  • One of the questions I often get asked here at Elktracks Studio is "What are the things that someone should know when they first get started in leather working?" Here are a few of the things I wish someone had told me when I first got started.
    To some people, these may seem like stuff everyone should know, but unless you are around someone that can give you these pointers, figuring them out on your own can be a long process.
    If interested in more, you can learn leatherworking through a library of in-depth workshops taught by Jim Linnell at elktracksstudi...

    Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I have been doing this for a couple of years and I love the continuous learning that goes on. I watched your video series for making a wallet from scratch and I can’t even begin to tell you how important and impactful that was for me. I would stop it and do a little and start it and just continue that process. I hope you realize how many people you help and how appreciated you are.

      Amy, We all start at the same place. What separates leatherworkers is how much practice they put in.

    Hi Sir! I am planning to start for leather crafting and I wanted to begin with wallets, can you recommend a tools that I can use?
    By the way sir age is just a number, without you I wont be able to put interest into this kind of craft. 🤓

    • @ElktracksLeather
      @ElktracksLeather 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I started with a basic starter set from Tandy Leather when I first got started. They still sell these. They contain all of the basic stamping tools you would need to get started. They even include a few projects. From there on, you just need to practice.

    Hello, can you please tell me what you use to sharpen and or polish your ceramic swivel knife? I don't really want to use jewelers rouge because it can cause cancer, is there a safer alternative? Thank you very much for your knowledge.

      The biggest secret I could pass to you is to practice with your tools as much as you can. All of leather carving gets easier with practicing with the tools.

    Did you use a template on the leather , I seen lines on the leather before you started ? If so what did you use for them?

    • @ElktracksLeather
      @ElktracksLeather 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I pre-traced that outline on the leather so that I could demonstrate cutting.

  • @jackmiddleton2080

    The thing that is confusing to me is isn't the color of leather permanently changed if you get it wet?

    • @ElktracksLeather
      @ElktracksLeather 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does slightly darken with the casing process, but will dry back to nearly the same color. Repeatedly wetting it will darken it more.

    What would you recommend for a beginner, the basic stamping tools to start out with?

    • @ElktracksLeather
      @ElktracksLeather 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Frank Hiebert - If someone is trying leather carving for the first time, one of the beginners kits from Tandy Leather is a good place to start. If someone has done a little leatherwork already, they might do better selecting specific tools to do the type of work they want. There is another series of videos on TH-cam that I did on creating a wallet from scratch. This video series will show you the specific tools that I use.

    • @ElktracksLeather
      @ElktracksLeather 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are 6 basic stamping tools that are all that are really needed. Those, a swivel knife and a mallet will get you started. If you visit some place like Tandy Leather, you will find that they sell these in a set.
