Thanks for watching! Please consider subscribing to my new channel here: www.youtube.com/@jamminpcs. I'm trying to move the easier hardware stuff there so that I can focus on the more in depth troubleshooting and diagnostic videos here :)
Thank you! I worked on this for over an hour and watched six different videos. If you had not said something about the voltage and amps, I never would have looked. Then I noticed I was using a dell charger on an HP laptop. And the voltage and amperage were slightly different. I rummaged in a box and found the HP charger and it works!
Correction: the amperage on your charger should be higher than what your laptop draws, voltage is the requirement and the current will be modulated (not drawn to the max of the charger). Using a charger with max amperage capacity of less than your laptop requires may damage the charger.
Thank you very much for this video. I am learning a lot here, how to use a multimeter and test laptop charger and the power jack. God bless you for sharing this information.
Great vid, informative and easy to follow. Do you have any videos on taking the top off ? I have an hp laptop that has the exact issue with a bad port. Did all the other tests up to that, and 100% positive it's a bad port.
Really am very greatfull for this video i learned very perfect from you .. Thanks for your video... Its helps to whom learn BASIC electronics... Tank you so much brother
Thank God you are back!!! Your vids are the BEST. I had 3 of them saved, finally had a block of time to work on the lappies, undisturbed and POOF! Vids were gone. I couldn't remember your full user name - just the Monkey - and man, I searched all over, used different spellings, plurals, keywords and... nothing. So I was getting preped to wade thru others & settle for 2nd best, did a search, & et voila! Back in business. Thanks for being concise without using Moron Speak.
Thanks for the nice thoughts :) Ya, an error erased all our videos :( Fortunately, we had most of them saved and are uploading them again and putting up more. Thanks for missing us :):):)
Very good. Very informative. Ironically the laptop your performing on is the EXACT one i have. I followed your steps... power adapter good/ getting power from MB/. Maybe I’ll go to the other video -bios reset? Not sure. Voltage is spot on with your readings too... this was the first time i used this laptop in 3 years. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciate. Keep up the good work. Thx bud!
PC Monkey yeah sir! Correct. I have an older Hp 15 - F9H96UA. But... upon further investigation AND more importantly looking through all your vids... i noticed the power supply(button) on the back has a wire strip break off (solder)... sucks cuz i dont have another replacement part or strip. After putting in Bio battery (from ur video). You said something at the end which i hope everyone takes heed.... you said, “ make sure all your connections are good”... great advice bro! And this is after 3 times i fully disassembled the dam thing. I’ll keep you posted. Any comments, ?’s, or complaints are highly welcomed. Thx bud!
Thank you so much for this tutorial :). I also i tested the pins on the power jack and all of the wires are transmitting the correct voltage except for one wire, which isnt transmitting any power at all. should i replace it? Also I have a dell inspiron 5491
I followed instructions on video (very helpful) have completed processes for eliminating static, have done driver and BIOS updates and still me Dell 5559 inspiron will not recognize the charger and the battery won't charge. Unfortunately I have drained all my batteries so I can't continue to do other diagnostics. Is it possible that I need to replace the mother board? Concerned about buying a new one if there are other causes for this problem. Any guidance is greatly, greatly appreciated!
Elaboration and question -> I think the power jack or power supply has a problem on the hand me down laptop I just received that didn't turn back on (battery is a goner, so I'm depending on direct wall connection). Already separated from the motherboard, a multimeter applied to the -power jack connector- while the P.Supply is plugged into the wall will show 19.5V, but moving the cord/jack around where it's plugged in on the PowerSupply side causes huge fluctuations. Stop moving cord, stabilizes IF in certain positions. I tried attaching jack port back into motherboard so I could see if the motherboard side is receiving the 19.5V (when stable), but my motherboard does not have an end like yours to apply power/ground probes to - it is mounted vertically, rather than horizontally to the motherboard (your example being horizontally mounted/attached), and the other end of the motherboard at that location HAS 4 soldering points representing the 4 (2 black, 2 red) positions of the jack port on the other side. When I try to place my probes on these soldering points, I get an extremely low voltage reading that doesn't change. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to see full voltage at these soldering points or not. What do you think? (I ordered a new jack port and power supply plug on Amazon thinking I could just return them if it doesn't correct things)
To clarify something else too - the power supply jack doesn't fluctuate on its own (while not connected to removed jack port) but it's very hard for the red probe to find a spot where it gets voltage.. hence why I decided to remove the jack port and test them together).. because it seemed really difficult to get the voltage, and there is a missing chunk of plastic on the jack end, but I still wasn't sure if it was bad or not.
Cool videos, thank you! I have two type c charger ports in my chromebook and ligths didn't work on both, i assume it's not likely both of them broke down?
No, not likely. 1. For a computer that does not turn on, try this video first; th-cam.com/video/HHwzA37r4e8/w-d-xo.html. Let me know how that goes :) 2. Also, did anything happen before this issue appeared? Liquid spill, overheating, Windows update, etc?
Assuming you've checked the charger and everything else. Using your voltage meter what should the reading be in the battery port. I think i have the same model in your video and I have 8 prongs on the back of the laptop. 2 Neg (bigger) 6 Pos(?). I get readings from all 6 Pos except one no matter which Neg prong I touch to.
I’ve binged watched a bunch of your videos I love how clearly they explain everything. I’m only stuck on one issue. My charging port doesn’t look like it can disconnect it looks like it’s soldered to the motherboard. How do I check with the multimeter if it is receiving power? I used the tutorial to check the charger and the charger is good!
The powerjack should submit power to the motherboard through one main pin. Towards the middle of the rear of the port. That is where the charge should be read. You can put the black connector on the outside of the metal. That would be ground. Does that make sense?
@@tigara1219 Try both but the Red should go onto the metal component you believe to be the power or the live power transfer pin. The Black should just go on a ground. Does that make sense?
PC Monkey wow you are excellent at explaining things I am a total noob and I understood that 🤣 Cable has power. Charging port has power. Still won’t turn on 🤦🏽♀️ What the actual heck
@@tigara1219 And you have already tried the first video testing the Battery, Charger, and trying a Static Discharge? And you tried the second video trying a BIOS Reset? If the Charger and Jack check out here then your left with needing a Motherboard replacement at this point :( That could be fun :) And depending on your computer, it may be cheaper than you may think. Need help locating a Motherboard?
Your videos are awesome, thanks. Very clear and extremely helpful. I've got no charging on an Asus R556LA. My cord works (putting out 19v), and I've replaced the battery, which will turn the unit on, but it's still not charging. I'm suspecting the power jack, so I've ordered a new one - any tips/instructions on how to replace? Is it soldered into the board, or will just snap in? Any help much appreciated. Thanks.
It depends on the computer. I dont have one of those in my shop and cant find a motherboard access video online :( So it would depend on what you see when you open it up. Most computers however, will have it soldered on
@@PC_Monkey I did watch a different view that did explain this process . But still not getting anything after doing some cleaning around and just make sure all my ports are good everything from the adapter to the power jack to even the connector on the motherboard it is receiving power but the power jack is not lighting up with the charging emblem and the power button on the motherboard in is not responding to when I push it Even with the battery in it or attached
I think a surge of power from one of the batteries or from not draining other components when replacing a screen on a Dell Inspiron 1500 fried something and now it won't turn on at all. Went through both this video and previously went through the "drain the power for 60 seconds and test battery and power adapter video" and also the unplugging the BIOS battery for awhile, and I can confirm correct power is getting TO the motherboard, but that's as far as I can get. If power gets to the motherboard, what's the next thing to check? (Do I have to test anything regarding pushing the power button on to know where the power goes next?
Great video!! I have a question. My laptop discharge very quickly when i unplug the jack. In this case the problem is the jack or the battery? Thank you! You're amazing!
Any videos on testing power at the mother board or if all is good to this point just need to replace the motherboard ? I've seen something about replacing an IC or PD1 in the adapter section of the motherboard but have no idea how to test or where to get such... This is Dell inspiron i7 5770, where battery is not charging sadly 😢
Yes, you can test into a motherboard and hopefully find the component that is faulty. That would then be replaced. But no, I dont have any videos on that level repair. If my motherboards need to be repaired to that extent, I find it faster and easier to replace the board. Sry :(
Just watched the Video's very good. Not being a Technician, if I buy the Connector part which is not expensive, can install myself. Does it entail just unplugged the old and in plugging the new. HP Diagnostics said the connector / adaptor passed the test???. Its either that part or I'm stumped its still reading 4%. Now I know where the hidden screws are to remove the cover I will suck all the dust out and pull out the connector device and then plug back in???
Yes, usually the power jack is not a very expensive part. If your power jack is on its own board, it would be a simple matter of removing the board and replacing it. However, many power jacks are now a part of the motherboard and not on their own board. In that case, it would be a matter of replacing the motherboard or un-soldering the power jack and soldering on a new one. I dont understand the last question.
Great videos , I'm at this point , I know my battery needs replacing , but prior to it just being a Solid on Orange light on a old Asus X502C , it goes out when I press the power key. Did the Bios reset and put a new CMOS battery in too , tested the charger 19.47 v , all ok , battery ,one of those horrid built in ones , but it stil gave me 1 hour charge which I'd have gone ahead and ordered be it not firstly finding your tuition vidd ,because I've always gone from a article that it does ,esp gaming Laptops ,them good to work off DC alone , so now I'm at a point where I've yet to do a voltage test to the Laptops power port ,and take the mobo out again ,if it's not that it's gotta be comment failure , my issues all started when I was testing a monitor ,as soon as I plugged the HDMI port from the UN powered monitor to the Asus socket it never came back on again, it did for sometime Blink orange but then it's constant orange , so you talking about ,"Static ,that's got me thinking "! The monitor could have been unstable and mmmmm, just thought , if that's blown , and it's wrongly fused prior then it could have Cost me the use of a laptop worth a few quid , but you feel after a while confident and never let you down , gotta say too,Asus , Lenovo,HP, etc , all have this horrible built on board RAM,internal batteries , it's like the days of repair to them ,they don't want them to be repaired now ! very helpful. my dell laptop e6530 charging jack has 2 red wires, 2 black wires and a blue. one set of black and red gives me correct voltage, but the other sets are off. are any combination of red and black supposed to give me the 19 volts?? thanks.
Hi first let me congratulate you, for your fantastic videos, thanks to them, i already make some advances in my pc diagnostic. I have an hp Envy 17-s143cl laptop. This laptop do not start, whith the battery or with the power charger cable. When i connect the power charger cable, the little light at the power jack connector side, do not bright. And when i press the power buttom, no light, no fan, no sound neither. Now if i already checked that the the charger, the power jack and the power jack port have 19.4 volts, what need to be my next step? Is the mother board failing? Please, do you have another video, that i can follow? Thank you, very much for your help!
Hi, I have similar problem and came across your video, it was really helpful. But i have a doubt, hope you can help me. From last few months my laptop don't turn on if i leave all night plugged in or also if i forgot to pull out the charger after shutting down.. next time it wont turn on.. this keeps happening i assumed its static and followed your previous to remove static build up.. but this time it didn't work out .. so i bought a multimeter, new power jack and a new button switch .. thinking these could b the problem first i checked the power supply in charger and power jack with multimeter both gave me 19.5V ..perfectly fine But when i about to check the power passes to the motherboard, i thought to match black with black and red with red.. but it gave a spark.. when u say put red on metal bracket..what does it mean ? and I haven't separated the motherboard it is still in place. do u recommend to remove separately and check it ? .. and can u tell me at what plave should i place multimeter red port .. and what is metal bracket ??
You dont have to remove the motherboard if you can easily access the power jack without needing to do so. Every power jack is different. They are not all the same so I cant tell you exactly how to test it. What is the model number of your laptop?
Thank You very much for so much of your efforts, even though I'm unable to complete all the steps and my laptop is still dead, but ur efforts are really needed to be appreciated❤
1. Are there any signs of life at all when you try to turn it on? Lights? Fan, Motherboard, or Hard Drive sounds? Anything seen on the screen? 2. For a computer that does not turn on, try this video first; th-cam.com/video/kOBY4k2Mn_k/w-d-xo.html. Have you tried all the steps seen there?
Hey im runnin into an issue with my acer aspire 5. The battery is not chargin, i took it out, it opens with the ac in but when the cpu goes on higher % it just shuts down. Idk if it can be the ac or the power plug. The ac has 19v output 🤷♂️ could the plug be the reason. Before all these my baterry kept disconecting the ac from chargin till it did not charge it at all now.
Your videos are awesome, thanks for the great content of your channel. About this video, I have an issue that's driving me crazy and I would really apreciate if you help me on giving me some directions. It's a Dell Inspiron 15R SE 7520. The charger wasn't charging the battery and the laptop won't turn on with the charger plugged in w/o battery. It was working only with battery and no charger. I did the 1 minute power on w/o battery nor charger to drain the static electricity after watching one of your videos (thank you again for the great content) and the problem was solved. I had the laptop being charged and working with the charger plugged in with or w/o battery, all perfect. But today, 2 days after fully working, it's happening again. And worse: the 1 minute static dischage procecure doesn't help anymore. I've checked the charger with multimeter and it's ok. I even tried another charger (same specs), no success at all. Right now the laptop works (perfectly) with the battery but the charger does not affect it at all. After watching this video, I've tested the power jack and there's something confusing me: the charger's output is 19.5V / 4.62A and those 19.5V are shown in my multimeter display when I test the charger plug. But when I connect the charger to the power jack, as you show in your video, the multimeter shows only 18.5V maximum. Could this be the problem? Sorry if I bother you with this, but I'm about to get crazy. Thanks in advance!
@@PC_Monkey Thanks for the answer. No, the charger does not charge the battery even with the laptop off, I've just tested it (30 minutes off with charger plugged in). Also, when I enter the diagnostics mode (pressing F12 and selecting it), it says "Warning: Charger is not detected...". I've also disassembled it, cleaned the boards, changed thermal paste, etc., the problem persists.
@@Zimerer Its saying the charger is not connected to Id like to assume its the charger. Is the charger generic or brand name Dell? If generic, replace with a brand name. Dell is really annoying about that. If its a brand name already and you tested to make sure its working, I am starting to think perhaps motherboard issues at that point :(

