It gives me the same vibes as the (usually white upper middle class) women on Tiktok that talk about flags that people are looking to traffic you that could be otherwise explained by people just being people, "If there's a tissue outside your car door on the ground, it means they're tracking you" etc. It just serves to sensationalise trafficking and completely neglects to acknowledge the fact that most people are trafficked by the people they know. All it does is encourage paranoia and profiling strangers, which always ends up circling back around to racism...
Actually in the original digital release and in the still available short story in the same universe those rich dudes were EXPLICITLY Jewish. I'm talking Jewish surnames and stereotypes about their features. She changed it in the print version because she got called out, but the side story afaik still has a lot of it. The books have been accused of being Qanon fanfic and I fully believe that's true. If you google the book plus antisemitism you can find some of the damning evidence. Nasty.
>fights guys who traffic women >later goes on a whole paragraph about how he wants to "break" this woman and "forcibly make her his" my brother in christ you're the guy you should be fighting
This was literally one of the nastiest parts of the book. Inserting the plot point of fighting human trafficking, something that especially affects women and young girls, then turning it around and making the "male lead" a violent, possessive piece of shit. So, controlling, abusing, and assaulting women is suddenly hot when it's a man you're attracted to? Truly horrific. This book set women back at least 100 years. Edit: Something about it also tells me Zade "fighting crime" was a plot point put in to defend the rest of his actions. Like, uhh, he rapes and stalks a poor woman, but at least he's hunting bad people!!! That excuses it, surely!!
@@libby2122its such a piss poor excuse too because he does the exact same thing! It's just so obvious the author is trying so hard to justify it when they didn't even need to because it's DARK ROMANCE
This is so obviously written by some racist suburban housewife with a cop husband who willfully refuses to understand what sexual violence and human trafficking actually look like in the real world. Real life human trafficking doesn't look like a random brown guy kidnapping women from their nice middle class lives. It looks like an abusive boyfriend coercing his girlfriend into doing s*x work even though she's not comfortable with it, or a step father abusing his stepdaughter when the mom is at work, or a landlord forcing a tenant to do s*x acts so she doesn't get convicted. Undocumented people are MUCH more likely to be victims of sex trafficking than perpetrators.

@@Sharpe1502 I remember one listening to a really goofy alien romance audiobook, and the narrator was reciting off some tangent in a particular voice, begins to laugh and softly say "can I do that again?" Then proceeds to do it again. They just left in, and it was glorious. So campy, so trashy.
Why do these writers name their love interests like millenial boy-moms name their kids? Like "Zade" doesn't sound like a badass vigilante, it sounds like the crying blonde toddler in a Wal-Mart
Him calling her little mouse gave me food poisoning 💀. I hate when love interests use nicknames like “little + small animal.” Mama… that’s a grown woman
lmao i've watched people who actually can hack try to figure something out. Hacking is literally the art of googling something, googling another thing, seeing if there's someone who already did something you want, then frankensteining together a solution from the code of 4 other people with a few lines to make it work in your specific application. Certainly a real hacker *can* code things from scratch, but only an idiot does that for everything ever when it's often days of work compared to an hour of modifying something you found on github. Especially when everything is in a different language, no shit someone's gonna have to look up what something means when they need to read assembly or something if they aren't constantly writing in assembly (rare these days). The amount of googling does depend on what you're doing specifically, like is it reverse engineering, web exploitation, cracking, etc? But no matter what there will be googling. New tech is always being developed, and new tech means new vulnerabilities and new patches
@@silentraisin ah yes that is why I love working in comsci and cyber sec, nothing ever changes, and all you need to know has already been published 😂 (joking of course)
Honestly should be a confidence booster for writers out there. What you write probably won't be any worse than something H.D. Carlton, E.L. James, or Cassandra Clare has written. Assuming you don't look up to them as writers, then you probably will write something as bad as them idk 😂
@@paigeh4231Idk, I feel like Cassandra Clare at least is a better writer. I never really got into her stuff, but I heard her writing improves throughout the series she writes.
