    I just wanted to thank the scriptwriter that put in the effort to write "none of the sample sizes were huge." I know it's a small detail, but acknowledging that certain statistics may not be as reliable as others for reaching wider conclusions shows a lot of integrity and dedication to detail on your part. I don't know if you'll see this, but thanks nonetheless.

      @Not Robot Agree with both these comments completely. If people understood the scientific method, we would have far, far fewer antivax, anti-science fools running around doubting what public health experts say just because they may change a recommendation or suggested behavior.

    I have complex PTSD and I have been a gardener for most of my life . When I am taking care of plants I seem to loose time . I tend to think mostly about them so the things that cause me stress are diminished . I know what each plant needs by interacting with it . The results are tangible . I have control over what's happening , they don't judge me and they reward me with beauty and vibrancy . When I am triggered by something , paying attention to my plants definitely helps me get through the tough bits

      I'd never heard of the condition until your comment so I read up on it. Initally I just assumed it was PTSD with some extra symptoms but it sounds like it's quite different, especially from how they both develop. Obviously I can't really know what you went and go through from a quick search about it but sounds honestly heart-breaking so I'm happy you find something that helps you cope. I just wanted to wish you and your plants all the best, especially through these trying times.

      Plants do help.. especially if you are struggling with depression, anxiety overall a bad time. I have a small rooftop garden that's my little heaven.

      ​@@LancesArmorStriking A big difference, speaking of houses, is that we live much more indoors, and that we migrated from sunny parts of the planet to less sunny parts. The most common lack of vitamine is vit D. In my country 60% of population has to little vit D. And people with a dark skin need more sun to get the same amount, so have to be extra careful. The positive side is that vit D supplements are usually cheap. If you are vit D deficient, you feel tired and your immune system doesn't work well. It would have been a good idea if the WHO had said this during the peak of covid19. Btw, if you're deficient, it takes some time to build it up again.

      @@LancesArmorStriking wouldn’t it be easier to eat a balanced diet after the agricultural revolution? Prior to it you would need to grow or find the various crops and animals, and you were limited to the ones that grow in your local area.
      Now, you can buy food that grows from the other side of the world and it’s cheap and fresh and always available. You can easily eat a plate of food that comes from five continents.

    Thank you for that confirmation. I'm a non-napper and I'm so tired of people always telling me I should. It does more harm than good to me and wrecks my normal biological clock. Napping has the effect on me like holding a piece of meat in front of a hungry dog, but keeping it just out of reach. Only hours of deep sleep will do when I feel the need to `nap`.

      Snake plants-sansaveria are practically fake they are so easy to take care of. Water it once every 2 weeks, can grow in low light to high light but no direct sunlight

    The left side / heartburn thing is for real. Started sleeping on my left side years ago and it has dramatically decreased my acid reflux.

    I'm 35 with ADHD and have suffered from delayed sleep phase syndrome my entire life (this is typical for ADHD apparently). I recall when I was first diagnosed being told that the best treatment is (I think) called photo therapy, which is essentially sitting under a very bright lamp every morning. The lamp was super expensive though and it really wasn't that big of a deal (I think the doctor said something to the effect of "teenage boys can sleep 15 hours and it isn't always a bad thing" - mind you I'm paraphrasing a short conversation from 20 years ago).
    As I've aged, it has become a bigger issue - particularly now with the quarantine. When I saw this video (ironically, I actually watched the source video about 1 week ago) I did not realize melatonin could be used to help treat delayed sleep phase syndrome. I knew it was used as a sleep aid, and I knew it was naturally released as a part of the circadian rhythm, but I guess I didn't connect the dots until seeing this. I determined that either A) The doctor didn't mention this for some reason (perhaps it wasn't known back then, or because I was a kid) or B) He said this and I managed to forget some 20 years later (seems reasonable)
    I'm very averse to unnatural cures because I do not like the idea of not solving the true root cause of issues. Regardless, your explanation paired with the scientific backing convinced me to give it a try. To my surprise, it seems to have helped me tremendously. I realize you rightfully disclaim regularly to not trust you "Internet people" and consult your doctor. I also am in _no way_ advocating for people to disregard that advice. What I do want to say though, is this is one of countless ways SciShow has enriched my life and the lives of many others. For this reason, I decided to join your channel to help support the great work you're doing and I encourage other people to do the same if they also have benefited from SciShow. Our money is one of our most powerful tools for influencing the world, we should be intentional about the influence we have.

