I was always interested in why the symbol of Destruction was a destroyed Tower … specifically why it was a Tower of all things. I was very quickly led to the Tarot cards, more specifically the Tarot de Marseille variant. Card #16, The Tower: sudden, disruptive revelation, and potentially destructive change. This cards is usually depicted with a Tower in some manner of state, but the Tarot of Marseille is, as far as I can tell, the first Tarot deck to depict the Tower as having been destroyed by either Lighting or being struck down by flames coming from the sky/heaven, with the upper half of the tower being split off and crumbling. Looking more into why so many Tarot Decks even have Tower to begin with, introduced me to an alternate name, The House of God, which still depicts a Tower-like structure being destroyed. Even the Tarot of Marseille has this alternative name. This is where one of the main true reasons why the Tower is often depicted alongside destruction. The inspiration for the Tower often comes from biblical stories where God is delivering judgement upon cities for their sins. The inspiration for the Tower that does not come from biblical stories were stories about noble families constructing tall Towers within their Homes so they can look down upon the Town, the Tower became a symbol of pride, but these tall Towers often attracted lightning to them, so these Towers were struck down by lightning every now and again. It’s suggested that whenever a Tower of a noble family with unlikable reputation was struck down, the people of the Town would be rather amused by this show of karmic judgement. Towers also depict a sign of authority or control over the town, and if this authority became corrupt or tyrannical, then the town would often revolt against this authority, the Tower is usually built as a guards Tower or something else of the similar sort, so these Towers are often destroyed last, symbolizing the authority officially being overthrown. As you can tell in both inspirations, a key contribution to the Tarot Card, The Tower, is the sense that judgement is being delivered, something wrong is being corrected. This is where I finally made a realization about not just Nanook, but the other Aeons as well. Lan sought to Hunt down the Abundance across the universe, ascended. Mythus wanted to obstruct the Erudition across the universe, ascended. Fuli wanted the memories of the universe, ascended. IX thought that everything in the universe is pointless, ascended. Nous learned everything about the universe, ascended. Akivili wanted to explore the universe, ascended. Ena wanted to control the universe, ascended, while Xipe wanted to work with everyone in the universe, ascended and assimilated Ena. Tayzzyronth felt all alone in the universe, ascended. Qlipoth wants to protect the universe, ascended. Idrila saw the beauty was everywhere in the universe, ascended. And Nanook judged the universe, and ascended. This is probably why the Annihilation Gang isn’t very welcomed by Nanook. Nanook isn’t causing destruction for the sake of causing war, or bringing pain, or scaring the universe. Nanook is delivering Destruction because by ending everything, THEY are simultaneously ending all suffering. Suffering is wrong, ending this suffering is right. It’s possible that since Nanook came from a planet that always suffered and never got better, THEY probably saw that the only time someone’s suffering ended, was when their life ended. That’s the only solution to ending suffering that THEY are aware of. This is why The Tower symbolizes the Destruction, not as a force of violence, but as a force of judgement. For everyone who feels like this isn’t an acceptable form of judgement and therefore shouldn’t be considered as judgement. Everyone judges certain things differently and in a completely different manner. Nanook has experienced THEIR experiences, and made the final decision to make this judgement of THEIRS.
A little extra detail that may explain a bit more about Nanook that I nearly forgot to mention. Nanook is dead! Nanook is an Inuit name that means “polar bear”, however there is a story that involves an Inuit shaman, an Angakkuq, where a child was named Nanuq after their cousin. Unfortunately this cousin died, and the child felt like they themselves have died, so they had to go to an Angakkuq to change their name. The exact specifics of this is rather interesting but also not too necessary to get the point across. Nanook is the name of a dead person, the child who was originally named after them has since changed their name to something else. Another unique thing about the name Nanuq, is that it’s also the name of an Inuit God, a God of Polar Bears, apparently whenever the Inuit hunt down a bear, they have to follow some ritualistic rules, and it’s up to Nanuq if these rules have indeed been followed in order to decide if the hunt was truly successful or not. A reason why I’m diving into Inuit religion for Nanook is simply because it definitely relates to Nanook since the Inuits also believe that there are many worlds for the planet, a world for the living, a world for the spirits, and a world for the dead. From what I can understand, the world of the dead is like Limbo, spirits who have died but still have regrets in life. While the world for the spirits is like Heaven, this is ultimately where all souls go when they’ve found peace. The world of the dead, is called Adlivun … the homeworld of Nanook the Destruction. THEIR planet being named Adlivun could also suggest that my comment on Nanook being dead is more serious than I originally stated. Edit: for those curious, the kid who was renamed, was renamed to Qimuksiraaq.
@@TinkRomero My favourite myth is that polar bears were created from the middle finger of a woman whose fingers were cut off so she couldn't hang onto the canoe and drown when they pushed her into the water. There is more to the legend, but still, there is no bigger 'fuck you' than creating the species that still considers humans prey to this day.
@yadakakadu That story reminds me very much of Sedna/Senna, the Inuit Goddess of the Ocean. There are many stories of her origin, but the vast majority revolves around her father in a set of circumstances, ends up throwing Sedna overboard, and Sedna tries to get back on the kayak, only to have her father chop her fingers off. In most of these stories her fingers simply turn into the fish of the ocean, including the whales, seals, and other fish, it slightly varies for each origin story. Her middle finger turning into a polar bear is indeed quite a humorous show of giving the world your last middle finger. It also reminds me of the belief that Sedna and Nanuq are partners, not in marriage, but as forces of nature, Nanuq controls the Snow and Land, while Sedna controls the Ocean. Interestingly enough, in most stories, Sedna is considered the ruler of Adlivun, so … if Nanook the Destruction ever has a Sedna counterpart in HSR, I wonder just how significant that Sedna will turn out?

Does Nanook want to end all life or maybe destroy the fate of the universe/ universe's law? Or does Nanook just want to see which Destruction is stronger, THEIR or us? Destruction is one of the other things to handle the abundance aeon. Too much growth and life healing is also bad. Especially if it never stops. You become a monster. So you have to end it.
There is a high chance that if Nanook wins and doesn't destroy himself along with the Universe, he will become something like that in the next, on his own.
Ena being consumed by Xipe did not led to chaos consuming the universe and all order being gone. Nanook is war, but war is not Nanook - there will be still wars and destruction, but without him there won't be a concentrated effort to destroy everything for the sake of it
Let me translate it for you, before you continue representing the Destrucion like it was a facet of nihility. The Universe if fundamentally flawed. It must be eradicated before the next, hopefully perfect can be created. Conclusion 1: Since Fuli is collecting (stealing) memories to recreate the universe as-is after it's destruction, Fuli is Nanook's greatest enemy. Conclusion 2: Nanook would either destroy themselves with the Universe, or would transform into something analogous to an aeon of Creation. Conclusion 3: You failed to notice that Kafka said the Trailblazer will face, not fight Nanook, and that she only mentioned the best and worst cases. It is entirely possible (and narratively the most interesting IMHO) that the best outcome is when we face Nanook, we do not fight him, but change his opinion on the Universe being irreparably flawed. How do we do that? That is the interesting part. My bet is using you as a live sacrifice, but I don't think the devs would go there.
