Wow, they had iron smelters as far back as 788BC! Note that current historical records state that the Iron Age began around 1200BC in ancient India, Iran and Greece, following the Bronze Age collapse. The Iron Age only kicked off in Europe between 800BC and 500BC, depending on the location. This is a really great and important part of Kedah's history and should be preserved to the utmost extent.
For all we know South East Asia (Malay Archipelago in particular) had much more importance and its contribution World history and civilization. Already the pyramid in Indonesia is estimated to be much older than the Giza pyramids. By discovering such ancient sites and confirmation of its importance will inspire people of the region, and dispel the perception by Western orientalist and some other Asians, that they are backward people.
That is true! Not only iron producer, but Kedah tua was also the biggest exporter in the world at that time, imagine how rich the Malay Kedah Tua were. The empire was so generous and smart, they gave away the money to smaller kingdom around the Malay archipelago.

The reason why it wasn't was because of a poor foresight to move several structures from the original excavation sites closer to the Lembah Bujang museum, so people wouldn't need to travel a vast area to visit all of the archeological sites. This in turn proved to be blunder as it had failed the requirements of what a unesco site meant, which was the candi structures should not have been relocated from their original site. With unesco funding alone, a lot more excavation sites could have been unearthed (as there are still many excavation sites waiting to be uncovered)and there wouldn't have been a need to rely on state or federal funding.

Though bijih besi can still be found in the surrounding area in Sungai Batu. You have to dig a few feet under the ground to find them. Current most pessimistic estimation puts Gunung Padang to be at least 4,000 years old which is still significantly older than this Bujang site. Anyway, Just for your info, there's recent finding in Leang Karampuang, a cave painting dated to be 51,200 years old. Currently the oldest cave painting ever found on earth. Seeing this fact, I don't think Gunung Padang's 20,000 years of existence to be that far fetched.
Not to mention that later findings through different carbon dating methods, this Bujang Valley was more likely come from 2nd to 10th century AD. That 788 BC estimated earlier was deemed an outlier.

An evidence for advance civilation with Iron smelting tech at over a thousand years BC and it is a treated like an after-thought! Unbelievable!!! This proofs the keen intellect, ingenuity and industry of the Malay / Austronesian people BUT ... first of all the local population couldn't have created this civilization. Please look at the population of Malaysia now. The population statistics of 1911 showed there were 1.24 million malays. In 1840 the population of malays were less than 600,000. In the state of Kedah, the population was only about 40,000 in 1840. If we go back to 700CE, the population of locals ( Proto Malays) in Peninsular Malaysia would be less than 1,000 and Kedah would most probably had a population of 300 or 60 families. They were not malays but the Kensiu Sub tribe of the Negritos. Even when we calculate the population of South Thailand 14 provinces and East Sumatera, the population would be around 3,000 ( not focused) during the same period. Smelting iron, carving granites was a skill brought down for generations in that era. Is it logical to say that the local population who lived in villages of 6- 10 families, by the river and their daily routine would be hunting, fishing and collecting fruits or farming became iron smelters. In short to build a civilization there should be a substantial amount of not less than 10,000 locals to build this civilization.

Even earlier than the Chola Empire, which invaded largely Indonesia and then Kedah and brought Buddhism and Hinduism with them. Though bijih besi can still be found in the surrounding area in Sungai Batu. You have to dig a few feet under the ground to find them. Anyway, you probably won't find it profitable to start an iron smelting industry there because there are plantations and houses in the area. The cost to drive away these existing plantations and houses has to be significantly lower than the profit from iron extraction to justify the industry. Not to mention, mineral extraction almost always brings along ecological destruction.

Year 788 BC? Wow, that's incredible! It was the late Bronze Age, the time of Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, and the Tigris River civilizations in Mesopotamia. During this prehistoric time, many regions were still surviving by hunting and gathering or were in the Megalithic period. Even the great Srivijaya Empire would only emerge 900 years later. Hinduism, which later formed the basis of many kingdoms in the Nusantara, only appeared around 100-200 BC and began spreading in the Nusantara around 400 AD.

🙏 Bujang = Bachelor in the Malaysian language ... The earliest residents that settled in the Peninsular of Malaya were of Hindu & Buddhist faiths , based on their chronologically dated Civilizations of Ancient India & the Middle Kingdom of China roughly about 5,500+ years ago ( although Buddhism founded by Sakyamuni Buddha some 2,560+ years ago in now Nepal / Northern India , before being introduced into Ancient China ) , about 1,122 years before Islam were founded about 1444H years ago ( counted from year 2023 ) ... 🕯🌎
The earliest belief is Animism. Hindu and Buddha came later.
Edit: Some opinions even said that the Malays before Hinduism and Buddhism have practised some sort of folk religion that did not involve any man made deity. Either way, there's a belief practised before both Hinduism and Buddhism
Our ancestors here were practicing paganism/anamisme before hindusm n buddhism came.
Some say hinduism origin from south east asia..u can see the idol cloth..it not from cold climate of himalaya 🤭
old malaysian religion was animism before islam came, not hindus or buddhism.
As mentioned in the video, the word Bujang here came from the Sanskrit word "Bhujanga". It's not what we understand as bachelor in modern Malay language.
Makes sense if it's older than Indonesia's hindu temples because Hinduism arrived in Malaya first before it reached Java and Bali.

Malaysia's Bujang Valley: Southeast Asia's oldest civilisation
java gunung padang has been dated to over 20,000 years old
Gunung Padang is not a civilization, it's pseudoscience.
Natawidjaja's analysis was questioned by other scientists. Vulcanologist Sutikno Bronto suggested that the carbon dating result was influenced by weathering and concluded that the elevation is the neck of an ancient volcano and not a man-made pyramid. Thirty-four Indonesian scientists signed a petition questioning the motives and methods of the Hilman-Arif team. Archaeologist Víctor Pérez described Natawidjaja's conclusions as pseudoarchaeology.
Most recent studies Gunung Padang is 2.100-2.200 years old not 22.000 years old
Apa pengaruh gunung padang dgn tamadun lain di dunia ?
gunung padang sensational report has been dismissed by archaeologists around the world, They point out that Natawidjaja and his team provide no evidence that the buried material was made by humans. They say that it might be more than 20,000 years old but was probably of natural origin as there is no evidence of any human presence such as a bone fragment or artefact in the soil. If you went to the Palace of Westminster and dropped a core seven metres into the ground and pulled up a soil sample you might date it as being 40,000 years old, But that does not mean the Palace of Westminster was built 40,000 years ago by ancient humans. It just means there’s carbon down there that’s 40,000 years old. so that's why gunung padang were not in.

I don't know how you define "oldest civilization in Southeast Asia".
This 2800 years old structures is old, but absolutely not the oldest man-made structures ever found in Southeast Asia. Take example of Gunung Padang pyramid, the first layer (the most recent) dates back to around 2,500 BCE (4,500 years old), while the most ancient structure from deeper layer dates further back to 20,000 BCE (22,000 years ago).

Do you think Indonesian historians were that unreliable? LOL ... Nothing has been dismissed. You can not dismiss a theory with another theory, unless you have new more reliable evidence to counter the earlier evidence.
That 788 BC estimated earlier was deemed an outlier.

first of all the local population couldn't have created this civilization. Basic DNA test of most Malays clearly stated that 40 - 60%- Thai/ Cambodian origin ( recent)
20 - 40% - Filipino/ Proto Malay (
