ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) are small inexpensive devices that convert VoIP to analog signals for alarms and elevator phones. This is the most common way to provide POTS now.
@@rpsmith You're missing the point here. The Voip to Analog Device is still a device that is connected to a switch somewhere. You lose power to the switch, you lose connection to the phone. The POTs line already provides direct power to the phone. If you are dealing with permits, they are going to want to see POTS line connected to elevators.

It really is crazy how cheap VoIP is compared to the old circuit switched lines. Recently I helped my parents drop their copper land line, it just wasn't worth the $35/month for a basic local-only (LD was like 0.40/min) line with no features (not even caller ID, that would have cost like $15 more per month). I switched them to a cellular plan with a GSM ATA (only $10/month, and they get caller ID for free), in the future I'd like to get them set up with VoIP but I need to figure out some weird issues I've had in the past (like one-way audio, echo, choppiness, and even calls randomly not going through at all). I'll check out the providers you listed in the description, and maybe try forwarding the RTP port range to my ATA (previously I never forwarded anything through my NAT). I may just need a higher quality ATA as well, I'm not sure if my Cisco SPA122 is a good quality ATA or not, or if my issues are all network related.

I've used Callcentric for years and had good luck. They are extremely affordable, but don't provide live phone support - everything is email. They're based in the US too. Generally, if the issues you are having are audio quality (drop-outs, clipping, silence, one-way audio, distortion), then the problem is often in the local network or the Internet Service Provider. So that’s a commonly asked question. I believe the answer is still NO. I researched this quite a bit back about 4-5 years ago. Now, there was a time when google voice actually did have sip credentials you could use to setup a physical phone. But those days are gone. Great question! 😊
Exactly. Most Routers don’t provide POE (power on the network cable to make the phone run), so you most likely will need the power adapter that plugs into a electrical wall outlet. 😊
hey Steve. yep pretty much. used to be a way you could extract the SIP account details out of it and use the service on other devices. I never tried. thanks for commenting!
While this is true, there are ways to prevent that which are not terribly expensive. Yes, I miss the reliability of the copper-based phone line too, but it’s going away. 😶
So i was on Apex yesterday and someone had my friends name and there was a name on the side of the name. It was voIP now im scared because it was so scary
In the world of VoIP the phone # you get is determined by whatever address you state. (Area code and exchange). BUt, in many cases you can easily choose phone numbers outside your true physical location. For example if your physical office was in Dallas, but you wanted to appear to have a location in Houston, you could ask for a phone # with a Houston area code (713, 281, etc.) Unlike traditional phone company lines, VoIP has tremendous flexibility like that. There are so many other things VoIP can do that traditional phone service cannot.
the VoIP phones have software in them already (some proprietary Polycom operating system). The service is usually either a cloud provider. So you wouldn't need any special software. However, if you want to create your own, local VoIP phone system, you can get free software like Asterisk or FreeSwitch. But, unless you are really into that kind of programming, I would go with the cloud providers.
life saving video. I still use copper wire telephone network at home. So, I was tensed at class when teacher told me that telephone line can be connected though switch. LOL, I feel so stupid right now. Didn't knew tech advance that much.
My husband’s gonna start working at home and he has one of those Internet phone that plugs into an ethernet port which I’m assuming yours is plugged into your modem your Wi-Fi modem because we don’t have a wireless router. We have Internet through kinetic, which is Windstream and we have it’s called a Wi-Fi modem. And we have a fiber optic home as well, which not sure if you know what that means it means we have. A ethernet port separately from our phone line which when the guy set up us the ethernet port downstairs so that’s where my husband‘s gonna be working because he doesn’t want to be working upstairs in the bedroom because that’s where our router was so he put an extra one downstairs and he said luckily with our Home and The service we have we can do it
Yes but the reason it cost 40c/min tp call Japan is the illusion that it is costly because Japan is a long way away. But in reality it costs no more in the 21st century to call Japan as it does to call your friend in the next room. ie 0.00001c/min, if that. Meanwhile the voip handset costs hundreds.
This is not the future here in sweden. We have take away copperwire but instead the most people use cellphones. We have good coverage here and it's cheaper to get a regular simcard with low cost and you can talk as much as you wish. You also have a small amount of data, around 3 gb
that's really interesting to hear, Hummer. Thank you for sharing that. May I ask is it mostly 4G? Or, has 5G become more common in Sweden? The USA is very behind with our cellular technology. We are only just beginning to rollout 5G.
@@DIYTelecom We are also rollout 5g this year. But our 3 and 4g can have a very good speed if you choose the right telephone operator. So 5g it's not a big need for me. So that’s a commonly asked question. I believe the answer is still NO. I researched this quite a bit back about 4-5 years ago. Now, there was a time when google voice actually did have sip credentials you could use to setup a physical phone. But those days are gone.
Great question! 😊
Two different flavors 😂😂. Thank you ❤️ very much for the explanation and exhibition
Glad I could help. 😊
What if I connect the IP phone directly to my Router with the LAN cable, could that work?
Exactly. Most Routers don’t provide POE (power on the network cable to make the phone run), so you most likely will need the power adapter that plugs into a electrical wall outlet. 😊
Do i need SIP to use Voip?
I've had magic Jack for about 10 yrs . To me its just basically the same thing isn't it ?
hey Steve. yep pretty much. used to be a way you could extract the SIP account details out of it and use the service on other devices. I never tried.
thanks for commenting!
Hey Steve magic jack doesn't provide did where your customer can call you back
So after the switchover no power = no phone? Great
While this is true, there are ways to prevent that which are not terribly expensive. Yes, I miss the reliability of the copper-based phone line too, but it’s going away. 😶
@@DIYTelecom yeah mate, it’s really sad for me
Thank you for making it simple
So i was on Apex yesterday and someone had my friends name and there was a name on the side of the name. It was voIP now im scared because it was so scary
Nicely explained!
You missed out so much, how do you get a number, do we have to sign up to get VOIP, etc?

