For girls with thick hair who don't get flawless results: our hair isn't meant for heatless styles that include water. Since our hair is thick and being compressed with twists and braids, your hair will take FOREVER to dry and when you think that it's time to un-twist your hair, chances are that it'll still be a bit damp and your hair will get poofy and frizzy once it completely dries after undoing your twists/braids. So from someone with thick hair who has tried SEVERAL heatless methods, I have found that damping your hair with gel does wonder! it keeps your curls in place and your hair won't get poofy or frizzy. I use the Suave max hold sculpting gel 8. it's cheap, non-sticky, fast drying and alcohol-free! btw it doesn't leave your hair feeling crunchy or stiff.. depending on how much you use of course. Really hope this helps someone :)

This is definitely the best review of this method I’ve seen, especially on short hair. Love that you thought about the back of your head while you were doing it, instead of just curling in the front and then complaining about the back like a few people I’ve seen. Also liked that you didn’t go in with heat but actually fluffed them and made it work without fixing it with heat straight away, I haven’t seen anyone do that but it actually looked so good once you fluffed it out like that and didn’t even need heat! And thank you for the end of day update too.

    Hello, everyone!!!
I would first like to comment that I was an Irish dancer growing up. So, this is a lot more comfortable, than sleeping in the plastic curlers that I did. And, just so you know, I was not part of the wig phase. We used to curl our hair naturally. I blame Michael Flatley for this...
When I first found out that this method existed, just about three months ago, I was so ecstatic. The beautiful thing, about my hair, is that it takes curls amazingly well. I just don't like using a curler. My hair isn't damaged and I want to keep it that way.
So, I have shoulder length hair right now and it is pretty fine, and I would suggest, using a bandana. So you don't have to buy a robe to get the rope with it. Only use the bathrobe if you have seriously long hair. And, since I have done this about six times now, at the end of the bandana, there isn't much left. So place the little bit of bandana over your hair, when you twist it, and then put it in a hair tie or scrunchie. I prefer just a hair tie. I don't like the scrunchy feeling.
As for product, I sometimes, spray some hairspray, after both buns are made. But, you absolutely have to, damp your hair, to keep it curly all day.
I also I have a subscription to Ipsy and I recently got a leave-in conditioner. What I do is spray a small amount in my hand, first, and then scrunch up my hair, and it instantly, becomes frizz-free. So that is something that worked for me.
I hope this is helpful and I am so glad, Milabu, you did this!!! You looked beautiful and it just takes a couple of times to figure it out. And, if you do want to do this in the morning, keep it in for at least 5 to 8 hours. Even two hours, my hair is completely curled.

I tried this last night. I was REALLY REALLY happy with the results. I have a side part, and it was difficult for me to wrap my hair around the robe chord on my deep side, but this was overall the best method for heatless curls overnight. For years i've used pigtail braids, french braids and dutch braids. but my hair was always wavy and messy. This hairstyle works the best on both short and long hair. I've seen a lot of reviews on this method and a lot of girls were very impressed/satisfied with their results. I would definitely recommend using this technique!

I double the belt for bigger curls/waves and wrap my damp hair around and secure overnight (not the most comfortable). In the morning I get an amazing beachy wave and I love it. 🌊

This is the only way I’ve done my hair for the past month!! It’s amazing, I’m obsessed, and I’m sticking to it! I have long naturally wavy/frizzy hair and this looks amazing on it! I wash my hair about 2x a week and while it’s still pretty wet (more than damp), I add it’s a 10 serum to my ends and Paul Mitchell thicken up styling liquid to my roots. I do the robe tie twist method a little differently. For my very back sections on both side, I twist the alternating direction at the end. And after tying the ends, I leave the two twists falling straight down. I tried the side bun thingy to keep it out of the way at night and it made my curls deformed. So I sleep with them hanging down like pigtails and find it much more comfortable than tying them up also - I’m a side sleeper as well. In the morning, I take it all out, brush through them with my fingers or brush, apply hairspray as needed, and go on about my day! These curls do settle down to more waves after 3 or so days, but I still love the look on my long hair. And that’s it. I use no heat at all and wash my hair only 2x a week now and it’s grown so much since starting!!

