies don’t care about there reputation.....everything is ok when you can fix them yourself....them spare parts sure come in handy....CHEERS
It's all that thought to just get 'em out of the warranty period, then sell an upgrade if offered or another new one. Keep that money in circulation....that's the name of the game. I like spare parts too.

She knocked it dear yesterday sitting the seat for about 4 hours to get ahead of the grass !! We've had soooo much rain the last two weeks and boy has the grass shot up. Crazy growing for August.
@@tractorman4461 good morning that's a lot of mowing and same here we have had lot of rain here as well I have a rain gauge and mark down the rain fall that's what you do when your old and retired lol since the 10th of March we have had 589 mm = 23.1 inches but hardly any forest fires this and that's a good thing the fields ate wet I had a guys cut and old field for me yesterday we was working up the road so I didn't have to pay for the machine it was a big excavator with cuts head on it he charges 250 a hour I know the guy that operates it he did it for 2 hour but was more than that nice to see the old field cleaned up we cut hay there when was a kid going to leave it for a year and when we get dry weather I'll get a bull Dozier in and level it off he couldn't do a real good job because it was so wet and was cutting up the field but looks much better than all grew up in bushes you couldn't even walk there they was so thick way to much for the tractor and bush hog or me with the power saw I try a couple with my bush saw I would be the there for ever you probably think I am writing a book with this big story lol nice morning here I thing it's good day for the wing or the Shadow to come out of the shed a burn some gas haven't been out for a week and the season is getting shorter you and the misses have a wonderful weekend take care sorry for the big story talk later
@@tomfillmore9710 That's good to get the field cleared out of all that scrub brush. It's amazing how fast mother nature begins the reclamation process ain't it. Good thing your buddy got in there and got it done for free !! That's a hefty price per hour, but then again I can't imagine the cost of that machine either.

Wow, I godda catch up and I’m doing it now! I’ve been working on my Craftsman 151/2 horse Kohler. Got a new air filter, spark plug and starter. So a month or two went by and it started fine before. So I have no manual and online ain’t much help but I think it maybe the points, which means pulling the fly wheel. Now I probably have the tools, some here some there, some metric and some others. Well I just don’t have a great place to work. Anyway, my old 1985 Wheelhorse after nearly a year started right up, a 11.5 Briggs. Well more writing as I catch up on all the 44 Adventures I’ve missed! This is DaveyJO and I’m on to the next vid!
You might wanna check and see if there's an electronic module for the Craftsman... I had an old Stihl with points and one day I walked into my buddy's shop and told him what I needed. He tossed me a little black thing with a couple wires and told me to hook it up !! That thing NEVER missed a lick and was still running like a champ when it was retired to the shelf years later. I bet that thing will still run. As a matter of fact I have yet another bigger but older Stihl that lost spark....hmmmm now I wonder if that one will work in both. LOL Oh well the weather ain't cold enough yet to be thinking of cutting wood. We was talking grass cutters wasn't we...?? LOL Take care and have a wonderful evening my friend !!

Good video Wendell. I’ve watched some lately about spindle housings and taking one guard off each upper and lower bearings so they will take grease.
Hmmmm....I only grease the zerk fittings on top of the bearing towers. I might have to look into what you are watching. I gotta admit though, in 18 years I can only remember replacing one tower so far....but I've got spares ready !!

