the amethyst stuff is tricky because the other gems are like it's fine we do accept you, but the problems clearly run deeper so it's only like putting a bandaid over it, and then they arise again. i feel like they do truly accept her and appreciate her being there but they have these unconscious thoughts nonetheless and it shows in how they treat her and talk to her. it's something the three of them still need to work through, but we can see that they are making progress.

She technically a beta cuck. Pearl clearly looks down on her, and garnet is just harshly honest so she says it how it is. You fuck up she lets you know, and we see that even with pearl later on with the fusion thingy i wont spoil. It just so happens that amethyst fucks up alot more than pearl does.
This is some pretty obscure lore but Kansas in the SU universe is basically their version of Hollywood. SU has an alternate history and as part of that, Kansas actually developed into the movie mecca of their world. This is based on a timeline where Laugh-O-Gram Studios (a real world early Disney studio) stayed in Kansas and caused the movie industry to centralize there. Yeah.
I’ve always wondered why they made that decision, if it was just a one-off joke or something like this. Thanks for the lore!
It's not one of those lore points that really ties into something greater but it just goes to show that the writers really think every little detail through. Nothing is just totally random.

I might be misremembering but, according to the creator, the reason Jaime wanted to move to Kansas is because, in the world of the show, a major film studio/distributor that operated there in its early days IRL (I think it was Disney but, don't quote me) never moved to California. So, Kansas essentially became this universe's Hollywood.

A lot of Amethyst’s character is like that of a depressed teenager. In this episode alone, she looks for validation with each new reformation, instead of thinking for herself. We see that her room in the temple is also a ways messier than either Garnet’s or Pearl’s rooms. An environment like that, where you are being heavily criticized by the people you look up to-be they friends or family-and you’re just left to fester with your thoughts is the perfect recipe for self-loathing, and self-sabotage. And of course, when one’s mental health is poor enough, they might not care much about their appearance; the tidiness of their clothes, whether their hair is messy. Amethyst fixing the elasticity of her tank top’s strap by the end of the episode is evidence enough that she’s trying to take the first steps to think for herself too.

Just in case no one pointed this out on patreon, but Jamie first appeared all the way back in one of the first episodes of season 1, "Cheeseburger Backpack"
Amethyst's major flaw has always been her insecurity. Despite she acts like she doesn't care how others think of her, the truth is she really cares how she is perceived. You got to see that when it was revealed she was made on Earth and how she feels like Pearl and Garnet think of her as a reminder of the terrible things the Homeworld gems did on Earth. Another example is her relationship with Greg, as the two of them used to be close friends and would hang out a lot, only for Greg to start spending less time with her to be with Rose. And then we have how she wants to prove herself to Garnet, as she tried to act like Pearl to gain more respect from her.
The irony of the situation is that Amethyst is the one who doesn't quite accept herself and as a result her idea of how people perceive her is colored by that insecurity.
The end of the episode pretty much confirms this with their interaction with Garnet

19:16 another trick with musical composition and characterization! When Amethyst reformed to resemble Pearl, the background music’s piano is a little out of tune. Each of the gems have a designated instruments. Garnet has a synth bass (Ruby) and pads (Sapphire), Pearl has a piano, Amethyst has drums backed by a quieter bass, and Steven usually has chip-tune leads. And so it’s really clever for when Amethyst came back looking like Pearl, that she also has an instrument otherwise unique to Pearl playing in the background. However, it’s not a piano that’s in the best condition, but a ways out of tune, like an acoustic one you’d find in an open-air auditorium or classroom.

Remember in Rose's Scabbard at the Strawberry Battlefield Amethyst says enthusiastically that she wished she was at that ancient fight, and Garnet immediately admonished her "No you don't! Countless Gems were broken. It was a maelstrom of destruction and death!" At least at this point, the show seems to imply that Amethyst wasn't in the Crystal Gem Rebellion. Pearl and Garnet obviously were, and that might also feed into Amethyst's anxiety, if she wasn't a veteran of the war and therefore an equal with P & G.

Amethyst is highly insecure about herself, which is brought upon by her origins. Garnet isnt trying to "change" Amethyst. She isnt trying to make her less impulsive. Like what yall guys said, thats just how she is. What Garnet wants is for Amethyst to take care of herself. Give herself some time to heal and come back stronger.
Garnet and Pearl have always accepted who Amethyst is, even if it doesnt look like it (you can watch the kindergarten episode for reference). Truthfully, its Amethyst who is the one who doesnt accept herself. Notice how she puts words into Garnet's mouth and twists her advice. She always thinks others think badly of her, even with people who she knows care about her.
Impulsivity doesnt excuse you from your duty to work on your well-being. When you hurt others who are trying to help you, thats on you, not on them, regardless of if you were in a bad place or not.

I think the creator stated Beach City is based loosely on Rehoboth, Beach; Dewey, Beach; Bethany Beach area in Delaware. Where she vacationed as a kid.

Amethysts are used as healing stones IRL, as they are associated with healing and the Heart Chakra, which explains amethyst having quick regeneration and why her gem is on her chest.
I think we already have the answer as to why Amethyst was acting the way she did this ep, and it wasn't because of other's opinion of her, it was because of her own insecurities. Amethyst was born here on Earth and was a biproduct of Earth's colonisation by gems. And since the Crystal Gems fight against Earth colonisers, Amethyst, as we found out in s1, feels like her origin place makes her a worse person. That leads her to thinking badly abt herself, so she's being impulsive because her denying her own feelings clouds her judgement. And that leads to Pearl, who is insecure herself, to bug Amethyst abt it. Which leads to Amethyst feeling even worse abt herself and the circle closes. Insecurity and learning to deal with it is actually 1 of the main themes of Steven Universe, and I love how it gets explored in this episode! Also, H-man has never been more wrong in his entire life.
Also when a gem reforms, they go through all their previous forms before they settle on the new one

Pearls relationship with Rose was based around idolization complexes and Amethyst has a tendency to parasocialize and often values herself based on the opinions of others whilst resenting them for that insecurity.

