NYT article from May 2, 1994: "a 2 or 3-year-old female mountain lion, suspected of killing a jogger was shot to death today. The jogger, Barbara Schoener, 40, was mauled on April 23 as she ran along a path in the Auburn State Recreation Area in the Sierra foothills 40 miles northeast of Sacramento. Her body was found the next day buried, as cougars often do with their prey, under leaves and branches. Mrs. Schoener was the first person this century killed directly by a mountain lion in California. In 1909, a mother and child survived a mauling by a cougar but later died of rabies.
Not true. I lived in the Colorado mountains for 3 years. I never had the pleasure, but a neighbor who lived a 1/4 mile away saw 13 together at one time. 40 years later, I'm amazed that our dogs ever made it home every day.
I was living in CA in 94 when the woman jogger was attack and killed. The lion was shot, but what was weird, was that the go-fund-me to take care of the lion cubs was 10X larger than than the go-fund-me educational fund for the victims two orphan children.. Go figure
I was stationed in California at the time and I remember the incident. Yep, more money went to the lion cubs than the children of the woman. I also remember the bunny huggers blaming the jogger when the lioness was killed when it was guarding the joggers body.
In that fatal attack (the last in Northern California until yesterday), the jogger must have inadvertently come between a mountain lion mother and her cubs. There's no clue given as to why the mountain lion attacked the young men yesterday. The usual mountain lion reaction is to move away and hide until humans have passed.
Not really. It's the intelligence to build a firearm that keeps mankind at the top of the food chain. And when did being at the top of the food chain become a crime?
Can't blame the lion. They went willingly into the area hunting. The lion went into the area hunting. Then the clash. When hunting you got to stay aware and be ready for the other hunters.
For antler sheds. This means discarded antlers that are naturally shed by animals every year. SMH, don't worry, with overpopulation, the mountain lions will eventually take to the cities. Maybe then California will do something about it.
@@kirkoglesby6175there is no overpopulation of mountain lions in California. That is a myth that those who opposed the ban on hunting mountain lions created. The population of mountain lions has actually declined some in the last decade, with an estimated number between 3500-4500 state wide. And this is down from the pre mountain lion hunting band numbers. The reason there are mountain lion attacks is because more and more people are building homes in extremely rural areas that have always been the mountain lions’ territory. It isn’t that the mountain lions are coming to cities, but that the cities are going to the mountain lions. And a simple search about mountain lion population in California will confirm what I just posted.

Humans belong on the landscape as much as animals. People who seem to think humans are some unnatural alien invader to the planet are so odd to me. It's shocking because mountain lions don't generally attack humans.
It was a very bad idea because these animals have no fear of humans whatsoever. Here in Florida, if a cougar or bobcat sees you…..they take off running because they know we Floridians are armed and will protect ourselves if we have to. These wild animal attacks just don’t happen, unless it’s a nitwit security employee guarding a wild animal sanctuary and he goes over to the tiger enclosure to pet the big cat and make friends…..only to have his armed gnawed off and the tiger shot by the police. Those are the kind of wild animal attacks we have here in Florida. Just the Darwin Award winners who believe they can make friends with a 600lb. Killing machine……and attack can be viewed right here on TH-cam. The guy is screaming his head off as the tiger is chewing his arm off. Those are the kind of problems we have here in Florida.
Lots of dumb logic in here. No harm should come to the crackhead? Am I correct?
Why are we killing animals in their natural habitat? we are in their territory and need to respect that, they could have sedated it and relocated somewhere with less population. Im sorry for the kids. that's terrible. I hope for a full recovery of the one and peace for the other and his family.

I'm pretty surprised at how some people in the comment section are treating this. I mean, it did kill someone. Why are people acting like the death of the mountain lion is an equal tragedy?
I mean, it's tragic that someone died, but it's a mountain lion, not a serial killer. It's just doing what mountain lions do. What's the point of killing it?
Because animals cannot comprehend boundaries of civility. Mountain lion is gonna mountain lion. Like why does this make it ok to go out, hunt down, and execute animals for crimes that they fundamentally cannot understand?
What is wrong with all these stupid campers when they know in spring that all animals are out looking for food to feed their new cubs. Stay out of the woods in spring, it's the most dangerous time.
Because 99.999% of the time= no problems. Like trying to hide from an earthquake, if it is going to happen...it happens. Don't worry about it. I go in the woods all the time, wild animals run when they see humans- they know who the king of the woods is. This one was probably sick or something to cause this behavior.
Exactly. New cubs, New kits, all the babies are being born and mom is looking for food. Stay away from the woods, in the spring, unless you are carrying a weapon. The moms won't hesitate to kill if someone gets close to their litter.
So you think staying in the city is safer? Maybe on the roads? I mean, more people die in their own homes than die in the woods. You may want to think about that.
The comment "hikers need security", that amazes me. To be so unaware that you are not in your natural enviroment and that you are the threat to the wild life. Sad that someone lost their life.
I think you need to explain how two unarmed people out looking for shed antlers constitute a "threat" to apex predators? You come off as misinformed and condescending. A mountain lion stalked and preyed upon two brother out looking for antlers, that's what happened, it didn't feel "threatened", it dragged the poor guy off, why do you think it did that?
Hungry? Protecting its young? Defending its territory? Do you actually believe that a wild top predator can tell the difference between a benign "hiker" and a threat to its life or even a food source? If you can't I suggest you stay out of the areas where these animals might be. I get the impression you believe the animal committed an "evil' act.@@mikemelina7395
@@mikemelina7395 Maybe he was hungry or maybe he felt uncomfortable about the two brothers in his territory and was not sure that they were a threat. It’s not his fault. How was he supposed to know that they were harmless?
When people go into the woods where mountain lions and bears live, they need to understand that they're the invaders. The authorities murdered the mountain lion because it attacked two brothers even if they were not hunting like others do, it is a shame about the death of one of them and the mountain lion too. Maybe the lion thought that they were a threat, I don't know. Mountain lions and other wildlife are very territorial of course.
I will never understand why anyone would willingly go into the wilderness without a firearm, and I don't care what the laws state, it's simply common sense, especially if you live in an area where top predators are known to live.
The animals have unlimited area to hunt, but they're attracted to human areas because humans have pets, livestock, trash, etc. that attracts predators. People or no people, it all boils down to COMPLACENCY. Kind of like how there wouldn't be so many houses burn down in forest fires, if they weren't built in the middle of a forest. You have to take precautions; like clearing out the brush and dead vegetation, so the fires can't propagate as fast. Similarly, you should pack a weapon when you go into the woods, because animals will always look for the easy meal.
I'm not sure if they teach you this in American school but humans actually are from the "wild" and interacted and killed animals for oh,....millions of years. As a matter of fact, there are still humans right now as we speak who still live in the wild, interact with animals, and kill them for protection and sustenance. True story!

