- On Monday morning, 22 August, His Majesty the King of Norway’s Guard paid a very special visit to RZSS Edinburgh Zoo to bestow a unique honour upon our resident king penguin Sir Nils Olav. Already a knight, the most famous king penguin in the world was given the new title of “Brigadier Sir Nils Olav”.

@Soumyajit Nag - i forget the exact story but it is something like, penguins were given as a gift, many years ago. To honor and celebrate that gift they have this event every year. Since penguins do not live very long they have to keep selecting new penguins from the decendants of the original penguins to honor by promoting them within the armed forces.

Hail Sir Nils Olav! This humble penguin shows that despite being raised by a white collar penguin family from the cold dark south pole, miracles do happen if you believe in yourself.
In his short but powerful speech he expressed deep gratitude towards the king penguin and fellow guard mates.
Adding that this was possible because due to perserverance, a can-do attitude, daily excersise (powerwalk and swimming), good habits, seafood diet, and having goals in life.

He Made The Nils Olav Be The Colonel of the Norwegian Guard
For those wondering what's going on: The penguin colony in Edinburgh Zoo was originaly established with eggs given by Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen, most know for being the first person to reach the South Pole. In honour of his memory the Norwegian Royal Guard descided to adopt one of the penguins as the company's mascot, and later, in the 1960s, they began the tradition of promoting him up a rank every time the Royal Guards attended the military festival in Edinburgh. Since penguins don't live that long his name and rank is inherited by his oldest child, and after many years and many visits Nils Olav finally became a knight and general. It's just a fun teambuildng tradition for the company

The only military forces near Antarctica is the US Coast Guard and the British Coast Guard; they use ice cutters to break large icebergs so ships can get through safely. They also conduct search and rescue missions if a science crew is hurt or lost.
