Klaatu is so exquisitely all over the place! They're retro. They're progressive. They're grunge. They're classical. Sir Army Suit is THE most under-appreciated collection of all time. Terry said in the opening remarks that it's "artwork", and that it is. The only other collection of works that blows me away to the same extent is the Moody Blues "Days of Future Past" (also greatly under-appreciated). "Tokeymor Field" is absolutely in the top 5 of my all time favorite songs. The arrangement, especially the vocals, and the quality of the engineering/mixing (not to mention the musicianship) is outstanding, especially considering when it was recorded. And like "Cherie", "Magentalane" and "Dear Christine" it's a hopeful, musing celebration of the things that make life exciting and fulfilling. It reminds us of that proverbial silver lining, "And with one great big beautiful smile / You bring out the sun for a while". I play that whenever I find myself needing a lift...
OMG!!! I just found this video by accident and am BLOWN AWAY! I love this group! Being a HUGE Beatle guy myself, I never fell for the rumor back in the day, that they were secretly the Beatles BUT… I loved the fact that they had the Beatles melodic sensibilities coupled with those brilliant George Martin type arrangements. And to hear John Woloschuk perform my FAVORITE Klaatu song “A Routine Day” solo on the piano is a dream come true! I’ve always LOVED that song. I’m also an astronomy nut and always related to the guy with his head buried in a book on Mars. That’s me at every mundane job I’ve ever had! And the cherry on top was to hear Woloschuk say that he was inspired by Gilbert O’Sullivan who is my other HUGE musical influence. Then he mentioned loving “Alone Again (Naturally)” and made my heart sing as I’ve always considered that song as one of the most beautiful melodies of all time. John Woloschuk is brilliant and cut from the same cloth melodically as McCartney and O’Sullivan, as am I. Man what I’d give to sit and have a beer with those guys. To hear John Woloschuk speak (BTW, it’s the first I’ve ever heard him speak!) and then the few words to come out of his mouth were to give a shout out to GOS.. well… needless to say, that had me grinning from ear to ear. Of course it was really no surprise and I could always tell from his chord changes and beautiful melodies that JW is obviously very much a student of the McCartney school of melody but it was all the same, GREAT to hear him give props to the brilliance of O’Sullivan also a composer heavily influenced by McCartney. “A Routine Day” gives me goosebumps still to this day. I mean right from that powerful opening F6 piano chord that, just like the Beatles’ “Hello Goodbye”, prepares your ears for the exciting musically delicious entree that’s coming… Woloschuk hit it out of the ball park with this one. Even has that perfect Lennon/McCartney harmony thing. Sooo melodically powerful and musically interesting. Pure brilliance. I could go on and on with songs like “Sub-Rosa Subway” or “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft” but anyway… All three of these Klaatu guys are musical geniuses and we the people of Earth are all the better for it. Thanks guys! :)
@@RedVynil Pretty sure that's Terry Draper. Don't think John has released anything since the 80's. In a 1997 interview he said he essentially quit music completely.
I got hooked on Klaatu with their first album, and loved every song they have made. "Silly Boys" is a close second to "Little Neutrino" in terms of my favorite songs ever.
Perhaps Klaatu's most beautiful song, deep and sad lyrics. This band should get back together and give us their music again. They are already big, but talent is not lost...
I forgot how much I loved Klaatu back in the day! And, it's wonderful now to hear the stories behind all those songs. Thank you, Klaatu for making the world a richer place with your music.
Thanx 4 share since Brasil i found klaatu in 1978 in a popular fairy the LP and i loved we're off you know and long live politzania.... the whole album is simply fantastic 🤗
"3:47 EST" blew me off my feet when I first heard it, and I was an instant Klaatu fan. "Hope" was even better, and I still listen to them today, on the first release vinyl. You guys were so far ahead of your time, it's no wonder most people didn't "get it". Who cares about top 40.
I watched the debut of the animated video of Routine Day on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert in '78. Klaatu's Sir Army Suit was cool but their Hope album is one of the greatest and most under rated of all time in both the rock and classical genres.
Thank you for posting this video! I instantly fell in love with Klaatu when I took a chance and bought the poorly engineered double disc of their first two albums! It is so cool putting human faces to the band members. And it is totally surprising. John seems to be such an introvert, Terry would be right at home walking into a bar or club and talking the owner into hiring them on the spot, and Dee has a science fiction writer vibe about him! Maybe I too will move to Mars!
Greetings from the UK! Absolutely wonderful video, thank you so much for posting this. I’m embarrassed to admit I although I’m an old geezer I wasn’t aware of Klaatu until last year. I was inspired to start work on a cover version of Calling occupants, it’s been challenging but fun so far, hoping I can do it justice!
Great to see and hear John play Routine Day solo and love Dee's interviews and solo presentations of his songs and the gear used. 3:47 est and Sir Army Suit are my fave Klaatu albums.
It's interesting that Routine Day was inspired by Gilbert O'Sullivan, I've always liked his work. But it would also fit perfectly on Days Of Future Passed by The Moody Blues. It also hints at the middle part of A Day In The Life _The Beatles Sgt Pepper, where the singer is telling about his usual morning routine. And maybe even Good Morning from the same album.
Love this! I’ve been a fan since the first album. Little Neutrino is probably my favourite, followed by Around The Universe in 80 Days, Silly Boys…but I’ve never seen the band members or heard any of these stories. Wish I could find a copy of Magentalane on CD to complete my collection.
One night I was in hotel across from Nathan Phillips Square. I’d brought my skates from Thunder Bay. I saw they were shooting a movie on the rink. So I went across and became a skating extra, without permission. But I digress....
A cvollegue gave me a cassette with the Hope and EST albums in late 70's. That tape was later discarded or lost or given away, but still, Klaatu was still in my head. But wasn't until I had become a grumpu old f@rt I bought the first 4 album and still have Magentalane on my "must have list". Just ordered three Terry Draper albums. Two notices: When I was you I had a crush on a girl named Christine ... very appropriate. Back in the late 70's or early 80's was a cool radio program (here in Sweden), cannot recall the name, but as intro, the programs used the last minute of We're Off You Know.
A record store owner in 78 turn me onto "Sir Army Suit", great album, which led me to getting the two previous ones. Should've been a bigger selling band.
Great video. I loved this album and all of their albums. I had an artist re-create the album cover. It was done as a high school graduation gift for myself in 1979. And what about the writing of certain parts "Silly Boys",,,lol. I think I know how that was done.
Superb natural (as opposed to schooled and/or studied) musicianship, originality, and songwriting talent, just the formula for guaranteed obscurity in these post-Beatle times. More's the pity. I love these guys and what they've done, even if I'm in a distinct minority of the population.
Tell John that "Stalactites" are the ones coming from the ceiling, so "-Tites" from the TOP. Stalagmites, are the ones growing from the ground, or MUD, so "-Mites".
Omg this is the exact Klaatu content I've been looking for, where did this come from?? I became a bit obsessed with Klaatu 2 years ago as well as artists like Emitt Rhodes and Badfinger. Is there similar footage like this for Hope or any of the other albums?
Its pretty awesome how the Beatles paid these guys to cover up the Klaatu mystery. There js just no way in hell anyone could come that close to the Beatles production, just no way. The albums are littered with British accents and London Orchestra. So many interesting clues, not to mention Paul and John's connections with Toronto Ontario, very good boys, alot are fooled but not me lol
In the song: Calling occupants of interplanetary craft, Klaatu sounded very British to my ears back in the day. It must've been intentional or maybe it wasn't. I thought maybe the group were UK expates or something. Then I would hear Klaatu singing other songs, then they sounded Canadian/American. A very versatile band.
I believe the interviews were done for the DVD with the 2013 remaster of Sir Army Suit and the animations being made around 1978-1979 for the half-hour animated special "Happy New Year, Planet Earth". However, due to complications, the only animation that was finished and released was A Routine Day. The DVD is the first time the previously unreleased animations were available to purchase.
To add to this, Happy New Year, Planet Earth was actually showed at Klaatu-Kon 2005, but I don't think any of its contents (save for A Routine Day) have ever been officially shown anywhere aside from the DVD.
I'm really glad that I found about Klaatu! They really become one of my favourite bands out there.