same issue with my laptop, but if I try to push and bend my charger near the pin then my laptop turns on and everything was well. But then when there was sudden power outage and I restart my PC then I need to bend and find the right bend again before it works. It's tiring.
Hello, great video! Ive test my charger, the power jack and the port and they all read 19 volts. Laptop doesn't charge and doesnot turn on when the battery is removed and computer is plugged in. What could be my next step?
@@PC_Monkey Just watched ot and followed all the steps removing and placing back in ram etc. In a wierd accident, while plugged in to the wall and computer, the charger cable melted on a stove burner and i could see that the raw wire of the different cables were touching. I have a new charger now with the same power ratings. After that accident the battery stopped charging but the computer ran just fine untill i ran out of charge.
Hi Thank yu so much for the explanations. I did all the steps. Adapter OK. Charging Jack OK. Charging port does not transmit the incoming DC20V on to the motherboard. What can I do next? Please help.
You said the charging port does not transmit the power to the motherboard? If so, you found your issue. You can install a new port or swap out the motherboard if thats not possible
@@PC_Monkey well thanks but how to install a new port. It seems the port is soldered on to the board. Am working on Lenovo Ideapad 110-15ISK Model 80UD
Did you get a voltage reading when you tested the white wires with + red wire? My laptop power jack has a single white wire which does not register voltage with + wire. The black and red wires are fine showing 19V. My laptop will not turn on with good AC power adapter (tests at 19V).
The white usually will not show a charge. The red should. For a computer that will not turn on, have you tried the steps seen here? th-cam.com/video/P3I7dDpkJps/w-d-xo.html.
@@PC_Monkey Thanks so much for replying! Yes, the red is + and black is -. When, with power connected, I touch both with the meter leads, I get 19V. When I touch the red and the white I get no voltage. I assumed white functioned as ground and meter should register voltage with the red wire. But it doesn't. My laptop does turn on and functions properly on battery. It does not turn on with battery disconnected and AC power adapter plugged in. When the computer is on, the power adapter will not charge the battery. The power adapter is good--supplies 19V. The weird part is sometimes the battery will charge up but only if the laptop is completely turned off! I did try resetting the bios by removing the CMOS battery as you suggested in the other video, but no luck. Something funky is going on and I really like my EVGA SC17 laptop!
after i intalled windows 10 in my lenovo color orange ultra book... it finished.. i updated it. and so on so fort.. then when i was trying to turn on it again... it wont turn on... it just blinks.. the keyboard and the led light.. just blinks.. on and off.. about 3 sec.. what must be the problem.. i was so happy when i finished it then suddenly awts