@CaitlynKothe it's almost 2 years since you posted this comment so I don't know if you'll see my reply or answer it but I would love to hear how you do the very back section. I can't envision what you mean --- "For my very back sections on both side, I twist the alternating diredction at the end." Do you mean if you've been twisting all the hair away from your face you start twisting it towards your face? Doesn't mean that some of the hair falls off the belt because you twist your hair foward you are basically undoing what you've been twisting? Thank you for your explanation.

Side sleeper? Try this modification that works for me.
Once I finish wrapping a side, I don’t just elastic the hair to the belt. Instead, I take a tiny section of the belt right where I’ve ended wrapping that side and fold it up over the very end of the wrapped hair, trapping the tail end of hair inside the little folded up belt section. Then I put an elastic around just that flip fold (so I don’t have to pull the entire length of the robe belt through the elastic.) Don’t do the “bun” thing with the long rope end. Instead, I just tie the two robe belt ends in a very loose knot behind my neck and sleep quite comfortably on my side. Love the results!

Tips for hair types (straight, wavy, and loose curls)
    Straight thin hair
1 common robe fabric works great, keeping the hair from slipping, and unlike other hair types, it doesn't cause much frizz
2 Wet your hair with just water until it's either wet enough it looks darker, or if you can't see it, until it's wet enough, you can wring it out and get DROPLETS of water
3 In any method, keep your hair tight. Your hair is the most likely to lose volume and texture quickly, so tight curls are easy to loosen, but not going tight enough means you'll have barely, if not any, any effect.
4 Hairspray with a decent or strong holding hairspray, this is after you brush it out to loosen it. You don't have to brush it out, but the hairspray is a must if you want it to last
    Straight, thick hair
1 Common fluffly robes works great for this method for your hair type as well since thickness won't affect you here.
    2. Water will be helpful here, but instead of soaking your hair which will lead to parts of the hair still being damp and it drying frizzy, I suggest using a lightweight hair cream with a bit of water if it is water activated and putting that in your hair. When your hair either feels soft (like when conditioning) or sticky, depending on if you use cream or gel, that is when you're ready
3 I would still recommend keeping the curls tight in all methods due to the lack of texture in your hair
    4. If you used a strong gel, you can get away with using a less strong hairspray, but still make sure to finger brush or fully brush and style before using the hairspray
    Wavy hair
    1. If your hair has soft waves, this robe fabric will work fine, especially if you have thin hair. If you have tighter waves, it will depend on a large amount of factors. Because of this, when I don't have days and trails to test someone's hair, I recommend satin ribbon or a satin robe belt. Or even a different method altogether (the sock method works great, and there's a crown method with a robe that won't frizz your hair as bad as the twists).
    2. If you've already done a hair wash day and have styling products in your hair, you can (with thick and tight wave hair) get away with having dry hair and no extra product. If you have thin or loose waves, I'd recommend adding in your favorite hold product, or if you don't use one regularly, a lightweight cream or mouse. Thin hair with water activated products can just add water, though, since the products should reactivate and you can twist without the fear of your hair not drying.
    3. If you want those bouncy loose curls, go slightly tighter than you need to for it to hold its place, but you don't need to go extremely tight as it will be harder to loosen them. If you want tight ringlet curls, go tighter and use a wide tooth comb to loosen them after. It will loosen the tighter ones a bit but won't do it enough to get that bounce, which is why you can change depending on the desired look.
    4. I would use a very light hairspray or even just use a bit of the previous product and coat the curls individually. You still need a hold. But not as strong as a heavy hairspray
    Loose Curly hair
    1. Don't use those soft robes. Use satin ribbons or robe belts, and honestly, don't use this method. If you really want to, you can, but this method works better for those in the loose hair category. The crown, sock (use the outside of the sock, and a soft fabric), or even a twist method works fine.
    2. If you have styling products in your hair already, you can go ahead and start. You can add more products, but as long as your products are keeping your natural hair in place, they should do the same for you now.
    3. Unless you're testing to see if this will help your 6 day old hair revive, I would go as loose as you can with these. If you go tight, they'll clump and bunch together and be like your natural hair on a bad hair day. So just get your hair straight and loose as you can get it and then put it up.
    4. If your products are strong enough, you should be golden by the end outside of some shaking to loosen the curls. If there's any you need to fix, it's the same as natural hair, a bit of product, and fixing up the ends. Oil or other frizz fixes if anything goes really wrong, and you should be golden
Sorry this was long. Any questions and I'll answer as best I can. I realized I was having trouble finding new ways to do my hair that I didn't need to have this knowledge and understanding of my hair already to do and that others with different hair types than the people their watching might want these tips.