no he meant that he was gonna talk about the artwork "I wanted to talk a bit about the Sir Army Suit album, its artwork and how it came to be.
"
Agreed

A great band... especially their first three albums.
Su último disco también es muy bueno
I love klaatu
Damn, John still sounds amazing. Really wish he hadn't quit making music, he's one of my all time favorite songwriters.
I agree! I REALLY love hearing that guy talk as well.
He's got at least 17 solo albums out! At least one more since this was recorded.
@@RedVynil Pretty sure that's Terry Draper. Don't think John has released anything since the 80's. In a 1997 interview he said he essentially quit music completely.
@@MidosujiSen I know. I can't imagine why I would've said that about John! It CAN''T be booze or drugs because I don't do either!
He has not! I have many of his solo stuff..last album was in 2022!
My top 4 bands of all time: The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Bay City Rollers....and Klaatu! So glad I found this.
I got hooked on Klaatu with their first album, and loved every song they have made. "Silly Boys" is a close second to "Little Neutrino" in terms of my favorite songs ever.
Those chord changes on Routine Day are wonderful. Anything but routine.
in my top 10 LP's of all time. so beautiful.
Perhaps Klaatu's most beautiful song, deep and sad lyrics. This band should get back together and give us their music again. They are already big, but talent is not lost...
What a amazing band so ahead
of its time ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You can really tell Terry loves the work he did with Klaatu, as he should.
Love "A Routine Day" -- song and animated video are next level.
I forgot how much I loved Klaatu back in the day! And, it's wonderful now to hear the stories behind all those songs. Thank you, Klaatu for making the world a richer place with your music.
You did do everything well 👍
"Perpetual Motion Machine" is, to my ears, a brilliant homage to The Moody Blues....just check out the harmonies in the chorus. Magic!
Tokeymore Field! I always loved the “doot doots “!
Yes. They work beautifully.
Hope is my absolute fav, Still listening to it, CLASSIC
Agreed!!
👍👍👍👍👍
Ridiculously beautiful in every way, John Woloschuk. This is among my favorite songs ever written.

Recently discovered these guys but good lord they are excellent.

Awesome, brings back so many memories. I remember seeing Routine Day on Ton Kirshnners back in the day,
This is beyond amazing, I never knew they did more music videos other than a routine day.
I thought that was the only one they ever made.

Amazing!!! This is so fantastic, thanks Terry, Dee and John. Love you guys! ❤️
How cool!

Are you high again?
Nobody said they were. Just that they sounded a little bit like the Beatles back then.