@@joyc.e.7511 fair enough. I haven't heard much about her later novels. I read a few many years ago, but none since because they were bad. But I totally get that people can improve over time with practice.
You know when a writer is lazy when they just TELL you how good a character is at something; with no showing, no proof, not enough background information to backup the claim. You as the reader just have to trust and believe if he's said to be the GREATEST hacker of ALL TIME, then it's true! If you don't believe it... maybe you're just underestimating the character!
This is why i remain A Little Life hater on its description of multitalented Jude (jokes aside, i do like the friendship a lot, but the constant telling instead of showing is painful)
As a therapist who works with many kids, teens, and adults who've been trafficked, it is KILLING me to hear about this book. I can't even make a witty comment because it is truly so out of a movie plot instead of even a teeny bit of research into trafficking. Also I can't believe this book is acting like he's a total pro on trafficking but doesn't have a SINGLE predator who's trafficking a family member; the vast majority of domestic trafficking is done by family members, and I figured a book so focused on edge would've jumped at the chance to use that statistic. Which is just more proof to me that they didn't do any research into this.
Way too many people have this weird hero complex/ fantasy about finding these big bad guys who are tormenting the innocents. Yet they conveniently ignore the actual facts because “none of my family would do something like that”
I think Ben is worse since he literally refuses to believe he’s doing a horrible thing. At least Zade (wattpad-ass name) is like “I’m stalking her, I’m craaaaaaazy”
they're on the same scale mentality wise tbh, you got 1 toxic abusive man that's always right, and a SAssaulter that knows his wrongs and still does it, not knowing that by "breaking the rule" once, he's that label forever. (like you can't be trusted not to do it again when you've crossed this fat ass line)
what if instead of delivering roses he gave her rose toys and the end of the book or whatever addy just has a mountain of rose toys in a closet and like she opens it up and she gets buried in rose toys and dies
That's the thing about stalkers: you don't have to be anything special to end up in their crosshairs. As far as I know, I never had a real stalker, but this guy waited outside of my house and exposed himself to me once when I was walking home from work. I'm a regular, average person. I was just there. Sometimes, that's all it takes
@@DarwinRoger893 yeah, it was several years ago now and I don't live there any more or work that job anymore. But it did mess me up for a while. I think the worst part was trying to get the cops to take it seriously (spoiler: they didn't even though I gave them a full description and his license plate number, even though he almost ran me over with his car when he saw that I was getting his plates.) It was also terrible because I knew that this guy knew where I lived, and because it brought up past trauma. But I lived! Thanks for asking and sorry for the rant
Nice to know you're okay. I was also flashed by a guy, in full daylight, jumping out from behind a tree outside my apartment complex just a few days after moving to a new city and I just stood and stared at his back while he ran off. I hadn't even unpacked. It's shockingly common.
@@msjkrameythank God you're alright. You'd think cops would take cases of stalking seriously considering how many people die from that 🙄. I'm really happy to hear that you survived that. That's such a horrible thing to happen to anyone.
A roommate of mine showed a picture of us roomates to one of her coworker who decided I was to be his wife. He nagged my roommate who, eventually, very akwardly told me about the situation and asked if she was allowed to give him my number. I said no and thanked her for asking me first. I had been flooded by stange friend requests for some weeks and I realized it was him. Then he slipped up and told my roommate he had snooped in their boss's office for her documents to find our adress but it was totally fine because he just wanted to send me poems and maybe some flowers and not do anything creepy because he was a romantic and a good guy and she didn't have to worry 'bout it. I moved.
This reminded me of a tweet I saw. A woman's neighbor was asking her why her bedroom door is always locked. To which she responds with, how did you know? Turns out that the neighbor tried to get inside her house to "surprise" her.