@@AbdullahRahhal If all the tests in this video do not reveal the issue, and your power adapter tested to be fine, then your most likely looking at a Motherboard replacement
I have disassembled a MIIX 510 which doesn't turn on or charge. The power button will spin the fan for 1 second only. The charger gives correct 20V, tested with a DMM. However when I plug in the charger, I always see a super tiny blue spark - this can't possibly be normal can it? You wouldn't notice it briefly sparks unless you had it disassembled, as I have. It also sometimes sounds like coil whine on the board. Would appreciate quick thoughts, thank you.
For a computer that does not turn on, try this video first; th-cam.com/video/P3I7dDpkJps/w-d-xo.html. Let me know how that goes :) If your seeing a spark, that could indicate a damaged power jack / motherboard :(
@@PC_Monkey thanks so much for your reply, but having watched your linked video, I have previously tried all suggestions within. I also previously tried my Multi meter on the charger which reads solid 20.33v (rated 20v) so I assumed that was fine, but I saw a video by Sorin last night which says the charger may read correct volts but may still have an un-testable current issue.
Very helpful. Good tip matching the power supply symbol with the multi meter. When I plug my laptop it starts up for a few seconds and stops. Occasionally I see the BIOS screen for a second before shutting down. I've tested my power supply and the connector on the mobo, it's soldered to the board. I've also removed all components, HDD, CPU, RAM, WiFi. I've left the display connected & keyboard. I removed the BIOS battery overnight. Also checked for a loose screw that may be causing a short. Thank you for the video. My laptop fell on its side while plugged into the charger, which caused the charging port to sink into the laptop, I tried pulling it out with a metal clip and it sparked, yet still turned on, cause the battery had some charge in it. After battery totally died and wouldn't charge I opened it up and tried to replace the charging cable connected to the motherboard, and that also sparked when the screw driver I was using touched the top of it. I don't have the tool to test if there's power like you're doing, but do you think the motherboard is gone now after 2 sparks? The new charging cable isn't supplying any power either. Thanks.

