LEGACY NAPCO CONVERSION

  • Legacy Classic Trucks is best-known for ultra-modern, highly custom versions of the classic 1946-1968 Dodge Power Wagon. Legacy founder Winslow Bent grew up restoring military vehicles with his father, and the World War II-inspired Dodge WC Power Wagons are an extension of that passion. Legacy also does a modern rival of the classic Jeep Scrambler.
    Legacy's latest creation is a tribute to the original Chevy/GMC 1/2-ton 4x4. From 1955-1959, 2WD 3100-series pickups could be retrofit with a 4x4 system from NAPCO. The kit came in a crate: front axle, divorced transfer case, driveshafts and shifter/linkage. The conversion could be done in a few hours, and NAPCO used several factory GM parts, such as brakes, so that dealers could easily service these trucks.
    Original NAPCO-converted Chevy/GMC trucks are some of the most collectible classic pickups. Most classic Chevy trucks that are revived either get a factory-style restoration or are slammed for the streets. Legacy Classic Trucks decided to take a different approach. The Legacy Chevy Napco 4x4 Conversion pays homage to the original by raising the profile. Premium components include Dynatrac axles, Warn hubs, Trailready beadlocks, Toyo Open Country R/T tires, a choice of GM crate engines, the Advance Adapters Atlas transfer case, Classic Instruments gauges and Horween leather upholstery.
    “We’re excited to revive interest in the Chevy Napco, which I think is one of the greatest trucks of all time,” says Legacy Classic Trucks founder Winslow Bent. “The Legacy Chevy Napco Conversion combines the personality of the original Napco with modern performance and handling."

    My dude, explained is spot on with "these truck were made for work/hauling and off-road exploration!" Sure they look badass too slammed down as a hot rod, but they're more better lifted and getting dirty!

    • @varun009
      @varun009 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't say that I like the hotrod look, but I'm not about to judge someone elses preference for them. I also can't say I appreciate how hotrod culture has ruined tens of thousands of good classic cars, but, your car your call. I guess I'm just angry about being young and poor. I would love to own a late 60s muscle car, but you just can't find old ones anymore for a decent price. Trucks are still good if you're looking at 70s models. Chevy square bodies are sti cheap.

    You Got it right, they were "converted" from a two-wheel drive, to a four-wheel-drive in that era. There are people that own those, that don't know that history.

  • @AaronJohnson-kx7nn
    @AaronJohnson-kx7nn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I was not from the era not even close...but I probably know more about Napco history then most the people that know what Napco was...or from that era....Ive owned 4 different Napco and the one I really most wished still had was built for forestry fire...and it was a panel suburban with clam shell back doors...and completely there and as far as I know had not always kept in service but a running driving truck before I got it...and was very unique

    • @AaronJohnson-kx7nn
      @AaronJohnson-kx7nn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And very nice and solid

    • @AaronJohnson-kx7nn
      @AaronJohnson-kx7nn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      But really 2 wheeldrive straight axle leaf spring font end...by the year 1958 they where able to have them converted record time was in the shop and back 4wheeldrive some said just under 4 hrs....but you do know how much faster and better you where after you know longer do as a profession...

    • @AaronJohnson-kx7nn
      @AaronJohnson-kx7nn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Divorced Rockwell gear driven transfer cases....closed knuckle front ends....and where smart with...the 3rd member drop out in stock rear was used up front....the backing plates for front brakes where set up so same front brakes as 2 wheel drive...they where quite the right that could go to local Chevy dealership and buy a truck with a napco conversion dealership would have sent down to California in the beginning then started sending conversion kits out to some dealerships to do the conversions there...because of demand and shipping trucks around people would end up getting 1 yr old tnew trucks from time ordered

    • @AaronJohnson-kx7nn
      @AaronJohnson-kx7nn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's why there is a well documented 54 old gen with VIN as a 55 Napco conversion because...

    • @AaronJohnson-kx7nn
      @AaronJohnson-kx7nn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The 1st truck that was Napco conversion was actually a Studebaker and was driven from dealer ships to dealer ships across the U.S. as a demo sales thing...and they where not just gm dealerships they aimed to sale that conversion

    So i have to ask, it was mostly explained but i wanted to ask for sure. Is any amount of this truck actually off a 55-57 truck? (for the record i'm hoping you'll say they aren't, because i know of several companies that make those cabs brand new.

    A number of them came to my country Indonesia from 1940 something to 1970 something. The pick up was driven by a 6 piston, 3100 cc engine. In USA i found driven by V type 8 piston. What cc capacity, i dont know. U Americans love bigger power n bigger sizes.

    Question why would you double clutch? Is it a non synchro manual trans? Why would you want a non synchro trans? Unless you're a big fan of grinding gears, otherwise this is an awesome truck.! I agree with this guy, this is functional history, a real usable truck, not some trailer queen or the stupid fad of dunks, krunks and clunks. Finally some one with common sense.

    Very nice build! But why are you calling it Napco? If you are starting with a 2x4 it wasn't a Napco truck before, and if you aren't putting Napco parts onto it you aren't making a Napco truck. This is an awesome build but don't call it a Napco. It's confusing. The Napco is a highly desirable original truck.

    Incorrect NAPCO info, not all these trucks were "upfitted" at the dealer. Yes it was done that way until 1956 when GMC started building these on the (assembly) line using Northwestern Auto Parts Company components. Chevrolet started building line trucks mid year 1957. Chevrolet's were a very basic truck for surveyor's, miner's, and rancher's. Many have been retrofitted with other components. If you wanted V8, auto, PS or any other options you went to GMC. Yes, have owned a NAPCO Task Force since 1966 and currently own a restored 1957 Chevrolet 3100 in Sandstone Beige color. Possibly the only one factory painted this color. Love these trucks!

    Very talented guys obviously. I'm in the Midwest and been restoring since 1980. Not on your level, just very nice daily driver rigs. Sold over 200 '67-'72 Chevy/GMC 4x4's. My target price has stayed in the $10,000 in the early days to around $20,000 now. My demographic was my age guys around 58 during my whole career, so they just wanted a nice bone stock driver. What is your round about price for something like we just saw in video? I was going to do a '58 because that was my birth year, but instead of building I think I will just order one out from a reputable company like you guys. Please e-mail me back a price. Thx. a lot. Jim.