2:02. This guy is full of shyt. It's almost impossible to see a lion in real life. I have 9 trail cameras, and seen one live 3 times in 73 years. They don't want anything to do with humans. Come close to a den or cubbies, there will be trouble.
I use to gold dredge on the South Fork of the Yuba River outside of Grass Valley. I came across a couple, once on a trail and another on a river bar where I was camping. I just kept my eyes on them and backed away. Nothing happened.
Now they could have possibly left cubs without their mother. We ran into a mountain lion out hiking and we never turned our backs and walked backwards away from the direction we were headed and it left us alone.
You are a lucky guy. I have seen them at lease 4 times in the last 20 years. One was sniffing my fence on the outside of my back yard, at first I thought it was a Great Dane, then seen the tail and thought that's not the tail of a dog, then I seen the big cat face looking at me. My dogs German Shepherds was on the other side of the fence having a fit, I had about 120 foot distance from it, and was close enough to my house to make it safe if it charged me. I called the local police and schools since kids walk that way daily. I was told no biggie they see them all the time. That same report in Los Angeles would have made the news and there would have been posted warnings.
These mountain lions are vicious when they attack. A full grown mountain lion can leap from a squatting position over 16 feet high to perch on either an over hanging rock or onto a tree branch and clear over 40 feet in length when while running after prey while on the hunt. They’re stealthy in their approach and almost always attack from behind. In most cases you don’t even know they’re there. Very dangerous to say the least. Prayers for the family and these two boys.
This is sad and all, but there was NO need whatsoever to kill this animal for doing what animals do in their OWN habitat. This is just a revenge kill on a wild animal. So stupid
@@LunaLapin-ho5tk Maybe the news should tell the story better. The animal doesn’t deserve to die because it does what an animal/apex predator does… hunt. My question is, how far were they into the wilderness, and if far, did they put themselves in danger by doing so. Also, was it a female and were there cubs near by? It’s spring. I have so many questions.
Normal mountain lions do not attack or stalk humans. This mountain lion was no longer being a mountain lion when it attacked two humans, so it was put down.
When you go into their territory unprepared you are at fault. Not the animal. And contrary to what the happy hunter says the cats are not over populated. People are.
They have the largest habitat range of any North American mammal. They have tens of millions of acres to hunt, but they're attracted to EASY FOOD. Pets, livestock, trash, etc. We're not "invading" their habitat lol
One might say: "We certainly have too many people who think like you roaming the planet." The planet isn't overpopulated and if the WEF and George Soros types of the world have their way, it's likely we'll be underpopulated very soon. You don't think they're building fallout shelters and remote islands for the tax breaks, do you?
People aren't overpopulated, just further developed. They have the intelligence to make firearms and mountain lions don't. So anthropologically, it's all natural.
The thing of it is, people are moving and the area is building homes and areas. That's where the animals are free to roam. And if you're going to move in those kind of areas you're really should have your place. Fence stuff a note and not be even with a gun. You can do it. It's hard to stop a wild animal. It just has to be super careful. That's why I live in the city. I would never live out in a sticks.😢
Sorry for the loss. The local gentleman was correct. There never used to be problems like this with mountain lions. Since they were protected and hunting stopped, their numbers have increased to the point of overpopulation. Their natural food supply has diminished. That, coupled with drought, diminished habitat and climate change have pressured them to search for food and water in areas we would never see them under normal circumstances. They've been spotted roaming the streets of San Francisco, (fun!), and once, an elderly lady living in a genteel area of Palo Alto thought she saw a golden retreiver in her backyard tree. She lived only about a block from an elementary school. People who live in town have limited knowledge and no experience with wildlife like this. These beautiful, elusive wild animals are just that, wild. They aren't thinking about whether or not they should be politically correct enough to eat your pet poodle. They're just hungry. The policy needs an update. Either do TNR on at least some of them or allow a limited hunt.

Mrs. Schoener was the first person this century killed directly by a mountain lion in California. In 1909, a mother and child survived a mauling by a cougar but later died of rabies.

In that fatal attack (the last in Northern California until yesterday), the jogger must have inadvertently come between a mountain lion mother and her cubs.
Weren't they hunting? Cougars are so rare and need more protection, unlike us.
What is wrong with all these stupid campers when they know in spring that all animals are out looking for food to feed their new cubs.

Do you actually believe that a wild top predator can tell the difference between a benign "hiker" and a threat to its life or even a food source?
