  • Five cyclists were attacked by a cougar while on a trail near Fall City Saturday afternoon.
A 60-year-old woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries to her face, neck, and jaw, according to the WDFW. The woman has since been released from the hospital.
“It jumped from the side of the road and latched onto her, and her friends were able to detach and fight this thing off," said Sgt. Carlo Pace, with the WDFW Police.
"They 100% saved their friend's life," said Pace. “They were able to pin down a good size lion with its claws and teeth and everything else under a mountain bike until we arrived.”

So you think that the millions of Californians that walk in the trails need to carry guns to protect themselves from mountain lions?
California mountain lion attacks on humans are extremely rare.
Approximately 20 confirmed attacks have occurred in the state over a century of record-keeping.
Only three of these attacks were fatal.

    • @tonyprice2256
      @tonyprice2256 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

@@ZennExile What you say could be true most of the time, but it always depends on the individual animal ans situation. Cycling is dangerous because on a bike you can never be the 'conflict'. You will always be the 'prey'. You are much better off on foot so you can face them and challenge them.
But that doesn't work in some cases. They are stealthy, and will always know where you are before you know where they are. They are very fast ambush predators. They can drop on you from trees, and will usually try to attack from behind, so you always need to be keenly aware at all times to avoid those potential situations. But usually, they don't see humans as prey. This is why attacks are so rare.
But there are a few situations where even if you are facing them, they may not back down. One of those could be a female with kittens nearby. Most real attacks on humans come from younger adolescent cats that are just starting to hunt on their own, and elder cats that may have become too slow or weak to bring down a deer with ease. They will get desperate for food and hunt easier prey such as penned in human owned livestock, human pet dogs or cats, and occasionally, humans themselves.

      2. Do not make eye contact and do not give them any compliments. Even innocent remarks can encourage them to pounce on you.
      3. Make it abundantly clear that you are in a committed relationship.

About 10 years ago here in the Bay Area, hiking on a popular trail, an older adult retired professor and spouse were attacked by a mountain lion, the animal latched on to the husband’s neck. The wife tried beating the cougar with a branch, the blows had no effect. Finally out of desperation she grabbed a pen from her
partner’s pocket and stabbed the cougar in the eye. It released her husband and ran off.Hospitalized and treated they survived. Pen mightier than the sword cliches ensued.

There was a litter of 3 cougars born last year in Hobart. The mother and cubs have been seen over the past year from Hobart to Snoqualamie to North Bend. The mother would have left the young not long ago and has come back to have another litter. The issue is an Iraqi man in the US on visa bought the property with the 150 year old protected wildlife preserve and refused to honor the protected area. He cut down the preserve and chased more than 80 elk out along with all the other animals living there. That preserve was the food source for these cougars. Now hungry the yearlings are attacking people along with the mother taking calves, goats, and sheep in the area. What this man did broke State laws and was a Federal Felony.

We have wolves here too, my scariest experience, with my 4 dogs, was with wolves, not a cougar. I never could see one during the attempted "attack", just something out of the corner of my eye, but they were surrounding us, I felt like we were lucky to survive, although maybe they were just curious or playing with us ⁉️ But I saw one of them, from that pack, the next day, and I've never seen anything in the wild that was so huge. My daughter saw it in a trap a few weeks later, from a hot air balloon❣️😢
We had a cougar in our town, a few years back, and we would see it anytime we went to one particular dog walking place between a low income apartment complex, and a freeway. My Wiemeranger loved to chase it, she was very aggressive toward it.
First time ever I saw it's face, lol, it was dark & I was walking dogs per usual, and I just saw very very large glowing eyes, thinking it was an injured deer, I approached to know how to help. The dogs were downwind and ahead of me on our usual route, I had a flashlight, and I was walking very slowly toward it, but, when l got within 4 yards, all the hair on my body stood up and I became terrified, at a gutteral level, and I backed away, slowly. When l got home my husband said, "were the eyes both visible"? And i said "yes", & he said "like a happy face drawing"? I said "yes", and he said "it was a predator".
I called state wildlife management when l saw coming from a trash bin the next week, in predawn hours, but they said there were no cougars in our state. The very next day on the front page of the hometown paper, was a picture of one eating road-kill less than a mile from where we would see it.
We saw it several more times, and found its habitat. My Weirmeranger almost caught it once...don't know what would have happened if she actually had, but I read up on self defense and it's not hard to fend one off, altho my dogs were my best defense.

The animal is deciding that one of you will die, be wise.

I have a picture of a good sized healthy looking cougar (better than a starving or injured one, this one looked well fed) taken by my trail camera from about 150 yards from where I type this. My rural property has a treed area by a stream, and I ride my bike or walk it daily. The time/stamp on the picture shows the cougar following my 10 pound dog and I up the trail, 10 minutes behind us. This was a couple years ago, and after we spotted it one day, surprised it, about 75' away. We all froze for a second, that Spike charged it...., the cougar freaked and ran off, with the dog chasing it out of sight, even though i was calling him back. The lucky bastard came back about 10 minutes later, untouched, acting all cocky. Since then I make a bit of noise when riding or walking the trail. Still damn spooky to think about.

Nearby in Florida the panthers have made such a come back they are having lots of kittens and attracting many tourists along the long nature trails.
My granddaughter and partner were camping in a fish & wildlife camp and attacked by a mother panther with her cub. Jaret always brings a small firearm when camping and he fired over the panther's head, as that is the normal thing. This was in the middle of the night and the panther continued to prowl around the tent, ignoring the sleeping dogs and sniffing for the humans. Finally Jaret was able to chase the cat off and my granddaughter was able to run to the truck and lock herself in with the dogs. But Jaret was alone with the big cat and the two of them played cat & mouse for 4 hours as he would turn off his flashlight only to see her charging again. Finally the cat gave up and left with her cub.
They called everybody in govt....fish & wildlife, the state, the police, the park...and nobody would touch it because the big cats are now a huge tourist attraction. The Florida panther is much the same as the puma out west. I would advise anyone going on those long hikes to carry a small firearm. These cats are having healthy kittens all over Florida.
