Everyone is saying that everybody else missed the point of the whiplash, including author. But u know what makes piece of art really great? That everyone has its own opinion about it. Like whiplash for some it's toxic relationship, obsession, for others it's inspirational and motivating. We all have different on our minds, but no one can doubt that whiplash is great and must watch
@@Xavier28200 Fletcher will respect his skills and Neimen will respect him as well because of his skills and ability to push someone, but they won’t respect each other as a normal human being, if that make sense. Kind of weird but you once you think about it and put in your perspective you’ll know what I am talking about.
I don't think Fletcher was full on villain, which while I know is a general consensus, here's my take. One thing that stood out to me was after he first abuses Neiman is that instead of saying some cruel shit like 'Dont even consider putting you fucking ass in that seat till you earn it', he simply says 'practice more'. I know its weird but there sounds like a degree, of care and I think Fletcher did genuinely see talent in Neiman but that intiall spat was to test if he was willing to put up with that and fight for right. I think the main problem with Fletcher was he didn't fully comprehend the irreversible damage he was inflicting on his students, and formed a sort of tunnel vision in trying to make them the best.
I like this! Though I want to pose that it’s possible Fletcher could comprehend it, but his goal prevented him from truly caring until it was too late (ie Sean Casey), and I say this because even after he causes his death, Fletcher doubles down. He feels genuine remorse, but it’s not enough to deter him, and this is further proven when Neiman almost dies in the same way Fletcher pretended Casey did (car accident) and Fletcher still shows him no mercy. It’s made clear in the original script that Fletchers pursuit is personal; he never achieved the greatness he aspired to himself, and now he is desperate for it in any capacity. He has highly narcissistic traits, essentially. If it weren’t so rooted in his ego I don’t think he’d have been quite as cruel.
@@alistair1315 I don’t wish to stir up any internet arguments, but the point of the film is the dangers of obsession. How a healthy part of your life can turn into something negative if you sacrifice everything else in the pursuit of it. This video on the other hand focuses on the positives and paints the movie as inspirational, when it is quite the opposite.
@@jetset413I’m usually not one for responding to TH-cam comments that aren’t on my own videos, but here we go. For whatever reason, obsession has been glorified in some popular media. But what obsession is, isn’t being really good at something. It’s being alone and suicidal because all you can do is one thing. That one thing doesn’t bring you joy and it isn’t enough to base a life around, so you become depressed and empty. Wondering why you have no one you care for, because you have pushed them all away for this one thing.
People call it obsession, i call it dedication
where does it go too far, and where is it used little, the thin line is what matters
the protagonist got obsessed.
That shot of Neiman’s dad through the door always gets me

What Fletcher says right here is actually good advice if you want to be the best

They won't respect each other as normal human beings because they AREN'T normal.
Neiman isn't human. He never socialised.
Doesn't matter. Director has the final words on what the movie means.
