Inception: What's It Really About?

- Movies are much like dreams. This, of course, is according to the visionary Oscar-nominated filmmaker, Christopher Nolan. Nolan is responsible for such cinematic treasures as The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Prestige, Interstellar, and among his most beloved, Inception. Inception is the story of a man’s desperate attempt to implant an idea into the subconscious mind of his mark. Over the years, the film has received endless amounts of analysis and theories to speculate on what the movie’s true meaning is and what it all means by the time the credits roll. Now, as is the case with all art, the movie is subjective and the Director himself has gone on record stating that he’s not interested in validating any of the existing theories floating around the internet since the film's release.
While the parallels have since been highlighted between Nolan’s filmmaking philosophy and the philosophy of dreams, to say that Inception is nothing but a metaphor for making art- I think there’s some details hidden within the film and its production that suggest something much simpler and perhaps even more meaningful.
See, Nolan has gone down as saying “I actually don’t want people to have me in mind when they’re watching the films.” and is notably private about his personal life with his wife, Emma Thomas, and their children. Nolan is a family man. But he’s also a filmmaker with a story to tell. Cobb in Inception is a man out of reality who specializes in building dream worlds in order to extract secrets from his mark’s brains. Basically, he’s a heist artist- but his jobs take place within others’ minds.
In the film, Cobb is desperate to complete one last job in order to allow himself to retire and return home to his two young children. Cobb is haunted by the dedication he’s had to his work and how it not only pulled him away from his family- but even caused the untimely death of his own wife, Mal. His obsession with following his dreams and making his passion into a demanding job definitely seems to be similar to Nolan’s life and career as a director of film.
Now, in today’s episode we are going to break down the story and its themes to formulate our own theory on what Inception is REALLY about- but in order for us to truly know- we watched Inception back-to-back with another Nolan favorite, The Prestige. The Prestige is a film about two rival magicians who drive themselves to any length in order to discover each other's secrets. The film helped us see Inception with fresh eyes and come up with our theory on what Inception is REALLY about. Find out what we have in store in today’s episode!

I remember seeing this in theaters when it first came out. It was summer and I was 15. Good times
I know it's up to interpretation, but I think that Cobb was awake at the end of the film. In every other scene where he saw his kids, he didn't see their faces, but in the final scene he actually sees their faces, & they are wearing slightly different clothes compared to previous scenes. Additionally, someone once pointed out how Cobb actually has 2 ways to see if he's awake or not-his top & his wedding ring-& they explained that if you watch him he'll check his wedding ring to know when he's awake.
The top was his wife's totem.
I think the film is about dealing with grief and learning to move on. Cobbs misses his deceased wife so much that he would rather be trapped in the world of dreams with her and "grow old together", instead of facing the harsh reality that she is gone. It wasn't until he was able to find closure with her death that he was able to free himself from his dream, wake up and get to finally see his kids.
For me the rules of “Inception” were perfectly told visually and narratively, whereas the rules of “Tenet” were not explained well visually or narratively.

Love inception to me. It's one of the best movies of the past century unique concept That was executed perfectly on screen perfectly cemented Christopher Nolan in my opinion as one of the top, if not the top filmmaker of his generation. Love the cast. Love the feeling style of the movie everybody benefited from being in that film. Everyone careers elevated after that movie
I own the shooting script and the foreword from Chris Nolan said it was heavily influenced by The Matrix, they just removed the virtual reality substituting an actual dreamscape, and replaced the agents with an emotional antagonist, ie Mal. Amazing flick, but not particularily original...and it does it no disservice at all.
I agree with Michael Caine's interpretation that every scene with his character really happens. So when he's present when Cobb reunites with his children, then it's reality.
I believe the Mal was right theory, that when she killed herself she really was leaving the Dreamworld... Cobb was trapped in a dream he created and forgot about and Mal Incepted the idea of redemption in his mind so that he could be at peace in the dream he was trapped in
I do think Inception worked, and Cobb got his kids back
I remember thinking (after walking out of the theatre) was Cobb dreaming the whole time and that nothing was real? That his wife die tragically and he couldn't handle it to the point he wasn't able to take care of his children causing his guilt to over take him.
Inception is the sequel to Shutter Island. It’s all in Teddy’s head.
Could Inception be a prequel to Batman Begins, leading Scare Crow taking an interest in the human mind and deciding to make the world in his own image. This would make Bruce Wayne and Dr Jonathan Crane both targets for influence by the league of shadows due to rich family background, Dr Crane the one who bought in to the league of shadows philosophy and Bruce Wayne the one who resist it.
It's the sequel to the Looper
The music from Hans was some of the best i have ever heard.
Next to "Batman Begins", "Inception" is Nolan's best work.