I think that their approach to having prevent Amethyst sabotaging herself through her impulsiveness is that of course you can't force her to be the certain way you want her to be but at the same time to not just let her do what she wants as that makes her feed into that insecurity
So they just kind of had to keep denying her until she finally got on the right track on self improvement
"Why do they think goatees are evil?" We actually had like an hour during a lesson dedicated to talking about the psychology of how people view different kind of facial hair. There was a beard/mustache chart ranging from very trust worthy to disastrous xD
Goatee was listed as unsavory and the mustache curling up as questionable.
amethyst was supouse to exist before the war but she was born late (idk how to say it, english is my second language) so she actually come out of the hole of the kindergarden after the war, thats why she feel appart of the other cristal gems becaouse she is from earth, she wasnt in the war and she is a late amethyst so they treat her like a kid and that make her feel more distance
26:36 ya, Amethyst was born on earth. And we've seen the battleground they fought on, which was earth. So there's no reason to believe she's been to homeworld. Also I'm pretty sure they said that they found Amethyst after the war (remember she was cooked too long, which is why her hole in the kindergarten was small or whatever)
To answer your question. The same gems make the same fusion even if they are already fused.
For example if Garnet + Amethyst fuse then fuse with Pearl they’ll still make Alexandrite.
At the same time too many gems can’t fuse together or they’ll end up unstable and will have trouble speaking

this may be a spoiler, but I can't not comment on it, because I see a lot of it in the community itself and it makes me a little upset, Rose and Pearl clearly had a romantic involvement, I think it was never spoken with all the lyrics in the series, but the creator has already confirmed it and watching the series makes this very clear, especially in the next episodes, and when someone denies it it hurts a little like a girl who likes girls, because several times my loves were summed up to "they are just very friendly" or "they are so close, like sisters". This isn't an attack or blame, I just wanted to vent this and I don't think this was meant to be mean, don't get me wrong, I love following these reactions, I even have an alert every Friday for the next part to come out, Steven Universe is one of my favorite cartoons and it helped me a lot to get through some really tough stuff in my life, so watching you guys have so much fun fills me with joy.
The fact that hman even called them crazy for thinking they were a couple.. is insane! He acted like they were dumb for it. I can’t wait for his words to go against himself.

I know this video is a couple months old now but I've actually been to the closest real world equivalent to Beach City! There's a city right on Rehoboth Bay (where Beach City is) that my family used to go to every summer when I was little. There's no magic temple there, unfortunately...

One thing i liked to look back at, is that whenever there was an episode the main gems got poofed, that it was the writer’s excuse to change their designs, kinda like how Ben 10 Omniverse had the trial episode where they went Meta on us and mentioned the redesign from OG ben 10, Alien force, and Omniverse. Or in Gumball when they would blend the voice cast change in with the episode itself
Delmarva is a peninsula on the Atlantic. I think Beach City is supposed to be around Rehoboth Beach, which is a decently popular vacation destination, especially for folks around New York.

Steven Universe has an entirely different world history. It implies that Columbus didn't find the Americas but they were found and settled later. Canada is colder and even less hospitable and is called the great north because the cold areas of Russia don't even exist. A lot of the world is entirely different and it seems to be because of the gems. They have the strawberry fields where a battle happened because of gems and it somehow grew giant strawberries. It could have even been Stevens mom who did that. Anyway, a lot of little details tell us a very different picture of their universe than ours. So Kansas is the picture show capital of the world.
I love how you guys can agree and disagree with ideas when watching the episodes! It's just like it should be, some notice some things, others don't, and y'all share your different points of view politely.
Amethyst is indeed immature and needs to grow up but also the others should learn how to accept her or help her in a better way other than comparing her to someone else.

Just to put this on record, Beach City was inspired by Ocean City in Maryland. Rebecca sugar the creator of the show grew up in my state and went to my high school. A lot of the scenery looks like the beach in MD. Except the cliff and where Steven lives.

Amethyst needs to improve, yes. But its really awesome to see yall immediately recognize that part of that has to come from her support structure/family/whatever you wanna call the others. Even if they dont mean to be unsupportive, they still have to recognize that its happening. (And the episode really does seem to address that well).

The show's creator Rebecca Sugar grew up around the beach towns of DelMarVa. And as a Delaware resident, I can say that the beaches are the state's biggest tourist attraction (primarily because there isn't anything else!). Hollywood is in Kansas in this universe. And it should be obvious by now -- H-MAN -- that Pearl was totally in love with Rose! (Also I still don't know H-Man's real name because it was inaudible.)

It's very common to understand something diferent to what the person speaking to you means when you are stress abaut your insecuritys, and even if you know that's not what they mean, it still feels like they do. For example, when my mother says "to think that at your age i was already pregnant whit you" I'm sure she dosn't mean to say "look how much of a failure you are, already 20 and you don't even have a job or social life" but it is how my brain interpretates it

Crystal Gems are 8,000 to 10000 + years old while amethyst is between a couple hundred to a little over 1000 years old

The main reason Amethyst hates being compared to Pearl is because she feels like it should be a fair comparison. It's easy for both of them to deal with Garnet being wiser and stronger because Garnet's a fusion. Pearl and Amethyst are competitive and critical of each other because they're the only other being they know who they feel like they can be competitive with. If you notice a lot of Pearl's criticism of Amethyst is unnecessary and seems to stem from her own insecurities.