.... Are you at least sipping tequila with an sombrero hanging in the background? This "just existing" is ruining the vibe of this book. You really should think of the team, myself, as a woman, cut the brake-lines on my car and put all my money into blockbuster stocks ten minutes ago just to fit the theme.
Whenever I search up book recommendations that are similar to Jane Eyre, I get "Haunting Adeline" and it makes me want to chuck my phone against a wall.
I HATE how Addie is labelled The Manipulator. Why? Because she's attractive. It's literally an Incel Dog Whistle - Why Female Hot if Not Want Me? And don't even get me started on the "Of course it wasn't grape, she had an O!" justifications. This book is straight up Qanon Fan Fic.
I really dont get how someone who works on trafficking can think about anything else on the job. Or have sex/ think about anything sexual a second after.
couldn't stand these books, but my fav thing about it is that adeline is such an obvious self insert from the author. literally just describing herself. they're twins. cracks me tf up. sincerely, a brown eyed mexican.
It’s like the only way the author thinks a character can be “grey” is that they’re overall a horrible person but “hot” and think r*pists/p*dos are bad even tho he’s the same. Also I just hate how this book is written 😭😭 very wattpad coded
Nahh idk which way the cycle turns but I've of late been quite frustrated with fans seeing an _actual_ morally grey character and either complaining that they "ruined the villain" by making her have moral standards, or that she's actually a good person who would never commit any of the villany she canonically continues to commit Is there bo moral greyness because audiences can't comprehend it? Are audiences bad at spotting greyness because they're being fed sh*t ? Has it always been like this?
Yeah that's how bad writers get around writing actually interesting and nuanced morally corrupt characters. They just introduce someone way worse. Like if the character is a killer, they'll introduce a rapist. And here since the love interest is both a stalker and a rapist he then HAS to fight child traffickers. It's lazy and doesn't really redeem him at all, it just makes him seem like the biggest hypocrite on earth
I hated this book so much. I’m so angry at the writer. I would like to write her a 10 page letter about how she wasted my life. The 2nd book is too much sec trafficking for me. It’s not handled properly. She tried to make him like Batman. He is not.
I DNF'ed it when he first sees her picture and there's like, an entire page of "she's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, she doesn't need surgery or Photoshop, she's so perfect, I'm obsessed", it reads like a fanfic that a 13yo would have written about her favorite artist.
That's the most laughable part of this book. He just sees her and starts monologuing. It's especially funny when you realize that Adeline is a self insert for H.D Carlton. How do I have imposter syndrome when authors like these exist?
The scene where he’s just hiding in the grass outside her house with a rose in his teeth, combined with the fact that you called him a husky, it’s giving me smile dog like the creepypasta? and I can not get that image out of my head. Imagine being stalked by smile dog. Imagine smile dog mailing you severed hands. I’m losing my mind.
What I first thought of lmao. Honestly sounds preferable in some regards. At least it's an actual dog and not a horny half-husky half-human bush baby looking headass who has an inexplicably endless supply of roses at all times...
I realized a big problem with most of these books is that they're panickly trying to make the guy seem like a good person despite everything he does to the MC. Like... Why?? Imagine if the authors of these went all in and actually treated this guy character like he's doing bad things. It could've been a nice psychological horror but instead it has to be the "I can fix him" thing.
i wanna go back to this… i don’t think that when zade says archibald “grows a vagina” that he’s calling him a coward- rather, it’s zade doing a hashtag #feminism and belittling the phrase “grow a pair” because you know, he thinks women are strong, courageous, autonomous even-
tiktok are just gooners in general 😭😭 theyre so desentisized by everything that they only care if the book has 100 chapters of ppl rawdogging in every sentence.
