    At 17:14 Stephanie mentions that the 2 turmeric to 2 saffron Trade card is the same as the Upgrade-2 card. Actually, the advantage that the Trade cards have over the Upgrade cards is that you can do the trade as many times as you want in one action, so for example, when Aaron turns 3 turmeric into 1 cinnamon (28:12), he could have done that twice in that action, and used his other 3 turmeric with them to turn 6 turmeric into 2 cinnamon. If he had 3 more turmeric, then he could have turned 9 turmeric into 3 cinnamon. Upgrades and Harvest cards can only use their ability once per turn though.
    Really fun playthrough! Love watching GN!

    I really appreciate the post game discussion. It helps me to make up my mind about playing the game. You might think that in 2024, gamers have decided about whether they want Century: Spice Road or not. But I haven't, so I appreciate the playthrough and discussion.

    Just played the beautiful Golem version, and want to add that I grabbed the "3 upgrade" card right away. However my opponent won, 72-76. Fantastic game!!!! LOVE your review, quality of the video and the GREAT discussion from everyone at the end. Thanks for posting!!

    Have Stephanie on always. I’ll be honest, when I do watch these vids it’s just to see if I’d like a certain game or to learn how to play. I was shocked to find myself smirking and enjoying the video for its own sake. It really goes to show what a difference even one wise-cracking person can make. In the other videos I’ve watched, folks were wooden, here they all loosened up more. Other videos were dry play-throughs, this had personality.

    This is a really beautiful game. Not something I think I'd go out of my way to play - but could be fun with the right group. This is my first episode of GameNight, and it was refreshing to watch a candid game video where the players are genuinely having a good time with one another.

    Saffron is cheaper than Cardamom and Cinnamon ? Lol I would love to exchange all my cinnamon and cardamom for your saffron.
    EDIT: For those not familiar with spices, saffron is one of the most expensive spices on the planet. 1 lb of cinnamon whole sale ~ $15, 1 lb of ground cardamom ~ $75, 1 lb of saffron = $500 - $5000 depending on quality

    • @heccubus1
      @heccubus1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      d4rksol123 we looked it up when we played. It seems that cinnamon was very expensive and still is. The cinnamon most of us encounter is Cassia. True cinnamon is much rarer. Thanks for the note and for watching.

    Gamenight, I love your videos! I feel so relaxed when watching them. I think more people should watch your videos. So I have a recommendation, play harry potter a battle at hogwarts! It has 7 rounds in it so make a series of it. Please do it. Thanks!

      shawnieyang ya i know but if we skip it, how will they get to know the full concept of the game, but ya i agree with you that game 1 and 2 are too easy and fast. So I think they should combine those two games in kne video.

    @1:05:20 - Dave mentions the luck about certain cards coming off the deck that allow people to straight up purchase them. I feel like it happens even more in Splendor, especially at the later stages of the game when people have more discounts.
    I do agree though, I don't like the idea of those random extra coins/points for objectives at the end of the row.

    Was considering getting this, but since it seems to be rather dry resource conversion - and I already have than in the form of Harbour - I'll wait to see if the sequel set 100 years later adds anything more to it.
    In Mystic Vale, one of the "bonus mana" tiles each player receives has a mark that indicates that player is the starting player.

    I think I'd like it more if the coins, instead of being "random" bonus points, were a ressource the players started with, and could use to reserve a contract. So if you use them, you lose the point they are worth at the end of the game, but that would allow for more interaction.

    • @stephstrawgames
      @stephstrawgames 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a really interesting suggestion. It definitely brings the game closer to Splendor, but I really would have loved to have saved some of those cards haha! :) I might have to try that.

    • @kayrilzendergor
      @kayrilzendergor 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not a game designer, for all I know, that could completely unbalance the game, but those coins as is seem really random :p

    • @rjkral
      @rjkral 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They do seem a bit random, but it's cool to have them. Someone suggested above perhaps having them more in the middle instead of at the end, that's a really interesting suggestion (couldn't comment on their post though, no reply button)...that way it ups the ante cuz cards might travel PAST the coins. There's a POSSIBILITY they should be worth more too.

  • @TimothyPetersphoto
    @TimothyPetersphoto 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think there may have been some missed opportunities with the trade cards which could cause a player to "catch up" to another player in terms of grabbing a points card. When trading you can perform the action on the card as many times as you wish on your turn as long as you have the proper sets of cubes to do so. It also alleviates the issue of having your board filled and feeling stuck since you may be able to trade a color you are heavy in more than once. I don't think that was explained in the rules nor did I see anyone taking advantage of this rule.

    • @stephstrawgames
      @stephstrawgames 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I forgot about this and didn't think about it until after. I should/could have used this better in my first play.