this is what is called rag curls and we used a hair net over our heads when we were done. rag curls can be done individual or like you just did. the hair net was a triangle netting that was tied over the head (like a scarf), I always tied mine in the back so there were no bumps to sleep on. then we graduated to pin curls and I use to dry curl my hair at night, wrap it in the net and the curls would last from washing to washing. then we went to rollers (beer cans). those were awful to sleep on.

I haven't done this style in a while and came to your video for a refresher! my hair length is to my hips. I've tried this method multiple times but my best results were when I used the "Beach Babe Soft Waves Sea Salt Spray" to mist my hair before I start wrapping it, and then really spray it all over once both sides are wrapped and I'm headed to bed! I love doing curls this way, no heat damage and takes me a lot less time💙

My mom actually did this when i was a kid. She would get an old bedsheet and cut it in pieces. We call it " papillotten". U can use it in many ways. Like u did around the head, or just like little bits and pieces at a time.

Next you should try to do individual strips for tighter curls! That is how I do it. It takes about 24 strips of old cotton shirt or pillow case(I use pillow case because my hair is long) it also allows me to get the curls all the way to my scalp in the back. It's also much more comfortable for us side sleepers. My hair is naturally pretty wavy so it will hold the tight curls until I wash it again. I do this method on dry hair, though people with less natural wave to their hair could dampen it first.

I've tried that 3 days ago. My hair is just a bit longer than yours. I used a fake silk robe band and just tied it with a soft scrunchie at the end. Also I just let the ends hanging. I've got nice beachy waves and they are still in my hair after 3 days. I prepped my hair with oil and let it air dry to 80% 🥰

You should try the version this girl named Shonagh Scott did and compare results. I think her version is easier for shoulder length hair because she does a 3 “strand” twist and it helps keep the hair tighter. Her version also gives a better all over head wavy curl. I tried both methods and I prefer the results of her method.
This 2 “strand” method like the version Milabu did is not easy to keep tight once you get to the bottom of your hair and for me it was difficult to get the elastic around the ends. This version gives more voluminous curls on the ends of your hair, which are good for ponytail curls. I had to use my smoothing serum to get rid of some of the frizz and poofy volume. The results are good for wearing ponytail hairstyles, but the curls aren’t even all over, so you’d have to go back and fix it if you want to wear it down.
Tips for shoulder length and shorter hair : if you have a silk or non-cotton type robe, use that belt instead. It’s a lot easier to use with elastics. Also, I fold my belt in half and used an elastic to hold the side with separated strands together. That way you don’t have anything dangling and it’s easier to manage when twisting.