stuff that makes me so mad abt some of these sexual scenes is that like, addie saying that she is in control isn't even explored as like, a way of her denying how her desires actually put her in harms way, it doesn't serve as anything for her character. like, if the book was a serious dark romance, it would try and explore how addie's danger kink actually led her to a dangerous situation where she can fucking die if she tries to oppose this man in a way that isn't sexually satisfying right? it could create conflict abt how she enjoys so much of it but is also not as in control as she would like and doesn't know if she can even stop him if she stops liking it but the author is so worried abt these themes being too uncomfortable to the readers who want to get off to sexy dangerous hacker assassin man, which is very ironic, given this is supposed to be a dark romance anyways
Yeah and the most confusing thing about these stories is that it's always the man taking the control over the woman and not the other way around. If addy took control of her stalker and uses him for sexual pleasure (as well as explore those themes you discussed) then maybe it might be appealing but the story would still need to properly frame or at the very least not try to justify the stalker
Another thing that gets me is the constant lampshading too. It would be better if Addy just made deliberately bad choices bc she wanted to and not bc she's a self proclaimed doofus all the time
is “An array of computer screens line the ten-foot long desk, and all my other illegal devices in here.” the actual line from the book? 😭i can’t get over how that implies that the desk is an illegal device
Booktok hackers: A hot bad-boy with a massive desk full of contraband in a dark and moody room, masterfully evading firewalls as he edits hundreds of lines of code. IRL Hackers: A trans catgirl on her laptop finding the TSA’s No-Fly List casually sitting in an airlines unsecured server.
I genuinely don't understand why people enjoy this stuff??? Like... why? Okay, you got a weird kink, sure, that's fine, we all do, right? But... folks, yall deserve better than this. Y'all deserve things that are written WELL.
i remember the first time i heard about haunting adeline and thinking it was some cool horror game with some psychological themes kinda like silent hill. you can imagine the face i made when i found out what it really was. these authors must stop with the cool titles only for the story to be slop......
REAL!!! I tried reading it because of recommendations, I genuinely also thought it was something similar to Silent Hill!!! I fricking love SH and man I was so disappointed 😭
I already knew what happened in this book from another TH-camrs review, but god, the part with how Dia talks to Adeline and Adeline hesitantly describing the confusion she has with consent is really, really heartbreaking, especially with Dia immediately responding by teasing Adeline and making it about kink, when you consider how overwhelmingly SA victims doubt themselves and blame themselves, often making excuses for the person who assaulted them. It hit very, very close to home, where I still struggle to describe my assault as an assault because of "liking it"... I know you bring this up anyways, but man, how awful. I keep forgetting that stories that do this kinda stuff can be a trigger for me. Anyways. Great video as always, happy to see you tear apart these books! :)
ok but. what's the deal with the hands. she got *severed hands* in her mail. and... THEN WHAT? what did she do with the hands??? i feel like at the point where you've been on a hot date where the guy disappears leaving only blood behind and then get SEVERED HANDS in the mail and you DON'T tell the cops you're now straight-up accessory to murder. like bestie.
Adeline’s weird speech reminded me of a video I watched called, “Euthanasia Fan Fiction” where the TH-camr Owl Criticism breaks down the story and message of the book A Little Life. He references an interview with Hanya Yanagihara (the author) where she essentially says that some people may be so irreversibly traumatized and damaged that they are beyond healing and, “better off dead.” And then there’s Adeline over here saying, “Sometimes people just aren’t meant to live through that trauma.” It’s a weird message to send to your BookTok audience.
I wrote a fanfic in one afternoon while recovering from wisdom teeth surgery, and I posted it to AO3 that same afternoon without having anyone beta read it. I think it’s still better than Haunting Adeline.