      I'm the same. Delayed sleep/circadian rhythm disorder my entire life. Unfortunately, melatonin causes me unbearable agitation after a couple hours. I don't know if there's anything that can help me.

      Before sleep: Melatonin + Theanine. Melatonin triggers sleepiness in about 30 minutes but doesn't lower the brain's activity level. Theanine lowers the brain's activity level (raises GABA) but doesn't trigger sleep. In the morning, a partial dose of Adrafinil on weekdays (not weekends). Make sure to go out and be active after school/work since another component of setting your awake/sleep time is that your mind recognizes that it needs to be aware of what's going on.

    Yea the heartburn thing is definitely true, at least for me. When I sleep on my right side, I get a lot of acid reflux. When I sleep on my left side, it completely goes away.

    Some people might find it interesting to know that in my mother tongue in India, we have always believed in the sleeping on your left side thing. We also have a word for it called, "Vaamkukshi", vaam meaning left and kukshi meaning side of sleeping.

    I can't function a full day without a nap. My brain starts to feel fried and overworked and at that point I have to lie down. I don't always sleep, but I need that quiet time in a darkened room and have my eyes closed. It's like a reboot and I feel refreshed and energetic again.
    I wish I didn't have to nap. I do have a problem of sleeping at night. So I might go in to that category of being sleep-deprived.

    I wonder whether it's actually a mood-lifter to have plants indoors or whether we actually have a constant low level of stress from not having plant life around. After all, we've only been living in human-made structures and cities for a few thousand years (give or take depending on the culture).
    Maybe the plants are restoring us to some kind of base level contentment.

    A note on the vitamins & supplements subject: If you end up having to take a long or particularly strong prescription of antibiotics, or more than one round of them in a short amount of time, DEFINITELY ask your doctor if you should take a probiotic supplement during or directly after finishing your prescription! The reason being that antibiotics have the potential to kill or imbalance your “gut flora” aka your intestinal microbiome (basically the good bacteria & other tiny living things from your stomach down).
    Once upon a time, after two rounds of antibiotics for an unusually pesky oral abscess, this happened to me. What ensued was a potentially life-threatening infection from a nasty lil bacteria known as C-diff, or Clostridium difficile. And TRUST ME, you DON’T EVER want to catch this stuff. And believe it that prevention is certainly better than treatment and potential treatments needed for recurrence, because getting rid of the infection consists of MORE (though different) antibiotics WHILE dealing with the symptoms, and if those end up being ineffective for you- it might come down to having to get a fecal microbiota transplant. “What’s that?” you say? Well it’s otherwise known as a stool transplant, and “is the process of transferring fecal bacteria and other microbes from a healthy individual into another individual.” (Source for definition: Wikipedia). I don’t think most of ya would think of that as a good time. So yeah, PROBIOTICS lol. Ask your doc about needing ‘em if you end up needing to take lots of, particularly strong, or more than one scrip of antibiotics 😉

    Melatonin is also used in people with ASD with sleep issues.
    My 12 yr old son has Autism and his Dr told us to try melatonin with him when he was about 7 and was only sleeping a few hours a night. It worked to set his normal sleep pattern.

    Ok but honest question, who controls how their body moves at night? I can only fall asleep on my stomach, but I always wake up on one of my sides or occasionally, on the floor.

      I do. I have to wake up and change my position manually any time one position gets uncomfortable. It's quite annoying, esp since I have back pain, so I wake up all the time to change my position :(

      There are these weird pillows that sort of covers all sides of your body besides the bottom of your feet.
      They are pretty good at keep you in place at night.
      My mother used one when she had problems with a nerve in her shoulder that she had to wait out to know if they needed to operate (it worked itself out after a small eternity). Her shoulder would be very sensitive and she would wake up from the pain if she put any pressure on it. But she thought the weird body hugging pillow made a significant difference.
      I sleep on the side and I borrow that weird pillow from time to time. I sleep on my side, so I usually put one side of the pillow between my knees to help lessen the pressure the top leg has on the lower leg.