This might be a shot in the dark considering how old this video is, but I need help. If it helps, my pc is a HP 15 bw. I replaced my powerjack which I thought was the issue behind my laptop not receiving energy while comnected (even though the charging light turned on), but then my battery wouldn't charge with that either, and worse, it ran out completely after doing a battery report. At that point I thought it was either the battery or the motherboard-powerjack connector, the latter being the most suspicious to me since my laptop can't be powered on with just the charger, but I first bought a new, generic battery anyway. Turns out that battery couldn't even turn ON my pc. I then tried with the old battery again while it was turned off and it apparently was charging, with the orange "charging" light and all. I left it like that like for 5-6 hours, then I tried to turn it on, which it did for a couple seconds, because the battery didn't charge at all. I couldn't even get past the manufacturer logo. Now, when I tried to connect it to the power again, the charging light wouldn't even turn on, new or old battery. That's when I tried checking with the multimeter. Problem is, everything was reading fine; from the charger, the powerjack, even my most suspicious component the motherboard-powerjack connector. I'm at a point of not knowing what could it be, I've tried turning it on with no RAM, HDD, etc. and nothing.
Hi, so a/c adapter tested fine, down to dc jack, where again, I don't know what i'm doing. Mine has 9 wires, from closest to farthest from jack: a single white, then 4 blacks and 4 reds. Does is matter which black and which red I test. Laptop is a DELL G3 17 3779. In any case, I somehow managed to get a 19.xx v reading, so this is not turning out as I'd hope. Tested with original battery and then with brand new battery, a/c adapter tested out ok, as well as dc jack.