The "I don't understand why I'm doing this, I'm so dumb, I shouldn't do that! *proceeds to keep doing that*" thing has a name. Its lampshade hanging, usually shortened to "lampshading" is a writing and/or manipulation technique, which involves intentionally bringing attention to something, in the context of writing it's usually blatant abuse of tropes, completely improbable situation or characters acting like no human ever would, and then just continuing without missing a bit, as is pointing a finger at something dumb was enough of a reasoning and explanation for it, and the author is now magically absolved. In the context of real life, it's a manipulation technique, in which a person brings attention to their flaws or bad behavior, often in a self-deprecating way, and then acts like that makes it okay. And it's manipulation, because it preemptively strips the other person of the ability to call that behavior/trait out, because then the manipulator will say something along the lines of "Yeah, I told you I'm an asshole" and expect to be forgiven. In writing, it doesn't have to be bad, even Shakespeare lampashes in the Twelfth Night, so it can be used to create humor or restore the suspension or disbelief, but they more often than not are just annoying XD In real life, they just suck, don't do that, if you know, you're doing somethign bad, just acknowledge it, change the behavior and reconcile with those you have hurt, just saying it's bad doesn't fix shit.
no bc I read the blurb in a bookstore a while ago and thought *i rly hope Cindy covers this ‘cause I am definitely not reading it myself* and lo and behold 💀

I think It's funny how this book is so popular that it's literally recommended to EVERYONE, no matter what age on Amazon. But it's also hard to miss inside a Barnes and Noble.
I am so confused??? So booktok girlies want a "dark romance" but then also need the "morally grey" main dude to be "justified" in his actions. Like, just make him a killer - maybe for some personal revenge or whatever - that is at least a little bit more complicated than one who kills only p*dos, bc thats just the easiest way to write a character who kills ppl and can still be the main love interest. Why are "dark romances" always (borderline) abusive relationships betwenn a /tall dark and handsome/ dude who is "morally grey" and a "sweet and innocent" woman, and not about two equalky fucked up ppl who do fucked up shit together ???
Yeah I hate this about dark romance. The guy always has to be good deep down and a hero at the end, also the relationship dynamics are as traditional as you can get, just because they use guns in her instead of a vibrator doesn’t change the fact that this is a heterosexual couple in which the man is domineering and the woman is submissive despite being written as “sassy” to make up for her lack of a backbone. Dark romance authors love to put the genre as something that’s subversive but it’s nothing of the sort, if anything it just reinforces gender roles even further within the romance community.
I am a bookseller and have to look at this book every day ... currently it even is on the bestsellers list here....thank you for going through this so I dont even have to think about picking it up😅
Maybe it's just the ace in me but I've never understand why books harp on how long it's been since the character's had sex. Is 1 year really that long?
obviously there are a million toxic things about this story, but personally, i really can't stand the mental gymnastics that addie does throughout the entire book to convince the reader (and herself) that she's in charge/has all the power. the book is CLEARLY catering to a submission kink in literally every possible way, but the author's ashamed to even have the character acknowledge they enjoy submitting? i just don't like the implications being made here at ALL. you can be a feminist and still enjoy giving up control during s*x. you can even be a feminist and enjoy being straight up degraded. the fact that the author is clearly still struggling with how she feels about women and sexual submission tells me that she has NO business writing a dynamic like this
Yeah like at that point, why not make ADDY in control then and have her stalker submit to her. That would've actually been a far better book than this.
Your hair looks cool! I know the black is probably your natural color, but I've been so used to the blond on you that my brain keeps thinking you've dyed it black and are having a goth phase.

lmao i've watched people who actually can hack try to figure something out.

Like do they think we don’t know…
It’s like the only way the author thinks a character can be “grey” is that they’re overall a horrible person but “hot” and think r*pists/p*dos are bad even tho he’s the same. Also I just hate how this book is written 😭😭 very wattpad coded
Nahh idk which way the cycle turns but I've of late been quite frustrated with fans seeing an _actual_ morally grey character and either complaining that they "ruined the villain" by making her have moral standards, or that she's actually a good person who would never commit any of the villany she canonically continues to commit
Is there bo moral greyness because audiences can't comprehend it? Are audiences bad at spotting greyness because they're being fed sh*t ? Has it always been like this?