      @TimothyPetersphoto 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stephanie Straw Oh well, it's not like I've never I've gotten or rule wrong or didn't remember something I should have done especially in a new game! Just wanted to make sure people understand that you can trade cubes multiple times on a single card during your turn.

  • @scottsmartky
    @scottsmartky 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This game makes me really wonder if it wouldn't be better for the point card collection be a free action after you do another action. That would stop the "just build up and wait until someone either bumps it into coin territory or can take it" aspect since that is free information. It just seems like the table is going to divide itself into colors, based on what cards pop up in the action card row, so there is already a limited rush to get the scoring cards. The game looks fun as I like engine building games, but there just seems to be that little bit lacking to push it into a very good game.

    The levels of spices from Tumeric to cinnamon deceive you into thinking that they are more valuable, at least with scoring, but the fact is that it is more about the engine than the actual value of the spice. I felt sucked into the cinnamon thing, but you can score points just as fast without cinnamon.

    • @rjkral
      @rjkral 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's what I love too about this, the "highest" crystal in the Golem version might only become valuable at some points so that you can DOWNGRADE it!! I like that your engine, in my opinion, needs to constantly change.

  • @CrystalblueMage
    @CrystalblueMage 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's not really a huge gamble to go for green when there is no card. It could mean noone else will AND green will come eventually, and with a higher chance if none is out already.

  • @tomwakefield1726
    @tomwakefield1726 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    51:05 I did notice that, while most of the points cards values were determined by summing the values of the individual cubes, the card with one cube of each colour seemed to be scored higher than expected using that method (12 rather than 10). Seemed odd if it was just that one which didn't fit the pattern

    • @Punko1969
      @Punko1969 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wasn't just that card. At 31:49 when Nikki asked if the 20 card that was turned up was the highest in the game, Dave repeated the assumption, but the 20 card didn't add up either. 3 brown = 12, plus one green (3) = 15, plus one red (2) = 17, plus one yellow (1) = 18 total. The card used all 4 spices, so maybe that has something to do with the extra points, but it's clearly not a set in stone rule for the cards. I thought I spotted one earlier as well, but I'll just keep an eye out for the one you spotted (I paused the vid to see if anyone else spotted the misinfo).

    • @Punko1969
      @Punko1969 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the card you saw used all 4 spices as well. That's probably the reason for the extra points.

  • @LazySleestack
    @LazySleestack 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've played this game several times and while I like it I don't love it. The strategy for the game is kind of flat and a bit too easy to figure out. It essentially boils down to, produce as many "points" worth of spices as you can with each action. And the way the cards work there are some that clearly generate more points than others. You will want to start building toward the highest point card you can right away, but if someone ahead of you in turn order is doing the same it will be all but impossible to beat them to it, unless they make a major mistake. Kind of a like a more complex variation on tic-tack-toe.
    For example, the two starter cards each produce two points. Either produce two 1 point yellow spice or upgrade an existing spice or spices twice.
    Cards you can "recruit" from the lineup usually net you between 2-4 points. If you get lucky and are able to grab a couple 4 point cards early on it will be hard for anyone to beat you. Even a single 4 point card, like the one that produces 1 cinnamon, is a huge advantage, especially early in the game.
    Overall, like I said above, it is fine. There is almost no player interaction. The way you play your game has almost nothing to do with how other people play theirs.

    let's see if this really makes Splendor obsolete

    • @goyasolidar

      I don't really like Splendor, but I'd say no. Both games are equally devoid of theme but Splendor has a tighter decision tree, is less fiddly in its engine building, and plays quicker. As a tactile bonus, Splendor has those chunky tokens that are pleasing to handle. None of this is to say that this game isn't good, though. The wider range of decision-making this game offers has its own appeal and makes it different enough that I wouldn't throw one game out just because I owned the other.

      I like Splendor, but most of the folks in my game group didn't care for it-- possibly because I tended to win most of the time-- that could be because I'm now more familiar with it. This one could have that problem too-- if you're new to the game and lose the first few, you might not feel like playing it after that. I guess I should throw the first games with a new player in order to get them hooked on it... :-) I'll probably be getting this one, so I'll be a little more careful about winning and see if it goes over better amongst my crew.

      typically if i'm playing a game i'm really familiar with against newbs, i like to try some obscure or new strategies that i've always been curious about. I don't really mind if i lose their first few games, but after that, all bets are off.

      Unfortunately, on Plan B's site it's around $30, the same price as the entire game on several game sites (Miniature Market, Cool Stuff, etc.)

    At points its hard to follow the game when there's so many cuts from the board state to people's faces. Would prefer a picture in picture style to really show off the game.