Is that a router or a switch?
hi Mackane. that’s a dumb poe switch. one of those yellow patch cords goes to the router.
appreciate your comments here!
how much
How is a phone number determined ?
In the world of VoIP the phone # you get is determined by whatever address you state. (Area code and exchange). BUt, in many cases you can easily choose phone numbers outside your true physical location. For example if your physical office was in Dallas, but you wanted to appear to have a location in Houston, you could ask for a phone # with a Houston area code (713, 281, etc.)
Unlike traditional phone company lines, VoIP has tremendous flexibility like that. There are so many other things VoIP can do that traditional phone service cannot.
How to make it works? What should be the software?
the VoIP phones have software in them already (some proprietary Polycom operating system).
Please, you’re not alone! So many out there still have no clue about VoIP. The fact that you even bothered to research it puts you way ahead. 😄
Thanks Wilbur. Now I’m educated
Great info. Thanks

CAT6 cable?
Hi Eric, for VoIP phones, Category 5e cable is perfectly fine. Cat 6 is fine too. ☺️
LOL! The Academy of Organized Crime?! Is it bad that I'm googling this now?
Excellent video
Wi-Fi Landline phone available in India?
Careful with VoIP in India. There are some specific rules in India about using VoIP to bypass the local phone network. :)

Hi dear, that is great products.
We are also corded phone and VOIP Phone manufacturer.
A ethernet port separately from our phone line which when the guy set up us the ethernet port downstairs so that’s where my husband‘s gonna be working because he doesn’t want to be working upstairs in the bedroom because that’s where our router was so he put an extra one downstairs and he said luckily with our Home and The service we have we can do it
Sounds like you had a good setup. That's great.
Yes but the reason it cost 40c/min tp call Japan is the illusion that it is costly because Japan is a long way away. But in reality it costs no more in the 21st century to call Japan as it does to call your friend in the next room. ie 0.00001c/min, if that. Meanwhile the voip handset costs hundreds.
jimmy mcgill is it you ?

This is not the future here in sweden. We have take away copperwire but instead the most people use cellphones. We have good coverage here and it's cheaper to get a regular simcard with low cost and you can talk as much as you wish. You also have a small amount of data, around 3 gb
I'm working at a big industri an they also installed cellphones. Cellphones that you can hang on a wall
that's really interesting to hear, Hummer.
Highest speed test on my own phone operater is between 70-190 Mbits. If the latency is lower on 5g than It's an great upgrade for me because I'm playing games sometimes
@@DIYTelecom 4g It's very common here
Thank you!
Who's here in 2024?
Great 👏
Thanks!
So helpful thank you!