      If I sleep in my actual bed, I get such back pain the whole day I want to cry.
      So I switched to sleeping in my couch, which is harder. And bam, no problems at all.
      Sometimes, it is the bed that is the issue.
      Your weight + The soft or firmness of your bed = Backpain.
      - Also, sleeping in a small couch is an excellent way to train yourself to fall asleep on your back or side if you normally can't.

      It's actually important that we move throughout the night, otherwise we would get pressure ulcers. But I always wonder about this as well, like does it matter which side we fall asleep on when we're just going to move a million times anyway? I wonder if anybody has studied that

    With supplements and even medications, a better option than talking to your doctor (especially if you're taking medications,) is to talk to your pharmacist. I have actually been prescribed medications that DO NOT MIX. pharmacists tend to specialize in how medications work and interact where as doctors aren't quite as well trained in it.

      Especially after bits of pop-culture misinformation, like the simplification of "left brain, right brain" thinking.

    Just to make a hypothesis about the last one. It could be that plants were always a sign of water and/or food sources which would have been a major stressor before agriculture. And it makes sense that the prefrontal cortex would light up more with a live in person plant because there are more complex questions we would ask ourselves subconsciously about it compared to just the picture of one.

    Funny because if lie on my left side after eating, I get heart burn then start to vomit but right side is totally fine.
    Also about plants being de-stressing, I live in an English town that's made entirely of red bricks and black tarmac, when I get the chance to walk in the woods a feeling of calm comes over me, its easier on the eyes, feels cleaner, actually feels like there is life around me. towns and citys feel dead and bleak.

    I can vouch for sleeping on the left side. I get heartburn and acid reflux and any time I try to lie on my right side too early in the night I always get heartburn. Lying on my left side almost always minimizes the problem.

    A few points I've noticed that seem to come up in every video like this: 1) so much of maintaining your health comes down to the basics we all know we should do. 2) your body generally seems to have a pretty good idea what works for you (in lots of different ways), so listening to it is usually a good idea, even if it seems to go against accepted advice. 3) if you have any questions or concerns about your health, you should probably talk to your doctor before you do anything else. 4) being in/around nature is good for you, but no one really seems to know why

    I'm a daily napper right around boon for about 20 minutes to about 40 minutes just before I go to work. My husband is military trained to live off 4 hours of sleep and never takes a nap. I honestly can nap ANYWHERE and I don't sleep that long at night. :) this was a fun video!

    Concerning supplements: If you have had something like an intestinal bypass for weight control, as I have, you MUST check with your doctor about vitamin/mineral deficiencies. It turns out that different areas in your intestines absorb different things and anything that modifies these things can cause all sorts of BAD (really bad!) deficiencies -- I had almost zero Vitamin D absorption and somewhat poor Vitamin A and iron absorption after my bypass (many years ago before much of this was known). I had a toe suddenly break due to my Vitamin D problem (not very pleasant!) and that caused my doctor to do a major set of tests which showed my problems. This can KILL YOU if you are not aware of such changes!!!

    Im an RMT in Canada and I also have clients who sleep on their back with large pillows and it’s whats cause their front neck muscles to shorten and then that muscle tightness can cause tension headaches! Certain treatments and the clients that switch to a medium pillow have the quickest and drastic recoveries from chronic headaches. I love my job!

    Jessica Green has done some interesting studies on indoor air quality, including in hospitals. I don't think she studied potted plants but she did observe that indoor spaces with access to outdoor air have more microbes associated with plants and fewer pathogens.

    For as long as I can remember, whenever my mom's back would start hurting, she'd retreat to the floor. On her back with one pillow. The next morning she'd be back to normal. She's strange.

