      I haven't lived there in a decade, although I work there. I park in Arbor Hill each day. I don't feel unsafe there. I know there's some gun play at times during the summer, but Albany is a much nicer city than most in Upstate. I worked on a jobsite several years ago on Sheridan. Everyone was worried his car would get broken into. Never happened. Tge only robbery was the city of Albany putting tickets on cars. I lived in Utica briefly years ago. What a hole. Summer in Albany is nice too.

    I lived here for 4 years, I'm from Jersey City so I'm used to living in a city. I'm a white guy 53 now, I lived here in my early 40's. I worked on mostly Clinton Ave. Rebuilding abandoned houses gunshots every day, cops doing 100 mph or so responding. One day I just got a pack of cigarettes and was walking packing them, well a couple guys tried to take them! Well to their surprise I whooped both in front of their boys, thought I was an easy mark. I fought for 14 years!! But yeah ALL cities have HOODS!! Small % cause the problems. There's A LOT of people there that don't act like animals, shooting each other for a LOOK OR COLOR SHIRT!!! Some people are scared to come out of the house!! That's not fair to them. South Pearl is a mad house to, the Governor is right there two or three blocks up.There are beautiful parks there to. Albany is diverse, All kinds of people. I loved living there.

    First of all, this is just Arbor Hill, which is one of the more socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods in Albany. The south end can be pretty rough around the edges as well, but the trick in Albany as with many places is to have some respect for people when you are in the area where they live/work. For instance, not driving around recording them on a "hood safari". As a plumber, I've worked quite a bit in Arbor Hill, and even though I'm literally the whole jar of mayonnaise, I've never had anything but positive encounters with the people that live there. It's as simple as being polite and showing people some common courtesy. It's also disappointing to me that this is the only impression you give of Albany, as there are so many neighborhoods to see, all with some really great people in them!

    • @finnbazz6315
      @finnbazz6315 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did an internship there earlier this year and since I’m from a different country I noticed there were a lot of reasons as to why this is from a foreign perspective.
      Albany is too reliant on cars still, many people live outside the city, within suburbs and go shopping in the absurd about of strip malls littered around the outskirts (largest Walmart in the country and Crossgates being examples).
      For this reason Downtown suffers, it’s dead, which leaves little incentive to go there, so people continue to abandon the inner city in favour of the suburbs.
      However, I did see and hear that a lot of revitalisation was occurring. New property sales, new businesses, pedestrian planning, etc.
      Give it 10 years and I can see Albany becoming a whole new city if all goes well, a city that might be worth talking about outside of political talk.

    Arbor Hill has a really interesting history - it was originally designed as a neighborhood of mansions for the wealthy. White flight, red-lining, and other discriminatory lending practices led to what you see today. A little justice would go a long way to restoring this neighborhood.

      My mom has lived there since 2006 with a woman who is supposed to be her girlfriend. My mom lets this woman control her and refuses to leave or see her family in Maryland including me because the woman doesn't want her to. My mom skipped both of her parent's funerals and my college graduation because the woman would "not allow" her to return to Albany if she left to visit family. The woman is insane and yells at people and hits them, but for some reason my mom is choosing to stay there, as is my sister who is basically supporting them both since they are both in poor health and both unemployed.
      I worry about my mom all the time and even though the woman is nice a lot of the time, she becomes unhinged over the smallest things and will go off on a tangent for hours and attack anyone who dares to argue with her. I just wish I could see my mom more because I really miss her and she never calls me even though she does want to talk to me. I always have to call her, which irritates me because I feel like I have to play by her rules.

      Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and even Niagara Falls are the hoods of UpState NY. The rest like any other state is just Forest farms and little country twins.

    Albany is the ghetto of the government the only thing they care about is the state capitol . Neighborhoods go from good to bad in a matter of blocks . However it is chill and there are lots of trees and beautiful places so not sooo bad . I have been here 25 years so there must be something good .

      MO_VR Schenectady is a part of Albany County not the city of Albany. So once again ALL of Albany does not look like this.

    South Pearl Street. Someone just spoke that name here on the messages.I was on South Pearl Street with my boyfriend on Christmas Eve 2015. It's still had cobblestone streets and very old buildings. It was very one that Christmas Eve and Christmas day about 66 degrees. There was something magical about South Pearl Street with a cobblestones glimmering in the night.later on my boyfriend's brother told us that South Pearl Street wasn't the best place to be but we had stopped at a gas station to ask directions we are in the wrong place. But nothing happened it was Christmas Eve and the weather was beautiful.