I tested the charger, power jack, and power jack port on the motherboard for the correct voltage with a multimeter and they are all receiving 19 volts. What's the next troubleshooting step? Thanks
Most likely something was left unplugged or even perhaps damaged if it was working normally before. :( You have completed all the steps seen here? th-cam.com/video/P3I7dDpkJps/w-d-xo.html.
@@PC_Monkey 🖥️🖱️🐒Thanks for your reply bro... I discovered what it was, I fixed it. When I changed the thermal paste I didn't apply enough, I went back and reapplied the thermal paste, and it worked right away 😁 YOUR VIDEOS ARE VERY HELPFUL, KEEP IT UP 👍
How to replace motherboard on Hp 15 notebook. My LCD screen turns on 2 out of 10 tries, Tried new ram, cmos, still no display when hooked up to monitor with HDMI cord.
I have dell inspiron N4050 model. I had problem on dc jack there one cable was disconnected. Now I soldering that one but the problem is when I plugged in the charger pin, laptop power indicator showing green and red light beeping. Now what should i do? Whats the problem? Can you tell me please?
What if for example I drain my laptop last night then it came to the point that it actually shut down then later that night or in the noon came to charge it again then that time it didn't charge I didn't see the orange light on the side turning on or the reference that the laptop is charging but my charger is not bad at all what can you suggest me to do bro...
my charger is testing 19.5ish like specified but my port is showing 4-6 does that mean the port is bad? there are 6 positive and six negative wires on the port harness
I plugged in a wrong charger with 20 Volts over the charger I was supposed to use. Laptop was still working but then wouldn't charge anymore. Would those symptoms be a sign of a bad battery, ports or motherboard, or too difficult to tell without doing these tests? Any help would be much apprecaited
Its possible the battery is damaged. Your computer is turning on and working fine otherwise? If so, can you try the steps seen here? th-cam.com/video/arZpfqcVoUs/w-d-xo.html
In the end I took it to a repair shop, I believe a couple capicitators had blown on the motherboard, so those were changed out and it's working again. Your videos came in handy though self diagnosing so atleast I had some idea of what the problem was. Thank you so much again
I have checked everything with your video's.. even power jack is working.. still my laptop is not turning on.. what to do.? Is there any power ic or anything? That i should check
If none of the tests in this video worked; th-cam.com/video/P3I7dDpkJps/w-d-xo.html then your left with the issue most likely being your motherboard. It would need to be replaced.
If its changing like that it means the port may be damaged. You may see lower performance, and your battery may not be charging correctly. At worst, your computer may detect that issue, and to protect itself from damage from a faulty jack, it may not start.
@@PC_Monkey thank you, that could be an issue, my batteries haven't lasted that long, gone through two. Another issue I found is that one end of the CMOS battery holder detached from the motherboard. If this happened suddenly could that have caused the computer to shut down and not power back on?
@@SandShark350 Yes. CMOS batteries powers the base system, BIOS. If that system cant boot up, then the computer wont start. A BIOS reset ( removing and then plugging back in the CMOS Battery ) is step #2 in troubleshooting a computer that wont turn on.

