    Inception Ending Explained
Right let's start at the top.
So Inception has an ambiguous ending that at the time left every viewer debating whether our main character Cob had returned to the real world or if he was actually still stuck in a dream.
It's something that fans went back and forth over for the past decade but Nolan actually did drop a specific clue into the movie that confirmed Cob made it home to his family. Throughout the film whenever the character is in a dream he can be seen wearing his wedding ring. This is because his wife Mallorie is very much alive whenever he's in his sedated state and thus he doesn't want to quite cast away the memory of her.
This is probably a theory that you've seen dotted about on the internet before as it's been about for a while now, however one thing I haven't seen that much centres around Cobs Totem.
Throughout the entire movie we are told that the spinning top is actually his Totem and that this is what he uses to assess whether he's in the real world or not. I actually don't believe that this is Cobs Totem at all and I think that the simply tells everyone that it is because he's so paranoid. Cob clearly struggle with grasping reality in the first place and I feel like he's the kind of character that would keep his true totem to himself. We are told in the film that no one should touch anyone else Totem and that doing so can cause issues. The spinning top itself also belonged to Mal so it is unlikely that Cob would take it.
The fact we know that the ring indicates what real and what isn't to me tells us that the ring is actually what Cobbs Totem is. If he's wearing it he knows he's in a dream and if he's not he knows he's in reality which is far more trust worthy than the Totem. Cobb spins the top at the end of the movie but upon seeing his family's faces goes to them instead allow it to spin without him seeing the outcome.
Doing this pretty much invalidates the spin showing that he simply doesn't care about the outcome because he already knows the truth.
The cool little easter eggs don't stop there either and if you take the first letter of all the characters names in the movie and rearrange them they actually spell out the words Dreams Pay.
This is because of Dom, Robert, Eames, Arthur, Mal, Saito, Peter, Ariadne and Yusuf.
Their names also have specific meanings behind them, Cobb was actually the name of a theif in Nolan's first film The Following. It also means Dream in Sanskrit. On top of this it could be seen as meaning Cobweb which is of course a trap laid out by spider.
Ariadne is actually from ancient myth and the name comes from the Minotaur and the Labryinth. This is fitting as she builds mazes.

So um your whole video theory is wrong because of 2 facts. 1 in the movie he says no matter how hard I try I can not see my kids faces and proves it the kids never turn around and he always sees the back of their heads because he doesn't remember what they look like. 2 at the end he spins his wife's totem which is now his and he hears hey look who's here. At which point the kids turn there heads and we see their faces. This means he didn't need to see the totem tip because the fact he can see the kids faces means he isn't dreaming.

A couple weeks after my sister committed suicide by jumping off a bridge, this movie was the first I watched in the theaters. The scene when Mal jumps was very hard to watch and still is today. Even with all that, I enjoyed the movie very much and taught me many life lessons. I try to let go of regrets, enjoy life in the moment, and I try not to be the one to fix everything going wrong because sometimes that can make it worse.
I’m motivated to try and watch the movie for the second time as it deserves at least that much. Thank you for the video! It was superb as always!

The totem idea is illogical as anyone could copy a totem while you’re asleep. The top falling wouldn’t prove he is awake. He could just be in a new dream controlled by Saito or someone else. The Matrix has the same problem with the red pill / blue pill. How does Neo know he’s not in another matrix run by Morpheus? Taking pills from strangers isn’t wise. Going to sleep in a room with strangers is not wise either.

At the end, I think he is still in a dream. You never really get to see his left ring finger clearly to see if he is wearing the wedding ring. The child saying "We're building a house on a cliff" is referencing Saito's house on the cliff in Limbo, so that dream is piercing through this level. The spinning top is a red herring, doesn't mean anything. The truth is what the kid is saying. The important thing is that he leaves the spinning top to be with his kids because he doesn't care if he is in a dream or reality as long as he is with his kids.

There are two other clues in the movie supporting the idea that Cobb returned to the real world. #1 is that he told Ariadne that prior to his leaving, he did not see the faces of his children, and in the end her did. #2 is more powerful I think: it is that you can actually hear the top slowing down in the end indicating that he's in fact in the real world.

@@davethesid8960 it's a little unclear. i've seen it a few times, and from what i can remember in my last viewing, we only actually see the totem spin forever when he's in *limbo* We never see it do that any levels before.
They also never say the totems tell you if you're dreaming. They specifically say the only thing the totems are capable of telling you or not is if you're in someone ELSE'S dream.
You could be in your dream and the top would spin forever, you could be in limbo and the top would spin forever, but if you're in someone else's dream, that's perfectly constructed to mimic reality and based off *their* perception of it, then it would topple. This is why they have totems. It's specifically about the unique weight and balance of the objects that only they know. Not what they can make them do. That could vary depending on what degree of control they have, but the weight and balance will *always* be the same. And always tell them for sure.

@@krazykaye8843 it toppling wouldn't indicate that the weight was off. that's just what tops do. but it toppling faster or slower might? any irregularity could.
but that would be a pretty flimsy thing to judge and if it was weighted differently enough to affect the rate it stopped spinning then presumably, the weight should have tipped him off the moment he took it out of his pocket because he could have felt whether it was significantly lighter or heavier already from what he was used to.

The end indicates he doesn’t care if it’s a dream anymore; when confronted with his kids he picks engaging with them over finding out if it’s real.

