I work at a high school theater and I have to fit lots of different sized girls. We only have one dress form but we have loads of shoulder pads. This is an excellent solution! Since it's something that I have to do often, I'll probably add some Velcro to the backs of the pads so I can take them on and off of the form easily.
Thread magazine has a article about making a dress form to fit multi people. It's basically a dress form skin tight dress with zip down back, that is padded out with batting for quilting, and then a second dress that fits that size sewn over it connected at the neckline and down both sides of the back to the zip edges. You make them for all the sizes you need and just zip the one you need over the form as needed. For theater this is much more practical.
Ive had my own sewing and design shop from home for 4 years. I have learned so much from you and you have helped me fine tune my skills!! Thank you for your videos!!!
Nick, I loved the way that you addressed the sizing issue, a sensitive matter for most women. I especially liked how you brought up your mom’s size, ‘she is not a size four’, very tactfully, and of course, lovingly, you are a class act. Thanks for the video.
Thank you, this is the first channel that actually shows HOW to pad the dress form/mannequin. They say just stuff it with poly fill which does not work.
I would probably do a combo of the pads..and batting. All those areas between the pads needs to be filled in. Plus--he mentions nothing about how to cover the form for easier draping once you've sized it. Using a leotard is always great. You just have to cut open the crotch if it's not a snap closure.
You are an absolute legend. I've watched a few videos on fitting a dress form, and yours is by far the most concise I've found. I'm gonna be deep diving the rest of your content for sure
Nick - you are hilarious !! I've just found your channel and as someone who apparently hasn't got "average proportions" clothes wise I've had to tailor almost EVERYTHING I own FOR EVER - mainly through trail and error - your tutorials are a godsend, thank you so much.
I*CONIC (In my JoanTheScammer Voice) Lol I LOVE THESE VIDEOS. I COULD REMEMBER WATCHING YOU ON PROJECT RUNWAY AS A TEEN. YOU INSPIRED ME TO GO TO DESIGN SCHOOL AND YOU INSPIRED ME TO TEACH ONE DAY. THANK YOU NICK. YOU ARE THE BEST.
I just won one of these dress forms in half size. I'm so excited! I can drape and fit AND save materials on mock up! It's going to also force me to do patterns electronically. Which is good!
I just bought a dress form and needed to add 3/4th of an inch to the chest and 1.5 inch to the waist. I found it really difficult to drape smoothly once the padding was added, although it's easy and enjoyable for me to drape on the form without the padding. It's really stressing me out, and making me regret not buying a size up. This was such a big investment for me. Do you have any tips on how to work with a padded dress form? Edit : let me be honest. I read some comment here about how the space between pads needed to be filled and ended up looking at other TH-cam videos, I shouldn't have. Just add the pads, do nothing else, and it works absolutely fine. Anything more complicated actually seems harder to work with. I now only use pads with a silky smooth service and it works fabulously
Would you consider it's best to have different mannequin sizes? Or just get a small size and then pad? I bought a size 36 and I'm kinda regretting it... I could have just bought a smaller one and then pad it... 😓
Sticky iron on interlining and steam over the top to compress it, or a stretch cover. Ive seen the interlining look better. Taylor the interlining like the original cover though for a better result. There's a vid. Best buying the right size first.
I love you Nick. You are so fun, creative, inspiring, and motivating. Thanks for all your tips and videos. Please do more videos. I've watched them all so far 😘
I have one of those expandible dress forms that I bought about 12 years ago. Body sizes definitely are never alike, and the form only adjusts so much. I just kept adding folded fabric to the sections that I needed to adjust. Sometime hard to apply pins. This looks to be way easier thank you.
So, what would you do if you have really weird measurements? I'm short and heavy with a belly, a lower bust line and very sloped shoulders, but a short back-waist length. Do you just keep adding and keep adding? I haven't invested in a dress form because none of them even come close to my weird measurements. My RTW size is usually about a 24 or a 3x. I'd love to make some fun things for myself, but don't really want to try and make a duct tape form.
Hi Nick. I just presented this question to another video side about adjusting my just want to alarm just size. Then I scroll down to your video in just turned it on and you are talking about what I just asked the question about. Thank you so much I see it with my own eyes and that help so much I'm going to
Thanks Nick. You are amazing and so sweet. I love to watch you make things. I still need to learn how to put one simple little dart in a free hand tunic though. Are you interested in doing a video on it. I would be grateful. 😘
Hi, thank u so much! I have already apllied what u taught and it made our job so easy.....our customers love d fit. I also added old long socks to pad d hips sometimes.