@PC_monkey do I need to remove the motherboard to test the port on the motherboard
Thank you! I worked on this for over an hour and watched six different videos. If you had not said something about the voltage and amps, I never would have looked. Then I noticed I was using a dell charger on an HP laptop. And the voltage and amperage were slightly different. I rummaged in a box and found the HP charger and it works!
Glad your all set :) Always here if needed !!
Correction: the amperage on your charger should be higher than what your laptop draws, voltage is the requirement and the current will be modulated (not drawn to the max of the charger). Using a charger with max amperage capacity of less than your laptop requires may damage the charger.

Very Helpful.. thanks
Great to hear !! Always here to help :):)
This will be more informative if you show the ideal voltages at all 4-5 pins of power jack... Thank you
They are all uniquely different to the charger

Cool videos, thank you! I have two type c charger ports in my chromebook and ligths didn't work on both, i assume it's not likely both of them broke down?
No, not likely.
1. For a computer that does not turn on, try this video first; th-cam.com/video/HHwzA37r4e8/w-d-xo.html. Let me know how that goes :)
This helps a lot. I have purchased a couple new batteries and recently a new power cord and still no luck keeping my Omen charged. I'll try this next.
Hope it helps :)
PC Monkey yes it does I see the pin. The black one on the pin and the red one anywhere? Or just the black?
@@tigara1219 Try both but the Red should go onto the metal component you believe to be the power or the live power transfer pin. The Black should just go on a ground. Does that make sense?
PC Monkey wow you are excellent at explaining things I am a total noob and I understood that 🤣 Cable has power. Charging port has power. Still won’t turn on 🤦🏽♀️ What the actual heck

Your videos are awesome, thanks. Very clear and extremely helpful. I've got no charging on an Asus R556LA.
Most computers however, will have it soldered on
I followed all these tips. Everything works only thing that doesn't work is the power jack does not light up but I am getting power

Great job!

What are the main cause of the power jack and port not working ?
that is a really nice video👍
Sometimes components just break. Physical damage from falls, hits, etc. But sometimes incorrect power can hurt these components as well.