Yeah that's how bad writers get around writing actually interesting and nuanced morally corrupt characters. They just introduce someone way worse. Like if the character is a killer, they'll introduce a rapist. And here since the love interest is both a stalker and a rapist he then HAS to fight child traffickers. It's lazy and doesn't really redeem him at all, it just makes him seem like the biggest hypocrite on earth

That's the most laughable part of this book. He just sees her and starts monologuing. It's especially funny when you realize that Adeline is a self insert for H.D Carlton. How do I have imposter syndrome when authors like these exist?
The scene where he’s just hiding in the grass outside her house with a rose in his teeth, combined with the fact that you called him a husky, it’s giving me smile dog like the creepypasta? and I can not get that image out of my head. stuff that makes me so mad abt some of these sexual scenes is that like, addie saying that she is in control isn't even explored as like, a way of her denying how her desires actually put her in harms way, it doesn't serve as anything for her character. like, if the book was a serious dark romance, it would try and explore how addie's danger kink actually led her to a dangerous situation where she can fucking die if she tries to oppose this man in a way that isn't sexually satisfying right? it could create conflict abt how she enjoys so much of it but is also not as in control as she would like and doesn't know if she can even stop him if she stops liking it
but the author is so worried abt these themes being too uncomfortable to the readers who want to get off to sexy dangerous hacker assassin man, which is very ironic, given this is supposed to be a dark romance anyways
@@Lemoncakelover678 I have tried looking for romance novels that have women in control and they are shockingly few and far between.

Why are "dark romances" always (borderline) abusive relationships betwenn a /tall dark and handsome/ dude who is "morally grey" and a "sweet and innocent" woman, and not about two equalky fucked up ppl who do fucked up shit together ???
women can't be morally grey, they can only yap about having choices and daggers in these stories.
@@DarwinRoger893not true. I've read many where they are deprived together. Do more reading before you generalize
"I am not a potato" TOOK ME OUT LMAOOOOO 😭😭
Closeted Furry author creates a metaphoric book about dogs disguising it as a dark stalker romance
Born to be a furry, doomed to be a dark romance girlie
Colonial insult to injury to dogs and animals to even be in the same sentence, let alone this? The trees did not deserve this?
I screamed so loud when I heard the kitty cat line from the audiobook that my cat jumped off my lap and left 😭🙏
I am a bookseller and have to look at this book every day ... currently it even is on the bestsellers list here....thank you for going through this so I dont even have to think about picking it up😅
Seems like anyone can get on that stupid bestseller list
Maybe it's just the ace in me but I've never understand why books harp on how long it's been since the character's had sex. Is 1 year really that long?
honestly i dont think its a big deal to not have sex at all even for several years or ever
I have been YEARNING for another rant review!!
now u get one in 2 parts!
@@withcindy You should God of Fury. It's the fifth book of the Legacy of Gods but forget all the other books and read God of Fury
obviously there are a million toxic things about this story, but personally, i really can't stand the mental gymnastics that addie does throughout the entire book to convince the reader (and herself) that she's in charge/has all the power. the book is CLEARLY catering to a submission kink in literally every possible way, but the author's ashamed to even have the character acknowledge they enjoy submitting? i just don't like the implications being made here at ALL. you can be a feminist and still enjoy giving up control during s*x. you can even be a feminist and enjoy being straight up degraded. the fact that the author is clearly still struggling with how she feels about women and sexual submission tells me that she has NO business writing a dynamic like this
Yeah like at that point, why not make ADDY in control then and have her stalker submit to her. That would've actually been a far better book than this.
@@Lemoncakelover678preach
@@Lemoncakelover678 especially since the guy is absolutely obsessed with her.
Your hair looks cool! I know the black is probably your natural color, but I've been so used to the blond on you that my brain keeps thinking you've dyed it black and are having a goth phase.
hahaha it IS unusual to see me with black hair since its been so long to go natural!! technically i DID dye it black to go back to "natural"
It's nice to have someone to summarize a bad/triggering book so that my urge to read it dies on the spot
I gotchu boo
