  • This episode kicks off at the very bottom of Te Wai Pounamu, the South Island in a town called Bluff. Bluff is home to the best oyster in the world- the Bluff oyster! The Bluff oyster or Bluffie as it's often called locally is sold only in New Zealand. There is a strict quota system and once all the oysters are caught for the season (approximately March to August) that's it! We head out with the team from Fowlers Oysters to the Foveaux Strait to catch the oysters before returning to shore to watch them shuck the oysters before we eat! Get ready for never before seen, exclusive access of the Bluff Oyster’s journey from ocean floor to plate.
    Aotearoa New Zealand has a rich food culture that revolves around the land and the fresh food it provides. In this massive NZ series we’re travelling the length of Aotearoa to take you into the heart of New Zealand’s cuisine. We’ll share how New Zealander’s gather and cook from the land, take you into the kitchens of New Zealand’s favourite restaurants and uncover the traditional food of Aotearoa. #newzealand #bluffoysters #oysters
    What we ate and where we ate it:
    1. Bluff oysters at Fowler Oysters, 99 Ocean Beach Road, Bluff 9814, New Zealand. Open daily during the Bluff oyster season which runs approximately from March to August.

      Thanks for watching mate- it was a very special day. The Fowlers crew are super passionate about making sure they’re fishing sustainably- the size of the oysters they’re taking are much bigger than the size limit and they’re more often than not throwing back legal sized ones to give them a chance to grow more. So glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers, Sheena

      each person / company with 'quota' for Bluff dredge oysters can harvest only the quantity stated on their Govt. issued license. Within the area permitted.
      And that amount is determined by NZ Govt fisheries scientists who continually check the health of, and quantity of the population..... along with any trends that are positive or negative. We are really into regulations in NZ, particularly for seafood sustainability.
      Any breaches of terms of quota are heavily punished. They have fisheries officers all over the place to police the regulations.

    *_professional sorter_* - Sheena gettin' her hands dirty @6:33. 👍
    *_Fush N Chups_* - Googled of course and I guess I kind of hear it. 😀
    Absolutely loved the harvest footage and commentary. 3:30 AM 😳 Happy you were able to connect just days before the end of season. Going out to sea reminded me about close to shore harvesting/farming especially in bays. You may know that runoff from major city streets or farms halt oyster harvesting until the waters are tested and given health inspector approval. That happened to me in Sydney. A day after a heavy downpour restos posted notices that they were out of oysters until the all clear. Fortunately it was around day 10 of my visit so I had had my fill by then. 😀 Same precautions in the U.S.
    *_Excellent day, guys._* Rare opportunity to get up close and personal to something we love. I'm sure you both will never forget this experience and will have an enhanced appreciation every time you dive into a dozen half shells.

      So happy you enjoyed this one Tosh 😍 Hahaha I was in bed by 7pm that night- the guys must have been stuffed! Thank god you’d eaten your fill of oysters on that Sydney trip! Thanks for that travel memory and the reminder of how farming close to shore can be affected by runoff. I wonder if that happens often here? I’m gonna look into it!
      It was the experience of a lifetime getting to head out with the team. The oysters we ate on the boat will be the freshest wild oysters we’ll ever eat EVER. Absolutely unreal. Thanks for watching and commenting on this episode mate, hope you’ve enjoyed this series! Cheers, Sheena

The oysters are humongous!! I can see now why lve seen you enjoy them previously battered and deep fried, the meatiness really allows for them to be enjoyed like that. You never cease to amaze, guys! Your dedication to your craft is just beyond compare. To get up at 3 in the morning, to go out on an icy sea, with cold air and spray whipping around you...it not only demonstrates what the fishermen go through to bring these delicacies to the land, but your own dedication and respect for them. Just WOW! The camera and editing work are outstanding, so it truly felt like I was there with you. AND you got to chow down on those gorgeous oysters!

    Ooooh if you told me I had to choose one food item and could eat only that for the rest of my life it would be oysters. You should try and get to Cancale in France if you ever get the chance. Delightful video and so much respect for the fishermen. I have oyster envy and I totally agree, take them just as they are, no lemon needed. I'll take 12 of those and that's just for starters

    Do Bluff oysters ever get shipped out of New Zealand? I'd love to compare them to the mostly west coast oysters we get at our local grocery stores, oyster bars and restaurants in California. We have several oyster bars in my county, and you are inspiring me to go to one with outside seating once we are out of the purple and red zones for you know what. Stay safe, eat well!

    • @brilliantbutblue
      @brilliantbutblue 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No not really. The taste is altered anyway if shipped frozen. Your best bet is to get them in season in NZ. You won't find them fresh outside of NZ.

    • @danmunro01
      @danmunro01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You’d need to come to NZ sometime to try them. You’d have to leave your amazing summer weather to brave our winter to be in the season. I’ve tried oysters in the US and Europe. They’re good, but are nothing compared to Bluff oysters.

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They had a go exporting them to the US market many years ago but they weren’t very popular apparently! They’re now only available in NZ and people go nuts for them. Bluff oysters are over rated. You want the best oysters go to coromandel, creamy and sweet and bigger.

      Love Coromandel oysters 🤤 They’re so different to Bluffies though- you can’t really compare them! Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoyed the video. Cheers, Sheena

    Wait how is this good for the ocean floor ?

      Probably not great Billy Butcher. Dredging is the main method for harvesting oysters, scallops and clams worldwide. I believe in the UK there’s some use of toothless dredges which reduces the impact of dredging. I don’t know enough about it to comment with authority. Thanks for watching and commenting. didn't see any ocean floor being dredged up..... saw many dead shells and many live oysters though. It certainly didn't harm the sea floor. And didn't benefit it either.

      Hi Maria, thanks for watching, this isn’t intended to be an oyster mukbang video where all you see is us stuffing our faces. This video is more about the journey of the oyster from ocean to consumer. If you want to see more eating you can check out this video we filmed last year where we just ate: th-cam.com/video/pR5j4IH86U0/w-d-xo.html Cheers, Sheena

    Dredging should be outlawed. They are ruining the sea bed with those heavy dredgers.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. The Foveaux Strait has been dredged since the mid 1800’s but i don’t know enough about the topic to comment on whether it should be outlawed. Cheers, Sheena

    Pt 2 Any other name confuses people. Since our country depends on tourism.
    Respect to indigenous people, I understand their point as well. Just an opinion

      I don’t think so- it’s like being aware that Germany is also referred to as Deutschland. It’s just educating people really. Cheers, Sheena

    The name of this country is NEW ZEALAND.

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure is. Māori is an official language of our nation and Aotearoa is commonly used alongside New Zealand which is why we use it in this video. Thanks for watching Brad. Cheers, Sheena

      @@ChasingaPlate yeah it's commonly used, but if you want to use Maori for South Island things, it is "Te Wai Pounamu".
      Aotearoa is the name of the imaginary old Maori Nation which never existed as it was a land of different tribes who generally had disagreements.... it was a series of territories rather than one united Maori country.
      Aotearoa is commonly used alongside New Zealand...... but it's so wrong at so many levels.

    Now I am hungry, I have eaten those oysters, they are the best, but the price, wow. There were similar tasting oysters here, growing on the mangrove roots, but some kind of toxic tide killed them all, where I was getting them, that happens every 40 to 50 years, so no global warming bullshit comments.

      They’re so tasty. Bit of a special treat at that price but so worth it. Thanks for watching. Thomas.