Curious is you have trouble keeping the deck level on that one? The 50 or 52 inch Cub we had, the deck would not stay level, always lopsided and uneven grass. Didn’t have to bump it either to be out. Ran it and hated that thing for 7 yrs, until getting a JD.
No that hasn't been an issue for us on this mower. Its actually a hydraulically lifted deck, so there may be some differences in the way its mounted as compared to a mechanically lifted deck.
Nice video, my problem is that on taking my 42" deck off two springs came off and I dont know where they go . I have watched countless videos and none show the springs. It's not the one that is part of the cable that engages the blade but, It has to be part of it because I cant get it engaged. Help please .
Try using this link to find a parts diagram for your specific deck. The pictoral diagram of the parts might be the easiest way to find their attachment points. I'd have a tough time putting into words exactly what would need to be described. I have the the same filing system as you tm44. Buckets of parts and always a couple of junk drawers in the garage. Never know when your gonna need a spring, a pulley, a bolt, or whatever. And like you I have to pour everything out cause if you happen to what you need, its always in the bottom of the stash. LoL
Hahahahaha....I got junk all over the place Dean. Too much sometimes. But it sure makes it easy on the pocketbook when it comes to repairs. Yep, always on the bottom...LOL
All the bearings are bad on my woods RM finish mower idler pullys and cand find any bearings for them. Where do you get yours
I've had good luck with taking the i.d. and height of the idler plus the outside dimension and head to the auto parts store. It helps to have a friend behind the counter. I also have a cousin that's been behind the counter for 30+ years and he is my 'go to' guy for hard to locate parts. I also spend a bit of time on FB groups looking for specific brand parts. Good luck with your search.
Is there supposed to be any up and down movement on the pully that moves when you engage the blades. My belt keeps jumping off an I am not sure how to fix it. I just put on a new aftermarket belt. And only one pass around my yard and The Thing jumped off and frayed and broke. Any suggestions?
If you are talking about the actual mower deck that the belt is breaking on, I'd check two things first: 1) make sure the idler pulley is perfectly horizontal with the mower deck. The deck flexing will cause the idler to run crooked with the belt and that will toss it off. 2) Bad bearings on the idler pulley will do almost the same thing because it'll flop around. Bad bearings MAY cause the idler to move slightly up and down, but one worn that bad should be noisy. They are simple to change. I hope that helps.... Oh, I forgot.... The weakened deck will 'flex' due to the pressure exerted by the belt spring tensioner and cause the idler to run 'off' while in operation. That was the reason I reinforced the deck area like I talked about in the video.

I would suggest removing the pulley and taking it to any repair shop. They should be able to match it easily. If its just an idler pulley, the two things are the outside diameter of it and the inside diameter of the bearing. If its the whole bearing tower that holds the blade on the bottom, they are usually available on amazon for the major mowers, and many of the shops may have replaceable towers for various brands in stock. I hope that helps you out.
HI! Great video! I wonder how you were able to figure out that the engine was not square with the pto. I had a similar problem with those belts and I would appreciate if you could explain how you resolved the issue. Thank you!
I pulled the cowl off and used straight edges to find the issue. It wasn't easy at all !! The repair was simple enough by adding washers under the front of the motor to get correct alignment though. That too was trial and error. The problem then was the cowl would not align with original mounting locations and I had to make special brackets out of 16 ga material to make it work. Its not pretty as factory but it is functional and I am still on the same set of drive belts as the day I completed the alignment. It would have been a lot easier to run it without a hood, but this is the mower the Missus uses so I wanted it to look as good as possible.

Hey Tractorman 44! I have a Cub Cadet LT42. It's about 3 year old. Once it been used for about 1/2, something starts squealing. Almost sounds like a wheel to me. Their some sort of plastic wheel on a steel shaft. No grease fitting. Think it's a wheel issue or something else? Pulleys seem to be in good condition. Thanks for any input!
It squeals while the deck is running or not. I hear it while driving around.
@@Cooch5RCIt kinda sounds like the drive belt itself could be slipping on the drive pulley on the motor....?? But if you're thinking its a plastic wheel, spray some PB Blaster on the shafts on by one to see if it goes away. A belt slipping will start out as a chirp, chirp, chirp then as the belt heat up it will go to a continual squeal. Hard for me to tell without actually being on the machine. (-:

If yours needs an idler pully, they are easily obtainable. The thing is it needs to be the same diameter because that will effect the belt tension. Then you need to make sure the diameter of the mounting bolt hole is the same as the original. Walmart, Home Depot and Lowes. If your issue is a bad bearing in on of the towers, they too are easily available for most major homeowner brands of mowers. Amazon is a good source as well.
Well that was an easy one wasn't it, my Dad and I are mowing on mid 90's cubs with 54 inch decks and haven't had an issue (yet) but they are starting to get tired. Lucky for me I have welder so we keep things going as long as we can, nice fix Sir!!!
They definitely take a bit of maintenance. I've a friend that's on his fourth new mower since I bought this one in '04. You and your dad stay on top of the little things like you should to keep 'em working good for so long.
