The reason why Bendis 'grew' him up is because he didn't want to write about a kid. It's anyone's guess how old Jon is mentally anymore or what he true personally is. DC wanted a new Superman, and the writers really didn't care how they got it.

Lois and Clark are both kicking themselves into letting Jon go off like that. I love that in this film Superman actually said "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" I hated how the comics and other media went with "Better Tomorrow" It's as if before they were ashamed that Superman was pro-American there's nothing wrong with Superman upholding American values after all he was raised in the United States. Superman can both be a hero to the world and be pro-American and I hope that in future media American Way is kept in his speech as it's part of his identity.
You can thank the liberal politics for the change. I would have been satisfied with just shortening it to Truth and Justice. The new quote of Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow is just pandering.
I never understand what people fret over changes. Part of dealing with the ones own mortality. Is realizing that, As you age less and less people are going to agree with you. Old comic book heads like to sit in their fortress of solitude (Mother basement whatever 🤣) only concerned about how much their collection is worth. On the other hand the current community of comic lovers are buying. So of course comic writers knowing this. Are going to follow the norms and ethics of the people that are currently purchasing. (So if Superman is going to be sold more internationally he's going to be a global hero). So all the clamor were hearing on the internet basically falls under that meme. "Old man yells at cloud"
