The NHL is terrible at this stuff. I know there have been a bunch of retirement ceremonies this season but it’s still a relatively rare occurrence. NHL Network barely mentioned Pekka Rinne or Sergei Zubov a couple weeks ago either. They just played a quick highlight of the ceremonies 3 hours later. They couldn’t interrupt some mediocre panel rambling about some mediocre regular season games??
It was cool that it was on a day where Granlund could be there. I'm guessing that wasn't an accident. Koivu will forever be the player that comes to mind when I think of the early 21st century Wild.

-Koivu was a very good leader and defensive minded forward giving his best every night. Another thing he was good at was his classic shootout goals. -Unfortunatelly the team wasn't very well managed during his session and they never had a good team enough to challenge for long playoff run. -He could be compared to francise players Mats Sundin and Shane Doan who also was captains for a long time with no playoff success.

I thought this was a story from The Onion. Mikko Koivu? Cmon.. 206 career goals, never more than 22 in a season, 1 70 point season and 28 points in 59 playoff games. If that's what earns a number retirement in this league there won't be many left to wear.
He was a very good defensive forward and leader. A guy doing his best every night. Points are not the most important thing. The management of the team was never good during his period, therefore never good enough for a cup win or deep playoff run.
You’re not wrong but since you’re a leaf fan, everyone will just overlook the good point you made. The wild missed the playoffs a lot with koivu, it’s a fact, at least you’re not ignoring it.