Hello Nick, I'm loving your videos, very well explained! I'm looking to buy a dress form, do you recomend the adjustable ones (that can grow size by size) or is it better to use one fixed size dress form, I'll apreciate any advise. Thank you!
you got my vote on the love scale . I would have to add a lot more to that dress form -I been buying my pants aka : blue jeans in the men's department for many years now as I can never find a pair of pants / blue jeans in my size in the women's section of Any store . I am a mother, grand mother and a great grand mother . now I am happy to finally be able to make a dress or pants /waist in my size even if I do have to sew them my self. great video -oh by the way now I know what I was saving all those shoulder pads for lol . you just got a new subscriber out of just this one video. :)
I think, first of all you should draw front, back, and from side how that body looks like, and also most important which angel have your shoulders , i mean posture . Only after that ,you can add pod.
I actually have the opposite problem. I'm a size 4 (European 34), but even most of the size 4 dress forms have a much wider hip than I have, and I could never use them to drape and work on, for example, tight fitting skirts or dresses. Another problem I have, is, I also love to sew historical garments under which I'd wear a corset. If I wanted to make something like that, the waist of a dress form, even if it HAD all my usual measurements right, would now be way too large for how I'd need to drape and fit something over a corset.
Hi Nick, thanks for putting out helpful videos. I was just wondering where do you get your pads? Is it easy to create your own pads as opposed to buying them? Any advice or tips would be much appreciated!
Hi Nick, thank you so much for all you are doing - I love your video's and have learnt so much. I love designing evening gowns and want to start draping. I want to purchase some cheap fabrics to drape with but that match the quality of the silks for the final gowns - would you recommend just getting various weights in cotton or buying polly satins, chiffons etc? Thanks again!
Hi Nick! It's really amazing the way u teach. Love your tutorials, you make it so interesting. Could you also teach to drape a skirt for a ball gown? Thanks.
This was awesome. I saw a beautiful dress form that I really want but the size is a little small for me. This is a wonderful idea, but lazy me would probably cut up a comforter or fuzzy blanket to make her a tank "shirt" to fill in the areas 😂. BTW... just realized I remember watching you on Project Runway!🍃🌷💯.
Hi MsHarleyD: To answer your question--Yes, you could buy a form and make it your size. there are several options: You can order a dress form from a dress form company and have it be made Custom to your size, which is very expensive,. Or, you can buy one of those "adjustable forms" that expand and make fit to your size. Or just buy a form close to your size and add shoulder pads to customize it to your size. Good luck with whatever method you chose! XO, Nick
Thanks for responding Nick. I loved your season of PR. You were my favorite. Being a Barbie fan I bought the doll you designed. :) Thanks for these awesome videos. I'm inspired to make my own clothes again. Best wishes. Luvz n hugz
thank you nick, i was thinking of buying those dressform that are adjustable online but i was having second thoughts. you just convince me not to buy one I'll just save my money.
This is fabulous...everyone talks about bust waist hips...but what about shoulder height? How do we find standard size measurements for that...for instance when we make things with shoulders? I can't find anything anywhere...please help!,
I am extremely petite and having trouble finding a dress form. I have a size 0 but it's still too large across the shoulders in the back. I can't get a child's form because they're too narrow and short waisted to use and I'm not sure what to do anymore. Do you know of anyone that makes a juniors/00 size form? I'm desperate!
Bootstraps DIY dressform will produce a pattern for your size (enter your measurements) and you can sew it yourself! I have a small dressform and I'm sewing my pattern right now for her! Instead of stuffing her w only poly fill (as recommended) I'm padding the small dressform I already have and slipping the DIY one over it, so I got the best of both worlds and don't end up with two dress forms when I only need one. It also has the added bonus of using the original Hardware (stand, feet, neck) all of which are nice wood! I mentioned all of that, so if you come across a child's dress form - not only can you pad it up to fit but you can make your own DIY bootstrap cover for it! Hope that helped! Cheers
Hi Nicks. Thanks for the video. I am a fashion school student. Can you please shed more light on the distance between the waist and the hip. You said 9 but I always use 7

What is a leotard??
@@Pancracias1 Its basically a 1 piece swimsuit that ballet dancers wear.
GREAT Idea, about the leotard, Thanks!🙂

Wow thanks so much this is the easiest way of padding I've seen by far. Glad I watched this one, great channel.
Now I can use all those pads I had left over from the 80’s.

You can create a lining for the manequin made of stretchy jersey and you put it on the padded manequin!

I don't recommend the adjustable dressform, because you need the center-front/back to drape your designs.
I have an adjustable one and have had that same realisation.
The adjustable ones suck & are barely pinnable