Great video!! I have a question.
My laptop discharge very quickly when i unplug the jack.
In this case the problem is the jack or the battery?
Thank you! You're amazing!
The battery drains very quickly when the power adapter is unplugged? How fast from 100% would you say until its dead?
@@PC_Monkey yes.
When I unplug the Jack after 3/4h the battery is almost 0
Hi, I have similar problem and came across your video, it was really helpful. But i have a doubt, hope you can help me.
From last few months my laptop don't turn on if i leave all night plugged in or also if i forgot to pull out the charger after shutting down.. next time it wont turn on..
this keeps happening i assumed its static and followed your previous to remove static build up..
but this time it didn't work out .. so i bought a multimeter, new power jack and a new button switch .. thinking these could b the problem
first i checked the power supply in charger and power jack with multimeter both gave me 19.5V ..perfectly fine
But when i about to check the power passes to the motherboard, i thought to match black with black and red with red.. but it gave a spark.. when u say put red on metal bracket..what does it mean ? and I haven't separated the motherboard it is still in place. do u recommend to remove separately and check it ? .. and can u tell me at what plave should i place multimeter red port .. and what is metal bracket ??
You dont have to remove the motherboard if you can easily access the power jack without needing to do so. Every power jack is different. They are not all the same so I cant tell you exactly how to test it. What is the model number of your laptop?

It could be the issue. Hard to say. Does the battery charge when the computer is off and just wont charge when its on?
@@PC_Monkey Thanks for the answer. No, the charger does not charge the battery even with the laptop off, I've just tested it (30 minutes off with charger plugged in). Also, when I enter the diagnostics mode (pressing F12 and selecting it), it says "Warning: Charger is not detected...". I've also disassembled it, cleaned the boards, changed thermal paste, etc., the problem persists.
@@Zimerer Its saying the charger is not connected to Id like to assume its the charger. Is the charger generic or brand name Dell? If generic, replace with a brand name.

If your seeing a spark, that could indicate a damaged power jack / motherboard :(
@@PC_Monkey thanks so much for your reply, but having watched your linked video, I have previously tried all suggestions within.
Any suggestion?

I would like to ask if the bad charging port had its led displaying white while you're testing it or does the led on the charging port only show when it's connected to the motherboard?
The power jack LED should light up when the power adapter is plugged into it. No it should not display when being tested as far as I know

Question I have a mini desktop that when I plug in the ac adapter the power light on the ac brick turns off. Motherboard power port has 4 leads and then five pins that go to the motherboard . All pins register continuity is that normal?
You said desktop but also said ac adapter. Do you have a desktop computer or a laptop? Most desktops dont use an ac adapter.
The line on the meter that you are talking about means direct voltage

Thank you for the video.
My laptop fell on its side while plugged into the charger, which caused the charging port to sink into the laptop, I tried pulling it out with a metal clip and it sparked, yet still turned on, cause the battery had some charge in it. After battery totally died and wouldn't charge I opened it up and tried to replace the charging cable connected to the motherboard, and that also sparked when the screw driver I was using touched the top of it. I don't have the tool to test if there's power like you're doing, but do you think the motherboard is gone now after 2 sparks? The new charging cable isn't supplying any power either.
Thanks.
Unfortunately, yes after two sparks the motherboard may be damaged. However, to be sure you can start troubleshooting a laptop that wont turn on as seen here;
th-cam.com/video/_MOe71kBPOY/w-d-xo.html. After that, if those steps dont work, move on to the BIOS Reset as seen here; th-cam.com/video/VO5BhbiItCM/w-d-xo.html
@@PC_Monkey thank you very very much for the prompt reply.
I tried the CMOS battery reset, and the static discharge displayed in the video you just linked with no luck.
Also, I don't have a multimeter, but I have an electricity tester, this one:
www.neobits.com/greenlee_emerson_dvc_6_grt_continuity_voltage_p13326331.html?atc=gbp&gclid=CjwKCAjw5Ij2BRBdEiwA0Frc9eyY2f7QJ4VsHasc_iQ2qyGex46DxzRc_lI4G471-6wl7ZUqdN6lPRoCsGIQAvD_BwE
It doesn't test for as low as 20V, but it did produce a sound, so there's a current, just not sure if it's the right voltage. Tested charger, charging cable, and charging module on the motherboard. So there's current, but it still won't turn on nor charge the battery. Any ideas are really appreciated! Thanks again!

If none of the tests in this video worked; th-cam.com/video/P3I7dDpkJps/w-d-xo.html then your left with the issue most likely being your motherboard. It would need to be replaced.
What does it mean of the voltage from the power jack port is fluctuating between ~18.4 - 19.4?