      Actually this has been quite helping me too... if i have a neck sprain thats not too serious i sleep on the floor without a pillow and the next morning im good as new

    Thank You SciShow. Legit have someone to talk to my doctor about. Perpetual Sleep Phase Syndrome. For years I have Cycled from day to night sleep schedule and I always sleep at least 8 hours (good luck trying to wake me up at 6hrs) I am more of a night owl as I prefer night time. But someone to call it gives me more ways to communicate with my Doctor.

    I think people love plants for the same reason they love pets or babies. They need care and attention to thrive and when the plant is healthy and beautiful, there’s a sense of pride. The helplessness of plants, along with their aesthetic, makes them adorable.

    Every time I nap, I wake up feeling like I just regained consciousness from a car wreck. I feel like that every time I wake up in the morning, too: more tired than I was before I went to sleep. But naps are definitely the worst.

      @@sabrinafelber by the way, I have narcolepsy. If you find yourself relating to my sleep crappiness, you might want to visit a neurologist and have a "sleep study". If you're taking 4 hour naps in the middle of the day, you stand a good chance of getting treatment. Plus, employers can't fire you for sleeping in or on the job anymore because you're in a protected class. Downside, you might lose your driver's license. But with meds and, for me, lifestyle adjustments, I can tell you it's like a whole different world that you never thought possible if you have untreated narcolepsy.

    For the part about St. John's Wort, I tried it while I was still on an anti-depressant and it sent me into a very powerful depression, so as they say in the video, consult your doctor first

      My doctor put me on St. John’s Wort before trying more mainstream antidepressants. It worked to some degree, but it wasn’t enough. It’s good to know about, however.

    I myself am a Survivor of a Brain tumor & a side effect of my treatment & cure is EXTREME Exhaustion, so I have been napping since I was cured back when I was 17. I AGREE that Not everyone needs one but I Certainly DO & It really helps to re-energize both my body & mind, I also QUIT sleeping on my sides, Now I am sleeping on my back with a pillow that keeps my head slightly elevated. I can say that I MOST DEFINITELY am sleeping better!

    I feel like you should have brought up a little more of the dangers involved with taking a folic acid supplement and the difference between folic acid and folate, the natural occurring form of vitamin vitamin B9. Your body takes much longer to convert folic acid into active B9 which can lead to having unmetabolized folic acid in your bloodstream, especially since it is also often added to fortified foods so you may be getting more than you think. This can have negative health effects such as increased cancer risk and making vitamin B12 deficiency harder to detect, although more studies are needed to be definitive. I just thought I should bring that up as I believe it’s worth mentioning.

    I am not a regular napper, in fact most of the time I don’t like wasting time on it, but I have found that a 10 or 15 minute power nap can ZAP a sudden wave of sleepiness. I have severe sleep apnea, but even without using the CPAP machine it can zap that sleepiness. Even if I nap on my stomach.

    Response to sleep positions. Gotten my best sleep when I've not stayed in any particular position. Regarding napping it very much depends on if I have been exposed to some really intense learning whether I have a good 10 to 15-minute nap. I also can choose to fully wake up feeling recharged or know that I need to stay asleep a couple of minutes more.

    Wow, the bit about melatonin supplements actually having extra serotonin in them sounds scary! I'm on sertraline for my chronic anxiety disorder, which is an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Re-Uptake Inhibitor). It basically stops my brain from disposing of the serotonin in there too quickly since I otherwise don't have enough. I'm on a controlled dose of 100mg a day, so if I accidentally took something with hidden serotonin in without knowing I could easily have serious consequences. Sertraline is really common in the UK too (it's the first antidepressant/anti-anxiety drug NHS doctors prescribe), so that would affect a lot of people.

    As I reached retirement age, I started snoring and it was getting louder. I tried many things and finally found the sleeping on my left side eliminated almost all of the problem. Preferably also have the head bowed with the chin closer to the chest. Right-side sleeping was less effective. Sleeping on the back is the worst for snoring. One thing I discovered was that if I kept my mouth shut, I couldn't snore. The sound comes from the mouth, not the nose.

    Adulting means trying to find a sleeping position that works for your head/neck injury from a horse fall, a shoulder injury from a dishwasher rack that broke when you went to unload it, the low back injury that required cortizone shots because you dared sit down into a chair, and the post nasal drip and turbinate reduction that fills your stomach with snot because your allergies are off the chart.

