Modifying Accordion Bass Registrations

  • In this video I walk through all the steps to modify one of the bass registrations in my new Serenellini custom-built accordion that I purchased from St. Louis Accordions. The change consists of replacing two of the five sheet-metal slides that determine how the registrations are configured.
    Along the way the viewer gets a nice look at the bass-side reeds and the general construction of the reed blocks and bass register switching mechanism.

    Very impressive video. Nice work. You are an adventurous man! There is no way I would even attempt doing that to one of my accordions.

      Thanks! I don't have a ton of accordion experience but I've never hesitated much to tear into things, so I have quite a bit of other experience with everything from rebuilding and modifying racing motorcycle engines to tuning pianos to designing and building electronics. So I'm kind of cheating because accordions are pretty simple and I've gotten some good coaching on accordion-specific pitfalls (of which there are a few, indeed).

    31:34 It's interesting to hear how both Keyboards (Treble Keyboard on Bassoon, Bass Keyboard on Medium Tenor) blend & compliment each other due to them sounding somewhat similar, so it's perfect for Band playing.

    This reminds me of the Tenor Guitar that Mrs Oglesby is letting me strum away on, I've just gave it some fresh John Pearse 450 Tenor Guitar Strings. I'm adding a Recording King Gold Foil Pickup (as well as a John Pearse Banjo capo so I can change Keys on the fly) so that I can hook it up to an amplifier. The main thing I envisioned doing with the Tenor Guitar is playing in a Group with other instruments.

    4:49 Ok so here's what the Bass Reed Blocks of an Accordion look like, you'll notice that there's 12 notes per rank. Alot of Accordions made today (like this one) have an L Shaped Reed Block for the 2 lowest ranks of Reeds and it allows companies to make the instrument more compact and it mellows out the Accordion's sound to prevent it from sounding too thin.

    That Registration you were modifying says Alto, Contralto, & Tenor so it's what I call a Medium Tenor switch. Turns out they probably made an error when they made this 414 Accordion.

      Good eye! Yes, the accordion was accidentally shipped to me with the tenor and bass reed slides cut incorrectly for this registration. The switch is marked correctly with the registration I requested, but the slides opened the bass reeds with that switch instead of the tenor reeds. The factory kindly sent me the slides I needed to fix the situation and I installed them myself, which was a lot less trouble than sending the instrument away.
      Most likely the mistake happened at least in part because the accordion was assembled during what must have been a hectic time: Spring of 2020 during which Italy was dealing with lockdowns, shutdowns, and a very difficult pandemic situation generally. I'm guessing it was hard to get anything done there at that time.

      @@robertkennedymusic Good thing it's finally fixed. The Master Switches are my favorite cause it produces the instrument's signature sound.

      @@RockStarOscarStern634 The master sounds fantastic on this accordion, but I wouldn't say I have a favorite registration; each one is right for some musical circumstances. For much of the music I play, master is too heavy and brash.

      I'm grateful for your contributions in comments here, but in the last few minutes you added a lot of comments that are not specifically about this video, and are either completely obvious to anyone who knows accordion, or are controversial, unsupported claims. In the interest of comment hygiene I'm going to delete the ones in those categories, and I hope you understand I mean no offense.

      Was anyone else expected to find that the company made a mechanical error w/ the Cassotto 414?

    • @robertkennedymusic
      @robertkennedymusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RockStarOscarStern634 This registration was a custom request that I made. If you order a Professional Cassotto 414 from Serenellini with no special requests, it gets built with their standard set of bass registrations which don't include this one. So I would be surprised if anyone else has received an instrument from them with this build error in it.

      @@robertkennedymusic It's very similar to the Soft Tenor Switch (Tenor & Alto) on a Standard Accordion but it also has the Contralto Reeds added to it, so I could think of it as being a "Medium Tenor".
