Timely video, I have to confess, built a couple of three cylinder Johnsons, but will be BACK to the 'Max v6 that was cutting out last year like it was running out of fuel. SO will have to follow your lead ( Thank you ) and go thru and test the stator....as with his, mine will fire right off, but once out in the water starts dropping cylinders. In the garage it has 122 lbs on all cylinders and what looks like a hot spark...and I have a new fuel pump. And a filter so I could see if there was contamination.....fuel was clean ...
hello,Sir. What is the connection between rectifier and ignition. As I know, they are independent systems. What purpose of disconnecting the 2 yellow wires from the rectifier? Thank you.
The 2 Yellow wires feeds the rectifier pulses of alternating current. The rectifier converts it into direct current which charges your battery. A bad rectifier can mess up your ignition. Son
I have a 90 inline 6 testing testing the wires from the switch box to the coils with a DVA meter adapter I get around reading jumping from 180 to way high... is this the trigger or stator?
I have a good question I have a 1978 mercury 500 50 hp that keeps blowing stator and switch box. I replaced wiring, trigger, coils rectifier is the after market switchbox's the problem or could timing cause this I am stumped any information would be appreciated
@@MerCSonL6 it seems it was the switch box, also 98 mercury 150 carbed. I put it in the water and even though the rpm’s are going to about 4 to 5k the boats not going over 10mpg like I’m dragging an anchor. Hey @MerCSon L6 I have just discovered your channel and it has been a very useful tool. I just aquired a 1977 1500 and slowly trying to get it back to its original condition. First I just wanted to say thank you for the videos. And second, what website or company do you use to get your parts? I know you go hunting but ol' mercs are in short supply from where I am from. Thanks again and keep up the good work!!
I just rebuilt a 1992 115 and put alot of research into it , I'm not sure if I'm looking at the motor right but it looks like there are idle adjust screws on the two bottom carbs? If I'm not mistaken this engine is the same as my 1992 and on mine there's only 2 idle adjust screw on the two top carbs , this engines a 2+2 meaning it runs on the two top carbs below 1800-1900 rpm and the two bottom carbs "kick in" due to the vacuum created at 1800 rpm and they can not be adjusted , I have heard of people trying to remove this feature by replacing the two bottom carbs with two top carbs from an existing motor and it's not recommended as it causes a ton of issues and you'll never get it to run properly, hopefully this info helps
Thank you for your input. All 5 of my boats are on the water. And can do without your negative thoughts. If you are so "correct" make your own channel. I will subscribe to your worthless videos. My channel helps people for free. Thank you. Tell your wife I say hi 👋! Have a great day my friend! Son
Looking for a way to contact you personally. FB, insta, email? My motor only works because of your videos, I’ve already fixed 15 different things, but something new keeps giving out. Thanks.
Its great you say that. I recommend 1/4 inch inside diameter for his fuel connections between carbs because he has 1/8 inch and by the time fuel reaches the bottom its minimal/left over because the top 3 carbs gobble up the fuel/oil. Son

Good stuff. Would love to get an update on the owners next test run under load.

Stator. 180 is not high. It typically ranges from 150-250 if my memory serves me well. Son
@@MerCSonL6 My meter is jumping all around like 160 to over 1000 is the stator bad or do I have a bad meter?

The 2 yellow wires going to the rectifier have AC current ?
Correct.
Great video. I don't understand where 250 voltage comes from. low voltage of coil should be 12V
If I'm understanding your question correctly it comes from the switchbox capacitor. It charges up the voltage and shoots it to the coils. Son
got it, thank you
Some pic are reversed, no biggy, I learn on your tube channel, so keep up the great work.
I’m getting intermittent spark on cylinder 2 people say it’s the switch box?
What year is your engine?