    3:20 - For anyone who sleeps on their stomach w/ their head sideways... A thinner/softer pillow really does make a huge difference but the "revolution" for me was when I started laying my _sternum_ on the pillow so that the bottom of my jaw is only just touching the top of the pillow and my face/head flattens out on the bed. This position makes the pillow work WITH the curve of your neck instead of against it and it really is amazing if you've ever struggled with a crick in your neck from stomach-sleeping.
    Bonus FYI - I've gotten "sleep paralysis" a couple dozen times in my life and _every single time_ it was when I was sleeping on my back instead of my side or stomach and studies have indeed shown that instances of sleep paralysis are much more likely when sleeping on your back...

      I'm not saying a partially collapsed lung can't/doesn't cause sleep paralysis but I'd bet a million dollars to one it's one of the least likely culprits and that there's zero connection between it and the malevolent visualizations that only occasionally accompany individual incidents of sleep paralysis.

    House plants... a 5 gallon bucket with a huge pot in it.... green onions cutting off the green and putting the bottoms in a wine glass with water in it... they developed tops and roots, planted them in the bucket pot, water heavy ever week or two... might get another harvest... in the kitchen/dining room.

    I don't use a pillow when I'm on my front. I move around a lot throughout the night, so I'm never in just one position. Recently I've found halfway positions comfortable, using feather pillows for support. By this, I mean half on my front half on my side with a supporting feather pillow in front of me, or half on my side half on my back with the pillow behind me. Nobody talks about these halfway positions, but I really like them.

    My sleep schedule is very hard to work with. If I had my way, I would go to bed at 3:00 am and sleep till noon. It's very hard for me to fall asleep early enough to get up in the morning. I often have to force myself awake with ridiculous amounts of caffeine, which has resulted in chronic stomach upset. Because of this pattern, I'm very prone to getting into sleep debt, which I try fix by drinking more coffee. It's just a vicious cycle. Occasionally, I have no choice but to take a stay in bed day to allow myself to rest.The problem is so bad that I got in an accident on my way to work because I had made myself wake up early and didn't give myself enough time to have coffee. I lost my license temporarily because of a suspected sleep disorder and vowed to no longer accept jobs that require me to wake up before my body is ready. Also, I take naps whenever I can, they are my saviour.

    St. John's wort is a really good depressant for moderately depressed but sometimes it makes people extremely sleepy that even my olanzapine can't mimic.(Your sleepiness carry out the day unfortunately) If you have that side effect taking really small amounts is enough for a good night's sleep more than a good mood.

      St. John's wort may work for some, but for me it was awful. It made my emotions fluctuate wildly at times, and even caused feeling paranoid. I was not taking any other supplements or medications when I tried the St John's wort.

      @@starshine377 It is an antidepressant. Antidepressants usually make emotional fluctuation in the first two weeks(their antidepressant effect starts after two weeks) but you really shouldnt take it if it caused an adverse effect.

    Answer to right side sleeping is not eating less than 3 hours before sleep. I stop eating at 5pm, about 6 hours prior to sleeping. Side sleeping also keeps the airway clear if you have mild apnea. Napping isn't good for insomniacs and terrible for keeping circadian rhythm regular. I can't even sleep during the day, I couldn't fall asleep if I really tried.

    I thought I was a non-regular napper because I never had chances to nap during the day. But 3 years ago, my work schedule allowed me to nap for 15-20 at around 2pm and it help boosting my productivity ever since 😁

    I love when people say “ask your doctor”. I live in America and am not fantastically wealthy so not an option.

      I also live in America, have been below the poverty level for most of my adult life, and I have access to fairly good healthcare. My provider is even connected to an app called MyChart that records everything and notifies me when I’m due for something- basically like a readily accessible medical record and AI assistant. I guess it depends on which area you live in and what’s accessible there, as well as knowing what resources are available to you as a person who’s not “fantastically wealthy”🤷‍♀️

    You all know older people wake up early. That is why you always see them taking a nap after 1 PM. Dont mess with your grandpa when he taking a nap. 😂😂😂🙋‍♂️