This is basically rag curls. I have done both and it’s the only way I can get my hair to stay curly. There are better ways to tie it off for more comfortable sleeping.
My hair is beyond straight and resembles shiny plastic black wigs. I found applying a little mousse while my hair is damp gives it longer lasting curl and a bit less frizz. I brush it after it’s set and then twist the curls into the size curl clump that I want and I’m usually good for 2-3 days or when my hair gets wet. Heat or steam curling lasts maybe an hour even with product.

@milabu Thank you for showing us "Medium" hair length girls that it not only works, but it looks great too. In your video (@ 3:34), you mention that you're "not really understanding how the back of the hair is going to get incorporated?" Your technique and curls look great, and that was what I was looking for. In regards to your question, I had watched another heatless curl video before yours. It's called "HEATLESS CURLS/SHONAGH SCOTT." @shonaghscott uses the robe belt as well, but her technique is different. She includes the back of her hair during the wrapping process around the belt. Again, thank you for your medium length hair video❣️ 👏🏻

It’s called “rag curling”my grandma taught me how to do this ..strips of cloth ,..I have super long hair curls last days although you do it different…I use many strips..you suppose to tie the cloth in a knot to the top of your hair..damp hair then wrap around cloth tightly then take the rest of the cloth and wrap it back up the the hair and tie a knot back to the top of the hair..you have to make sure the cloth is double the length of the hair to achieve this… this is a very old method of curling hair and very effective done in the Victorian age

I tried it this past weekend, and I did the bun thing too! My hair is about 2in longer than yours. However I was wearing it like that while I was doing house chores. I did take a nap and didn't like it for sleeping either so I knew I would do this overnight. The curls did last 3 days, on day 3 it was nice big waves. Funny enough today I'm trying a new method. Instead of the buns I just criss cross the tails in the back and bring the excess robe material to the top of my head and made a cute bow. I took a nap with it and it felt waaay more comfortable. Now I just have to see how the curls are when I take it off. If they are good I will be doing the overnight this way😉

My hair is halfway down my back and a mix of waves/curls/straight. I tried this but I didn’t pull just from the front. I alternated pulling from the front and back. Then I use the belt as my third strand and braided the ends. For the excess belt I crossed them at my neck and tied them on the top of my head in a bow. Worked great at giving all over waves that lasted all day!

A tip for you from someone who have mixed hair type of curly wavy and straight
If you do this and want to avoid frizz or flyes just add a scarf ( like hijab) after finishing the style (the method)
It's preferred to do it during the day
And after the hair drys and you open it
The curls will stay like this (might falls abit) but you won't get any frizz trust me on that ( the scarf also doesn't need to be tight on the head it's just to tame the hair itself)
One last thing (it's about my hair ): I have a very straight hair from roots till my ears (end of them) than till my back it's a mix of curls and waves ,the bangs or hairs especially infront of my ears to my face is pretty straight . I've been putting my hair into like buns or just twist the hair together like u did without the rob belt and than throws a scarf on it and let the hair drys than take everything out
    It works very well .
Also just for the records as I said my hair is already curly x wavy x straight but so I usually do this when I want to define some of the curls/waves in my hair
You also won't need any tools later on or anything it will last a pretty good time (till the next wash)
But for a whole straight hair just apply a hair setting spray it will keep the curls well (tried it on my sister she has a very straight hair)

I tried this and I have long hair that goes way over my shoulder blades. This method made same kind of curls that you have and also the last bit of hair was little off. I just curled them little bit of heat and they lasted half a day. End of the day this most tight curls were still pretty but loose ones were gone. I kinda like this method to have curls without using that much heat and still get beautiful result perhaps to have curly hairstyle 😊

I have curly hair, 3b-ish, and this trick works so great to give me uniform, predictable curls I can work with, no fuss. I always use freshly washed hair, 80% dried, with a bit of smoothing cream and plenty of gel to manage frizz. I make the sections smaller and tighter to mimic my natural curl and they definitely fall throughout the day like yours did. My hair is medium length, this is my GO TO heatless curl. Wish I would have learned about it earlier!
