Loved the wick proper track proper punters and the Jenkins brothers used to bet as power they weren’t bookmakers they were rock stars absolutely loved them was like betting with a celebrity one of them opened a restaurant in Wanstead the Wellington proper geezers joint miss them days
The viking used to bet at Harringay as well never refused me a bet salt of the earth.
Brilliant times ... loved this track !
The Wick , what a track . Fond memories ......... Clement Freud was often there Saturday morning , lots of other characters. I will always remember the announcements over the tanoy system , " would the owner of Car reg XNM 162S please return to their Car , they have left the Engine running " such was the desperation to get in for the 1st race which was often an M8 or M9 affair where there would be a 25-1 shot amongst the field . Loved it Fondest memory backing a dog at 33-1 in a graded race , photo finish , 5-1 against in the photo , my mate said whack in on the 1-2 on jolly in the photo , you cant loose , I bet the same dog in the photo it won . Great bookies all of them
Clement loved dog racing i spoke to him of all places at a flapping track in a small town called March in Cambridgeshire many years ago
Really fond memories of the track. Remember the various Tracton dogs, nearly all top class, and an A1 dog called Homer's Tale. Also remember a low grade dog called Catch Lucky that used to run over the 523m trip. Always missed the break but always finished well at a decent price. Still to this day remember backing him at 10/1 winning an M6. Strange how these things stick in your head.
Homers Tale...big black & white dog if i recall. Pacey, strong finisher.
Remember Tracton Charm well David. He was always winning with that early pace.
Another great dog ran at the wick called Hello Blackie i used to buy dogs at the sales they held there
My brother bought had dog in the sales at hackney in late 77.He paid £600 for a dog called ridgemount swank .He was a beautiful red fawn dog ,never seen a dog walk like him ,it was if each leg was on springs fantastic action .Brother had him trained at white city manchester he ran around 6 times and went lame .Two weeks off and won his trial back .On 28th feb 1978 we couldnt see him getting beat .Expecting little over evens he opened ay 9/4 before drifting to 3/1,we got £500 on at 3/1.Flew out and led all the way unchallenged. We spit the bet with 3 bookies who told us not to bet with them again ,such sporting chaps.....WHAT a night .
His name was Danish king at white city .
Not just a great greyhound stadium but also great speedway stadium
Sadly missed. Only BAGS kept it going and like so many stadiums, left to run down. Broken plate glass windows, lino on the floors....The disused 'Popular' side, a reminder of better times..The art deco grand stand...Ah, that's nostalaga for you! And life goes on..
Hi i have fond memories in the 80s saturday
morning there was a religion in my local bookies
bet the favourite in the 11.00 clock first race.
amount of times it won was great. my personal
favourite was a dog called keys bags of early
sometimes held on sometimes nabbed on the
line .much love
What Good Times we Had in the 70's & 80's
Never went to the Wick and always regretted it, as a Brightonian Hove was my track, I did visit all the London tracks, but never got to Hackney, I walked along Waterden Road recently but couldn’t work out where the dog track was situated. I did bet with the Jenkins brothers at Wembley and collected from them just after Neil Foulds the snooker player did, would have been 1987...happy days.
yep Hove dogs was my track and still is my favourite greyhound stadium,
Fine distiction, hot work, super sword, dodadae, traction charm, and many more carried my money..saturday mornings mug of tea and a ham roll..they were the days..
The Jenkins brothers, legendary bookmakers, put today's on coarse bookmakers to shame.
Nice people hope they are doing well.
When london was good
you would not get 100 on anywhere now
@@neilirons8866 can't say that statement is true because in a sense we now have things like Betfair etc
Neil Irons what a load of shite your post is I'd lay a grand never mind a cenny ffs
This track should never have close outrageous people responsible should be ashamed of themselves 👿👿
crazy how they keep getting rid of all these tracks and Hackney was a great track and I always would look forward to Hackney and Crayford on a saturday morning and as fucking usual they built poxy properties on this Hackney track, PATHETIC!!!
Totally agree mate well said
I was there recently, it’s part of the 2012 Olympic Development, the Copper Box Arena is across the road ( the Arena used for Boxing) it’s ridiculous that London has no dog track now….
The rich property developers purchased them with the sole aim of closing them down and building on them
always remember a dog called sam the creed at hackney won me a lot of money one day
Hello blackie the best dog to ever grace the wicks sand
Wat happen to the new grandstand
2-1 rfc doubles i loved