I think everyone has missed the most important thing about Cobb’s totem. A totem is supposed to function in a very specific way (known only to person whose totem it is: like a loaded die) but a spinning top is not a very good totem, as it is supposed to fall when it stops spinning (there is no secrecy involved); so anyone can recreate this falling and fool the dreamer.
Cobb is so deep in his dreams that he has no way to know / or cares about reality and the movie is about just accepting: it is what it is

Well said. Giving any movie a theme is an inception, in a way. But as they point out, you have to make the target think they cane up with it. You cant come right out and say the message of the movie, you have to let the audience think it up.
I remember struggling to convince people that Nolan left it intentionally ambiguous because that's the funnest way to end it. Keep it spinning and you get the 'it was all a dream' cliché, let it fall and you get a mundane happy ending, but cutting away is the Kick to wake the audience up and immediately ask "wait, so what did it all MEAN?!"
And then immediately give it meaning
(which is basically what Robert Fischer is doing in his final scene)
It's about dreams. And that's what is so powerful about it.

I am enjoying this video and its perspective. Here's one for you. I work for the company that made it, and when it came out, I worked on the original BD of it. The one with the branching. So my perspective on this film and the others WB made with him (and hopefully more) is definitely unique of your audience.

Nolan confirmed the ending that his real totum is his ring. He doesn’t want people to know what his real one is. That’s how you know the ending is real.
Every time you watch inception you find out something new visually / theoretically

What a great movie.
Honestly all of Nolan films work as one continual story Starting with Dunkirk (WWII) and ending with Tenet (WWIII).
14:39 - This one's been beaten to death. You don't see the top fall because Cobb doesn't care at that point. He loves his kids. Your own theory about Nolan missing his kids ties into that. And, to link to your other theory, it forces the audience to look at the bigger picture. So, noone should care if the top falls, yet that was the core of many (many!) conversations as if the choice was binary. No. It was trinary - It falls/reality, it doesn't fall/dreamland, and noone should watch the top/who cares as it's the world he wants.
First time hearing the connection theory between these 3 movies, definitely a cool idea, but i don't see it. Definitely some deep thought tho.
There has been 500+ interpretations since 2009 about this movie. Only Nolan himself knows and only gives vague answers. No TH-camr is ever going to 'decipher' something like that.

Evidenced by the fact that he spins his totem but walks away before he gets his answer I don't think we're supposed to know. Why should we care if he doesn't? If we were meant to there'd be a scene where he spends a perfect day outside with his wife and kids and then walks back into the kitchen to see his totem still spinning and the camera would lock onto his horrified look right as the movie ends (or find it motionless although that sounds less interesting). The ambiguity is the point of the ending and to try and define which world he's in is missing the point. At the end of the day Cobb just wants HIS dream whether it's real or not. He wants to be happy and by not decisively knowing if it's a lie or not he allows himself the gray area to happily ignorant of the real truth and have the life he's always wanted. Sometimes ignorance truly is bliss.
That's what I took away from the film when I saw it for the first time as a teenager, and still do now.
That Cobb doesn't care if the totem stops spinning or not. Ignorance is bliss ❤ especially for Cobb

Yoy can explore the existential angle you want but as an actual lucid dreamer i found the movie dumb.
Certainly in the minority it seems, but I didn't get much from this film, I can see where he was going, and the effects are unique, but it just wasn't entertaining.
I watched it as a young ten and it was BORING.