As had been said before, the immortal thing about the spinning top at the end isn't whether it spins forever. It's that Cobb doesn't care what it does.

his totem was his kid... he could never see his face... and at the end when he saw his face he knew he was in reality again... thats why he didnt care about the spinning thing anymore, plus he never saw the ending of the spin when he put it in the vault so he cant tell if it stopped or not... and obviously it stopped (if physics exist lel)

The ending isn't the first time that he doesn't watch the top after he spins it...believe it is the 3rd time... Also the line "you never remember the beginning of a dream" ... At the very end there is a hard cut when he lands and he just in the house in the next scene...

Physics are not what control the spin, subconscious is. If someone is controlling the dream, he can control the spin. And in reality well physics kick in. Also Michael Caine's character is only present in reality so in the end Cobb is not dreaming because also in the dreams he could never see their faces but this time he could.

Thoughts on the spinning top and totems:
As someone else mentioned, people are getting this wrong. The Totem is a device that allows you to distinguish between a dream construction someone else has created, and a dream construction that you have created (or reality for that matter). The key thing is that you know the totems look/feel and behaviour completely and you keep it to yourself. So in someone else's dream construction, they won't be able to get the attributes of your totem perfectly right because they don't know it like you do.
By those rules, it doesn't matter whether the spinning top was originally Cobb's totem or not. Once Mal killed herself and Cobb took her totem as a keepsake, there would be nothing stopping him from using it as a totem himself so long as he took the time to thoroughly familiarize himself with it and kept it to himself.
I don't think the top constantly spinning forever is ever mentioned in the movie as a way to determine reality from dream, and it wouldn't be consistent with the movie's internal logic as I understand it (though I could be wrong). In the final scene, the top should slow and stop spinning whether it's a dream or reality. It would only be subtle elements regarding the top itself (weight, feel etc) and its behaviour that would allow the totem owner to discover the nature of the reality they're in.

Cobb's ring isn't his proper Totem; he wears it when he went deeper with Mal (shown when they're waiting for a train), only made it his totem after her "death", and took her totem, the top, as a false totem. Essentially, if Mal was right, they're still dreaming and Inception doesn't work, Cobb is stuck in a level of a dream where he wants to be believe Inception is real which lead to his wive's death.
If you rewatch the flashback where she jumps; from the jankiness of the leap, to the cut to his reaction, to the question of how she even got onto the adjacent ledge, (and the attention to detail Christopher Nolan takes with his films) it leads you to believe that this isn't a true reality.

Nolan’s brilliance is making a movies that’s has perfect elements of all individual aspects of cinema. Any movie of his is written well, an epic thriller, brilliant cinematography, and excellent sound mixing. Which any film fan can hope for. And the movie will eventually become a blockbuster. Not a single film, I repeat a single film has all these elements at an 85% or above except for Nolan. Take a look at any movie.. even if it’s oscar worthy.. it’s either missing the third act thrill, is slow paced or is visually poor or bad sound mixing. This is why Nolan’s got that edge. Warner Bros and DC are really lucky to have him. And Inception holds the top spot along with 12 Angry men in my top 10 ultimate movie list. I watched it at least 50 times, I’ve done research on it and wrote an essay on it.

I don’t think it matters if his totem is the top or his wedding ring. At the end of the movie he doesn’t have the ring on and decides he doesn’t care if it’s a dream or not by leaving the top spinning.
It could still be a dream, but with his wife removed from his subconscious, meaning the top is actually his totem and the ring was just a reflection of her presence in his subconscious.

    • @elipenza-clyve7128
      @elipenza-clyve7128 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I believe this is incorrect. His main objective is to be able to return to America so he can be with his kids. He understandably misses them very much and has intense feelings of sadness, guilt, etc. whenever he thinks of them. He has the ability to see his kids faces in a dream but he chooses not to. Whenever he starts to think about his children while he is in a dream he forces himself to "look away"/stop thinking about them because he knows that if he sees their faces he won't be able to resist the urge to want them to be real and to want to be with them even though he knows its a dream. That is why the end is so trippy. He spins the top and then looks up , sees his kids faces, and immediately rushes to them without first establishing reality, then the top wobbles without us knowing whether it keeps spinning or stops.

Interesting video. Not sure that the wedding ring signifies the totem though.... It would signify his attachment to Mal, as you described, and is especially strong of course in the dream world. However with him letting go of Mal in order to move on, it would follow that even if he were still in the dream world at the very end, as he's moved on, the wedding ring may not appear anymore. He's let her go. It's a great easter egg, and says much about that attachment, and I think this interpretation is actually more interesting. It still leaves the ending ambiguous also. And makes a bit more sense, as if the totem was a misdirect, he likely wouldn't bother spinning it at all or watch it for a short time before leaving it... if he knows for sure he's not in the dream world anyway cos he has another totem.

    • @GamingStar1995

Cobb has 4 totems. 1 totem for each layer
Cobol Engineering was 1. They are after him in the real world because he failed them during his mission against Saito.
His kids are his totem. Specifically seeing their faces. That's his true totem.
The ring helps him keep his memories of Mal alive. When it's off, He's in the real world. (He doesn't wear a ring of his dead wife)
Mal's Totem was his Guilt. She's dead, so he claimed it. He spins it because it's one of many ways to check.
