As a person living in Hong Kong, thank you so much for bringing awareness about the housing problem in here. It's really heartbreaking to see these problems. I used to live in sub-divided flat where my parents and I used to live in one room with shared bathroom and kitchen. Luckily, after few years we moved out and I have my own room now. I'm really grateful for everything and thank you again for bringing awareness. Prayers to the people who live poverty in Hong Kong and other countries ❤️

The solution to HK housing issue is building house underground or high above in the sky. There goes the imaginary housing problem real quick.

It looks like HK is better than Australia because $300 would get you nothing. Just homeless. These are low skilled labourers who live like this not the average worker who lives in nice homes in HK.

I was never a fan of your content but THIS. This video earned my respect and admiration. Thank you for coming to my city and highlighting the humongous gap between the rich and the poor here in Hong Kong. Most expats in HK aren't aware of these issues, or choose not to be aware of them because it's just more comfortable to live that way. Thank you for bringing it into light.

I used to work at the house of one of the richest individuals, who owned huge properties all over the world. Each house had numerous spacious bathrooms, but most of the time, they were only used once a year. Consequently, the houses remained empty for the majority of the time, with only security personnel and housekeepers present. However, now I find myself witnessing the stark contrast in one of the poverty-stricken areas. People are sleeping near toilets, surrounded by mice. It's truly a world of stark differences.

as a person living in HK and have seen these houses. It so heartbreaking. Many families who live in these houses also have extremely low amounts of budget for food and other resources. They may have to feed a whole family of 4 with HKD$100 dollars each day or even lower. It's important to regonise how blessed we are to be able to live in air conditioning, let alone a clean and stable living condition.

I heard abt these HK cage homes. It's a really sad situation. No one deserves to live in cramped and shared places like those shown in the video. I also read somewhere that the local government does not suffer from a land scarcity problem. As HK is a tax haven, the gov relies on leasing out or selling land for revenue, hence they'd rather deal with private developers than using the land for more public housing. But please correct me if this is wrong! It's always interesting and sobering to look into social issues in a different region.

In the middle of downtown Seoul in South Korea, there is an old residential complex with a similar Brutalist feel. (Sewoon Sangga Apartment) This one crosses the middle of the old town in downtown Seoul. (1km) It is similar to Kowloon City in Hong Kong. Between 2019 and 2022, an Italian architectural group built a well-designed connecting bridge deck connecting these apartments, and popular shops and cafe bars were created on the bridge. However, it has recently been controversial as the mayor of Seoul and construction companies are trying to demolish these buildings.

It makes me wonder when we (the world) had this tidal shift where we no longer value our parents, or our grandparents…
It makes me appreciate my own family, and my own very humble, but outright owned by my partner and myself, home.

When I was young, I lived in 深水涉 too. We had a room that fits one bunk bed and a table. The kitchen and bathroom are shared. When it is time for sleep, My grandma would take me to her place because my dad sleeps on the top and my sis sleeps with mom. My. Grandma has a similar size room with a bunk bed. My uncle is on the top and I slept with my grandma. My parents and uncle was able to purchase a small condo with 2 bedrooms. I continued to sleep with my grandma in the living room. Few years later, my family immigrated to SF. Our living condition has not changed until I got married. Now, I am living in 2 bedrooms with our own bathroom and kitchen. I finally don’t have to sleep on a sofa bed in the living room. FYI SF also has pod that costs around $700 that I saw from the news recently.

you know whats the problem? its because the private housing price in HK is so expensive, which is much higher than its actual worth. So when public housing comes into the district the price of the private housing drop sharp and therefore people that uses housing to invest is opposing it, just like what happened in Kai Tak.
