Do The Crescent Lufkin SHOCKFORCE G2 Tape Measures Live Up To The Hype?

  • Tape measures are 100 percent a personal preference item. Crescent brought out new Lufkin G2 SHOCKFORCE tape measures and claim they can take a 120-foot drop. That is interesting. They also claimed to have the best stand out. Our Dewalt beat them in the stand out test, but how does one do a 120-foot drop test?

My experience with these Lufkins is that the tape is uncommonly susceptible to tearing.

I mentioned it, but I buy the Dewalt models when they are on sale, so I don't have any fat boys.

I'm extremely picky about tape measures. I recently bought a Lufkin G2 16' nite eye. It breaks at 13' 4" which is really impressive to me. One of my favorite tapes, which I still have, is an old Big Johnson from the early 2000s. It has a detachable belt clip and is still my favorite and for that reason I retired it since you can't find them anymore and back in the day the name was really cool

So Home Depot recently stocked a husky brand tape measure that has a white case. Right off the bat I love that the coloring makes it easy to distinguish when looking at a bench full of tools that are mostly yellow and red. Saves me a lot of time if I set it down and forget where I put it. If I had to guess I think Dewalt makes them because they’re similar to the fat max tape line. FYI I have purchased and used every tape measure and tape measure brand under the sun over the years. This one is super durable. I haven’t had any issues with anything and I’ve had it for maybe three months now. I’m a cabinet maker so I normally choose the 16’ but I also did get the 25’ tape for when I go out to measure jobs. When it comes to the price, nothing can beat it. I’m pretty sure it was half the price of the leading reliable tape measures if not more. I think the 16’ was 10 bucks. I go to Home Depot a lot so I noticed is they’re mostly sold out all the time. I got lucky and they must’ve stocked them the night before or something because every variety was full when I bought mine. At the end of the day it is definitely a contender, and I haven’t had any any problems or any degradation of the measurement reliability, which is something that I prioritize because a lot of times I need to be accurate to a 64th of an inch or more.

Great channel, great review. As a framer tapes are expendable, rain , snow, dirt, mud , ruin them easily.
Milwaukee tapes are too fat and expensive. Fat Max is expensive but the best. The best compromise of durable and inexpensive is the 30’ (has to be 30’) dewalt atomic . $19..
We buy new tapes every two weeks. Lufkin is a homeowner brand .

As a finish carpenter try to find the best for the job.
I tried out luftkin nighteyes it is my general purpose tape, like the large numbers contrasting colors all aid in fast readings
Milwaukee stud for long reaches crown molding and decks.
Fat max auto lock at my miter and table saw
The old power locks are in my garage.

Nice review. When I was a kid in high school in the late 60s I worked in a local retail plumbing & hardware store and had a 1/2 wide 12' Lufkin seemingly permanently attached to my belt. It took a lot of abuse. I still have it and it works flawlessly. As time passed I wanted wider and longer tapes. Have several brands including a newer Lufkin. IMHO, the Stanley Fat Max is the best thing going today.

I personally fell in love with the tough series tape when i grabbed one. I got 13' standout w mine measuring a living room the other day. The xp tape is good for trim bc the hook makes it easier to grab edges of stuff but it feels too cumbersome for anything else

There is one I like you said it is individual choice to what you like or don't like. That is honest and thank you for sharing. I have cheap tapes and for what I do. They work-Milwaukee, Lufkin, Craftsman, old Dewalt and Klein is what I have. I grab it and it measures.

I have been using that Lufkin Nite eye and really like that one. However the tape hook bends fairly easy. If I don't use the Lufkin, than i'm definitely using the milwaukee stud! that thing takes a beating and keeps on going! I think you cant go wrong with any of the major brands at the $30-$35 price range.

We have several DeWalt tapes and even the latest DeWalt Atomic tapes. All our tapes are dummy tapes, but it sure helps improve measurement accuracy for those that don't use tapes on a regular basis.

The force of dropping from 120 ft is different from slamming it from 5-6 ft due to terminal velocity.

Last Lufkin I had in my hands was paper thin in the blade. Never seemed like it would hold up without ripping. Also not a fan kd the 1ft mark vs 12" but that's just being picky. Would like to try the G2 and see if it seems more sturdy

I've had some Milwaukee's. Didn't like any of them. DeWalt tough system has been my favorite for awhile. Got a crescent nighteye gen1 and was disappointed with how quickly the numbers wore off. Got a nighteye g2 and it has some good improvements over the gen 1 but the tape still seems to wear off pretty easily. I think it's because of the crazy bend the tape switches too a few feet in causes extra wear

In my Trade i usually use mode of a 16ft tape (but always have a 25 un toolbox) whats different with 16 is that you want something compact in your hand.. you dont want a very thick curved Blade since youll use it for more precise and small measurement. And you dont want those tape with metric reading🤦
I mostly am a "purpose tape Guy" i have a Lufkin for early job site measurement, i have a good private Branded old school chrome one .. Left handed on my table saw (90% tape are from Left to right, So i have one right to Left) , i have a CenterPoint tape with inch measurement on one Side a d halde measurement on the other( Really usefull ) and i like Fastcap Branded one for all around with a place to write and a pencil sharpener on it. But after a couple years, the first inches get erased

  • @eosjoe565

At least most of the Lufkin's case dimensions are a whole number. So many tape measures have cases which are like 3-1/8 or some other weird fraction. How do they expect folks to add 3-1/8 when measuring inside dimensions? 3-1/8 + 18-5/16 in your head? Some have even weirder fractional case measurements.

    • @IcedFlameX
      @IcedFlameX ปีที่แล้ว

Thats easy, 1/8 = 2/16 so 21 7/16. You just have to get used to it, though I do have to agree that it is annoying.

  • @histguy101

If Craftsman usa made their high end wide laminated tape measure to be double sided, I would use them exclusively. I like white tapes and always had trouble concentrating on yellow. I don't get how Craftsman can charge $35 for a tape and _not_ make it double sided. You can get a Klein or Milwaukee, et al for that price.
Tape measures do not last very long unless you're an electrician or something, no matter what the brand.

The stand out feature is about useless past 8-10 ft imo. Im more concerned with fit in hand, how smooth is the tape in and out, hook design and retraction speed.
