  • Here I go over a bunch of stories and discussion surrounding Paul Desmond's tune "Take Five" and how I turned it into an étude for myself on solo accordion because I found it presented some interesting challenges, particularly with the left hand on the Stradella system but also with the right hand on the piano side of the instrument.
Note that this "lesson" video is a bit of a flawed gem, a good learning experience for me as a creator of video music lessons. Despite the flaws I hope maybe you can get something good from it. Please feel free to discuss any questions or raise any concerns in the comments.
0:00: Intro / apology / explanation / disclaimer story time
2:40: Performance of the Take Five accordion étude
3:46: How I decided to study Take Five as an accordion étude
4:40: Segue into philosophy of motor control practice on the Stradella button board
5:53: My motivation in sharing my study
6:27: Appropriateness of this étude for different types and sizes of accordion
8:22: Registrations and the taste behind them, for which there is no accounting
11:17: Preamble to walk-through starting at the beginning of the étude, with articulation / technique / expression discussion
12:04: Intro and A-section bass with deep dive into articulation, bass line arrangement topics, dynamics, and fingering
    20:58: Right-hand melody articulation
22:50: Four articulation types I recall from attending the CNIMA workshop in New Orleans in 2022, along with one way to apply the articulations for technique practice
28:20: B-section bass line and harmony arrangement discussion, leading to abrupt end of the video with probably many topics still untouched.
Here is the chart for the tune I cover in the video: robertkennedymusic.com/wp-con...
Here's CNIMA, the French accordion school I mention in the video: www.cnima.com/#accordeon
Here are the main high-level problems that make me want to have another go at making a video on this Take Five étude:
    1. I tried to put too much into one video. I should have made separate videos about the different aspects I tried to cover.
    2. I didn't play the demonstration performance well enough to serve as a good demonstration of the articulation I want. So I plan to do a companion video in the future where I critique the performance in this one and demonstrate a better performance.
    3. As a basically unfinished work, this video lacks a conclusion section at the end. No summary, no wrap-up. It just ends abruptly.
