  • Changing 205/50/16 tires at home with the following tools:
Harbor Freight (Pittsburgh Automotive) Tire Changer - Model #69686
Harbor Freight (Pittsburgh Automotive) Balancer - Model #39741
Mojolever - Tire Tool -www.mojotiretools.com/mojoweb.htm (Note: He doesn't recommend for car/truck tires, but I think it works great for this purpose)
All of these tools work great for changing tires at home.

Brought back memories of working in a garage in the 50's. Wish I'd had one of these! All we had was a bead breaker, two tire irons and a rubber sledge. Never thought of using soap, just elbow grease! Had forearms like Popeye! With garages now charging $25 and north to change a tire, Ima gonna get me one of these and see if I can get those forearms back!

Great vid! Good idea putting the bag over the tire holder and the center holder to prevent scratching on special wheels.

I've been to BIG 10 Tires, Firestone, and Goodyear stores with the wire wheels for my Jag. After cringing before stopping each of them, I took my wheels back home and did them myself. I see there are some tire "experts" here that are quick to criticize and maybe they do know something more than the vast majority of experts out there (and on here), but there is something to the adage, "if you want it done right, do it yourself." And even if you mess it up yourself, at least some other tire expert goofball didn't ruin your rim.

I completely agree with that statement. A true professional is hard to find. Do it yourself. I had my rim fix Bec my tire kept going flat. I got my rim fix but my tire is still flat and my rim is still bent.

Thanks for sharing the video. Lots of experts out there hating but pay them no mind. This will get it done in a pinch. I'm going to get one of these for my shop at home just to break down steel rims so I can blast them and repaint them. Maybe then when I buy my tires the tire store can mount and balance. There is nothing wrong with trying to do it yourself and try to save some money or just to have the knowledge to get you on the road til you can do better.

Good stuff, thanks. I know this rim is aluminum so no problem but on my motorcycles I was getting rust in my rims. I asked a local shop owner and he told me to try lemon pledge for rim lube. I highly recommend it, it's much slicker than soap and water and leaves nothing behind. Be ready though cuz it's only good for a few seconds then it's gone. Thanks again.

That's cool. One of these years I probably wont be able to do them with a duckbill and tire bars anymore so its good to know I have options. Sadly though, I've been doing them with tire bars and a duckbill for so many years its hard to break the habit. I don't even take rims off unless its an inner dual. Definitely less physical.

    Hi, thanks for explaining.
My question is, the balance thing you said almost perfect, so you have to put some a little weight to be perfect, like in the machine comes out, 0.0.0 so that means the Balance is Good!!
and like I said, you have to put those weight to be perfect? and thanks again!

Hello from Canada...I suggest you cut a large plastic washer with a hole for the screwed post, to insert under the star retainer.
Some wheel dont sit perfectly on the table so make two of them. This way, you wont need the T shirt.
Or better... have a plastic cone to fit in the wheel center hole to be held with the screwed post pressure. Thanks for the good video...

just for future reference, something i learned doing tires, if the wheel has a tpms tire pressure monitor system, you cant just dump all of the air out of the tire, it ruins the barometric sensor in the monitor. you have to crack the schrader valve open and let it drain slowly, or buy special bleeders that bleed air slow.

Personally, I would use Vinyl Gloves, spray silicone for lubing tire bead, instead of soap, then after the tire is on, use black Silicone gasket sealer on rim bead, to prevent future leaks and seal completely. This also stops any corrosion and allows the tire to come off easily next time.

Put your soap in a spray bottle.
Use some steel wool to clean the mating surfaces on the wheel rim.

Easy with a newer tire and rim. Old, long mounted tire not so easy. The bead breaker bent on mine. I welded some support. Some tires, my 220 pound body is not enough weight on the breaking bar. I put the tire under the jack, and top of the jack under my trailer hitch. That breaks a tough bead.

    @mwv8408 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Well this video is getting pretty old but the information is still just as current. What I'll try and do is to add some VERY helpful information about those types of balancers.
First I found that none of them are weight calibrated, and that's not meaning the bubble, I'm talking about the weight, that is to say they really don't hang level!!
Here is what I finely did to mine.
I took a flat piece of metal plate and put it on the most level surface I could find which was my workbench. I then used my known to be good 4 foot level and I finished leveling the plate, I used a couple of washers under the plate's edges to make it PERFECT!. Now your ready to start with the balancer head. Find something that you can put under the balancer head so that's it setting on its lower ring, not the guild pin ends. Place the shim or shims on the leveled plate in the center and look at the balancer's bubble, does it indicate Level? if not then adjust it until it does. Next rotate the balancer head 90 degrees but in the same area of the plate, check the bubble, adjust if needed, make a couple more 90 degree turns and checking the bubble. Once you get it LEVEL then when you put the balancer head back on its spindle post it should hang LEVEL!!!! Yours might mine DID NOT!!!! I could set it back on the test plate and it read level, back to the spindle and it didn't.
Now, at this point your ready to calibrate the balancer. DO NOT ADJUST THE BUBBLE!!!!!! I started off with a 3/8" hex nut placing in on the balancer's lower ring and locating it to the proper position to correct the bubble. I found that the nut was a little light so I added a 1/4" nut to it, move them around and found LEVEL! I used a marker and marked the location for the positioned weight. I then used some ammunition reloading scales and weighed the two nuts (weights). Once I knew what the total was I then took a stick-on weight and trimmed it down to the exact amount, I then stuck it on the balancer outer body in the marked location. Checked the bubble and it was LEVEL! So, now the balancer head is weight calibrated.
Lastly, whenever I setup the balancer I always do so in the same location, which I marked on the floor with a marker, which is the most level location on the floor.
Final note! after you calibrate the balancer NEVER adjust the bubble again! so I'm very careful when I move the balancer around not to press on or fool with the bubble level as not to mess with its KNOWN LEVEL!
Now, if your going to do this to your balancer than before you do I would also check this out about the balancer.
Check to make sure that the spindle post is at a true 90 (straight up) from the base, I used my level test plate on my bench. Take the balancer head off, place the base and spindle on the plate, and use a level to check the spindle, off one side and then off the front (facing you) mine was TERRIBLE!!!!! I had to loosen the bolt and cut a 1/3 round paper washer and put it in between the metal washer on top and the base on one side and tighten it back up before the spindle was CLOSE to straight, I don't think this has to be perfect but if its off enough I felt it could cause an inconsistent tire balance.
I've thought about doing some video's for the other modification to my Home Tire Equipment, I've come with a pretty nice simple to make tire spreader.
I've come up with a better way to two step the tire weight position.
I've also, made a few pretty nice tire changer modification.
    But!
Anybody think there is enough interest in it for me to make the video's???

Before you put a tire on that balancer, make sure the bubble is in the center of the sight Glass, You can make an adjustment using the 3 little screws next to the Site glass and then you'll be able to Balance the tire accurately by placing it on and then putting weights on the rim To bring the bubble back to the center of the sight glass

They are expensive, but if you don't want scratches on your wheels, you need it.
