Vintage N’ Rare Guitars in Bath sent us this 1954/1955 Fender Champ amplifier for restoration. Here we document the process and get to hear how it sounds. And if you like the amp, it’s currently for sale (May 2021)
Long recognised as secret recording tone monster in the studio, check out Ed's original demo at the end of the video to hear how monstrous tones can be conjured up to sit in a track using a small amp.
Ed used a 1954 Esquire and a 1964 Stratocaster. Amp audio recorded with a Royer R121 direct into UA Apollo 8XP into Logic., touch of reverb used for some tones courtesy of a stuning EBO Customs Reverb unit.

Uncle Doug does a similar "mod" to vintage caps...using the outer shell to preserve the vintage look while making the amp playable is a good thing.
There are a lot more of these Champs on popular recordings than you'd think, like Clapton's first album, and Duane Allman and Clapton using one on Layla studio sessions

Soo small! Cute! I have a 1978 I love, clean as a whistle! I gave it a weber that will take any gain I wanna give it. I love to plug in a 12" speaker as well.

I brought a mint ‘61 tweed Champ back from Wisconsin a few years back … used it for blues harmonica for awhile - then swapped it for a 335 reissue.
Wish I’d never let it go …😩

Great work ...unbelievable pre-replace speaker placement' shame about the output trans but these things need to be played ...ahh that tone and great demo with the 54 and 64s. Thanks for sharing.

One minor suggestion: next time could you flip the video around so the chassis view matches the layout of the amp? Super nit picky and not really an issue, since it was still really easy to follow along, great work!
Always gives me a pang when seeing videos like this: my very first amp, ever, was a narrow-face Princeton, purchased in my mid-teens for the princely ;) sum of CDN$40. Used it for years, but eventually went to Ring Music in Toronto (which still exists!) in the 1980s in trade for a Kramer 450G (I think it was). Possibly not my finest gear trade. Sigh. (And the Kramer's long gone, too!) Great video, btw! :)
I traded in a '64 blackface Deluxe Reverb for a solid state Earth head when I was 19. Why? They told me it was 100 watts, and besides, the Earth amp had built in fuzz!
And then I had to find a cabinet, and it wasn't any good either. The regret lingers to this day.
We do dumb stuff when we don't know.

Having a similar experience with one of my amps. Leaky coupling cap. It's nice having the original bits (especially when they're all mustard caps) but if they don't work, they don't work. I'd rather keep the valves safe

Please can I ask a question Huw, I am just preparing to launch a couple of pedals I have designed/created, I am based in the UK, just wondered if you know of a good supplier of wire suitable for pedals and also the vintage style cloth covered type of wire, as my current supplier had changed their supplier and is no longer available to me. Thanks for any tips/leads.
Thanks Gary. You could try Allparts UK or North West Guitars. Ebay can also be extremely useful. Also try RS Components and Rapid Electronics. Cricklewood Electronics can be useful too. Good luck with the pedals - H

Hey man, do you have a preference for preamp tube ona 5f1? Considering going octal for my current build. Or just trying a different 9 pin. Also do you think heavier o transformer = better bandwith?
